IRON MAN himself, Robert Downey Jr spoke to MTV this week and told the site how much pressure is on the talent behind the superhero team-up ensemble THE AVENGERS and how much he hopes the realism that Jon Favreau brought to IRON MAN will carry over for that movie.

“If we don’t get it right, it’s really going to suck. It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest, because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters,” Downey tells MTV, later adding: “The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is that Jon was very certain that “Iron Man” should be set in a very realistic way. Nothing that happened in Iron Man is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants, it warrants much further discussion.”
Which is why Jon Favreau is the best choice to direct this movie. He is currently only attached as executive producer but for me, he seems to be the guy that gets the Marvel universe more than anyone else and you just can't compare THE INCREDIBLE HULK ...

So it turns out that Jeff Bridges is quite the photographer. Apparently since the 1980's, he has been taking behind-the-scenes photographs from the sets of the films he has worked on, the most recent addition to his collection might end up being the most treasured by film fans.

It's a behind-the-scenes and very artful look at the making of this year's comic book adaptation of IRON MAN which has just been updated on his official website.

Hopefully he will bring all the behind-the-scenes photo's from his films as part of a book collection.

He snapped shots from the pre-production meetings...

To the making of the design aspects of the film...

To him losing his hair for the role of the villain Obadiah Stane...

To the actual filming itself...

It's a nice little collection and kinda makes you wish that Bridges was a roving journalist/photographer visiting all the major films sets year in and year out to get these snippets of priceless windows into the workings of the summer blockbuster.

You can see the full image gallery HERE.

Finally we are starting to scratch against the surface of mystery that surrounded the sacking of Terrence Howard from IRON MAN 2 which the trades quite conspicuously at the time said was for pay demands.

Entertainment Weekly report that there were two factors in Marvel's decision to let him go. The first was Terrence Howard's "difficult" behavior on the set of the film. They claim that Jon Favreau got so frustrated with Howard's attitude and performance that he spent way more hours than he should have chopping and basically minimalizing his role as Col. Jim Rhodes from a big character, to a supporting player.

Another problem was that in the early days of casting, Howard was brought on to the film when no other stars had signed a contract. Marvel, not expecting to get the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges for the movie, probably offered Howard too big a contract to sign on to secure the first big name for the film.

By the time it was evident that the top Hollywood names were interested in joining this comic book property it was too late for them to renogiate. Leaving Howard, with some of his performance on the ...

Wow, yesterday morning was a little like Christmas for me. I get sent an awful lot of stuff through the post on a weekly basis to promote but rarely whatever I open ever gives me the gleeful feeling of excitement that I barely take off the wrapper before placing the disc STRAIGHT into my player.

I opened up the envelope and had this guy staring back at me, 30 seconds later I was in my chair pressing play on this baby...

What an amazing cover, no studio has handled a comic book movie as well as this one in the history of cinema. Marvel, in remarkably their first solo outing created a giant of a picture here with IRON MAN, that was marketed with perfection, it was cast right with exactly the best director behind the job. Every facet of detail was perfect and this new Blu-Ray transfer of one of the year's best films is the high quality you would expect such a great movie to receive.

This is without doubt, the best film I have seen in Blu-Ray. The colours are sharp, the reds, the blues all feel clean and crisp but never over-the-top. I once heard someone say that HD ...

The IRON MAN DVD won't quite showcase the whole original film of what you saw in theatres but don't panic, they haven't cut out 10 minutes or anything, or changed lines of dialogue.

It's actually quite small but still an interesting topic to discuss. It's in regards to this shot below which is from the theatrical release, the only place you will be able to see it as it is...

Those of you who were keeping up with the production of IRON MAN may notice the above frame is actually director Jon Favreau's big apology to movie site IESB on the behalf of Paramount for shutting down their website for 24 hours (I can't remember the exact time frame) because of that photo of the character from the film set which was taken by Ronnie Adams and published 100% legally by the site

If you cast your memory back to May 8th 2007, the image was our first look at the red and gold character faithfully realised on screen and also showed some shots of the final sequence from the film still then 12 months shy from release. Basically it got us all excited but Paramount pissed because they didn't want this kind ...

Jon Favreau has told The L.A. Times that he has begun working on Iron Man 2, a sequel to the $570 million worldwide smash original which has propelled the slightly lesser known Marvel character to the heavy heights of better known hero's Spider-Man, Superman, Batman and the X-Men.

Tropic Thunder scribe Justin Theroux is writing the script right now with Favreau no doubt working very closely with the screenwriter he hand chose for the project himself. Robert Downey Jr, Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow will all return for the sequel which by all accounts should begin filming no later than the Spring.

Favreau told the press...
"We're working on it now," he said, "which hasn't been officially announced. It will be released in 2010."
That date is expected to be April 30th 2010, where it will once again kick off the Summer season early.

