Jon Favreau has debuted the first official still of Iron Man 2 over at USA Today and I love how the costumes are englufing him. The decision to become this superhero, but more specifically the decision to tell the world that Tony Stark is Iron Man is going to be new territory to explore in comic book movies.

We haven't gone down this path before. Should be pretty interesting to see where it leads, and whether it's that pressure which sends him into drinking?

Jon Favreau is a few days into filming on Iron Man 2 and already the set of his sequel is being stalked rigorously by fanboys, the press and the unemployed, with nothing else better to do, just like it was two years ago. Back then, such close scrutiny into what he was doing eventually yielded in the shutting down of IESB for most of a day when they posted a video of the movie's final battle.

Didn't hurt the box office in the end though did it Paramount, your movie only grossed $582 million worldwide, with another fortune on DVD and the catalyst for a blockbuster franchise. But anyway...

A site by the name of Spoiler TV have some snaps from the set, the first showing Robert Downey Jr. in full Tony Stark pose, even chomping at the bit of a cigar!

First appearance of Don Cheadle, stepping into the shoes of Terrence Howard in the role of Jim Rhodes...

Comedian Gary Shandling was also spotted. According to /film, he is playing a character by the name of Senator Stern.

And it turns out, despite every website on the planet discussing it today (well apart from us as you will notice we didn't), it turns out IESB's ...

UPDATED:

E! Entertainment have confirmed a February 14th scoop that Scarlett Johansson will play Black Widow, the soviet spy who has a good side in IRON MAN 2.

The role firmly sets her up for future movies, including THE AVENGERS in 2012.

Nikki Finke claims Johansson screen-tested for the role at the beginning of the year but lost out to Emily Blunt, but now Blunt is travelling with Jack Black's Gulliver, they went back to her and offered Johansson the part.

Physically she's not right, her acting style only suits love triangle drama's from what I've seen... it's kinda like asking Marilyn Monroe to play TOMB RAIDER.

Blunt was just right for the role... Johansson may be out of her depth here. When an actress like Eliza Dushku lobbied so hard for the role, I think Favreau dropped the ball on this one.

A further update, Variety adds that Rourke will be playing both Whiplash and Crymson Dynamo, some kind of mixing of two villains.

END OF UPDATE...

"A significant" higher offer from Marvel than the $250,000 that was originally put on the table has secured the signature of Mickey Rourke for IRON MAN 2 according to Nikki Finke.

Holding out for a better deal, just as Samuel L. Jackson ...

It's a good deal for both parties, so I'm not surprised to hear that Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel have come to a pay deal they can both agree on for the character of Nick Fury.

According to both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter tonight... Big Sam has agreed a deal with Marvel to play Nick Fury a further NINE times over the next several years, including in his own movie as the chief agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The deal includes the soon to be filming IRON MAN 2 and further in the future Marvel's tentpoles THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, THOR, THE AVENGERS and their respective sequels.

Jackson previously wanted the same kind of money he earned on the near $600 million worldwide grossing IRON MAN but Marvel have been reluctant to pay big money to their actors this time around. They went cheaper for Don Cheadle over Terrence Howard... they lowballed an offer to Mickey Rourke which has cost them the recently Oscar nominated actor and very nearly lost director Jon Favreau for the same reason.

We don't know the particulars of this specific deal but I would guess it was Jackson who negoitated down, for what in truth is an easy gig ...

Jon Favreau has confirmed to E! (via The Playlist) that 20th Century Fox have used their pre-agreed option from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA to nab actress Emily Blunt for one of the their tentpoles, casting her in GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, the upcoming adventure comedy starring Jack Black.

So it's confirmed she is out as Black Widow, which really sucks because she was the perfect actress for the role but of course she can't be in two places at once.

Filming on IRON MAN 2 will begin in just over two months so Favreau is likely to already be deep into the process of finding her replacement....

Now that Emily Blunt is out, who should play Emily Blunt in IRON MAN 2?
( polls)

Scarlett Johansson was rumored a few weeks ago to replace Blunt. Her recent hair dye has also fuelled this speculation, though I can't help but feel she is no good for a superhero role. And imaging her doing a Russian accent is a dreadful worry.

