A study in Forbes makes a great case for one-note, high salary comedy actor Will Ferrell being Hollywood's most overpaid thesp after two years of underperforming hits and flops.

Their study suggests "for every dollar Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29" which compares to Shia LaBeouf's "$160 return per dollar"... though on that scale the study is slightly flawed as no-one saw Indy IV and Transformers 2 because LaBeouf was in it.
Land of the Lost is a movie that is at least
$35 million in the red for Universal.

This summer's Land of the Lost was one of those epic Hollywood disasters that...ended up costing an estimated $100 million and earned only $65 million at the worldwide box office.

Universal studio heads Marc Shmuger and David Linde were subsequently fired.

Land of the Lost's dismal box office helped land star Will Ferrell at the top of our annual list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars. Ferrell is no longer the sure bet he seemed after hits like Elf ($220 million worldwide box office) and Talladega Nights ($162 million box office). Ferrell's 2008 film Semi-Pro earned only $43 million. Step Brothers did better with $128 million, but it wasn't enough to help Ferrell--mainly because ...

‘The Spirit is the story of Denny Colt, a murdered cop who is mysteriously reborn as the masked crime fighter called The Spirit. Determined to keep his beloved Central City safe, the Spirit pursues Central City’s villains from the shadows and seeks to remove the worst of them all; the megalomaniac known as the Octopus. Yet as busy as his ongoing mission keeps him, the dashing crusader always manages to make time for beautiful women, though he never quite knows if they want to seduce, love or kill him. But there is one lady who will never betray him, and to whom he will always be true: Central City, the proud old metropolis where he was born – twice.’

Thursday, December 4th, and THE SPIRIT production is on full charm offensive at a press conference in the relatively intimate Roseby Room of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Knightsbridge. On hand are some of the principal principals and free coffee, which I drank too much of… but more on that later.

The evening before, an equally select group of lucky journos, and one person who seemed to be looking for a place to have a nap, sat down at a preview screening house to ...

Another new trailer to showcase for you today, this time it's from Frank Miller's directorial debut, THE SPIRIT, which is still struggling to look like a legitimate movie for me.

It still feels unfinished. There's a moment here where Samuel L. Jackson shouts out "Your not making this easy" which sums up the whole thing for me. It looks like an actor on a green screen, with his dialogue and movements feeling forced rather than natural, probably because of the working environment.

That moment's at 1:20ish.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER IN HD

I'm starting to take a liking to the score and I will admit that the movie looks really cool and interesting at some points but there's an extremely cartoony feel to it which I can't get away with. Sure SIN CITY had that aspect to but I think it's heightened to another level here.

Is this the new SIN CITY or is it more like the new SPEED RACER?

And is Eva Mendes taking off a towel enough to convince you to see this when it opens at Christmas?

For the first time in six movies (seven if you include KING LEAR but this one will film first), stunning British actress Keira Knightley has agreed to star in "non-period" movie. This one it seems will be set in modern day New York!

The film is titled LAST NIGHT, where she will co-star with Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet for the directing debut of Massy Tadjedin, the screenwriter of Knightley's THE JACKET. She also wrote this movie too.

Story follows a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.
No word on who is playing what character just yet though Knightley is being topped as the lead, so presumably she is the wife and Worthington her husband. That would make Canet her past love and Mendes the husband's bit on the side. That seems to make sense, right?

Production begins next month on the Gaumont and Nick Wechsler Production according to Variety. I would guess this deal has come about late because I remember reading just the other day that Knightley was taking some time off to "cook and watch ...

An increasingly heavier Val Kilmer has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's remake but not a remake of the Harvey Keitel early 90's thriller Bad Lieutenant.

He will play partner to Nicolas Cage, a cop on the edge who is investigating the drug-related murder of five Senegalese illegal immigrants. Eva Mendes joined the cast last month.

The Hollywood Reporter also kindly tell us that rapper Xzibit who can next be seen in The X-Files: I Want to Believe, will play one of the bad guys, Big Fade.

