ME: Was The Good The Bad The Weird as fun to make as it was to watch?
It was really fun because this was my first villain role. In fact I asked him to do this, I had two contracts starting at the same time but I chose this because it looked so great.
ME: What was the most fun thing you did when shooting THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD?
Some of the most fun bits are in the deleted scenes. I had two facial expressions I really liked because each time I was given a reaction shot we did several takes and I always suggested to him [Mr Kim] that I do the last one just however I wanted to and that was always my favourite and was the most fun because I could just put myself in the situation and react to how it felt. And what came out of it made myself and the director happy, which was great fun. Although, as I said, unfortunately some have been deleted.
ME: How about re-enacting some for me now?
(Laughs) I think that'd be pretty hard.
ME: It has been unusual for you to play such dark and unsympathetic roles...
Yeah, I've never done it ...

SAW V opens Friday, once again attempting to scare us the week before Halloween. Obsessed With Film were delighted this week to have the chance to talk to Tobin Bell, the real star of the franchise...

Interview by Oliver Pfeiffer...

Contrary to popular belief Tobin Bell doesn’t speak in a muffled, gravely voice in person. He even has a general distain for most horror films. An ordinary looking character actor Bell spent most of his career in bit player parts in films as diverse as TOOTSIE (as an uncredited waiter), GOODFELLAS and THE FIRM and fleeting television appearances in everything form Nash Bridges, The X-Files, E.R. and 24.

But it was these unassuming fade-in-to-the-background looks which made him an inspirational choice for the surprise ‘man with the self- inflicted torture plan’ in the SAW series, as John Kramer (aka ‘Jigsaw’), a role that he will probably be best remembered. During a conference call with the reluctantly pegged ‘horror icon’ I took the opportunity to quiz the actor on his fearsome but faithful contribution to the continual series, any sneaking developments we may except to look out for in SAW V and whether he would one day be interested in directing his own installment ...

Costas Mandylor, an experienced character actor who has worked with the likes of Jack Nicholson and directors Sean Penn and Oliver Stone in his time, returns as supporting character Mark Hoffman, who had a small role in SAW III and IV but now continues his escapades in the fourth sequel in a more fleshed out and intricate role.

As well as talking to Tobin Bell, OWF's Oliver Pfeiffer was surprised and elated to have the opportunity to talk to Costas about this Friday's release SAW V and his career as a whole.

Your character like Tobin’s started off as a small role and then evolved in subsequent sequels. Did you have any idea your character would develop in this way?
People would hint to me that there was a possibility that this character could evolve but nothing to such a major extent that it did…and then suddenly this character is alive and becomes central.
Did you feel any fierce responsibility to essentially ‘carry the torch’ of John Kramer?
Yeah I felt a responsibility to carry the torch and to convey the true heart of this guy and to stay true to John’s character. Yeah it was a big responsibility to get it right.

What was it ...

I believe this is an OWF exclusive, at least I have been unable to see this story picked up anywhere else. Though I do have a feeling some outlets are waiting for some more details before writing up the story.

From our most trusted and so far 100% accurate source comes the news that Austin Grossman's popular superhero novel SOON I WILL BE INVINCIBLE has been picked up by an unknown studio for a film adaptation.

D.B. Weiss, the hot screenwriter recently hired by Warner Bros. to adapt the I AM LEGEND prequel is on board to scribe.

The novel (note, not Graphic Novel) was published in 2007 and carries this synopsis through Wiki...
The novel is told through two alternating first person narratives of the characters Dr. Impossible and Fatale. Dr. Impossible is a self-proclaimed supervillain of the mad genius variety, who suffers from "Malign Hypercognition Disorder" ("evil genius" syndrome). Fatale is a female cyborg and the novel begins with her called up to join the superhero group The Champions, a Justice League of America/Avengers-style team in the wake of the disappearance of the superhero CoreFire.
I have seen the book in my local book store self several times but have never cared to ...

A few days ago I was asked by this site's co-owner - a friend from school - if I'd like to go to TIFF (the Toronto International Film Festival, duh) and interview Rian Johnson, director of 2006's Brick and The Brothers Bloom, which is likely to hit UK cinemas in early 2009.

I told him I would of course be honoured, especially as it meant a free ticket to the film!

