Stage two (being - the piece by piece revealing enough of what it's about to hook Joe Popcorn, because we are hooked already right?) of the marketing process for Inception began yesterday with Christopher Nolan showcasing lots of new footage from Warner Bros' big July release, to the ShoWest crowd in L.A.

Coming Soon's Edward Douglas' write-up is the most comprehensive on the web;
Nolan introduced the footage by saying that he couldn't promise that it would explain everything the film is about, but what he explained that it was "an action film told in a grand scale by a character played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who runs a team of people who have access to a technology that allows them to enter people's minds through their dreams." He described dreams as both intimate and infinite experiences that will allow one to go any place, so they went to six different countries to shoot it, and that he wanted to create an immersive experience similar to the ones he treasured when he was a child while watching the James Bond movies and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The footage shown was quite fascinating because it had a lot of enigmatic visuals similar to the ...

The excellent Movie Preview Critic has uploaded a rousing video essay preview of Christopher Nolan's new movie Inception (16.07.10), which demands your full attention all the way to the end, and absolutely should be forwarded to all your friends immediately.
It talks about "the power of the carte blanche", a privilege that Nolan has earned for himself after the huge box office success of The Dark Knight - allowing him to make such an obscure and expensive blockbuster at a major Hollywood studio. A personal passion project, but one that HAS to hit with a mass audience otherwise it's a failure.
The MPC compares it to when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg made Indiana Jones after Star Wars when Tarantino made Pulp Fiction and of course when James Cameron made Avatar.

It is the most in-depth analysis I've seen yet of what Nolan's new movie is about, and the MPC makes a great case for why it is the most important movie of the year. Here's a few excerpts, but you really should view the essay for yourself...

This is the potential power of movies and the inherent nature of story. To explore through fiction, the potential of human creative reality.

...with Inception, there is ...

It's not a new assumption, I know, but it's still worth repeating that Leonardo DiCaprio was partially cast as the lead for Inception (16.07.10) whether consciously or not by Chris Nolan, because of the striking physical resemblance DiCaprio shares with his director.

I think we can all agree on that being the case.

The practise of directors casting actors as extensions of themselves is nothing new and it happens frequently of course, but for Nolan to do it for the first time after five previous feature films, and in the first movie birthed from his own idea and script - well to me it screams "this is personal to me, this is me baring my soul".

Above, a new image from Inception as released by The L.A. Times.
Nolan's movie about "metaphysical heisting", his "fourth dimensional Bond movie" that seems to blend film noir with The Matrix and the dream theories of Sigmund Freud into a near $200 million summer blockbuster cocktail - is by any cerebral film-goers account, the most fascinating feature film to be released in 2010. Anyone who doesn't think so should be shot at dawn.

Directors casting actors with whom they share a physical resemblance to is not really anything new, ...

“This is the biggest challenge I’ve taken on to this point,” says Chris Nolan on his next movie Inception in a 13.01.10 L.A. Times interview with Geoff Boucher...
“We’re trying to tell a story on a massive scale, a true blockbuster scale – the biggest I’ve ever been involved with. We tried to make a very large-scale film with ‘The Dark Knight’ and with this one we wanted to push that even further.”

“I grew up watching James Bond films and loving those and watching spy movies with their globetrotting sensibility.... We get to do that here, not just geographically but also in time and dimensions of reality as well. We get to make a movie that’s expansive, I suppose you’d say, in four dimensions.”
Four dimensions Bond movie!!!!

Nolan's wife and frequent producer Emma Thomas said;
“It’s something that we had been talking about on and off for seven or eight years...Coming off of the ‘The Dark Knight,’ the only thing we really knew is that we wanted to do something more personal. It seemed like the right time to do this. The fact that it’s really just an enormous movie -- that wasn’t ever really a factor in the decision. This story lends ...

As we've said before, Chris Nolan is a true magician. There really is no better way of describing him and right now, he's playing us like a master showman. We don't really have a clue what Inception is about... that is we who don't go hunting for such things.