Other castings include Brad Dourif, Jennifer Coolidge, Denzel Whitaker and more!

The movie is expected to shoot this summer and is a Nu Image/Millennium Films production.

Werner Herzog has truly gone crazy with his upcoming Bad Lieutenant. Not sufficed with casting the least interesting A-list Hollywood star around as his lead but now he has gone out and offered a part to Eva Mendes, with whom said actor Nicolas Cage struggled to generate even a spark of chemistry with in Ghost Rider.

This comes just a week or two after Herzog claimed his version of Bad Lieutenant wasn't a remake which is an outright lie as far as I'm concerned because the Harvey Keitel original was not based on a book or any other form of source material, so if you are borrowing the title and basic concept of the film then no matter how different it may be... it is still a remake.

Cage knows this more than most. His embarrassing turn in The Wicker Man in 2006 was a remake despite the big changes to the plot, tone and narrative.

So it's Eva Mendes then, as long as she accepts the role for the Nu Image/Millennium Production which shoots late summer. Herzog, quite remarkably, got a stunning performance out of limited comedic actor Steve Zahn in the brilliant Rescue Dawn - but he has now given himself ...

Better than the last artwork, that's for sure.

From the trailer and marketing of Frank Miller's quickly approaching adaptation of The Spirit, it sure looks like Eva Mendes is the lead female out of the beauties Scarlett Johansson, Paz Vega, Jaime King and Sarah Poulson.

She plays Sand Saref (not to be confused with the font!), the childhood sweetheart of Denny Colt (the title character played by Gabriel Macht) who turned to the wrong side of the law...

As I say it's definitely an improvement on what we have seen so far. I like the film noir theme of it but the black text on the side of her face looks awful. Also I would have preferred a bigger title for The Spirit and it's certainly an odd choice having jewellery hanging out of her mouth.

Despite Miller's desperate attempts to tell us otherwise, this still feels like a spin-off to Sin City, all that would need to be changed in the marketing would be the title.

We have six months worth of posters, trailers, interviews and set images to go before we need to make up our mind on what this flick is going to be like but Christmas feels like it comes ...

You know I was saying yesterday that Frank Miller's version of The Spirit was likely NOT to be the goofy version of the character and instead a depiction of the detective as if he were Batman living in Miller's Sin City world?

Well pleasantly, I'm happy to say I'm wrong. The Spirit is goofy. He's not too far removed from Adam West's Batman of the 60's, The Green Hornet and very much akin to the comic books and detective radio serials of the 40's and 50's and these pictures capture that beautifully.

And I should have known it all along. It's Frank Miller - no one loves Eisner's original vision more than him. I mean they were pals, he aint' gonna disrespect the character.

DON'T dismiss these images because the photo's of the characters look goofy. The same could have been said about both 300 and Sin City during it's production. Wait until the you see what they look like with the green screen.

I don't know how long we can keep these photo's online but for now, here's MANY shots from the set of the film from Dark Horizons...

Another extremely beautiful actress has joined the cast of Frank Miller's The Spirit says Variety. Unfortunately unlike Scarlett Johansson, this actress can't act and she has a filmography of multiple roles to prove it. Her name is Eva Mendes, you may have recently seen her choke the life out of Ghost Rider.

There's no word on what role she will have in the movie as of yet.

She joins the now full to the brim cast which see's Gabriel Macht as The Spirit, Samuel L. Jackson as the villain The Octopus and Scarlett Johansson as the femme fatale.

Just like his pal Robert Rodriguez, Miller knows exactly what beauties he wants to fill his universe and really it should come to no surprise to us that he has gone for Johansson and Mendes. Just look at his books and especially his Sin City novels. These aren't ordinary women we are talking about, they have more curves than a race track and breasts the size of footballs.

Shooting is set to begin in October for a 2009 release and despite casting the casting of eye candy Mendes, this will be one of my most anticipated movies of that year.
