Much more Heath Ledger than I expected in the long awaited trailer for The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, a movie that OWF's Simon Gallagher analysed almost frame for frame at the Cannes Film Festival, a movie he says is one of "Gilliam's best".

And when he says "Gilliam's best", that actually means something, compared to if I had said "Gilliam's best" as I am most certainly not a fan of his output for the most part, with a couple of exceptions.

Lionsgate will open the film this October in the U.K., and if your anything like me then there's nothing much more than a curiosity for seeing Heath Ledger's last performance that warrants seeing this - which by the way, judging from the trailer contains a post-The Dark Knight confidence that it's heartbreaking to think we won't now see grow and grow into bigger and more significant parts.

@ Yahoo! Video

After the jump, an excerpt from Simon's review...

... at one point I began to dread the moment in the film where it would become obvious that Ledger had died (the appearance of Johnny Depp, Jude Law or Colin Farrell effectively sounding the death note) which tainted even the most fantasticalGilliam-inspired scenes. This is the hand that fate ...

There's a insane story floating around the web right now, instigated by the late Heath Ledger's agent who has come out with the outlandish claim that Ledger was actually trying to get himself fired from The Dark Knight with his unique and "out there" performance as The Joker.

Which of course is utter insanity because simply put, you don't win an Oscar by trying to get yourself fired. No sir. That's not how it works.

You watch his performance as The Joker, which I'm sure you all have a thousand times and you try and tell me that Ledger hasn't spent many hours locked away in a dark room all by himself (as reports at the time suggested) carving out this crazy character. The anxiety from playing The Joker killed the guy, remember?

If he was truly trying to get himself fired, there's far easier ways of going about it. Turning up late, not bothering, being an asshole on set, etc.

Here's what Worst Previews have quoted from Vanity Fair...
According to Ledger's agent Steven Alexander and cinematographer/friend Nicola Pecorini, the actor had a pay-or-play deal on "Knight," which means that he would be compensated no matter how terrible he ends up being. This gave ...

Status: Out of Competition

For the second time in a little over 48 hours I find myself confronted by a film that is so much an expression of its director's artistic manifesto that its identity is difficult to remove from his own. Terry Gilliam, like Tarantino, asks his audience to buy into his ethos: to accept that the film he is presenting is not necessarily going to be a commercial or critical success, but that it remains true to what he has set out to achieve across his whole canon of work. In that respect the film does not disappoint- Gilliam creates a familiar dream-scape mixed with garish pallet and sweeping surrealist bursh-strokes, and he doesnt go as far as letting such a trivial thing as the traditions of narrative get in the way. For this director at least, the story is merely a way for the audience to buy into Gilliam's imagined world, to marvel at his artistic vision, and allow themselves to be taken over by the escapist fantasy of the film. The fact of the matter is, even the most ardent Gilliam fan couldnt really tell you what Brazil is about, or offer any kind of evaluation of Fear ...

“Oh how they will love me when I’m gone.” said Orson Welles late in life, the great master ever nearing his Rosebud moment by then and feeling more than a little nostalgic over his past achievements and obviously bitter over how he wasn't been lauded at that time as one of the greats.

He was proven right of course and in 2009, is regularly thought of as a visionary, born decades before his time and whose first film as a writer, director, producer and star in Citizen Kane is one of the very best films ever made.

And with the media uproar and sudden sympathy for British "celeb" Jade Goody, it appears it's not just those who have actually achieved something in life who are given a higher stature when they are no longer with us, but also publicity whores, who tragically die young.

And with rumors of a Jade Goody biopic being rushed out to captailiase on her new found fandom, I'm really struggling to work out how The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus has so far failed to pick up a U.S. distributor when it features the last performance of a truly great and popular actor.

Awards Daily have posted this very cool little table of domestic grosses for the movies expected to be in with a shout at Oscar nominations today...

As The Joker says, "it's not about the money. It's about sending a message".

THE DARK KNIGHT sent a message to the rest of the world in 2008 that a comic book movie could be as good as every other genre. That artistically it could match up to the best drama's, the best thriller's, that it could be as smart with as deeply intriguing themes and characters as any other film made today. Not since THE LORD OF THE RINGS have we seen a massive blockbuster do anything of the same.

It's an important film that history demands to remember with Oscar glory. It's not that it's the second biggest movie of all time and broke every single opening weekend record going. It's already in history books for that. Heath Ledger too has cemented his Hannibal Lector type status into the echelons of infinite time.

