Those persistent rumours of James McAvoy playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit just won't go away and you do have to wonder if they ever will until either McAvoy fills his summer 2010 schedule (he's only got one movie lined up right now, the comedy/drama I'm With Cancer) or Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro actually reveal who they want as their Middle-Earth leading man.

In a fresh interview with Collider, McAvoy responds to the "bullshit" claims that he's agreed to star as Bilbo Baggins for the tiring 14 month shoot which begins in June and whilst he is at it, also denies that he has been cast in an Ian Fleming biopic.

Though he does claim the script for James Bond creator's life story did fall into his lap a long time ago but he never even got round to meeting the producers about the project.

Word comes from Pajiba tonight that James McAvoy is "attached" to play Ian Fleming in a $40 million biopic of the James Bond creator which is being produced by Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films.

The announcement is interesting to us, of course, but probably not to the level it is interesting to Leonardo DiCaprio whose production company (with the backing of Warner Bros.) made plans 19 months ago to make a Fleming biopic which DiCaprio himself would star in. The project has since gone through at least one re-write, and in truth when someone like DiCaprio is attached, these things can be in development hell for years.

Now with McAvoy's movie looking like it's going ahead, the hand is forced to DiCaprio who will now have to decide whether he really does have the desire to do Fleming because being late out of the gate in the Hollywood biopic game is sudden death. The Capote/Infamous battle was proof enough of that.

McAvoy's movie will be based on the book Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond by Andrew Lycett, and as adapted for the screen by unknown writer Matt Brown.

The biopic carries the uninspiring working title of Ian Fleming, and is currently ...

"We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible."
The words of Steven Spielberg to Variety, as yesterday Robert Redford cast both James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn for his own Lincoln movie, the assassination aftermath drama The Conspirator.

Spielberg is right of course. His Lincoln movie is to focus on the president's anguish over the Civil War whilst Redford's is more about the trial of the assassination conspirators. If anything the two films would compliment each other quite nicely.

Yesterday's Variety said...
Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent.
That movie begins filming next month but Spielberg's is still no where to be seen, as he is more interested in playing with invisible rabbits than Lincoln. Though he still says "will be" to the trade but is anyone even remotely convinced he will ...

Steven Spielberg's comfort blanket remake of Harvey is a sign of the end. It's the movie where a once innovative and ambitious film-maker, the best guy holding a camera during a 18 year golden era which ended with Schlinder's List, has ran out of steam and ambition to take a risk and is entering those latter day directing years that most creative talents in this industry eventually hit. The years when they simply stop caring.

The years when even the bad movies they make (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) are just shockingly lazy efforts, not bad because they were major failures by a an auteur who just got the puzzled mixed up (A.I.), just bad, bad, bad movies.

Bad, because there was no effort. I think the term is "hack job".

Spielberg stopped caring the moment he chose to remake James Stewart, instead of stepping up to the plate and making Lincoln, a project at this point he is frightened of.

Will today's news even be on Spielberg's radar? Is he so distanced now from the figure of Lincoln - that he won't care?

It's been reported that Mr. Sundance Robert Redford intends to direct The Conspirator, a low budget Indie film focusing on Mary ...

"The whisper we keep hearing in recent days is that the name of the lead star in Guillermo del Toro's "The Hobbit" will be announced next week at Comic-Con International" says Hero Complex, a kind of geek blog that lies within the L.A. Times.

With Peter Jackson in attendance at the Con for the first time next week, it has become the logical fanboy premonition that we are going to find out something major about The Hobbit, especially with del Toro and Jackson repeating over and over again over the last few months that they know the man they want for the part.

The names put forward by the blog do raise some eyebrows though. Dr. Who's David Tennant, Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe, the always spoken about James McAvoy and er, Jack Black.

Apparently Tennant, who is a name I have never previously thought of for the part will be in attendance at the Con next week for the first time also (promoting the upcoming Dr. Who feature) which is why his link is getting a little bit of momentum. Though isn't he too tall, too skinny to be a hobbit? An Elf is surely going to be his calling in a Tolkien feature, wouldn't you say?

Guillermo del Toro has told MTV this week that the search for Bilbo is now down to one actor and he expects to reveal the name in the upcoming weeks. I wonder if it's the same name he and Peter Jackson were said to have mutually agreed on over a year ago.

My choice then and still now is relatively obscure British actor Martin Freeman whose career never quite took off the way you thought it might after The Office and then The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Post both productions which were high profile, he was straight back down to obscurity.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of support drumed up for Michael Sheen and I'm warming to that choice, very much actually. He's a better actor than Freeman and I'm pretty much sold on the fact he can play anyone, he certainly has the eyes and intensity of Ian Holm. Just doesn't quite look as much like him as Freeman does, but then that should never be the deal breaker.

