When I look at the state of the Hollywood machine these days, with the same darlings of the industry continually picking up work more on the strength of their brand than on their art, I wonder where the really original injection of work will come from. It's all well and good suggesting new-fangled technological advances that will shift the silver screen onto another plane of existence, but there has to be stylistic and creative progression to back up the advances in the trade or you end up with an empty headed goddess. Like MeganFox sort of...

So to come across a film like Pop Skull, which makes a mockery of the term micro-budget and still manages to be an excellent experience is a good little turn up for the books. And one that shouldnt be underestimated. Here we have the perfect example of how to make a film that has a real statement to make (as well as one that can easily be classed alongside the better recent horrors) but which manages to do so without any financial muscle at all- that it got any kind of distribution deal outside of digital providers is both wondrous and testament to its surprising ...

On the face of it, this story fromare Mental Floss (and soon to be followed up by Wired and Popular Science) looks like scientists once again spending millions of pounds telling us what we already know. Horror movies are scary- or at least they inspire activity in the centres of the brain that monitor emotion (particularly fear). That revellation is thanks to research by film producer Peter Katz, he of Pop Skull fame (see my review of the film here). True, this is by no means a new thing- marketers have used the technique to monitor responses in test audiences for a while now- but it has never been quite so contrived, it has never been so specifically employed to see whether a film retrospectively affects its audience the way it intended

But shouldnt research money be put to better use? Forget curing cancer, Igor, today we're going to see how many Reese's Pieces a marmaset can fit in its mouth!

All sarcasm aside, could this spell a new dawn of conscious film-making where test audiences are hooked up to MRI machines to monitor their reactions to key passages of films? I can understand the appeal- gone will be the days of luke-warm "horror" flicks that claim to ...

What has happened to the horror villains of the 80s? Once upon a time we had Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Charles Lee Ray (Chucky) and, of course, Jason and Mrs. Vorhees. This decade was the heyday for character-driven horrors that saw a particular spectre terrorise the lives of innocent civilians. Nowadays we just can't match that kind of wild imagination, we are stuck with churned out remakes (we've seen MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D and FRIDAY THE 13th already in the last month) or botched reworkings of Asian psychological and supernatural horrors (let's just not watch THE UNINVITED). The only thing that came close was SAW's Jigsaw, but he's been dragged on for so long that even some original fans have drifted away from the franchise. So where did it all go wrong?

The horror villain has been around for as long as horror itself, so there's no point going way back. But the orgiastic killing held together purely by a frightening and well-constructed killing machine began to take shape in the 70s. Gone were all the draculas and mummies and indiscriminate ghosts, they metamorphosed into something far less recognisable. Ghosts inhabited bodies which themselves became scary, like in THE EXORCIST, and ...

Could MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN be the first good slasher movie since the remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE?

Oh, don't get me wrong that movie wasn't a patch on the original but it wasn't too bad a slasher movie either... at least compared to some of the other remakes we've had to endure recently.

New poster for the below below, from those good folks at Bloody Disgusting.

This is probably our best hope of a good slasher film this year and I think it looks really strong. I really liked the trailer that we premiered for this back in September and I wouldn't be surprised if this did DISTURBIA numbers at the box office.

Really cool trailer, which since it's been a while since he played it the first time I will post for you again.

Has it done enough to win your cash?

Six months and a day since it was first announced that Horror legend John Carpenter was to return to film-making after a six year absence, and we carry the news that casting has finally begun on his horror movie L.A. GOTHIC with shooting set to begin in March.

The horror movie setup at Principal Entertainment will be Carpenter's first flick in seven years, the biggest break between projects he has ever had in his career and personally, thank God his last film won't be GHOSTS OF MARS.

L.A. GOTHIC follows five interwoven stories of extreme horror centering on a vengeful ex-priest and his efforts to protect his daughter from vampires, monsters, zombies and other supernatural evils from the dark side of Los Angeles.

It comes from the writing duo of Sean Keller and Jim Agnew who just yesterday found Ray Liotta and Vincent Gallo cast in the project spawned from their script for GIALLO, which is said to be a love-letter to Dario Argento's 70's style of film-making which the Italian maestro liked so much he agreed to helm.

Have the duo made the same kind of love letter for Carpenter's best work, and enticed him back into film after his self-exiled absence? Let's ...

Italian horror legend Dario Argento will shoot GIALLO as his next feature, a movie's who title and tone will be reminiscint of the Giallo genre which made the helmer's name in the 70's. His suspense Giallo movies like THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and THE CAT O'NINE TAILS would focus on heavy amounts of blood and gore with a heavy operatic tone and slasher film whodunit plots and sexual eroticism.

