Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have teased us with a Sin City 2 start date once every six months or so for the past four years, so forgive me for holding my breath at the latest scoop that claims a sequel to the black-and-white 2005 ensemble noir favourite is close to becoming a reality, because with this series it's kind of the case that i'll believe it when I see it.

Mania spoke exclusively with producer Stephen L'Heureux of Solipsist Films who claims Sin City 2 will begin production in the latter half of 2010 and interestingly it will be based on an original screenplay written by Frank Miller and won't be adapted from the currently unfilmed Sin City graphic novels such as A Dame To Kill For, which was long spoken of as the plan.
Not using A Dame To Kill For seems crazy. With Miller's
wacko creative mindset right now, can he
afford to chuck away such great material?
After the disastrous Miller written and directed movie The Spirit last year, and to be brutally honest, his less than stellar creative output in the last ten years in all mediums, maybe we should be worried by Miller writing this. He seems to have ...

We're approximately eight years into the second wave of CGI trickery. The first wave was content with touch ups and the adding of unrealistic elements. This second wave, which we could properly say began in 1999 with George Lucas' STAR WARS prequels, ushered in a new use of CGI as a way to create any kind of environment or situation. This era's creative and aesthetic peak came in SIN CITY in 2005. Director Robert Rodriguez utilized CGI to create a CALIGARI-like dream world of Impressionistic images.

I credit Rodriguez solely for this achievement, despite Frank Miller's name being attached as co-director of that film because I have seen Miller's first solo directorial effort, THE SPIRIT. An atrocity in every way, Miller has made possibly the most amateurish large-budget feature film of the year.

The film stars Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt, a police officer who is killed and then resurrected as the crime-fighting Spirit. He spends his nights prowling the city, looking for criminals and thwarting their reign of terror. High on his list of baddies is The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), an indestructible villain who relishes their little encounters.

The film is misguided from the start. The story itself, based on a ...

‘The Spirit is the story of Denny Colt, a murdered cop who is mysteriously reborn as the masked crime fighter called The Spirit. Determined to keep his beloved Central City safe, the Spirit pursues Central City’s villains from the shadows and seeks to remove the worst of them all; the megalomaniac known as the Octopus. Yet as busy as his ongoing mission keeps him, the dashing crusader always manages to make time for beautiful women, though he never quite knows if they want to seduce, love or kill him. But there is one lady who will never betray him, and to whom he will always be true: Central City, the proud old metropolis where he was born – twice.’

Thursday, December 4th, and THE SPIRIT production is on full charm offensive at a press conference in the relatively intimate Roseby Room of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Knightsbridge. On hand are some of the principal principals and free coffee, which I drank too much of… but more on that later.

The evening before, an equally select group of lucky journos, and one person who seemed to be looking for a place to have a nap, sat down at a preview screening house to ...

It was way back in May that we reported that Frank Miller was rumoured to be bringing Rogers to the big screen. Readers of a certain age (older than myself, at least!) will no doubt remember the 70's TV show. For everyone else the story, written in 1928 by Philip Nowlan, follows a U.S. military pilot who falls into a coma after being exposed to a gas and wakes up in the 25th century.

The production company behind THE SPIRIT, Odd Lot Entertainment, clearly must have their heads stuck in the sand right now. Despite Miller's directorial debut THE SPIRIT being overwhelmingly panned by critics and fans alike, they have given the green light for him to direct BUCK ROGERS.

Just incase you were still holding out a little hope that THE SPIRIT might actually be worth seeing... here are a couple more reviews from the trades.

The Hollywood Reporter says...
…truly a mess. Fans of "Sin City" and "300" will populate theaters for the film's opening, but boxoffice will fall quickly. The film's campiness might then pull in a different sort of aficionados - those who celebrate films such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for their silly acting and overripe dialogue.
Meanwhile Variety ...

Feedback from the first showings anywhere of THE SPIRIT have started to come in and boy they don't look pretty.

I believe an embargo is lifted tomorrow on a special Frank Miller event we attended earlier this month and it's my intention to get in touch with Mark Clark right now to see what the status update is. But right now, he's some of the early negative feedback from the festive release...