I'm told In Contention spoiled the prestige of the whole thing a while back, and if you wanna see the reveal to the magician's secrets before the big show - then go ahead. Just don't go repeating what you find on this site. And don't come back bitching to me when you've read, what you really didn't want to read and you know, what you really didn't want to know.

So if you're not one to hunt for spoilers and you know as much about Inception as what Warner Bros. & Chris Nolan have presented to you - then this movie really has a chance of being the next Matrix for you. And really, can you imagine knowing all the secrets to that movie before you went in to see it - what a travesty that would be.

When Nolan wants us to know what Inception is about, he will tell us. If that day ...

That teasing spinning top has fallen on InceptionMovie.com, and if you are patient enough to finish the proceeding maze game, you will be greeted with the first of what we hope is an inventive and ever expanding viral campaign (ala The Dark Knight) for Chris Nolan's highly anticipated "contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".

Here's the first official one-sheet poster!

Take a look closely. I'm certain there's clues hidden here...

Not all that dissimilar to a Joker poster from The Dark Knight, there's our lead Leonardo DiCaprio, a spitting image of Nolan himself from behind but with a gun in his hand rather than a camera.

DiCaprio's knee deep in water, a possible recurring motif of Inception (this does look like it's going to be futuristic film noir after all) and there's something in those clouds, I'm certain. Is it the face of God, a Swastika seems a good shout, or maybe a propeller wing or wormhole?

First Showing break down how you can come about accessing the above poster for yourself from the Inception website.
Once the top stops spinning, click it's top and you'll be taken to: yourmindisthesceneofthecrime.com. From there click the button to the left and you'll be ...

Only Christopher Nolan could keep the plot for a $180-200 million Warner Bros. summer blockbuster a secret but he has done an admirable job so far and even though I'm desperate to know what "the architecture of the mind" is all about, the truth is the less I know come next July, the better the experience for me.

Of course when a picture cost as much as to make as this one has, simply putting up the tag "from the director of The Dark Knight" and slapping Leonardo DiCaprio's picture on the poster isn't going to be enough, so Warners will no doubt make sure every man, woman and child is bombarded with knowing just exactly what the movie is about when 2010 rolls around.

Here's The Matrix esque, really dark and threatening trailer (loved the shot he has re-tooled from The Dark Knight, a shaky cam shot whilst a guy is being dragged away) which is such a tease. I think it's scored to a remix of the Joker theme...

Trust Christopher Nolan to tease us with a tedious spinning top to advertise his sci-fi movie Inception.

Is this the first act of his magic trick, has he got a hidden viral campaign up his sleeve? Or is it really just a spinning top. There's got to be more to it than that, surely?

I would love to hear your reactions to the short teaser trailer if you are attending screenings of Inglourious Basterds this weekend. I'm hearing the trailer will be online for all of us to see come Monday morning.

A boat load of set photo's have been released this week for Christopher Nolan's highly secretive Inception but nothing that really indicates much. Paris looks like Paris. DiCaprio just looks like DiCaprio. Ellen Page still looks impossibly young.

DiCaprio is making out with a chick I don't recognise. DiCaprio kind of oddly looks like a good looking Christopher Nolan, same hair/clothes style/posture. I now know thanks to a calling sheet that DiCaprio's character appears to be named COBB - which is also the name of the character in Nolan's first movie Following. Interesting.

None of this really gives me a clue as to what the movie is about. And the more I read about it, the more confused I get. A spy for AICN sent in a vague description of what we can expect to see from the teaser trailer for next July's picture which is set to be shown from tomorrow with some prints of Inglourious Basterds.
This was a very short teaser. It started with Christopher Nolan's name, then a flash of a spinning top, then "The Director of The Dark Knight", then a bird's eye view of a city. Then cut to Leonardo in a vehicle, looking on in horror, ...

The teaser trailer for the next cinematic entry from a director attempting to follow-on from the biggest movie of all time (I know Titanic made more money but The Dark Knight will be more significant) will have it's debut in front of Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic Inglourious Basterds, opening August 21st.

Or August 19th in the U.K. but no word if we are getting it too. Of course I'm talking about Chris Nolan and his sci-fi action drama Inception.