They were films that were as exciting and fresh in the 70's as the Hammer Horror films playing in England and since the end of that decade they have quickly been dying out.

Argento did return to the dead genre six years ago with SLEEPLESS but now comes word from Variety that he is going full-on homage with GIALLO, an English-language slasher film written by American scribes Jim Agnew and Sean Keller.

GIALLO will star French actor Vincent Gallo and will be the typical slasher affair, with Gallo expected to play the psycho killer and Ray Liotta in talks to play the solitary cop who wants to take him down. The director's daughter Asia Argento has also been cast.

Filming begins next month in Turin, the same place he shot THE MOTHER OF ...

Ok so we've had Harry Knowles practically make love to CLOVERFIELD and then eat it up for lunch but one man's review, a classic movie does not make.

Thankfully, he's not the only one smitten with the monster movie. It played last night and the reviews have been universally great. Check them out below the image.

"I'm still trying to comprehend the film I just watched. It really is like no other monster movie you've ever seen...It's wonderful, it's frightening and it's truly a breath of fresh air"
. - Erik Davis, CINEMATICAL
"Cloverfield is a fun movie. Plain and simple. It’s sit back, relax and go. It’s a roller coaster ride. JJ Abrams wanted to make an American monster movie, and he has done just that. Cloverfield is not a Godzilla rip-off, it’s the reinvention of the monster film". - Peter Sciretta, SLASH FILM
"This unpredictability is ultimately what really makes the film work. Cloverfield is a ride with more “holy s***” moments than any film in recent memory. But what about the monster(s)? You see more of them than you’d expect but less than any other similar movie. They are pretty frightening when they are on screen, but the mystery that surrounds them ...

George A. Romero's latest addition to his zombie saga, the low-budget hand-held movie DIARY OF THE DEAD has been the least anticipated Romero-zombie fest in recent memory.

The movie has barely earned itself a theatrical release (it will run limited next month in the U.S.) and despite a really killer concept (BLAIR WITCH meets Zombies), the film the trailer makes the horror feature look like a huge disappointment.

Actually that's not true. A HUGE MONUMENTAL DISAPPOINTMENT is probably more fitting. First George tells us about the film, and then the trailer follows...

Time to face facts people. Romero hasn't shot a good in over twenty years.
I know he deserves his legendary status because he did so much for the zombie genre but I just don't think his name can be marketable when his last good film was in 1985.
This looks way worse than LAND OF THE DEAD and from the trailer, it seems that Romero is a director who has ran out of creative ideas. And the thought that he Romero is prepping a sequel to this just makes me even more disinterested.

TEETH is a movie about man's absolute worst fear, the idea that the myth of the vagina denta (toothed vagina) being true... and on a hot woman no least.

It's a black comedy and it premiered at last year's Sundance film festival from feature virgin writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein, starring Jess Weixler and John Hensley.

The movie has the near impossible task of going up against CLOVERFIELD this weekend on a limited release and in an effort to generate some buzz about the flick, Roadhouse Attractions have uploaded the opening 5 minutes of the movie for our viewing pleasure.

Wanna peak inside, or are you worried about being bitten? Love this opening (despite it's hammy acting) and I wanna feel more, no matter how much it hurts...

So a good number of people have now seen CLOVERFIELD at special advanced screenings around the U.S, some of which thankfully are talented artists and have generously drawn out what the monster looks like for us.

This can most certainly be considered as a spoiler and it's been the best kept secret in Hollywood for a while now, and if you can just wait a little longer then don't look below or indeed read any comments that might be attached to this article.

SPOILERS... DO NOT CLICK BELOW IF YOU WANT YOUR FIRST LOOK AT THE MONSTER TO BE STARING AT YOU ON A GIANT SCREEN

The look of the monster falls exactly in line with Harry Knowles description from his review...
"I think it might’ve been a four-legged beastie… it has a tail, it has teeth and freaky eyes like that horse that died in ANIMAL HOUSE. It’s kinda of a grayish-yellowish-off-white looking thing. But more important than the creature is what this fucker does. He basically goes bug-nuts".
Looks a little reminiscent of the monster in the Korean movie THE HOST.

So Sundance is vastly approaching and the press clips and buzz are starting to fester around some of the movies.