El Gringo to AICN...
the spirit could pass for ambitious (but it isn't), and it lacks a lot of emotional commitment. i found it not so fun to watch, and quite painful to sit through. the lead character, even though bravely supported by actor gabriel macht, is so stupid it's jaw-dropping (wait to see him get confused by evidence that would get a 5-year old to close the case). he's absolutely unfathomable as a character, driven by nothing, attached to no-one but his so-called mother (a.k.a. his city).

speaking of which: the film was supposed to be about a city. i mean: it's on the poster, it's in the trailers and in the tagline ("my city screams"). well, never has a city resembled so much an empty sound stage - except maybe ...

Frank Miller is in the U.K. promoting THE SPIRIT and during the same junket OWF attended (which we can't talk about yet), IGN Movies got out of Miller that he is hoping SIN CITY 2 will film in April.

He tells the site the script is written and if all the pieces come together he will be filming the movie in a similar circumstance as the original, with the help of his pal and filmmaking mentor Robert Rodriguez.

In September, Miller voiced similar sentiments about a return to SIN CITY.

Back in December 2006, Miller cast Angelina Jolie for one of the main roles in A DAME TO KILL FOR, the major unused story from Miller's original graphic novels which is seen as a shoe-in for the sequel. When she got pregnant and other pieces never came together for the movie, it was delayed.

Hopefully Miller will give her a call again. Could you imagine anyone else being better suited to the title?

Previously, SIN CITY 2 and 3 were to shoot back-to-back. Hopefully once THE SPIRIT is out of the way we can here more about exactly what's going down.

Frank Miller tells us in a newly released featurette that his upcoming Christmas film release is not a tribute to Will Eisner, his mentor in the comic book industry for 25 years and creator of the DC Comics Character upon his directorial debut is based on, but is instead a tribute to THE SPIRIT.

Which to me sounds like his excuse for why the movie is in actual fact, a glorification of MILLER'S own interpretation of the character because no-one has ever depicted this often slightly goofy hero in this way.

Never in this spirit.

Not even in the adult adaptations of the character has anything been as radical as this.

I once heard the movie described as a "Wild E. Coyote" cartoon with live action actors playing against green screen.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to see what they mean.

Another new trailer to showcase for you today, this time it's from Frank Miller's directorial debut, THE SPIRIT, which is still struggling to look like a legitimate movie for me.

It still feels unfinished. There's a moment here where Samuel L. Jackson shouts out "Your not making this easy" which sums up the whole thing for me. It looks like an actor on a green screen, with his dialogue and movements feeling forced rather than natural, probably because of the working environment.

That moment's at 1:20ish.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER IN HD

I'm starting to take a liking to the score and I will admit that the movie looks really cool and interesting at some points but there's an extremely cartoony feel to it which I can't get away with. Sure SIN CITY had that aspect to but I think it's heightened to another level here.

Is this the new SIN CITY or is it more like the new SPEED RACER?

And is Eva Mendes taking off a towel enough to convince you to see this when it opens at Christmas?

OWC (Obsessed With Comics) is a new regular feature from David Valjalo (aka V), our resident comic book expert who will advising us on the best, the worst and the most bizarre in the world of the "funny books".

Kicking off the new column is his look at the All Star line of DC Comics and as a fairly semi-regular comic reader myself (I basically read just Batman, Superman and the occasional title that peaks my interest), I can say that these titles are extremely addictive.

And if you wanna see why Frank Miller is a dangerous entity to characters he didn't create right now, just read the early issues of what he did with "The God Damned Batman".
All-Star Batman and Robin: The Boy Wonder (Volume One available now, issues ongoing)

Frank Miller and Jim Lee’s run on the All-Star branded DC comics line has been controversial for two reasons: one is the deadline delirium that has plagued the title from the off, the other is that it’s… different. Different in the way The Dark Knight Strikes Again was different, but with less consistency and more shallowness. It’s easy to dismiss the title as a wash-out and a cash-in and it’s quite ...

At one time we use to get a lot of press releases concerning this film and a lot of fanboy's wanting to know how the movie was going to turn out, with words of genuine excitement and anticipation bursting out from each sentence.

That's simply not the case anymore and it hasn't been since around the Con when we got some real good glimpses of how this movie is going to turn out. UGO have released two new posters from the movie today...