Unfortunately, the video camera that I was lead to believe would be present was not and the interview, presumably, was to be audio only and a high-flying member of the national media such as myself of course had a dictaphone with him. Sadly not. So what was intended by the site to be a video interview, and by the studio to be a transcribed audio interview is here turned into good old-fashioned prose, like in the olden days before recordings, and writing (I decided that I would look pretty stupid if I suddenly began scribbling frantically and revealed that I was even more clueless than I had let on and that I had not thought to bring along a recording device, surely a journalist's most basic piece of kit). The interview ...

Well how do you top interviewing Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley on the same day?

Mike Edwards had the answer... an exclusive video interview with Mary Elizabeth Winstead!

She cheated death in Final Destination 3 (where my personal obsession with this girl began) but didn't have the same luck in the remake of Black Christmas

She made geeks purr as a cheerleader in Death Proof and we should not forget she is of course the daughter of John McClane in Live Free or Die Hard. That alone is a statement of some stature for any actress.

She is simply put, an OWF favourite. And she sat down to talk to Obsessed With Film about her latest movie Make It Happen - a Flashdance esque dance drama which to me looks like a stand out compared to the recent crap that are How She Move and Step Up 2 The Streets.

I enjoyed the trailer and she totally sells this movie for me. Hear her talk about the movie, the sexiness, her favourite movie director she would want to work with and yes... Tron & Gremlins!

That movie with Edgar Wright is of course Scot Pilgrim vs. The World, the adaptation of the Oni Press Graphic Novel ...

Matt here.... this is certainly not an interview Mike had with the coolest cat we've ever spoken to hear at OWF, the up and coming director Jonathan Levine.

This is two guys just hanging out and throwing around filmic references to each other. I love directors who are quite happy to talk like the true geeks they are and let their movies do most of the work. I have a Blu-Ray copy of ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE which I'm gonna watch in about 5 mins and I can't wait.

Take it away Mike...

With the forthcoming DVD release of ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE and THE WACKNESS poised to hit UK cinemas, Jonathan Levine has decided to hang around PR haunts and see who accosts him. Luckily he paid heed to my accost and we had the following chat:

ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE was feature debut as director, did you feel a lot of pressure going into it or were you just there to have fun?
Most of the pressure was kind of self-imposed, I just wanted to do a really good job because I just wanted to have the opportunity to make another movie and another movie. But I ...

Talk about British Horror movies of the 1960s and early 70s and one word usually springs to mind – Hammer. With films like Prince of Darkness (1968) and The Devil Rides Out (1968), the studio was responsible for some of the finest gothic melodramas of the period. Their films billowed eroticism and bled danger.

But all the while other studios lurked in Hammer’s mighty shadow.

There was Amicus, the studio that specialised in anthology horror films like Dr Terror’s House of Horrors (1964), and Tigon, the producers of Matthew Hopkins: Witchfinder General (1968).

Many of these films were derivative of Hammer’s unique style, but some of them – some of them were classics.

This year’s Fantastic Films Weekend in Bradford showcased several such movies, most notably Peter Duffell’s The House that Dripped Blood (Amicus) and Piers Haggard’s Blood on Satan’s Claw (from Tigon), both from 1971.

To add to the sense of occasion, Duffell and Haggard were on hand to discuss their work. Outside of their scheduled talks, the two directors happily chatted with fans, signed autographs and attended screenings. They are gentleman from the old school: smartly dressed, intelligent, and gracious to a flaw.

Duffell’s kind face is wrinkled and grandfatherly, while Haggard is ...

Here's our second part of our exclusive interviews with main players behind The Edge of Love, a nice dramatic departure in the U.K. from the sea of summer blockbusters.

This time Mike got to speak too Keira Knightley (I know, Sienna Miller & Knightley in the same day!!) and Matthew Rhys...

Matthew, how daunting was it playing so important a fellow countryman?
MR: It was very daunting because I'd grown up with him as a part of my education and upbringing. It's very strange because every Welshman and his dog think they know him but then someone would say "Well he's got a Welsh accent hasn't he?" and it's like "No! He tried to get rid of it." So everyone had this preconceived idea of how he looked and sounded and that made me a little bit nervous.
KK: He's famous for his very BBC English isn't he? That very round, sort of tone.
Kiera, what was your first reaction on reading your mother's script? And did you sort of think "I want that character"?
KK: She gave it to me when I was working on THE JACKET when I was eighteen and I can't even remember why because she'd never done it before! But I ...

The Edge of Love opens in the U.K. tomorrow and the word is it's far more than an Atonement knock-off, a topic that director John Maybury mentions in our exclusive interview below.

He was speaking alongside the gorgeous Sienna Miller to OWF's very own Michael Edwards...

