If you ever want to know what's happening with Ghostbusters III, just ask Dan Ackroyd. He is never one to shy away from telling you what's really going down with a franchise that is closest to his heart and it's comments like "at any second everything could blow up", which remind us that we've been here before with this series.

Not quite as far as getting a production team, a screenplay written (from the writers of The U.S. Office) AND importantly all the cast to agree on a return but still we've been close before. Ackroyd although optimistic about seeing the movie made this time is also a realist and knows it won't take much for it to all fall down again.

In an article from yesterday's L.A. Times, Ackroyd reveals that the potential "passing of the torch" movie could film this Winter and the actor forsees a new generation of FIVE ghostbusters with a female presence dropped in for good measure. He even decides to name drop former Charmed actress Alyssa Milano (who voiced a character in the upcoming video game) and Eliza Dushku as the two he would most like to see in the franchise.

Milano doesn't inspire me with much confidence but the ...

I've talked about Ghostbusters 3 an awful lot over the last 12 months haven't I?

I just can't help it. I feel like it's one of my babies, the franchise is something that is so personal to me, it reminds me of when they first started talking about rebooting the Batman franchise. If they can just get some key elements right, they will have a massive hit on their hands which will bring the fun time back into cinema going. I like where American comedy has been heading over the last few years. I love what Judd Apatow, Kevin Smith, and the actors they routinely use have brought to the genre. And I love the subjects they have tackled (middle aged virgins, druggies, sociopath mall cops, broke roomates who fuck just to get by).

There's a deep seeded maturity about the comedy that we are seeing and long may it continue, with Ghostbusters 3 at the forefront of this. I'm going to go out a little on a lim here and predict that in two years time, the comic book craze that has hit the U.K. and hit fashion shops will be taken over by Ghostbusters.

Anyway, so I think I'm seeing a Blu-Ray presentation ...

Rory Bruer, the President of Sony Pictures Entertainment announced at the Sony ShoWest panel this week that third portions of the Men in Black and Ghostbusters franchises were officially in development, both set to be released in 2011.

Ghostbusters 3 of course we already knew about but it's still interesting he made the announcement because it's no longer a project quietly being written by the writers of The Office which might happen if all the pieces fall into the right place, it's now a publicly announced feature with an expected release year. We expect to hear lots more announcements around the time of the video game/blu-ray release on June 6th, Ghostbusters official 25th year anniversary.

At this point we know Bill Murray seems to have agreed upon a return, as has Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd. Ernie Hudson, you can't imagine wouldn't want to be in this feature and Sigourney Weaver was interested enough to have lunch with Bill Murray around Christmas time to discuss the possibility of a new movie.

With The Office connections, one wonders whether Steve Carrell, John Krasinski, or any of the other Office workers will move into Ghostbusting, and although it's been denied... we still believe Judd Apatow is on board ...

During a recent online chat, Dan Ackroyd claimed that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 could be reving up to shoot as early as this fall...
Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009.
Said script, as well all know by now, comes from the writers of THE OFFICE and the upcoming Harold Ramis biblical comedy THE YEAR ONE.

With those GHOSTBUSTERS anniversary Blu-Ray's and that new video game coming out in June... I think everyone expects the movie to be officially announced around then.

I really hope it does begin filming this year because a GHOSTBUSTERS movie that begins shooting after 2010, just sounds odd.

Not only are we getting a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie with the original crew sounding like they are all might just be up for a return but we are also getting a cool as hell looking video game featuring the voices of Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson.

It's too bad they give a few lifeless line readings but hell, I would take this over using someone's elses voice or likeness. Can't wait to get hold of this...

The game is coming in June. Hopefully by then dare I say casting might be complete for GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

Sigourney Weaver claims she will be meeting with Bill Murray next week to discuss GHOSTBUSTERS 3, probably a chat to advise each other on whether they should be involved in the proposed movie or not.

At this point, only Harold Ramis from the original crew is officially on board (and only behind-the-scenes at that) as they are all waiting on the quality of the script The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky turn in before committing themselves.

But what of the return of another character from the original series? Someone I had previously not yet thought of. And no I don't mean the return of Louis Tully as played by Rick Moranis, no, no, no. From Sigourney herself to MTV (via /film)...
“I would hope that my little Oscar would be one of the Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it!”
Of course. Sigourney's bastard son.

