So it's been a week now since the red carpet rolled its weary way back up the main steps of the Palais des Festivals, and high time I posted my closing words...

A Note On The Winners

Proof if ever it were needed that, despite the innumerate accusations that Cannes has steadily dumbed down since Tarantino walked away with the Palm d'Or, that the judges cannot be swayed by the often irresistible charms of the more commercial films in competition. Here follows a selection of the winners...

Palm d'Or Winner- The White Ribbon [Michael Haneke]
Grand Prix Winner- A Prophet [Jacques Audiard]
	Director- Alain Resnais [Wild Grass]
Jury Prize- Fish Tank [Andrea Arnold] Thirst [Park Chan-Wook]
	Actor- Christoph Waltz [Inglourious Basterds]
	Actress- Charlotte Gainsbourg [Antichrist]

A major shame that Ken Loach could come away with any more than the Ecumenical Prize for Looking For Eric- though no more of a surprise than the decision to ignore Taking Woodstock. Christoph Waltz's performance in Inglourious Basterds deserves as many plaudits as will surely come its way, with the holiest of all a good bet next February, but Charlotte Gainsbourg looks more than a little lucky to have been favoured over mesmerising new-comer Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank). But then, it has become ...

Days 7 & 8

Forgive my double-posting: yesterday was a bit of a write-off in terms of writing (though I did get to see two of the most enjoyable films I've seen during the whole run).

To explain the title: EVERYONE in France smokes, be they toddlers or the acient and decrepid. As someone who used to smoke avidly, thanks to Brad Pitt's cooler than fuck smoking style in Fight Club (yes I know, not the best justification, but it's better than saying it was down to peer pressure), it has been remarkably hard not to be swayed by the lure of stinky breath and orange fingers. I'm sure had I been hitting the Cannes party circuit, fighting off the attentions of the celebrity hordes I may well have gone back to the dark side. Just a thouht there.

Wednesday 20th May

Today was billed, as far as I was concerned, as the major day for screenings- with both Inglourious Basterds and Drag Me to Hell playing in quick succession, and both hitting the nail squarely on the head in terms of what I was hoping and expecting of them.

Regardless of what a lot of the criticism directed at Tarantino's flick would have you believe, ...

As Cannes is now breathing down everyone’s necks, especially mine, I thought something in honour of Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds would be a fitting tribute. So, without further ado, I present the top ten movie ensembles, hopefully you’ll pick up the kind of flavour I’m suggesting here…

10. The Longest Yard (1974)

Long before Adam Sandler turned Paul Crewe into a sanitised wimp, Burt Reynolds was creating the perfect anti-hero who somehow captured the hearts of cinema goers everywhere despite being homophobic, racist, and all punchy on his lady’s face. It might be an obvious exercise in authority bashing, but the original The Longest Yard still gets the hairs standing up on the back of my neck when Crewe’s boys stick it to the man on the prison playing field. The rag-tag gaggle of psychotics and murderers at the heart of the action- featuring Jaws himself Richard Kiel and genuine footballing article Ray Nitchke within their ranks- are undeniably one of the greatest group of characters to ever grace the screen.

9. Cannonball Run (1981)

Proof, if it were needed that an ensemble don’t necessarily need to be on the same team to be gripping- Cannonball Run channelled the frankly awesome energy of Smokey and ...

Wow, I can't imagine any news story getting me more excited this morning.

Quentin Tarantino, for the first time ever, will have an original score for one of his films in the upcoming INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. As any self-respecting Tarantino fan knows, he has in the past only ever used already written and performed musical themes or pop/rock songs to fill his soundtracks, and quite beautifully I might add.

I believe the only time in the past that Quentin has ever used an original score was when Robert Rodriguez contributed one piece of music to KILL BILL as his part of the return favour for Tarantino directing a segment of SIN CITY. Though I could be wrong on that point, he may have used others, but he has certainly used them only infrequently.

IGN (not that one, a website titled Italy Global Nation) carry the delicious news that Tarantino has HIRED my favourite ever composer, Ennio Morricone, 80 YEARS OLD TODAY, to score INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. Morricone is best known for his close relationship with the famed Sergio Leone who he worked with on each of his 7 movies, including the classic scores for the DOLLARS trilogy.

He won the honorary Oscar in 2007"in recognition of ...