Sienna, we know you joined the cast at pretty short notice. How much time did you have to prepare for the role?
SM: Two weeks.
So it was a shock when the call came then?
SM: Well no, I mean we've been friends for years and I knew all about the project anyway. And I'd heard that there were maybe a few problems so I'd had an inkling.
JM: I actually called Sienna to get Lindsey Lohan's phone number, I'd talked to her via email and not get a response so I said "Have you got Lindsay's number" but it was also like "Just stay out of the sun!"
SM: But two weeks is really not enough, I'm normally a bit of a boff and it's especially important because she's a real person. So it was really two weeks of sleepless nights or waking up in cold sweats! In a way though I think it kind of served the character because ...

The famous British 'nice guy' - who is probably best known as Jonny from Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps or Anthony (a.k.a. the son) on the Royale Family - chews the fat about Gremlins, Tron, his new film... and cheese.

I'm just going to come straight into this interview with the question I really want to ask you: if I ever get the budget sorted to make a GREMLINS 3 would you be in it as a hapless builder?
Oh yeah, yeah definitely! I'm all for GREMLINS 3!
GREMLINS is probably the best films ever right?
GREMLINS is, but GREMLINS 2 was not that great though was it?
You don't think GREMLINS 2 was great??
I don't know. I did at the time but I saw it again recently and just thought "hmmm, that's not really as good as I remember it being", it just seemed a bit like a cheap comedy. (Laughs) But not the first one though, that's great.
But the second has loads of cool different Gremlins!

Michael Edwards hunts down Morgan Spurlock to talk about why he makes documentaries, his political views and insuring his moustache...

How did you get into making documentaries?
That's a good question, I made docs in college and even after college I made some short films for some record companies about their artists, you know, low-profile doc pieces, but I'd never considered making a feature-length doc until SUPER SIZE ME and even then I wasn't planning on it. Just before I had a show that just got cancelled on MTV called I BET YOU WERE and we had about fifty grand in the bank, I'd written a play a few years earlier that I'd adapted into a screenplay called THE PHOENIX that had won an award in New York City so that was what we were going to make. But then watching all the plays that had been converted into movies and they really felt like plays that were made into movies. None of them felt fresh or different. So I thought I'd come up with some new idea, something else, and it was then that I got the idea for SUPER SIZE ME and it just felt right.
So was it more like ...

This was your directorial debut, how'd you find it?
I found it thrilling and exciting and I'd do it all over again.
From your history with Alexandre Aja I was expecting something more like a slasher, what made you go all psychological?
That's what I like, you know? I think the monster within is a lot scarier than ghosts and a lot scarier than slasher movies. I think we've been desensitized to a lot of these horrors, I mean it's gruesome to look at but we really know it's fake. There's something mysterious about a psychologically twisted person because it could be the neighbour next door who seems really nice but actually he's a crazy killer, and I think that's really scary. One of the big arguments I had with my producers was whether we made the lead character sort of a monster so it's beauty and the beast, but I thought it'd be more interesting if he was a normal guy, the kind of guy a girl might find attractive to begin with so the situation is a bit more complicated.
Did you do a lot of work with Wes Bentley to get that?
No. You know the way the character was written there ...

Before I start, loyal readers, let me just announce to those of you who watched my Kit Ryan interview that this happened before it and will thus not contain a GREMLINS reference. I did, however, interview Franck Khalfoun soon after and that will be up soon for you to peruse to see if I rose to the challenge...

Here, however, we can enjoy a candid chat with a man deep in the bowels of Hollywood's gore machine - Alexandra Aja!

How's work going on PIRANHA?
The script is almost finished now and hopefully we'll be shooting after we finish with MIRROR in December.
I've read a lot of fanboy comments recently that're concerned that you're doing a lot of remakes- is that a direction you've actively chosen?
This is like my worst nightmare that you're expressing, I don't want to be the remake person because it's really not me. I made HIGH TENSION [SWITCHBLADE ROMANCE] was like an original story, then I accepted and I did THE HILSS HAVE EYES which was a real remake with the same story, same character and we just added the new background, but then we went to P2 and that is a completely original story. Now MIRRORS is NOT ...

Bizarre comedy horror BOTCHED is out in the UK on Friday 18th of April (Review here) and we decided we wanted in on the action, but not through an ordinary interview my friends. We've gone nuclear and decided to beam out the chat to all you lovely folks, and in the true OWF spirit of saying what we think Michael Edwards was sent in to have a chinwag with Kit totally unprepared, and completely forbidden to edit the footage to hide his idiocy. So put down your reading glasses and enjoy!