But the Oscars are important. They are remembered.

TITANIC was a majorly popular release in the late 90's, of course the biggest movie of all time and it still is despite Batman and The ...

One day after the Academy Award nominations are announced for 2009 and Warner Bros. will re-release THE DARK KNIGHT with a nationwide U.S. release on January 23rd. No word on whether the movie will be returning to U.K. cinema's.

Clearly WB are hopeful for nominations for both the movie and Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker. Of course, any nominations for the film will generate general interest with those of the viewing public who might have dismissed a comic book movie the first time around and will also bring a celebratory feeling for comic book geeks who are seeing their medium recognized in quite a way it has never been before.

The move almost guarantees THE DARK KNIGHT will cross $1 billion worldwide as it's only $4 million short of that figure. It will stand beside TITANIC, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST as the only movies to ever achieve this.

If THE DARK KNIGHT can generate $77 million (a very healthy gross for a normal release should we not forget but this movie does keep breaking records) then it will become the biggest film of all time in the U.S, ...

"What Ledger created is a character so bereft of fear and restraint that he instills both in everyone around him, including the audience.

Going far beyond what was written in the script, Ledger fleshed out The Joker with hideous physical mannerisms and quirks that belie the inner turmoil of the character. It is a rich, full-bodied, and tremendously charismatic performance.

This one is special, for the ages, and deserving of recognition".

Academy Awards Process as detailed by Awards Daily...

Friday, December 26, 2008: Nominations ballots mailed
Monday, January 12, 2009: Nominations polls close 5 p.m. Pacific Time
Thursday, January 22, 2009: Nominations announced 5:30 a.m. PT, Samuel Goldwyn Theater

Warner Bros. have so far started campaigns for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Ledger, above).

Artist Lee Berjemo is an interesting figure in the shaping of Heath Ledger's look as the most famous comic villain in history... The Joker in this summer's THE DARK KNIGHT.

Back in 2006, when the popular rumor was that Australian actor Lachy Hulme was fan favourite to play the Crown Prince of Crime in the BATMAN BEGINS sequel, Berjemo came up with this concept drawing for what The Joker should look like based Hulme's appearance for Batman On Film.

What was so interesting about the image, apart from looking extremely creepy was that it was the first time The Joker had ever been portrayed with a "cut smile". A permanent scar which looks to have been crafted from a knife rather than from falling in the vat of acid.

It gave The Joker all kinds of added possibilities as to the mystery of his origins. Was he abused by someone, did he do it to himself etc.

Amazingly of course, based on this concept art.. Warner Bros. who smartly kept a close eye on fan talk and suggestions for THE DARK KNIGHT, modeled Heath Ledger's The Joker similarly to this look.

Now after much fan acclaim for the very modern feel to The Joker's look ...

Not strictly a teaser trailer, more like a behind-the-scenes sneak preview but this is still well worth your time and effort. I repeat WELL WORTH YOUR TIME AND EFFORT, don't skip it!

Terry Gilliam's next epic fantasy film THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS will officially mark the last outing for Heath Ledger who died some weeks into filming earlier this year. After a small disruption to the shoot, he was replaced by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell who if I remember rightly, all agreed to defer pay on the film to various charities that Ledger supported.

The trailer thingy is below. The movie has so many fantastic elements and shots, it's just impossible to take it all in. And then when Terry Gilliam runs down the plot details, well it sounds way more exciting than it ever did in print.

So I will let him tell you what's it's about. To me this looks like Gilliam tributing Gilliam (i.e. - all the best stuff of his career seems to have made his way into this movie)...

Rarely do you see movies on such an epic scope as this. The more I see this, the more I wish that Gilliam had been given ...

Ray wrote a really good article yesterday discussing the backlash (and boy we couldn't see that coming the moment he died, did we?) that has spread across the web like a sick virus that apparently the only reason we care and rave about Heath Ledger's stunning performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight is because the actor died in such tragic circumstances six months ago.

One thing that has got my blood boiling on three separate occasions in the last week is from people who I respect very well, great personal friends of mine (one actually family) who said such an ignorant comment. I've heard, "the only reason it's so high on IMDB is because the star is dead, the only reason it has such good reviews is because Ledger is dead, the only reason anyone cares is because Ledger is dead".