Not long to wait then until we can see the next step in the evolution of The Avengers on our screen. In the mean time, make sure you get your pre-orders in for the Blu-Ray and Standard DVD release of the film due out in just a few short weeks.

Hopefully not overshadowed by The Dark Knight, Marvel's Iron Man the second best comic book movie of 2008 and one of the better origin tales as far as I'm concerned will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on September 30th in the U.S.

The U.K. release has yet to be announced but expect it to be sometime around that date.

The film will be available in a one disc or Ultimate Edition 2 disc packaging, full press release and cover art below.

In a summer that had it's fair share of disappointments, this is one that stood tall early on and has kickstarted a new franchise for us to get excited about for years to come.

The IRON MAN Ultimate Edition two-disc sets are super-charged with hours of explosive bonus features that take viewers inside the suit of self-made Super Hero Tony Stark and his invincible alter ego. The sets offer the ultimate IRON MAN experience with extensive explorations of the origins of the character in a six-part featurette, as well as a seven-part in-depth look at the making of the film, a revealing documentary on the stellar visual effects, Robert Downey Jr.’s original screen test, deleted and extended scenes, a photo gallery of concept art ...

Jesus, when you see the disaster job Peter Berg and Louis Letterier have done with The Incredible Hulk and Hancock this Summer... two movies which won't perform anywhere near as well at the box office if sequels are (and it's certainly not guaranteed) greenlit then it's unsurprising that Marvel have quickly agreed to pay Jon Favreau's slightly increased wage demands over Iron Man 2.

And after a origin film which has grossed over $550 million worldwide and a series which will live for a long time and make several more millions for them, you can hardly say he hasn't deserved it.

The news comes from Nikki Finke...
It's not officially announced yet, but I'm told that Marvel Studios and Iron Man director Jon Favreau have reached a deal for him to helm the sequel, due out in 2010.
Jon Favreau did a quite wonderful job with Iron Man and unlike Letterier and Berg - here is a guy who loves this genre, completely gets the Tony Stark character (you know, ten years ago Favreau could have played Stark) and had shown clear interest in sequels and spin-off's including a mega blockbuster Avengers movie.

Losing Favreau now would have been the kind of jolt of losing ...

Iron Man has really been the perfect production for Marvel. A hassle free shoot, a great cast which came together for director Jon Favreau, critical acclaim, fanboy acclaim and now some real box office gold to boot.

The film which played at over 4,000 screens took home just over $100 million during it's opening weekend, which totals to $104 million if you count the Thursday openings. It's the 10th highest grossing opening of all time, a massive achievement for a non-sequel and is 60% higher than the usual Marvel film taking.

It's worldwide total after 5 days is said to be an incredible $201 million, which is reported to be just under the amount it cost to film, market and distribute. And thanks to Robert Downey Jr, Jon Favreau and the rest of team on the film.. it's pushed Iron Man a slightly lesser well known superhero into the cinematic echelons of the A-listers Spider-Man, Superman, Batman and X-Men.

Fantasy Moguls reports that after two days of release, Iron Man has pulled in a great total of $40 million domestic, which is broken down by $5.2 million on it's opening night of release (Thursday) and a further whopping $35 million on Friday alone.

At this rate the film has an extremely good chance of nearing that elusive $100 million figure for the weekend. Even if it falls short of that, there ain't no way in hell of a sequel not being rushed into production when the reviews have been so spectacular and the film so popular with everyone who see's it.

The film will likely end up being the biggest non-sequel opening of all time after the original Spider-Man. Impressive stuff - this is a Marvel project that should be the blueprint of how future movies are put together behind-the-scenes with the directing and acting talent.

Internationally which included some screenings which took place before the U.S - the film has taken in $57.4 million and that's before Fridays numbers are counted according to The Hollywood Reporter.

If Iron Man performs as well as the film is expected to over the next six weeks or so then Paramount will waste no time in pushing through a sequel, similar to how quickly they have already made plans for a Transformers 2 this June.

According to Paramount CEO Brad Grey at the Hollywood premiere of Iron Man - he said that we can expect the sequel in the same week in 2010, which would probably mean Friday April 30th as the third Narnia movie currently holds the May 7th slot.

There's little doubt in my mind that all actors signed up to the three movie contract deal and they will all be back for a sequel with Terrence Howard's character especially expecting some more screentime and probable character progression.

The film is in the same situation the first Spider-Man movie was in back in 2002 and Spider-Man 2 had a quick two year turn around, so I would expect the same here. It's an easy sequel for Marvel - as would be future installments of The Incredible Hulk but I don't think anyone expects that movie to perform as well as this.

Oh and make sure you stay after the credits for Iron ...

Comic books usually have two problems inherent in their adaptations into films: they lack a certain believability, and they require origin stories that usually bore the hell out of everyone. As action film fans, we flock like lemmings to the theater, only to witness such snooze-inducing and incredulous nonsense like The Fantastic Four, Hulk, or Catwoman. Even certain fairly successful ones like the first X-Men movie had a difficult time setting up the franchise without coming off silly.

