A revamped 60s comedy series starring big screen mainstay Steve Carell, Dwayne "don't call me The Rock or I'll smash your face" Johnson and casting wild card Anne Hathaway. Expecting it to be a bit lame? I was.

Especially considering some of the negative buzz that surrounded it in early debates and the long-lead reviews. But I'm pleased to report that it's actually not that bad. It might be that I'm still reeling from some of the crap that's been hurled my way this summer. We've had the pitiful Baby Mama waving big names from past and present in our faces in the hope of a smile, Mike Myers talking a heck of a lot about poop and penises in The Love Guru and Eddie Murphy digging the final few spadefuls of dirt from his already incredibly deep cinematic grave in Meet Dave; so whilst I hope to convince you that this movie is amusing, do bear in mind the comedy wasteland I've faced this summer.

Some reviewers would have you believe that this movie merely hangs on to its audience through the irreverant charm of the ever popular Carrel. It's true that he manages to keep up his buffoonish lovable demeanour ...

Get Smart, a movie I have championed for over a year as potentially one of the most entertaining films of the summer is going to be something of a dissapointment if you are to believe the critics reviews.

The spoof of the classic Mel Brooks 60's t.v. show opens in the U.S. tomorrow (August - UK) and stars the spot on casting of Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, The Rock, Alan Arkin and more from the director of The Longest Yard...

Here's what those who are paid to see movies are saying...

John Anderson of Variety...
the hero was too one-dimensional, the female lead too adoring, the Cold War too over. So helmer Peter Segal's formulaic takeoff is neither fish nor fowl, not quite faithful to the show, but not quite bringing it into the 21st century either.
Kirk Honeycutt of the other big trade The Hollywood Reporter wasn't keen either...
This is a slap-dash effort whose producers threw money and stunts onscreen instead of the satirical gags and one-liners that made the old spy spoof so memorable.
Emmanuel Levy, whose extensive filmic reviews are always some of my favourites...
Despite affection for the TV show, "Get Smart" has discarded crucial elements that had defined is uniqueness, without replacing ...

You might laugh at me here but the only movie that in 36 hours (i.e. after I've seen Indy IV) that ventures anywhere near my anticipation for The Dark Knight will be the Steve Carell/the smokin' Anne Hathaway/The Rock comedy Get Smart.

It's so up my alley. Steve Carell in the last four years has propelled himself into being one of the most likeable comedic actors we have today and in a weird way, he seems to have been born to play a dumb secret agent!

No actor in a movie this Summer, with the possible exception of Bale as Batman feels more perfect that Steve Carell in this movie.

5 hilarious t.v. spots CAN BE SEEN RIGHT HERE. See The Rock walk into a wall multiple times!

Co-starring is Terrence Stamp, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews and I'm so glad they have kept the footage quiet and it hasn't leaked but Bill Murray for a cameo. I'm so thankful they didn't hore that out in the trailers!

Look for this on June 20th (U.S.) and sadly July 10th (U.K.)

This movie looks terrific.

I think I was one of the only people on the planet to be excited for Get Smart after seeing the first trailer but the whole world wide web has turned around now haven't they?

Everyone loves it and so they should!

Now Get Smart and download the second trailer in quality Quicktime from HERE.

See Terence Stamp outsmarted by Steve Carrell, The Cone of Silence, The Rock walking into a door, Alan Arkin kicking ass, Steve Carrell & Anne Hathaway running! Anne Hathaway in panties (pause at 1.35) and MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH!

From the director of Anger Management and The Longest Yard - this comedy adaptation of the original 60's Mel Brooks show opens on June 20th (U.S) and 15th August (U.K.).

Thoughts on the trailer? Does it just look like a new version of Austin Powers and if so, is that a good thing? When will you see this... opening night, a week maybe into it's theatrical run or on DVD?

We've already seen a ton of Bond parodies. I mean Hell, it only took four years after the release of the first Bond movie DR. NO back in 1962 for the blatant Bond parody OUR MAN FLINT to be spawned and surprisingly it became a huge success for it's leading man James Coburn.

Then, just one year later there was the original CASINO ROYALE with the bizarre but extremely watchable cast that included David Niven, Peter Sellers, Orson Welles, Woody Allen, Deborah Kerr and Bond's original desirable hottie Ursula Andress.

Famously in the 90's there was AUSTIN POWERS which would ignite two sequels and cement Mike Myers as a huge star, with the dual roles of both The International Man of Mystery and as the villain Dr. Evil.

Then came JOHNNY ENGLISH, the hideous 21st century British attempt at parodying Bond (which by DIE ANOTHER DAY had almost become a parody of itself) with Rowan Atkinson as the title character and Natalie Imbruglia as his sidekick.

So comes GET SMART, which isn't entirely covering new ground.

It's not officially a Bond parody as it's based on a very light-hearted and funny 60's t.v. show... but it's pretty obvious from the trailer that there are Bond ...