One even said, "the only reason it's doing so well is because he's dead". Who is dead? Do you even know his name, who he was, what role he plays? Do you have a mind of your own outside of what you see on BBC News or read in The Sun?

What ignorant bullshit. People are so quick to dismiss ...

"With a great performance, comes great responsibility."

The buzz about the supposedly legendary final performance of Heath Ledger began to build from the moment we lost him last winter. Trailers teased us with glimpses of Ledger's mad visage and creepy, taunting voice. Everyone began to ask each other, "Is this an Oscar-worthy performance? Can it live up to the hype?"

With the release of The Dark Knight last night, many have witnessed this final complete performance for themselves. While most seem to be awe-struck by Ledger's transformation, a mumbling backlash has emerged on the internet that attempts to diminish it. "We wouldn't even mention Oscar," they bravely declare in anonymous chatrooms, "had Heath lived."

To those out there attempting to denigrate this performance, I emphatically say: YOU ARE DEAD WRONG.

Without a doubt, the death of an actor - particularly a young, talented one like Ledger - often overvalues their last performances and their legacy. For instance, James Dean died at 24 years of age with only three major completed films to his credit. His death sent shock waves through Hollywood, and the resultant outpouring of emotion led to two posthumous Oscar nominations. Looking back, it is easy to see that Dean's performances did ...

The combination of Batman and that notoriously popular villain The Joker has done it again, breaking Hollywood records for the second time running.

It was back in 1989 that Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson & Tim Burton with the first serious adaptation of the Batman character produced the first movie to gross $100 million in ten days and caused a popular culture hysteria that would be unrivaled for nearly two decades.

But over the last couple of weeks, it has become clear that it has well and truly returned. Warner Bros. have gleefully announced that The Dark Knight starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger in the iconic roles created by Bob Kane and directed by Christopher Nolan has grossed $18.5 million on it's midnight screenings alone.

We hear the 3am and 6am screenings were well attended also, those figures still to come but the sheer fact they had screenings available at that time shows you how insane the popularity and craze this movie has caused.
Will there be a sight creepier on billboards this summer whilst you're driving to work than Heath Ledger's version of The Joker staring right at you - mega gigantic sized?

OK, so perhaps the posters showing a painfully embarrassing Mike Myers trying to recapture past glory for The Love Guru (which by the way has become this year's version of Evan Almighty - my piss-take mis-handled Summer movie)... but just look at that poster above. Oh, this is certainly not going to be a movie for kids!

Can this or any movie in the history of film possibly live up to it's lofty expectations?

Less than two months now until we can re-visit Chris Nolan's Gotham universe. I can't imagine any regular reader of this site not making the trip to see it, this movie is going to do gangbusters.

Check out two new covers for this month's issue of Empire. Hate these kind of big head covers but there ya go...

And Batman Got Milk too...

And...Here...We...GO!

I'm not a good enough writer to tell you how good this trailer looks - even in shitty youtube quality. I can't do it justice... the moment that Batman flies out of that Hong Kong building at the beginning (I think that's what it is anyway), I know this movie is going to rule in IMAX.

This is the best look and sound so far of Heath Ledger as The Joker and it's not as crazy a performance as the first trailer made it out to be. His voice can be a lot slower... a lot more subtle and sinister - it works terrifically well. It kinda sends a chill down your spine.

The dialogue here is incredible. The Nolan's have some of the best lines I've heard in any Batman medium for years (the city deserves a better class of criminal is so true for what they are trying to depict here)... and they haven't just copied lines from The Long Halloween or The Killing Joke.

The only thing I don't like is Maggie Gyllenhaal trying to be Katie Holmes - instead of being Maggie Gyllenhaal. You might as well have kept Katie Holmes for that.

Oh and another thing. One of the ...

Seriously guys... one scene of The Joker in a bodybag which would probably last 90 seconds and you all got worked up over it - citing words like artistic integrity.

It's not like they were chopping a whole performance. It's one scene... Ledger's gonna have a ton of them in the movie and he will have some that are on the cutting room floor. It happens to every film.

Anyway there's no need for you to panic now. Looks like the scene won't be cut if Moviehole's sources are to be correct...
A source close to the “The Dark Knight” told us this morning that the film remains in-tact – and nothing of Ledger’s will be cut from the movie, including the body-bag scene. ‘’I KNOW for a fact that that scene is in the film. I also know that WB has made no such mandate and that Chris [Nolan] is honest when saying that he will not change what was intended with The Joker.”
I hate the idea personally. I can separate films from reality just fine but I'm also human and my instinctive reaction when watching the film will be to see Heath Ledger in a bodybag and not The Joker.