Remember last year's festival saw movies like ONCE (which was 6th on my top ten of the year), IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON (great documentary), GRACE IS GONE (yet to see) and ROCKET SCIENCE in competition... all of which got a theatrical run of note last year.

So here's the first movie we are going to give a little coverage to. It's FEAR OF THE DARK (PEUR DU NOIR), a French animated film from as many as 8 different directors according to it's IMDB entry.

Looks really, really cool... like a weird Tim Burton movie with a score right out of SIN CITY. As good as it looks, the question must be would you really pay to see a movie that looked like this?
Six graphic artists and cartoonists have breathed life into their nightmares, bleeding away color only to retain the starkness of light and the pitch black of shadows. Their intertwined stories make up an unprecedented epic where phobias, disgust and nightmares come to life and reveal Fear at its most naked and intense.

The image you see above could be some random scribbling on a day dreaming school kid's notepad. Or maybe a quick rendering for a comic book. It could be many things. However you wouldn't immediately think it was concept art for the sequel to one of the best monster movies of recent times. That is, however, exactly what it is.

The image comes from Kang Full, the writer who has delivered a script for THE HOST 2. If you haven't seen THE HOST then I strongly urge you to buy it. I am not a fan of the horror genre as a whole; it's stale, uninspired and too reliant on cheap and quick remakes or endless sequels (see SAW). THE HOST is something else entirely. Trailer is embedded below.

Whether or not this film falls in to the trap of many other horror franchises remains to be seen. Yet with such an inspired movie first time out you'd hope it would be able to recapture some of the magic.

SciFi Japan reports the following:-
"According to the official press release and reports from various Korean news sites, THE HOST 2 will take place in Cheonggyecheon (or Cheonggye Stream), a creek running through ...

Shock Till You Drop have the exclusive word that Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures Company are teaming with Mandate to bring us BURST, an original horror project they are sending out to directors.

Official plot below. Sounds an awful lot like the studio's 30 DAYS OF NIGHT adaptation...
"An isolated town endures an alien invasion that causes victims to spontaneously combust during a severe snowstorm."
Just simply exchange the vampires for aliens.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT took home $62 million worldwide and will have made a profit for the studio as it was budgeted for half of that but it might not have made enough for a guaranteed sequel.

Ghost House Pictures have hardly been a mark of quality down the years but at least it would seem they have dropped the J-Horror remakes and are pushing forward with some original material.

The saga of Freddy Krueger's next nightmare continues over at New Line.

The situation seems to be this. The studio have seen the financial success in the returns of the 'real' big horror franchises like DAWN OF THE DEAD ($69 million domestic), HALLOWEEN ($58 million domestic) and the inevitable big money that FRIDAY THE 13TH will make next February.

They know that Freddy's last outing against Jason made them huge cash but also kinda killed the character also, leaving him with little room for future adventures... unless they hit the remake switch. So it's a simple formula, Freddy = cash. But they need to figure out the best way to bring him back. Teaming him against Jason again or even Ash from THE EVIL DEAD would make instant money but doesn't leave as much room as a sequel/remake/restart or whatever.

Here's the official word on the future of Freddy Krueger from an unofficial source that spoke to Bloody Disgusting...
Our anonymous source tells us that as of right now, today, this very moment there are NO immediate plans for Freddy vs Jason 2. Bummer. But there is some good news! We've been informed that New Line is actively developing another Nightmare on Elm Street movie. ...

If your crazy enough to actually want to see the crappy looking remake of the Korean horror movie ONE MISSED CALL this weekend (shockingly, the only wide release movie in the U.S.) then you will be treated to this trailer for PROM NIGHT, which just happens to be another crappy looking horror remake.

Though PROM NIGHT has something going against it that most other remakes don't. The original movie, despite the interesting to watch Jamie Lee Curtis, was absolute crap.

Yes I can see the good in remaking a shitty movie and attempting to make is something worthwhile but we all know that isn't the case here. It's come out because HALLOWEEN was being remade, and Screen Gems were looking to capitlise on a genre revival. Good luck with that, I fear a flop for this one when it opens in April...

Trailer for the original movie below. Have they dropped the killer phone stalking from the original because of SCREAM perhaps?

After a critical disaster, a financial disappointment and a deflated series that can now only attract rookie directors, where does both the ALIEN and PREDATOR franchise go from here?

Of course team-up movies are nothing new and have existed for several decades, the aftermath of which have either seen the characters take on different foes (as in the case of KING KONG vs. GODZILLA, as both would move onto other targets in later movies) or the battle between the two juggernauts FREDDY vs. JASON, citing the reboot button to be firmly pressed on those characters. A FRIDAY THE 13th restart will be in theatres by February of next year and it won't be too much longer after that when Freddy makes his return.