DOLLHOUSE actress Eliza Dushku has lobbyed for the part on Howard Stern and would be a really solid choice...

This seems to be the situation here regarding Mickey Rourke and IRON MAN 2.

Rourke desperately wants to "bring it" to the sequel. He wants to be in the movie, he wants to show the world that he is capable of starring in a huge Summer blockbuster and is a big enough actor to play a villain that can make several hundred million for Marvel.

But Marvel, trying to save a lot of money these days, won't pay him the same salaries as they are giving out to Robert Downey Jr or Gwyneth Paltrow.

They have lowballed him an offer no-one is surprised he turned down.

BUT, offer him the right kind of money and he will do it. It's the same kind of situation as to what he was in with GET CARTER, where the studio wouldn't offer him what he wanted and Sly Stallone, star of the picture, came in and paid the rest of Rourke's salary.

On this project he hasn't got a Stallone. But come Sunday night, he very well may have an Oscar on his hands for THE WRESTLER.

And that will mean gold, REAL GOLD for Rourke. And more gold from Marvel.

Two bits of sad news to broadcast here my fellow geeks.

First up, the lowball $250,000 offer from the recession hit Marvel to Mickey Rourke to play the main villain Crymson Dynamo in IRON MAN 2, proved to be too low for the actor.

He tells New York Magazine...
"Right now, we're not doing Iron Man 2," Rourke told us grimly.
Instead as we heard yesterday, he has now officially signed on to appear in THE EXPENDABLES which will shoot at the same time as Marvel's Tony Stark sequel.

Rourke owes Stallone a lot. If you watched that really inspiring interview last week between Rourke and Charlie Rose you will have heard the story that Stallone paid the majority fee to get Rourke to appear in GET CARTER at the turn of the century when the studio wasn't keen on his casting choice.

His role in GET CARTER was the beginning of Rourke's come back in the industry.

Simply put, Rourke owes Stallone a lot and he has turned down a high profile role as a thank you to Stallone and most likely for the better paycheck.

In other, kind of related news. AICN are now firmly back tracking on the Arnie in THE EXPENDABLES story we ran ...

According to EW's sources, if Emily Blunt bails on IRON MAN 2 to work with Jack Black on the comedy adventure film GULLIVER'S TRAVELS at Fox... then replacing her as Black Widow in the Marvel sequel might be Scarlett Johansson.

Their "sources around Hollywood" claim that Johansson is interested in the role which will lead onto bigger things in future films and Marvel of course are attracted by the big name.

I do genuinely like Johansson and despite her struggling to look comfortable in any role since MATCH POINT four years ago, I do think she is a really talented actress. She just needs the right material to shine and someone who knows how to use her because her range doesn't cover anything.

In my opinion, this is not the role for her. She doesn't have the figure of the Black Widow, the acting style or the believability to pull it off quite as easily as Emily Blunt, who after all was the perfect casting choice.

I could see Johansson as the seductive Poison Ivy in a Batman film but not as a superhero/villain in the IRON MAN franchise.

GULLIVER'S TRAVELS begins production on April 15th. IRON MAN 2 will shoot around then but currently ...

Don't panic, Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke will probably be in IRON MAN 2. Out of the Wrestlemania extravaganza, his small role in THE EXPENDABLES, and IRON MAN 2... it's the latter that is looking most likely to come off.

Even if they are only offering him about 10% of what Tom Hanks makes per Dan Brown movie.

But if he does eventually sign on, Rourke may not be the Russian villain Crymson Dynamo according to Robert Downey Jr

The actor hinted to MTV that instead Rourke would be playing "a semblance of both" Dynamo and the villain Whiplash.

You can find more about that Whiplash character HERE.

We await (and cross our fingers) over official signatures for both Emily Blunt (as Black Widow) and Mickey Rourke over the coming weeks.

Marvel's new policy of smaller wage packets might now have cost them Emily Blunt, who according to Variety is mulling over an offer to co-star in 20th Century Fox's adaptation of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS.