If it's ...

First of all, it would seem that review of The Dark Knight from a few days ago is official. Unless of course someone is using that review to stir up some more rumor?

And it would seem the fallout from that screening or a similar test screening somewhere else in the world has lead to the news that controversial scenes involving Heath Ledger (which were shot before he died) will be cut from the film.

The following can be considered a spoiler but here's the scoop from Cinema Blend...
The scene involves Ledger’s Joker character pretending to be dead and being pictured in a body bag. Apparently the aftershocks of Ledger’s unfortunate death are such that many in the screening reacted rather badly to this moment and now execs are considering excising the scene altogether.
Which is sensible right? According to the review a few days ago the scene was pretty much inconspicuous with the rest of the feature and does not effect the plot at all, it could easily be removed without anyone ever noticing.

So why leave it in and get people uncomfortable in the cinema? We are all going to be paying far more attention to Heath Ledger's performance ...

Love these images that I stumbled across for The Dark Knight over at IESB. I'm not sure how long we will be able to keep them up for but these are completely different to any screenshots currently online for the film.

Really like the last image which I think confirms to us one or two things that we were speculating on last year.

And what about the image of Heath Ledger as a cop without the face paint? Does that signify to us that the make-up on the Joker is self-inflicted and something he wears everyday?

Less than four months to go. People should start seeing Nolan's cut very soon but we shall try and stay away from screening spoilers as much as possible.

Terry Gilliam has found his three actors who will be paying tribute to Heath Ledger who we tragically lost last month, in his final film THE IMAGNARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS. If you recall, the fantasy setup of the movie has allowed Gilliam to re-write the script so that Ledger's character could be transformed by going through a magic mirror which will change him into a similar character, with a different appearance.

That would happen a total of three times in the movie, presumably it will work similar to what happens in DR. WHO, when they change actor.

As expected, Johnny Depp has jumped aboard. He has found time to do the part just before he goes off to work with Michael Mann and opposite Christian Bale as John Dillinger and he will be working for Gilliam for the first time since FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS.

Jude Law is the second name. He has just completed his part in the sci-fi movie REPOSSESSION MAMBO and has a clean upcoming slate.

And lastly, Colin Farrell has joined the movie too. He has just done his part opposite Edward Norton in the crime/drama PRIDE AND GLORY.

Kudos to all three actors, who I'm pretty sure ...

Last week saw the removal of Heath Ledger's name and the status update on Terry Gilliam's THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS to read "The project has been shut down" leading to some rumors around the web that the movie had been scrapped altogether.

Thankfully reports today have dismissed that theory and Ledger's footage on PARNASSUS won't end up on the cutting room floor.

From Quick Stop Movies via AICN...
The source within the production wanted to make certain the word gets out that the production is not in fact shut down but is moving forward and will feature Heath Ledger in his last role. This decision to keep Heath’s performance and rework the film to accommodate it was made out of respect for that performance and in memory of Heath. This despite somewhat shady efforts by certain parties, the source tells us, to paint The Dark Knight as Heath’s final role.
Speaking from my perspective only, going ahead with the movie seems to be the most sensible thing to do when the concept and plot is so organic that it allows you the freedom of bringing in other actors to play the part, especially when I'm certain there won't be ...

Rumors galore in regards to the last performance of Heath Ledger in THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS. First we heard last week of the classy move that would bring Johnny Depp in to carry on the movie where Ledger left of as a different character (it's a magical universe so there's room to do such appearance transporting things and not lose our interest) but now that's been shot down because Depp needs time to prepare for Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES.

We heard that Ledger had around six weeks of work left on Gilliam's movie, which might only leave Depp 1 or 2 weeks to commit, if that, before he plays John Dillinger.

So then we heard that Ledger might transform into Depp but then Depp's character would change into someone else, and so on and so on... with several actors working for next to nothing in respect to Heath. Again, another classy move.

The latest development though is not encouraging. Christopher Plummer, the co-star of the movie gives us the latest...
“Terry’s throwing himself into the job of trying to salvage the picture,” said Plummer. “[Gilliam is] trying to work out at this moment how to continue on. Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, ...