ALIEN and PREDATOR have fought each other twice now and the figures for the latest movie have shown the series is showing sure signs of fatigue...
ALIENS (1986) - $85.1 million (opened at $10 million)

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (2004) - $80 million (opened at $38.2 million)

ALIEN (1979) - $78.9 million (opened at $3.5 million)

PREDATOR (1987) - $59.7 million (opened at $12 million)

ALIEN 3 (1992) - $55.4 million (opened at $19.4 million)

ALIEN RESURRECTION (1997) - $47.9 million (opened at $16.4 million)

PREDATOR 2 ...

There will come a point sometime soon when every George A. Romero classic has been remade and you know, if they were all made as well as Zack Snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD remake than that would make me a pretty happy guy.

Sadly a remake as good as that only comes around once in a while and after months of speculated trouble, Steve Miner's remake of DAY OF THE DEAD will be skipping a theatrical release and will go straight to DVD in April.

Couldn't they have done that with his LAKE PLACID, HALLOWEEN H20 and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III aswell and saved wasting more hours of my life?

D standing for DVD in it's tagline presumably.

The movie which stars Ving Rhames and Mena Suvari, actually looks like it has nothing to do with the original at all. You can watch it's ridiculously boring trailer below.

Good riddance to this pile of crap and let's be thankful we can instead see the remakes of PROM NIGHT and Rob Schneider's written and directed con-man movie BIG STAN instead. Oh, happy days!

Eli Roth's been beaten in his attempt to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's novel CELL. Well, unofficially at least.

There's a full length trailer online for THE SIGNAL, a very low budget movie that got some exposure at various festivals this year but without the heavy juggernaut of a guy like J.J. Abrams behind it... it didn't get a huge theatrical run or anyway near the exposure CLOVERFIELD received.

Written and directed by three young film-makers, the movie borrows extremely heavily from Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND and also as mentioned King's CELL (which in turn was influenced by Matheson) in depicting a world which has gone to hell because of a mysterious transmission that plays through electronic devices and sends everyone into crazed killers.

It's the perfect 'media paronia' movie.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER IN HD

You will be able to catch it on DVD in February, as it's short and limited theatrical run has already been and gone.

We've certainly entered a filmic period where the most effective and popular horror seems to the 'end of the world' scenario... is that saying something about the climate we live in?

THE SIGNAL looks ok, maybe a little gimmicky and full of 'jump cuts' ...

Sam Raimi's less than enjoyable experience on SPIDER-MAN 3 may see the end of that franchise under the director's wing, and as it each day passes it looks more and more likely that he won't be the man to bring SPIDER-MAN 4 to the big screen.

He's had a ton of offers to direct other things and the likelihood is that he will soon be offered big money to direct THE HOBBIT, but here's word of a new project (well actually old, but read on) that he has attached himself to direct which would seen him return to the horror genre for the first time since THE GIFT...

Variety say Raimi will direct DRAG ME TO HELL, a horror movie he wrote alongside his brother Ivan Raimi and is a joint venture between Ghost House Pictures and Mandate. Raimi has worked on at least a dozen horror projects as producer under the same partnership with THE GRUDGE, BOOGEYMAN, THE MESSENGERS and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT but this is the first time he will direct one for the studio he created.

The film is described as a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse and it will go into production sometime ...

Emily Blunt put in one of my favourite female performances last year as the rather bitchy but desperate to succeed p/a to Meryl Streep in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and she is probably one of the more exciting young actresses' out there.

I can't wait to see what should be her breakthrough role in THE YOUNG VICTORIA, where she should once again bring us her powerfully strong accent and mean but assured deliverance of lines. The younger life of one of England's most famous Monarch's should make for some fascinating viewing when it opens next year.

Back to today's news and CHUD.com are carrying the 'all but confirmed' rumor that Blunt is up for the role of Benicio Del Toro's love interest in the remake of THE WOLFMAN to be directed by ONE HOUR PHOTO helmer Mark Romanek and to co-star the legendary Anthony Hopkins.

In the original 1941 film, the love interest was a Welsh girl named Gwen (played by Evelyn Ankers) who ran an antique shop.

Despite the 16 years age gap between the pair this actually suits the film, as Evelyn was 23 when she played the part in the 40's when the great Lon Chaney Jr was 41.

What a cast ...