The ones that work - Superman, and although I'm not much of a fan, Spiderman - manage a fair amount of action and human drama that creates a solid and engaging ...

There's a moment in Iron Man when Tony Stark takes flight to the sky's in full control of his faithfully adapted red and gold suit, looking way more convincing in the air than the ridiculous amount of money spent by rival studio Warner Brothers on their Superman character two years ago that I began to think - isn't it great to see how far comic book movies have come in the last ten years.

Memories have soon began to fade of 20th Century Fox and their rather tepid first attempt at the X-Men franchise, not quite sure how it was going to perform despite some big name casts. They were adamant and Bryan Singer certainly complied - in grounding the film down in reality as much as humanely possible which of course meant a travesty when the suits turned up on screen and they all looked the same. Lame black all around and the characters lost much of the personality that their own individual attire had given them for years in the printed and animated form.

Fast forward to 2008, comic books have never been this popular for such a long time - adults are coming back to the medium and it's ...

I'm just a few short hours away now from seeing Iron Man tonight - really can't wait. The reviews have been universally positive, it looks like Marvel have created and financed a movie on their own which stands up with the extremely high quality that was set with the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises.

It's claimed to be the best superhero film since Batman Begins and the one movie that is giving people massive hope of the future of Marvel's portion of the genre.

But enough of Iron Man, my review will come late tonight.

For now this is what is of interest. The longest trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which will play alongside prints of the latest Marvel blockbuster

I've long been thinking that Iron Man is an interesting comic book adaptation. Not quite up there with the fan bases of the illustrated megastars like those eclectic X-Men, kooky Fantastic Four or magnificent lone crusaders known as Superman, Spiderman and Batman but nonetheless an interestingly layered chap with conflicting personality traits and a few cool gadgets plus a wadge of cash to play with. In terms of the real names tied to the project we have Jon Favreau directing his first action film along with a host of big name celebs who are also, for the most part, action amateurs. Could it be a combination that leads to the kind of overly dialogue-driven origin film, but with a ...

It looks as if Paramount will be releasing Iron Man in the U.S. beginning at 8pm on Thursday May 1st with the U.K. getting screenings as early as 11.50am on the same day.

OWF have people in place to see the movie in a special preview on Monday night and I believe I'm seeing the film either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Next week will most certainly be Iron Man week where we should have several reviews of the movie going up.

The summer kicks off next week and runs pretty much non-stop with huge movie after huge movie.

Not all of them can possibly live up to the hype but I'm really hoping the ratio of good/bad is way better than last year and the summer of 2006 both of which were TERRIBLE.

Can anyone predict a figure on Iron Man? Transformers, probably the last movie which had a similar amount of hype opened to $70 million on it's long weekend. I think this movie might open around the $55 million, I can't see it doing more than the big giant robots.

We have some late breaking news for you guys and it's one that is sure to dominate the OWF speak for the next several weeks. The shocking and out of the blue announcement has leaked that the amazing Iron Man trailer is said to be translated and adapted for a full length feature.

And it's less than a month away.

It's a greedy move from Paramount and one that has got fanboys worldwide proclaiming "Don't rape my childhood". There is just no artistic reason to do this, it's all for the sake of making a quick buck from the groundwork of material already shot.

Do you remember when George Lucas did the same thing for the awesome Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace trailer, the result was pretty disastrous but made $1 billion.

At least though they aren't re-casting the role and they have managed to secure Robert Downey Jr for the picture. Still I'm hardly hopeful. I just don't think they will be able to recapture the magic of the trailer...

A ton of Iron Man reviews have hit the web over the last 24 hours as we are getting real close to that May 2nd release date. You can read a load of them (probably spoiler filled) at AICN.

I've avoided them most for the fear of spoilers but there was one posted at Thompson on Hollywood which I spotted posted on /Film which I thought was interesting and free of spoilerific facts to post...
"It is a thinking person’s superhero film with more character development than special effects and action scenes (though there are plenty of those which are nicely balanced so we get involved in the story rather than bored by non-stop effects.). Downey is terrific…funny, smart and charming…and very buff. Paltrow seems right out of 60’s superhero comics or Money Penny from early Bond: proper and subservient assistant who is smart below the surface and more than a little enamored of her boss. It should be a hit but 200 million is a long way to go when it is undercut in subsequent weeks by more blockbusters.”
Sounds perfect!

So if we look at the track record of films made from Marvel properties, I have it pinned down like this...

AWESOME

Spider-Man

Spider-Man 2

There's a really cool clip for Iron Man over at the film's official website, showcasing part of the scene "Run Before You Can Walk".

It's actually pretty neat and hopefully shows that Jon Favreau is going to keep us close to Robert Downey Jr's character as we see his journey from Tony Stark into Iron Man, which is a great thing because the character can sometimes not be that likeable.

It's a non-spoiler clip and will hardly ruin the film for you so it's well worth a look.
