I'm not too sure of the truth behind the rumour, but Brad Pitt is reportedly in talks to play arch-nemesis Moriarty in the sequel to the ludicrous looking Guy Ritchie helmed Holmes. Script writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney (behind the forthcoming Jeff Daniels superhero buddy movie Paper Man) have been more firmly attached to the project by The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog.

I'm not usually one for rumours, but this one seems too wierd to be true surely. Pitt hasnt worked as a bona-fide villain since Kalifornia, and that character was a million miles away from the traditional evil of Moriarty- but then Ritchie isnt one for coherence and a more traditional casting choice: personally I'd go for Sir Ben Kingsley every time,- even despite his tendency to ham to the max when it comes to villains (Thunderbirds, anyone?). Or how about Tim Roth? Surely it's time he made some new waves in the business?

Stranger things have happened. Who would you like to see play Moriarty?

Warner Bros. are fighting back against the Disney/Marvel epic news of the week with the announcement in Variety that they are making a live action adaptation of Lobo, reminding us that they are the leading brand for taking risks with the darker characters of their canon. After all, this is the studio that made Watchmen and The Dark Knight - Marvel haven't as yet given us something as adult as those.

Or are they the studio to take risks? The trade says the movie will be a special effects heavy PG-13 and not the hard R rating you would think a faithful (and successful) adaptation of Lobo would need. Are we to blame Watchmen's sudden drop off in audience figures and final $185 million worldwide taking?

And then there's the news that Guy Ritchie - he of Lock Stock, Snatch, Revolver and Rock N'Rolla fame - will direct.

Don Payne who co-wrote Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and My Super Ex-Girlfriend has contributed the final draft of the screenplay. This is just getting worse with every sentence!

For those unaware, Lobo is an alien interstellar bounty hunter...
"a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands ...

The trailer for Sherlock Holmes just didn't do it for me I'm afraid, I have no idea how such a prestigious series got into the hands of Guy Ritchie but he's completely out of his depth tackling these iconic characters. I do like the casting of Robert Downey Jr though and he's a reason to see it if nothing else.

I look forward to seeing him and Jude Law challenge each other as Holmes and Watson, I like the comradery they had together in the all too brief footage. Their chemistry could make or break the movie.

I've tracked down these two one-sheet posters from Yahoo Movies which I cleverly deduced would be interesting to my dear readers...

Not a great amount of effort put into these but it's early days yet, Christmas is still seven months away. I'm sure they are still trying to come up with the best plan for marketing a Sherlock Holmes picture which they actually expect to make HUGE business from, and not just be watched by a middle aged audience on a weekday afternoon on some obscure channel.

First off, let me just say that I'm not a huge fan of Guy Ritchie. The former Mr. Ciccone has always seemed like an interesting visualist searching in vain for a project to match his style.

After seeing the new trailer for SHERLOCK HOLMES, I think he needs to search a little harder.

Check it out so we can discuss it:

I do like the BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID feel between Robert Downey Jr.'s Holmes and Jude Law's Watson. In my mind, Holmes and Watson were not on the same playing field intellectually or socially, friends but not equals. Here they seem to be played like they are brothers, and I like the chemistry between the two men.

And also like the chemistry between Rachel McAdams and that costume.

But I must say that this trailer gives off a disturbing WILD WILD WEST vibe. You know that vibe ... where a period piece is played modern. Hopefully Holmes will not find himself confronted by a giant mechanical spider at some point in this film.

I'm also not fond of what the trailer hints at about a supernatural plotline involving - yet again! - the end of the world. Sure, sometimes bad guys are going ...

When will Guy Ritchie stop having to prove that he deserves his status as one of Britain’s leading directors? Well, first of all he has to produce something so monumentally excellent that everyone forgets his involvement in SWEPT AWAY- how easy it is to forget the impact of Ritchie’s first two major films. And how easy also to forget the innovations and the fantastically accomplished stylised cinematography in some truly impressive frenetic sequences.

It pains me to say it, but ROCKNROLLA just isn’t very good. It starts with the poor plot- it’s all so diabolically Guy RitchieTM that it’s less an actual narrative than a collection of recognisable Ritchie tropes (recognisable but unfortunately not good). It seems that Ritchie recognised in the relative success of SNATCH and LOCK, STOCK… a winning formula in the complex amalgam plot style, with various strains interlocking with apparently disastrous consequences. Basically, take a good old-fashioned ensemble movie, with the familiar swollen cast of characters (perhaps caricatures is a better word for Ritchie) and lace it with explosive charges. But the difference here is that Ritchie abandons his usually admirable plot building devices in favour of shoe-horning in his usual suspects- the wildly eccentric criminal, the ...

Now there's literally hundreds of SHERLOCK HOLMES film and t.v. adaptations but I doubt any of them featured a shirtless image of super sleuth from Baker Street. And if they did, I doubt that they ever looked as good as this...

Guy Ritchie's adaptation of the character is to go back to the very origins of Arthur Conan Doyle's novels where Holmes was depicted as a more than capable martial arts fighter, a sport which Downey Jr. himself is familiar with. The purposefully released image from Warner Bros. is a message to us that this Holmes adaptation will be different to every other.