That kind of possible continuity is something that Hollywood can't help themselves by putting in place. I can imagine them going with the father/son storyline if indeed Weaver's character got married to Murray's Peter Venkman who now acts as Oscar's step father?

It's been two decades since the last movie, Oscar will be a grown up man now. Perfect ...

I usually don't like taking actors comments out of context but it's pretty clear to anyone reading Seth Rogen's interview over at Collider today that he is more than just a little skeptical over a proposed GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

And without Rogen's backing, your losing a massive name because it's clear Judd Apatow and Harold Ramis were banking on him probably being at the forefront of the new generation of Ghostbusters.

“It’s hard to imagine that would be good, isn’t it?” asks Rogen. “I mean just as a movie fan I am the first guy to be skeptical of that. It sounds like a terrible idea when you first hear it. At first hearing it sounds like the worst idea ever. I dunno. Maybe. I mean, that would have to be one mutherfucking good script.”
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, two writers on The Office are writing GHOSTBUSTERS 3 right now and under tremendous pressure to deliver a movie that is appealing not just to the original GB crew but also the new actors who will take the mantle in the next movie.

Can a script that suits all parties even be possible?

Bill Murray, for possibly the first time ever, has stated that he would be interested in the newly announced GHOSTBUSTERS III movie that Columbia have recently put into development, commenting that "the wounds from GHOSTBUSTERS 2 are healed".

In the past, Murray has only ever shown a vague interest in returning to the franchise on film and at one point he would only appear in the movie if he could be a Ghost at the end! Which admittedly, is an extremely funny idea.

Murray spoke at Fantastic Fest where they were screening his upcoming fantasy film CITY OF EMBER, where he said he knew that THE OFFICE writers were taking a stab at a third film under the guidance of Judd Apatow and that his recent stint during the Summer voicing his character of Peter Venkman for the video game adaptation has given him some GHOSTBUSTERS nostalgia.

He has been signing the famous theme song whilst working down the street, apparentaly.

You can see the video from his appearance here, where the GHOSTBUSTERS talk comes at the end. Very interesting...

Great news, right? As far as I'm concerned, no GHOSTBUSTERS III reunion type movie should happen without Murray. Great to see him talking enthusiastically about ...

Harold Ramis has confirmed to Chicago Tribune's Pop Machine that Judd Apatow is officially on board as co-producer of the newly announced Ghostbusters III which will be scribed by NBC's The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

Ramis who played the scientist Egon in the two films to date, also confirms the movie is being made with the intention of having the original four cast members as "mentors" to a newer generation which will now almost certainly involve Seth Rogen (because of Apatow's involvement) and probably Paul Rudd. I think those two more than any other are shoe-ins here.

So it's official, Ghostbusters III is about to be scripted.

It's happening, just like I kept telling you guys it would.

Columbia Pictures have hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the co-executive producers on NBC's version of The Office to write an original script for the film that will have the intention of reuniting Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson for the first time since 1989's Ghostbusters II.

As well as writing the excellent U.S. version of The Office, the writing duo have also just wrote Year One, the biblical comedy which Harold Ramis himself recently helmed for Judd Apatow.

You can read the story in Variety!

Just this week Ackroyd had mentioned his desire to get Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and their gang involved in the picture in someway, something many fanboys have anticipated happening for about a year now. Could this new movie act as a farewell to the original cast and as a set-up to carrying on the franchise with Apatow's gang, which could well involve Rogen, Paul Rudd and presumably Steve Carrel, who of course just so happens to be the star of The Office.

Will Ivan Reitman, the helmer of Parts I and II and who last directed ...

So there's a totally unfounded rumor online at Dread Central that Judd Apatow has not only convinced Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson to return for a third Ghost Busters movie some twenty years after the last picture but also that they would use the film to pass the torch to Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Romany Malco.

All four actors made up the core cast of The 40 Year Old Virgin and have since starred in many various Apatow projects.

But as with every Ghost Busters rumor of the last ten years, Bill Murray seems in no mood to do another of these pictures no matter how much money they throw at him.

Why would things be so different now?

Though I would say this. If Apatow could ever convince Ackroyd, Ramis & Murray to give up the rights to the series (and if anyone could, it would be Apatow) then I'm convinced he could make a great movie with his usual crew AS LONG as he didn't got the remake route.

For example, I would rather see Rogen as a new character, rather than trying to be Bill Murray.