Both IRON MAN 2 (shooting in Manhatten) and GULLIVER'S TRAVELS (in the U.K.) will film in April and it's unlikely she will be able to commit to both, though her chances of doing so is said to be more optimistic this morning than it was a few days ago.

You would have thought it would be a no-brainer for Blunt after how successful IRON MAN was last year to star as Black Widow (and a role that she would grow into for future movies) but like I say, small wage packets compared with the big money Fox are likely to be throwing about and you can see why she has a dilemma.

There's also another factor in all this. Fox are said to have a "first look option" from a deal made way back during THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, which they could invoke to get Blunt to star in GULLIVER'S.

One actor who looks to have joined GULLIVER'S TRAVELS is FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL star Jason Segel who is in talks to ...

Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed to IGN that the recession has hit Marvel Films hard and that they can no longer afford him to pay him to make cameo's in IRON MAN 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS etc.

You can see him make the announcement in a video over at Worst Previews, which you can find HERE.

Marvel, remember, already dropped Terrence Howard from IRON MAN 2 because of his outlandish wages and swapped with Don Cheadle who was willing to work cheaper. From what we've been hearing also, Mickey Rourke is taking on a much decreased wage packet to play Crymson Dynamo in the sequel in the hope that the added exposure to his Oscar nominated turn in THE WRESTLER will see him right for a lot more roles in the next 10 years.

Or maybe it's just that he has seen the future and the days of the big wage packets are truly gone. Maybe Samuel L. Jackson is still living in a dream world. And well let's be honest, has he really been worth the money studio's have thrown at him over the past five years? Does his name really mean anything to a project these days?

Variety are now posting rumors. So bare this in mind, this is not an official confirmation.

But anyway, the trade industry publication say uber hot and uber talented Brit actress Emily Blunt from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (and if it ever gets released Universal's THE WOLF MAN), is the front runner to play Black Widow in IRON MAN 2.

Real name Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow is a soviet super spy who wears a skintight black costume that is enhanced by high-tech weaponry. Only in the comics eh?

She would be the femme fatale of the picture and would join Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke (pending expected contract agreements) as the third new nemesis for Downey Jr's Stark.

And the red-headed character in comic book form looks like this and if you know her arc, it could be a big setup for future movies...

Presumably they are also considering Rachel McAdams, another red-head who I remember being considered for the role of Pepper Potts before Gwyneth Paltrow won the part.

Not quite sure what's going on out there with IRON MAN 2 and Marvel at the moment. Director Jon Favreau, who was so talkative when he was making the original IRON MAN, hasn't said a word about ...

This seems legit, a trade announcement from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Jon Favreau has once again out done himself with his casting for the IRON MAN franchise.

Putting in doubt what AICN call a "premature casting announcement" for Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES, Mickey Rourke is in talks to play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coilsplay. He goes by the name Crimson Dynamo.

The Crimson Dynamo wears an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit's outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight. Subsequent versions of the battle-suit have featured upgrades of various kinds, by the Gremlin and other Russian scientists.
Both IRON MAN 2 and THE EXPENDABLES will be shooting at roughly the same time, it's probably going to be one or the other for Rourke. The sensible career choice of course would be to go for IRON MAN, which probably will also have the big money attached ...

Here's a superhero tidbit from this week which probably does carry some weight of truth behind it, namely because not only does it sound like the kind of smart move Marvel Films have been making recently but it's also sourced from Latino Review, who get it more often right than wrong.

LR say that Marvel will be further fleshing out their cross connections of their characters by having Tim Robbins play Howard Stark, the rich billionaire father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Howard Hughes like figure (without the insanity) who founded Stark Industries in more than one upcoming movie.

The character is expected to be used for FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (as that is set during World War II, a time when Howard Stark's business was thriving and he worked closely with the government) and in flashback scenes in THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 2.

LR don't mention this but I wouldn't be surprised if this also allows Jeff Bridges to return for IRON MAN 2 flashback scenes, showing his close bond with Howard Stark which just adds a little bit of tragedy to what happened to that character when greed took over.

Love the idea. Anything that grows the Marvel ...