Security has been water-tight on this project for months at Warner Bros. who are desperate not to let script details leak at the request of Chris Nolan who wants to be able to surprise and wow us come July 15th 2010. So I wouldn't expect too much from the trailer, maybe just a glimpse at the plot but I'm sure he has the first act of his magic trick marketing meticulously planned out and it will tease us enough to get us excited.

We know who will star, and it's a great cast of names (DiCaprio, Cotillard, Watanabe, Caine, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Cillian Murphy) but we know very little else except it's got a huge budget (possibly over $180 million), ...

According to the guys that run Nolan Fans, the very secretive July 2010 released WB science fiction movie Inception has filmed in the following U.K. locations...

Farnborough Airport last Friday...

University College London last week. Oliver's Arrow, appears to be the fake title of the movie...
The film crew for "Oliver's Arrow" today invaded UCL's Wilkins building to film some scenes in various locations within the Main Library. Michael Caine, Leonardo di Caprio and Ellen Page were on location filming scenes in what had been dressed up (with fake signage) to be the "Bibliotheque" of the "Ecole de Architecture" in France.

They continue...
From what we're been able to hear so far, there was a scene being shot in the Flaxman Gallery (a section of the Main Library on campus) with Leonardo DiCaprio's character being introduced to a graduate student named Ariadne (possibly Ellen Page) by Michael Caine's character. Apparently, DiCaprio's character had a job offer for her. We've also heard that some other scenes were being shot in a lecture theater, a reading room, and some other locations inside the Main Library.
The $150-$200 million project, based on Chris Nolan's original concept and script is still being kept firmly under-wraps.

According to The Calgary Sun, Warner Bros. have entrusted $200 million, i.e. around 1/5th of the worldwide box office gross of the phenomenally successful 2008 superhero blockbuster The Dark Knight to it's British director Christopher Nolan who is about to begin filming his original self scripted science fiction epic Inception in five different countries.

A large shoot in Kananaskis, Alberta (around the Canadian Rockies) is planned with Fortress Mountain said to be a spot hand-picked by Nolan during a helicopter scouting session. An “elaborate set” is to be built, with potentially "thousands" of local workers to be employed to build it (which explains where the money is going). A batcave in the snow? (no before you say it, Inception is not a secret working title for Batman 3).

Now newspapers generally enjoy the luxury of exaggerating predicted budgetary costs but with Nolan and his actors being so secretive over just what Inception is about (reminiscent of what James Cameron has done with Avatar), you have to wonder just how large Nolan is thinking here. We had previously heard $150 million but maybe Nolan has asked for a little more, waiving a Batman mask in front of execs as a reminder that it's money he ...

One of the funniest and quite frankly desperate fanboy hopes of recent years is getting some play around fansites and message boards right now. A significant audience are predicting that Chris Nolan's original science fiction movie at Warner Bros. titled Inception, is actually a mask for something much bigger. They claim it's actually a working title for a third Batman movie, a way to keep the press of Nolan's back a little during production and to not give away any secrets too early.

They cite the lack of a real plot for the movie other than the line; "set within the architecture of the mind" and the casting of a couple of old Batman faces, i.e. Michael Caine (Alfred), Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow) and via today's Hollywood Reporter, the newly cast Ken Watanabe (who played a fake Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins, though his character is dead) and the fact it's setup once again at Warner Bros.

Fanboys have also become intrigued by the castings of Marion Cotillard (who as I have mentioned would make a great Catwoman), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who seems more and more like the logical choice to replace Heath Ledger's The Joker, the more you think about it) and now ...

You know earlier this week I was talking about Christopher Nolan working with actors multiple times that he feels comfortable with?

Well, we have more proof of that today thanks to MTV News who snagged an interview with the director's Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight actor Michael Caine who hinted that he could soon team-up with Nolan for the fourth movie in a row, the top secret science fiction set within the "architecture of the mind", known as Inception.

“I think there might be a part for me...I will know this week if I’m going to be in it,” Caine said.
Fantastic news. Caine has been the moral backbone of Nolan's last few movies, the sympathetic character we can all side with. The man with the big heart, who just wants to do the right thing but is always well aware of the darkness that can plague man's mind, and his actions.