Some more Frank Miller news comes from the guys at BadTaste who say that in a Q & A session, Miller told the world that he and Robert Rodriguez are "close" on beginning work on SIN CITY 2.
I can't talk about my projects, because I don't believe a movie is real until I see the title on the screen. There are many things that can go wrong. But I can tell you that I'm very close to begin 'Sin City 2' with Robert Rodriguez. We have to arrange a few things and we'll be back in action.

Matt here…

Unsurprisingly 20th Century Fox and Marvel are mulling over a revival of Daredevil, the character that they thought would easily join the high ranks of Spider-Man and X-Men as a third big "comic book to film money maker" back in 2003 but when they hired the wrong director (Mark Steven Johnson), it barely crossed the $100 million mark domestically (it was made for $78 million) and was more disliked than loved.

Though I will forever contend that Johnson's director's cut makes for at least an interesting watch. I would say he got more of the character right than wrong, and it wasn't so terrible like Ang Lee's Hulk or his own later mis-fire of Ghost Rider that a reboot is needed.

I still think the way to go is to put Ben Affleck back in the suit (as he made a good Matt Murdock, and he is older and wiser a performer now) and give Kevin Smith the reigns on it. I know those guys could save this franchise. It doesn't have to be a reboot, just make a sequel that stands-alone.

Talk of a Daredevil revamp has been on the agenda recently after the sometimes insane Frank Miller suggested he ...

I always thought Daredevil was the one that really got away from Marvel. Here's a superhero, not to disimilar to Batman, who fights justice because of a childhood incident - but actually maybe goes one further than Batman by studying and putting away criminals behind bars with his work as a lawyer by day.

Matt Murdock never rests.

They got a terrific actor to play him in Ben Affleck five years ago but sadly they didn't choose the right director, though I'm of the opinion that Mark Steven Johnson's director's cut of the film was not without it's merits.

I can't believe at this point that Kevin Smith hasn't pitched for a sequel. Having wrote the character for the comic books, played a cameo in the original film and of course being tight friends with Affleck - I'm so surprised they haven't got this character back on the big screen where he deserves.

Maybe it's something they have in the pipeline for the future but by the sounds of things they are going to have to be quick. Fans at the Comic Con at the end of last month might have given Frank Miller the idea to reinvent the character himself, something he did ...

Ah, Mr. Frank Miller - I didn't realise your solo directing debut was actually for a commercial. Good job on the weird psychedelic images, the "beer commercial" music and the over the top short story of a guy who is attracted to all kinds of women.

Is this a commercial for The Spirit, a new kind of deodorant?

Because this can't be a trailer for a movie, can it?

That is just bizarre.
If you are at all a fan of Will Eisner's original incarnation of The Spirit universe then it's officially time to get pissed at this. As has happened so many times in Frank Miller's writing career in comics, his own desire for promoting his own voice through other people's material has resulted in an absolute mess which does nothing but appease Miller's weird artistic taste.

Is this really the movie you have been itching to make as your long awaited solo film directing debut?

Everything seems awkward, the backgrounds are horrible... it's so fucking boring. Nothing is going on, what is Denny Colt's motivations here? He is suppose to be a detective coming back from the dead to fight crime in the shadows, not some kind of porn star who is trying to ...

Frank Miller does tend to get excited when his comic book properties are made into kick ass movies. We know he is planning to write brand new Sin City stories for future collaborations with Robert Rodriguez and now comes word from the producers behind the 2007 CGI heavy 300, that Miller is writing a another comic story set in the universe.

The plan is to adapt the prequel or sequel tale once Miller has published it.

Collider got the scoop out at the Saturn Awards on Tuesday Night.

Also planned is a Blu-Ray release of the original 300 (which I would expect to be one of the most gorgeous so far released).

Another interesting scoop the site got from the event was a juicy story of a new movie titled War of the Gods, a 300 esque CGI film from the visually stunning helmer Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall). It will start filming in the first quarter of next year and will be another Greek movie.

A slightly different image to the one that we were granted with a while back for The Spirit. This one graces the front cover of the San Diego Official Comic-Con Mag and you may think it's early advertising but remember, the film is now hitting this year.

Christmas time to be precise, to match the snow...

I've actually just watched Jackie Brown for the fourth time tonight and it got me thinking about Jackson and how so much more exciting an actor he was in the mid to late 90's. So hungry for his work, relishing almost every role with a tremendous screen presence which matched up to any of the big stars that Hollywood had to offer.

