Joel Silver is still banging the drum, trying to make a Sgt. Rock movie work after over 20 years of trying.

And I hate to piss on his cornflakes this morning but this attempt won't be successful either.
The Hollywood Reporter say that Silver is planning to take the character into the future!!!, the kind of move that would usually only happen after two movies when you realise there is no where else to go with the franchise once World War II has ended.
Maybe after so many years of trying, Silver feels like he's seen a Sgt. Rock WWII movie already a thousand times by the amount of unproduced screenplays he has read and he's bored himself of this saga. Aren't we all?

Classic DC comic writers knew the character had no where to
go after the war ended, classically killing him off
with the last bullet of the WW-II conflict.
Silver has hired Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine), a current WB "go to guy" when a blockbuster job needs filling, to direct. Previously Silver hoped Guy Ritchie would helm, but he's taken the director to make Lobo instead.

Mark Protosevich and Francis Lawrence, the writing and directing team behind Warner Bros. adaptation of I Am Legend, a novel about the last man on Earth are set to go one better at 20th Century Fox.

They are making a movie about the Earth if man were suddenly wiped out, not even leaving vampires behind, though we expect a Will Smith lead or a bunch of characters to be present as our protagonists. Otherwise it would be a pretty boring movie, or a documentary and this is neither.

The studio have bought the rights to journalist Alan Wiesman's non-fiction ecology novel The World Without Us, which depicted the future history of Earth if all of mankind was gone tomorrow. Fox have the idea of turning it into a 2 hour Hollywood feature.. ala The Day After Tomorrow.

The Hollywood Reporter say...
The book explored how edifices and houses would deteriorate, how long and which man-made objects would linger and last, the environmental impact nuclear waste and other pollutants would have left unchecked and how nature would spread over built environments.

According to wiki...
Weisman concludes that residential neighborhoods would become forests within 500 years, and that radioactive waste, bronze statues, plastics, and Mount Rushmore would be among the longest lasting evidence of human ...

Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND, CONSTANTINE) has setup his Delta Force prison action thriller project at Warner Bros.

Produced by BLACK HAWK DOWN author Mark Bowden who while researching that novel, came fascinated by the true story of the riots and siege of Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in 1987.

Cuban and American prisoners seized control of the maximum security facility and took more than 100 federal prison staff members hostage. The situation was so extreme that the FBI's hostage rescue team was ill-equipped to handle the riots, and Delta Force, the Special Forces detachment, was called in to retake the prison.
Bowden took the story to Wild Eyes, who then took it to WB, who hired Ari Rubin (WAR MAGICIAN) to scribe the screenplay.

Michael De Luca, former President of New Line Cinema is also producing according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lawrence is also expected to begin work on I AM LEGEND 2 before the end of the decade.

Variety have today confirmed what director Francis Lawrence told us back in July, that an I AM LEGEND prequel is in development over at Warner Bros. and that both he and star Will Smith are expected to return for a second outing.

The studio have hired D.B. Weiss (currently adapting Neil Strauss' pick-up novel THE GAME) to come up with a screenplay based on a blueprint set out by Lawrence, Smith and the first movie's writer Akiva Goldsman and producer James Lassiter.

The movie will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York as a deadly plague begins spreading across the world which as we know, eventually leave Smith to survive for three years as "the last man alive".

It's truly a case of LOGICAL STORY DEVELOPMENT (not that there should be a sequel, I just mean if there is... it should go forward like 28 WEEKS LATER did) being sacrificed for the sake of bringing back it's lead mega-star.

The weekend after I Am Legend opened to $77 million domestic for Warner Bros., we all knew a further continuation of this series was inevitable. The movie was Will Smith's highest opening of all time and was liked by critics and audiences a like, with his performance singled out for huge praise.

Those combinations usually = sequel.

Though, not quite in this case as bringing back Will Smith for the logical continuation of the story (a.k.a 28 Weeks Later) can't quite be done. So the only way to get Smith back is to sacrifice the forward momentum of the series and go the PREQUEL route.

Which was yesterday confirmed by director Francis Lawrence at the Con...
"Yes, yes, absolutely, we're actually trying to crack that. We're trying to figure out some ideas for it, but yes, it would be a prequel."

"In the prequel, it's slightly different because it's earlier. We were three years later so we did a lot of research into the way nature would have sort of overtaken the city, with the cracks in the streets and the weeds, so if it's just back earlier, it'll be slightly different so the approach will be different. We're not positive of the time of ...

Not long after Chris Evans (aka The Human Torch) revealed that he was ready to walk away from the Fantastic Four franchise, Keanu Reeves is shouting out the same sentiments about the comic book character he portrays.

Hellblazer, the longest running series in Vertigo's history spanning over 200 issues (it's not called that in the movies because of it's similarity to Hellboy - go figure!) was translated into a pretty lame CGI filled confused movie, which only carried a cent of the power of the original comic. And sadly, that might be all we see for a while.

IESB say they have interviewed Reeves who says he is not interested in doing another Constantine and nor does he wish to return to any of his past characters for future sequels, which also debunks a half rumor of 2007 which had him lined up to shoot a Point Break 2 (not that Swayze is in any condition for that right now).

For the last two years we have heard that WB have tried to push director Francis Lawrence into a sequel to the $230 million worldwide hit but so far it's all been that, just talk.
Discuss: Do you want to see Keanu Reeves take ...

I love Richard Matheson's I Am Legend novel. Matheson is one of my favourite sci-fi writers and with his most famous tale he brought together such a clever plot, a great lead character and such open-ended themes and ideas that it's impossible for the book not to remain with you for months after you've read the last sentence.

He has a great ending in the book. Very dark, very shocking and one without hope for mankind and human nature. I mean essentially that's the book is about, hope in a hopeless situation and what happens to us when that hope slowly drifts away day after day.

All previous adaptations of I Am Legend, including the Charlton Heston 70's version have come a little unstuck with how to end the tale of the last man on Earth. For some reason, I'm continually baffled as to why they don't use the powerful ending from the novel and although I do like how dark both The Omega Man and the Francis Lawrence film ended, I still they were rushed and uncomplicated endings when they didn't know how to finish the picture.

So we've heard for a while now about the alternative ending which was originally set ...

Review by Matt Holmes

[rating: 3.5]

Out of the three adaptations of Richard Matheson's truly amazing tale of the last man on Earth who survives only on routine and habit in a world where vampires rule the night, this Will Smith blockbuster action vehicle is by far my favourite.

I Am Legend is better than The Last Man On Earth. It's leaps and boundaries better than Charlton Heston's The Omega Man. And for 2/3rd's of the movie, it is the best psychological dramatic horror flick of the year. If such a genre exists.

It's still not a patch on the original novel and it's far from a 5 star movie. There's plenty of problems that will niggle and gnaw at you but it's dark and sombre tone makes this a fascinating Christmas release and a tour-de-force performance from a single leading man, very reminiscent of Tom Hanks' Oscar nominated performance in Cast Away.

It's rare the Academy ...