And it seems people still believe James McAvoy can do something with the character and I'm getting anxious that he hasn't won out a big role in a while. Brendon Connelly ...

If we were living in Russia, the upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar's comic book Wanted starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman would be as hotly anticipated by geeks just as much as some of the other big films of the summer.

Sadly we don't and it isn't. We are stuck with some uber lame trailers, whilst all the good stuff from the movie goes into foreign trailers that the MPAA would never pass.

How bad-ass does this movie look from this trailer? Yeah it still feels gimmicky to the 10th degree but it oddly kinda works. Maybe it's because of the dialogue being missing (well not missing but in a different language) and there's no doubt this Timbor Bekmambetov is one hell of a visual genius.

BETTER IN HD
Finally McAvoy feels like he is leading the movie and not just observing it like a sidekick to a poor Angelina Jolie film. Less of the curvy bullets = more enjoyment from me.
I'm oddly finding myself looking forward to the movie now and all it took was a change of trailer.
Wanted opens June 27th worldwide. Still too many nods to The Matrix but let's hope it can stand on it's own.

Has their been actor so over-used, especially vocally in the last fifteen years?

Wanted looks to me like a movie full of special effects gimmicks that won't carry or do justice to the heart and sole of Mark Millar's story.

And don't get me wrong for one second, I love some of the things that are going on in the movie's many trailers so far but remember, not every film is as cleverly made as the first Matrix movie and can sustain new cinematic devices and some superb storytelling for the whole running time of a feature.

Today, Empire are running an exclusvie behind-the-scenes featurette which is mostly the comic book creator Mark Millar gushing over his first piece of work adapted for film.

YOU CAN FIND THAT HERE.

The film opens worldwide at the end of next month starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Terrence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann and Common for Russian director Timbur Bekmambetov (Night Watch)

The time is rapidly approaching when you have to decide whether you are wanting to see the movie or not. At the moment, I'm 30/70 in favour of NOT seeing it with only strong word of mouth possibly being it's saviour.

Although I would have highly advised Universal to wait on a sequel to see how well the first movie performs, the word has come today that the haphazard studio have hired Derek Haas and Michael Brandt once again to scribe a follow-up to Wanted, what we presume is now being setup as a franchise.

The big cast adaptation of the Mark Millar graphic novel will open on June 27th worldwide and despite muted anticipation - at best - across the web, Universal can't see it under-performing...
“We’re just finishing up a book adaptation for Universal of the James Siegel novel Deceit. We’ve been hired to write the sequel to Wanted by the same studio,” Derek Haas revealed to Pajiba. “And we’ve got a few more things in the hopper that it’s a little premature to talk about.”
James McAvoy leads (despite Angelina Jolie's bigger presence in the posters) as a guy who finds out his long lost father is an assassin and is soon recruited by his father's organisation to follow in his footsteps.

Morgan Freeman, Common and Terrence Stamp co-star for Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch).

The film is reportedly budgeted at $65 million.

Filming one week from today in Germany will be The Last Station, a drama that will explore the turbulent final year in the life of the Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolostoy and his troubled marriage to his wife Sofia.

Christopher Plummer (as Tolostoy) and Helen Mirren (as his wife) will topline the film replacing the previously cast Anthony Hopkins and Meryl Streep. I think that's a swap we can all live with, don't you?

Also in the film are James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti.

Michael Hoffman is behind the camera. He once directed an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Giamatti plays Tolstoy's trusted follower Chertkov, a supporter of the writer's nonviolent socialist Christian movement who becomes Sofia's cunning adversary, while McAvoy plays a naive private secretary sent by Chertkov to work for Tolstoy. British actress Anne-Marie Duff, who is married to McAvoy, stars as Tolstoy's daughter Sasha.
The $20 million Warner Bros. film is based on a 1990 book by Jay Parini.

Plummer as Tolostoy sounds a little more fitting to me. There's no doubt this going to be a terrifically acted movie and with the presence of a director who adapted Shakespeare pretty well (not an easy task), this could be a ...

Everytime I see James McAvoy or Angelina Jolie trying to curve the bullet in the trailer for the comic book adaptation of Wanted all I seem to be reminded off is imagining them playing table tennis on the Nintendo Wii.

I don't think I'm going to like this movie. Reminds me an awful lot of the cartoon action movie that was Shoot Em' Up but with better looking people, and the boring actor that Morgan Freeman has truly turned into.

Feels a decade too late after The Matrix and it might just be one notch above Jumper in the glossy CGI stakes...

Wanted Exclusive Trailer

Add to My Profile | More VideosI don't think McAvoy is right for this material at all and I'm struggling to take him seriously as an action star. Maybe this should have been the action movie that Brad Pitt starred in with Jolie instead of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

This screams WAIT FOR DVD but for those interested the movie opens on June 27th from acclaimed Russian director Timur Bekmambetov.