Finally we are starting to scratch against the surface of mystery that surrounded the sacking of Terrence Howard from IRON MAN 2 which the trades quite conspicuously at the time said was for pay demands.

Entertainment Weekly report that there were two factors in Marvel's decision to let him go. The first was Terrence Howard's "difficult" behavior on the set of the film. They claim that Jon Favreau got so frustrated with Howard's attitude and performance that he spent way more hours than he should have chopping and basically minimalizing his role as Col. Jim Rhodes from a big character, to a supporting player.

Another problem was that in the early days of casting, Howard was brought on to the film when no other stars had signed a contract. Marvel, not expecting to get the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges for the movie, probably offered Howard too big a contract to sign on to secure the first big name for the film.

By the time it was evident that the top Hollywood names were interested in joining this comic book property it was too late for them to renogiate. Leaving Howard, with some of his performance on the ...

Though we expected at least two of these names to sign on for THE AVENGERS, it's still nice to get official confirmation from Marvel Entertainment today that Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau have signed on for the big Summer 2011 tentpole.

Downey Jr and Cheadle (as the new Jim Rhodes) will be part of the huge ensemble cast. Favreau, director of IRON MAN and it's upcoming sequel, will only executive producer. We can only speculate that his name is in the mix to also direct.

The press release gives us the first synopsis for the movie...
THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel spoke of Cheadle's involvement in the future of the franchise...
"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to ...

Terrence Howard has spoke for the first time in response to last week's shocking announcement that he was to be dropped from the IRON MAN sequel because of his pay demands, his character of Col. Jim Rhodes replaced with Don Cheadle.

Speaking to NPR, he called the decision "the surprise of a lifetime".

Speaking to NPR, he called the decision "the surprise of a lifetime".
"It was the surprise of a lifetime," he said. "There was no explanation. [The contract] just...up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up."
Interestingly, there is no denial from the actor that he was hunting out for more cash but it sure seems like the second chance that Jon Favreau got when he asked for a pay increase wasn't given to Howard on this occasion.

So far, Marvel, Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favreau have yet to publicly talk about the situation.

"Next time" said Terrence Howard's Col. Jim Rhodes admiring the IRON MAN suit in his good friend Tony Stark's basement towards the end of this year's Marvel epic.

It got me excited, I almost geeked out in the theatre much to the dismay of my girlfriend who didn't have a clue what I was talking about. For those in the know, it was clearly a not so subtle hint from director Jon Favreau that he wanted the character to grow in the sequel to take on the mantle of War Machine.

It's clear Favreau had big plans for Howard and they had a great bond. But once again, those tight-fisted idiots at Marvel (who remember, nearly dropped Favreau himself because he wanted a slight pay rise) have dropped the Howard from the movie's sequel and replaced him with the cheaper Don Cheadle.

It's pretty clear from the wording of The Hollywood Reporter that Cheadle was very much Marvel's casting and not Favreau's, the studio wanting him for this project for quite some time.

Well I'm shocked that Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. haven't walked on the project because of this. I mean I'm sure they put up a fight because it was clear from ...

Matt here, Jon Favreau and Iron Man's bigger than expected spotlight was quickly taken away this summer when The Dark Knight took over Hollywood and now the latest Marvel darling wants to retailaite with a whole movie shot in 3D. After some of those incredible action sequences in Batman, how can he not?

Speaking to Collider whilst promoting the new Iron Man Blu-Ray/DVD, he claims The Dark Knight was a "game changer" and if Marvel could stump up the cash, he would shoot the whole movie in IMAX!

Also on the same night most likely, he spoke to Coming Soon and offered these tidbits...

Robert Downey Jr, Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow are all on board for the next installment due in May 2010. He also expects to give himself a bigger role as Horace Hogan.

The Mandarin will almost certainly be introduced in the next film, but as a primary "big bad", we may have to wait till the third installment.

The storylines of "Demon in a Bottle" (where the drink gets the better of Stark) and the famous moment of when Rhodes takes on the Iron Man armor are expected to be played with. As Rhodes said in the last movie when staring ...