Don't get me wrong, he's still very much capable these days. Coach Carter, Black Snake Moan and Resurrecting the Champ (all notably smaller works) show he can still carry a movie but for the big Hollywood productions - he doesn't seem as interested. The Star Wars prequels notably being phoned in performances but he's an actor that I'm sure Frank Miller took to in a heartbeat.

And we only need to watch Unbreakable to see how well he can play a great comic book villain.

IGN report that Nu Image/Millenium Films are set to resurrect the long dead Buck Rogers franchise. They have greenlit a new movie which is similar to their recent dealings on a new Conan feature.

Early reports said that Frank Miller would be directing but since then the site have been informed that no firm director choice has been made just yet for the film that has been set a $40 million budget.

It's said the film will be similar to the new Doctor Who series in that it will keep the cheapness atmosphere of the low-budget special effects and that it will very much keep the tone of the original 1980's series.
As originally conceived by Nowlan, Buck Rogers was a U.S. military pilot who falls into a coma after being exposed to a gas and wakes up in the 25th century. Later as a comic strip character, Buck -- along with allies Wilma Deering and Dr. Huer -- fought cosmic villains such as the Mongols, Killer Kane and Ardala. Buck was updated to be an astronaut for the 1980s TV series.
I use to love Buck Rogers and I think the movie industry has kinda been waiting for this news after so many ...

Lionsgate have bumped up the adaptation of Will Eisner's classic character The Spirit a few weeks from mid January 2009 to a Christmas Day 2008 release, a tentpole which was once held by Paramount and it's Star Trek reboot.

No reason has been given for the change but Variety claim it was made some weeks back when talking to fans at the NY Comic Con.

There's no doubt a Christmas release is stronger than January - usually the slow month of the year. However it will now face stiff competition from two comedies from proven box office stars.... Adam Sander's disney comedy Bedtime Stories (which is being setup as the next Night at the Museum) and Owen Wilson/Jennifer Aniston's rom-com Marley & Me.

AICN also speculate that Lionsgate wanted to distance this comic book adaptation from Watchmen, another hard edged and adult comic adaptation.

Seven years ago it was Frank Miller who made a deal with Warner Bros. for his 1990 comic series Hard Boiled to be made into a feature film with Nicolas Cage set to star and David Fincher to direct.

But a lot has happened since 2001, one of them being that film was never made. The situation has clearly changed now, Frank Miller has a very successful co-directed adaptation of one of his works with Sin City in the bag and in less than a year's time we will see his solo debut The Spirit open in cineplexes worldwide.

We've heard since 300 was released last year that Miller is not willing again to give up any of his properties for other directors to helm, choosing to adapt them himself if and when he is ready. Looks like things are no different for Hard Boiled.

He said this to MTV...
“We’re talking about [it]...I’ve got a really unusual way I want to do it.”

“I’m in love with directing...I’ve found a way to expand my career. Comics and directing are really two sides of the same coin. That’s what Robert Rodriguez taught me…good drama is good drama.”

You know, I really wish they would call this Frank Miller's The Spirit.

Although he doesn't own the character like he does his Sin City universe, he does own a certain depiction of other creators superheros such as Daredevil and Batman. His runs on both comics are legendary and actually when I read Daredevil, it's always his run that I compare whomever I am reading too.

I don't mind that he has changed the character completely to suit his hallmarks - he's been doing it for decades now. Which is why he should promote this as being his version of the character. This film clearly will have little to do with Will Eisner, only slightly resemblance in a minuscule of tone.

The trailer plays very much like an unofficial sequel to Sin City. He was very close to the making of the Sin City movie and now he gets to play with the toys that Robert Rodriguez showed him. The movie is bound to be clunky but what he makes up for directorial naivety won't be lost in cool visuals or narrative storytelling...

Venturing very close to a Microsoft Windows 98 style word art but still, it's a pretty neat teaser poster for Frank Miller's debut solo movie The Spirit which once again has a very heavy Sin City feel about it.

You can just imagine the camera swopping up from below with a beating score and straight into the face of a windswept Gabriel Macht who in a gritty voice-over tells us how the women in his life are causing him trouble.

New York Comic Con is merely hours away. We have been promised the first trailer, just how excited for it are you?