A legend of British filmmaking and a man notorious for not mincing his words, us lovely folk at OWF have had our go at taming this wild beast of the cinematic Serengeti and you can have the pleasure of reading the results below. His answers are detailed, deliberate and often very overt in his distaste for the journalistic profession and thus I squirmed for a very long time in providing this little treat for you guys, that's how much I love you! Enjoy.

Are you surprised by people's reactions to the film?
Well, you know, I've made a lot of films and there's always some quirky reactions that are surprising because they're so off the.... But on the whole the truth is that the reaction to the film is not that surprising because people are reacting to what they properly should.
From your point of view, can you see a fine line between someone being very happy and someone being annoying?
I don't even... I've no concept of the relationship between... The thing is I don't know what that discussion is about in relation to the film, I have no conception of annoying in relation to Poppy, I can't see what's annoying about her ...

Son of Rambow has now been released in the UK and we thought it was time for you to get some behind the scenes gossip. So sit back and enjoy scrolling through child stars Bill Milner and Will Poulter dishing the dirt on director Garth Jennings, Garth praising the kids and Garth Jennings talking candidly about the state of the British film industry.

Garth, how did you find these two guys? Mr. Poulter has the cheekiest grin I've ever seen.

GJ: He's evil, he's actually evil... It took five months actually, it took ages. And it's not because we couldn't find anyone because we found some really good actors at that stage but they weren't exactly what we had in our heads. And then these two came along right at the end of that process and they were both exactly right for the parts and if people like the film I think it's actually because they like these two. You can do all the best writing in the world but it's very hard to find people of that age with their confidence. It was one of the most instant, easy-peasy decisions when they walked in... they could be a pain sometime but... ...

With the recent release of Son of Rambow, the much hyped new British comedy-drama-esque movie set in the 80's, we thought it might be nice for our lovely readers to have a peek behind the scenes. Then we thought it'd be much better if we went further than that and gave them a peek inside the heads of some of the cast and crew! So, first up it's Jessica Hynes - who has a bit of a love-fest over the film, as well as indulging in some nostalgia and divulging a little about her future prospects...

What did you think when you saw the script for the first time?
I thought it was fantastic, I really wanted to do it. It was original and I could see what they wanted to do and, you know, from that to this is incredible - they surpassed what I imagined. I feel lucky to be part of it, it's one of the best films I've seen in a long time and certainly one of the best British films. When I saw the cast and crew attached I just thought 'It's a classic!'
What research did you have to do to play a character in the Plymouth ...

Michael Edwards talks to John DiMaggio...

With the forthcoming release of Futurama: Bender's Big Score, we've been lucky enough to have the voice of Bender himself, John DiMaggio, pop over for a chat about the show, voiceovers, cartoon hotties, and Al Gore. I should warn you however, this interview contains transcriptions of many many strange noises - be prepared for some gibberish...

So, what did you do for the four-year break?
Well, um, there was a lot of touching myself which i'm not very proud of. It was very very difficult, a lot of chafing. A LOT of chafing. It sucked... Nah, but I also did a lot of other cartoons really. Futurama opened the door for me a big way as far as voiceover animation was concerned, it was really big. I did a lot of stuff for Disney and I'm doing stuff for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. A lot of kids shows, which is really fun... Yeah a lot of other cartoons, some video games... I lost a bunch of weight, ummm and uh, did some on camera stuff here and there.
How does working on video game voiceovers compare to work on cartoons?
Actually video game voiceovers can be really tedious. Because ...

Justice League is still very much alive guys and I'm of the opinion that all those actors who we have mentioned cast a while back are still locked for this project (with the possible exception of Anton Yelchin) and if it gets going soon they will all be able to suit up pretty quickly.

I also believe that Warner Bros. have spent so much time, effort and money to get the film this far into production that they are scared to death of halting the project indefinitely. They are frantically working on script re-writes and hoping the SAG strike is as quickly resolved as the aborted DGA strike and obviously not the WGA one which would be a worst case scenario.

You can take all this info that I got from an e-mail last night as being legit. Every time we've reported on the Justice League we have been 100% spot on so far and although it doesn't tell us much that we don't know already, it does confirm a few things (the Owen Paterson rumor that's been spreading) and the new secret code name...

The code title of the movie is 7 Friends.

The team (incl Owen Paterson) is still officially on hiatus ...