The second official image from Warner Bros. show the detective with his sidekick Dr. Watson as played by Jude Law...

Rachel McAdams (as Holmes' love interest Irene Adler), Mark Strong (as the villain Blackwood) and the always great Eddie Marsan (as Insepc. Lestrade) co-star for the Nov. 20th 2009 movie.

Matt here... welcoming OWF's newest recruit Ross Miller to the site. He is going to help me out with updating the latest movie news stories. Ya know, I need to find time to actually watch the movies I'm talking about!

Robert Downey Jr. was accidentally punched and knocked out cold by his seven foot co-star Robert Maille during the filming of SHERLOCK HOLMES reports The Sun.

The lead star playing the normally suave and gentlemen detective, was quickly revived by medics and is said to be fine.

Downey "went flying and was out cold...he didn't want to go to hospital and kept trying to get up" says a source on the set in Kent, England. Revived by medics, Downey needed stitches inside his mouth.
On the one hand it's kind of unusual to find out that on the set of a SHERLOCK HOLMES movie that the lead actor gets knocked out; but as any HOLMES historians (there's gotta' be some of them out there) will tell you... the character originally did martial arts, a special kind called Bartitsu. It looks like Ritchie has very much included that early aspect in his telling as first hinted.

Oh, and to add to the mayhem of the star ...

ROCK.

Though when Quentin Tarantino finally got his act together at Cannes some weeks later and announced that he would have his World War II epic complete in 12 months, Warner Bros. put on hold both adaptations and gave SHERLOCK HOLMES to Ritchie as it was further in development and didn't want to slug it out with Quentin.

Dark Castle producer Susan Downey updates the status of both projects to Coming Soon...
"Those two projects specifically, they still need more work in development...I know that Guy, he still has passion for them, but his focus right now is on this. I do believe that if there was a universe where he could be doing them all right now. He would want to, and we haven't jumped off him and looked for other people yet either. Here is a snap of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Holmes & Watson...

Now you can finally begin to see the "Watson" in Law, who with the tache looks to have aged about five years. And the coat makes him look heavier, if this is the early days of Holmes then this early signs of development works just fine right?

Once again Robert looks like he has just rolled out of bed.

I love how Ritchie turns up to the set in the same classic English attire as his actors.

Just Jared have snapped the first on set images of Robert Downey Jr. as the world's most famous super sleuth, SHERLOCK HOLMES, in Guy Ritchie's next movie which is currently filming out in London.

Has HOLMES ever looked so cool?

A modest Downey Jr. said...
“Clearly I’m going to do it better than it’s ever been done. The more I read about it the more overwhelmed I was by the weight of it and the amount of people who will be watching to see if it’s gotten right.”
Ritchie and Downey's version of HOLMES is expected to depict more of the physical side of Arthur Conan Doyle's smart detective, specifically his martial arts skills and ability to put up a good fight.

Presumably this also means his ability to do stunts as what seems to be the object of discussion here between Downey Jr. and his stunt man, and someone who looks like Dan Ackroyd, but obviously isn't...

Love the casting of this film... Jude Law plays Dr. Watson, Rachel McAdams is Holmes' love interest, Mark Strong is the bad guy (playing Blackwood rather than Moriarty) and the latest addition is PRIDE AND PREDUJICE actress Kelly Reilly as a love interest for Watson.

Eddie Marsan.

Our good friends at Digital Spy carry the scoop that the great British character actor who has been making it big in Hollywood lately (he was the villain in this year's major Summer tentpole HANCOCK for God's sake!) has landed a role in Guy Ritchie's soon to be filming SHERLOCK HOLMES adaptation.

Speaking exclusively to the site, Marsan revealed he would be playing Inspector Lestrade, a Scotland Yard policeman who is a trusted ally of Holmes & Watson...
"Holmes and Watson are a lot younger, bohemian. It works. Reading the script, Robert Downey Jr. is just perfect for a modern-day Holmes. Also he's a bit of totty, as well!"
Interesting. Historically, Marsan actually shares more physical resemblance with the character of Dr. Watson than Jude Law, who we actually expect to play the character in next year's film. Marsan also just happens to be exactly the stature of character actor who would usually get that role.

But still this is Guy Ritchie, no-one quite expects this new take to be conventional. Though with Mark Strong (as the main villain) and Rachel McAdams (as the female love interest) not to mention Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Eddie Marsan... you can't deny he has ...

No that's not me, unfortunately, as much as I would like to take this beauty for myself.

Rachel McAdams, at one time rumored to be Pepper Potts in IRON MAN (Gwyneth Paltrow's role) will finally get the chance to show us how much chemistry she can generate opposite Robert Downey Jr. as she has just been cast for the love interest in SHERLOCK HOLMES.

She will play the super sleuth's enigmatic love interest Irene Adler, a character who dates back to the 1891 novel "A Scandal in Bohemia", her one and only appearance though The Hollywood Reporter believe her deal here is a multi-film contract.