For the most part in Nolan's filmography, Caine has had the job of masking the movie's exposition, usually in the form of an anecdote (the forest in Burma story from The Dark Knight is a prime example) but he has perfected the technique so well, you barely register the screenwriter's tool of telling ...

Warner Bros. are in talks with 2008 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, 2008 Oscar nominee Ellen Page and the Scarecrow himself Cillian Murphy to star in Chris Nolan's science fiction film Inception says today's Hollywood Reporter.

The film which Nolan wrote as his first original solo written script will begin production in the summer with Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role. The movie has the release date July 16th, 2010 already attached.

Nolan, who always likes to tease, has yet to release anything more than this as a plot...
"contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".
BUT, we do have some character details at last.

DiCaprio will play a CEO-type executive, Cotillard is his wife. Page is a young college grad and sidekick to DiCaprio.

They also reveal that James Franco was ready to sign onto the project but had to drop out when a schedule was picking up for his stoner comedy adventure film Your Highness with David Gordon Green. Presumably he was up for the role that Cillian Murphy eventually nabbed.

Nolan has a great eye for casting, everything from the major roles all the way down to the small supporting players. Cotillard in a year's time should be a household name when ...

Leonardo DiCaprio chooses his projects very carefully.

Watching an interview on Charlie Rose for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, he genuinely mentioned he didn't know where the next few years were going to take him, as he is only on the lookout for films that will challenge him and they aren't easy to find.

But he's hit the jackpot today. Variety say Christopher Nolan, one of the top five in the business today has hired him to lead INCEPTION, the sci-fi summer epic that he wrote and will direct as his next movie at Warner Bros.

The movie is aiming for a release next summer and all we know is that it's "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".

DiCaprio is at the top of his game right now. If it wasn't for the fact it was a particularly strong year for leading male performances, he would have been right up their with a shout at Best Actor for his performance in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD.

Love the idea of him doing sci-fi. Love the idea of him working with Nolan!

Wonder what this movie is about?

Warner Bros. have been working out their strategy of releases for the next two years and have come up with a game plan that looks something like this according to ercboxoffice.

The final part of the Hogwarts movies, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II will hit theatres on July 15th 2011, some eight months after PART I.

At the moment that is the same release date as Marvel's epic ensemble THE AVENGERS but there's time for movement on that one, I can't see both of them liking the idea of competing with one another.

GREEN LANTERN, the next Warner Bros. character to get a tentpole will be released on Dec. 17th 2010. This marks a distinct change for Warner Bros. who always bring their comic book characters to the dance as Summer epics and is a distinct risk, trying to see if the market can hold up a Christmas release.

It worked for I AM LEGEND in 2007 but can it work for a costumed character?

CASINO ROYALE and THE MASK OF ZORRO director Martin Campbell is in charge and will be picking his LANTERN very soon to hit that release date.

Meanwhile, JONAH HEX which is slightly ahead in terms of production time, ...

... an original sci-fi thriller he wrote titled INCEPTION, which he be produced by his wife and THE DARK KNIGHT producer Emma Thomas. The story broke in tonight's The Hollywood Reporter.

INCEPTION is described as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind."

I'm not quite sure what the hell that means but it sounds absolutely fantastic and I can't tell you how delighted I am to see Nolan join the number of high profile directors tackling sci-fi right now, a genre in great need of a boost.

INCEPTION will shoot this Summer and all being well should hit theatres mid-2010. This will be one of Warner Bros. biggest movies of next year as they currently have no comic book movie set for release (everyone doubts a proposed GREEN LANTERN could be ready in time).

As expected, Nolan doesn't wanna be seen as just the BATMAN guy and is once again helming a movie in between two Warner Bros. smash hits. It mirrors what he did with his smaller, more personal project THE PRESTIGE which began casting almost immediately after BATMAN BEGINS hit cinemas.

Though INCEPTION sure doesn't sound like just a small flick.

You all know I'm the biggest Batman fan around ...