As we already know Mark Strong will be playing the movie's villain Blackwood and Jude Law is in talks to play the sidekick Dr. Watson. Holmes' most famous nemesis Prof. Moriarty MAY yet feature in the film as "the man behind it all" or a small cameo at the end to make way for a sequel.

Joel Silver produces, Guy Ritchie directs for Warner Bros. The new take on the character will depict Holmes' as more physically apt than ever before and less of the "stiff upper-lip" persona.

"There's no school like the old school", proclaims head mobster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) in RocknRolla, the latest piece of incoherent and pretentious garbage from Brit writer/director Guy Ritchie who after a decade in this business still feels like an insecure teenager taking up smoking so that he can look cool.

You know the kind I mean, the teenager who doesn't really like the taste but does it anyway because that's what his mates do. He wants to fit in, look cool. He buys himself a leather jacket and wears sunglasses. He watches Arnie in The Terminator and thinks it would be cool to ride a bike.

It's not cool, it makes him a fake. And Guy Ritchie to me feels like a fake. Nothing ever rings true in any of his films.

Progressing not an inch from his days on Lock, Stock and Snatch, RocknRolla harbours all the previous elements of his filmography into a mix that attempts to be funny, cool and highly stylized popcorn entertainment. Though in reality, it barely even registers on any of those low reaching levels.

Filling in for the presumably busy Jason Statham is the ever growling Scot Gerard Butler who I suggest as One, Two ...

A few weeks ago, Thursday 21st August 2008 to be precise, I voiced my absolute shock that the "confirmed" story of Mark Strong's casting in the high profile Guy Ritchie written and directed adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, hadn't hit the headlines.

Ever since Robert Downey Jr. had been cast as the super sleuth detective, I thought the news of who he would be going up against as his arch nemesis would be HUGE news. It wasn't. I don't know if it's because many sites hadn't picked up on it, or maybe it was just down to the ignorance of sites like Coming Soon who didn't want to give smaller sites credit where it was due.

[Please note I'm not talking about Obsessed With Film as that wasn't our exclusive. We just mean the original site which picked up on the story, which was Flick News, that we credited with the post].

Despite clearly Guy Ritchie confirming the story, Coming Soon gave me this response via e-mail when I told them some days later that their story that no actor had been discussed or lined up for the villain part in Sherlock Holmes was criminally false, I got this response...
Interesting Matt. I hadn't ...

I'm not attempting to bring about disrespect to fellow OWF writer James Clayton but I have to state 100% for the record (as I loathe rumors, especially those that hit the bullshit detector on red alert) that Russell Crowe is not Dr. Watson to Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's upcoming adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic literary detective character.

It simply ain't true.

Any news story that appears in The Sun and for that matter any of the absolute bullshit that is flying around for Christopher Nolan and Batman 3 should be disregarded right now because it's just fanboy gossip.

Russell Crowe will not be Watson because he is Russell Crowe. The leading man. The guy who has one of the biggest ego's in Hollywood (and with great justification) is not going to play second fiddle to Downey Jr as a bumbling sidekick.

I could have possibly seen him as Moriarty but Guy Ritchie has already found his man in Mark Strong, his frequent collaborator who has starred in his last two movies Revolver and the opening Friday in the U.K. - Rock"N"Rolla.

But what is true is that Crowe is out hunting for a movie that will fill the time before ...

A suspect report in The Sun has indicated that Russell Crowe may be the man to play Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming take on legendary literary detective Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. is already on board to play the legendary detective and according to “an insider”...
“Russell wants the part [Dr. Watson], Guy wants Russell. All they’ve got left to do is dot the i’s and cross the t’s.”

It also appears that RocknRolla director Ritchie will be taking on the material with a very modern touch by basing it on an upcoming comic book and liberally loading it with martial-arts action with Holmes and Watson becoming, in Downey Jr.’s words, “bad-asses”. The lead man is quoted as saying...

“I’ve got to spend some time with Guy and I love his take on it. We’re both martial arts enthusiasts and in the original stories of Sherlock Holmes, he’s kind of a bad-ass and a bare-knuckle boxer and studies the rare fictional martial art of baritsu. If you look baritsu up, they can’t even really tell you what it is, so it gives us a lot of leeway.”

As a man who has catapulted to golden boy status at the box-office after his star ...

I shouldn't be this excited for a Guy Rithie film because he has a seriously consistent knack for kicking me in the ass. But I can't help it, he keeps showing me good stuff.

To help feed our hunger for the movie, the opening credits designed by Graphic Artist Danny Yount have made their way online and it's really pretty cool. It also reminds us what a great cast Ritchie has put together for this one and wait until the very end when the movie actually kicks in, that's superb character actor Mark Strong - a Ritchie favourite who we heard last week would be playing the villain in his Sherlock Holmes movie.

Yout has done a similar job on previous films, some of which we have included below. I would love to see the Bond producers give this guy a go...
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
[youtube _bpP9sI72bM
The Emmy Award winning opening to Six Feet Under...

The rest are below and not Youtubed but are linked to Yout's own site, in HD quality. My favourite probably being the closing credits for this year's Iron Man.

RockNRolla opens in the U.K. a week on Friday, the end of October if your in the U.S.
