J.J. Abrams continues to tease us with a glimpse into what the new version of The Klingons will look like once they inevitably become a frequent staple of the new Star Trek franchise. My guess is that we'll see the Klingons fully realised in the next Trek movie, probably as the main villains but for now all we can go on is this deleted scene from this summer's blockbuster hit.

Under that make-up and mask is Alias actor Victor Garber,
officially the first Klingon in the new Trek franchise.
The scene is a re-tooling of many Trek integrations, probably most reminiscent of a famous scene from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where a disgusting slug is promised to be placed in the skull of Eric Bana's Romulan Nero unless he spills everything. Hardcore Star Trek geeks might notice that the interrogation takes place on Rura Penthe, the prison that featured Kirk & McCoy in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

You can certainly see why the scene was cut from the finished movie as it's an easy removal for what needed to be a pretty tight blockbuster ...

Using his hard-earned comic credentials to direct a passion project, Judd Apatow's third written and directed effort Funny People, starring his old best friend and roommate Adam Sandler, is in many respects, exactly the story his filmography demanded from him at this point in time. It's a grown up effort. The third entry in a trilogy of "man-childs" movies after The 40 Year Old Virgin (first time having sex), Knocked Up (pregnancy) and now the life cycle is complete with a look into one's mortality, and a reflection of your journey up too that point and what you do if you had a section chance at life.

Hold on, is that a comedy I've just described. Well yes, Funny People is funny... at times. But dramatic too, even more so than the previous two in his canon.

It's also overtly too long, its running time would rival Magnolia - without the depth of content. Indeed some scenes go nowhere in particular, only present because Apatow’s love for his precious material is so apparent. However, it does not mean the audience will be so enamoured. The use of cameo appearances all feels rather needless (with the exception of Andy Dick, who comes out with the ...

I was worried when The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came out late last year that there was no longer anyhope for The Time Traveler's Wife, a romantic drama that astonishingly began production in September 2007 but we are only just now seeing a trailer for it. Not that I'm complaining that much about the aforementioned comparison, if The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ends up being the best adaptation of this story then I think we did pretty darn well out of it, don't you?.

Pretty amazingly well actually.

A couple of years before I heard about Eric Roth's screenplay for Benjamin Button coming into the hands of David Fincher, I read a book called The Time Traveler's Wife by debut novelist Audrey Niffenegger which I've told anyone that would care to listen is just about the greatest thing I've read in ages. The book like Benjamin Button, tackles the themes of an unusual passage of time on a relationship, unexplained science fiction, love during separation and the question of fatalism in our life and relationships.

It's not a coincidence I don't think that Brad Pitt originally bought the rights to the novel and before his break-up with Jennifer Aniston had planned to ...

As a child my Dad used to watch a fair amount of Star Trek. He watched the original Battlestar Galactica too, as well as Star Wars on video - repeatedly. I have to say that of all the sci-fi he watched I liked Star Trek the least, and that was for one simple reason: it didn't have any robots (at least not that I saw). It's the future for God's sake! Why would they not have robots doing the menial stuff? The reason I say this is that this very simple childhood logic has meant that I have spent my whole life ignorant of the Star Trek phenomenon. I didn't get into it when I was young and have never bothered to try since.

So when the best robot of them all - the J.J. Abrams hype machine - began clunking into action I was not bothered. When the trailers came out I just thought it might be a corny action film that would mobilise Trekkies, but I could not guess whether it would be for good or bad reasons. Once the whole secret screening marketing campaign began I did become intrigued. Why hide it as The Wrath of Khan?

Is this just a ...

One of the better populist novels (it was on the Richard & Judy book club) I've read in recent years, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE has been messed around by New Line/Warner Bros. so many times, I'm hesitant to report that it looks like it's coming out on August 14th in case I put a curse on it.

Hopefully the last few major delays were because of the change of ownership after New Line folded into Warner Bros, and it was a case of a whole new strategy team being on board rather than any problems with the actual film itself.

Eric Bana stars as a Chicago librarian who has a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel to different points of his life, causing complications with his marriage to Rachel McAdams. Ron Livingston co-stars for FLIGHTPLAN director Robert Schwentke.

An awesome read, let's hope it translates.

Why do I find myself saying this statement time and time again when it comes to reboots and rebranding of franchises...

"If it wasn't called STAR TREK and was based on something classic, this would be one of the best looking movies of the year!".

Because it is, really. The movie looks great, it's just about the best ensemble science fiction trailer I've seen in a long time, probably only the trailers for Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE can rival it.

Seeing the hints at the big battles involving the Enterprise, well, this is the kind of thing J.J. Abrams revels in. That ship battle just looks insane.

(we await HD links... though it is attached to WATCHMEN)

Love the backstory about Kirk's father, I didn't know that and I can't figure out whether that is Abrams' touch or whether it was part of the classic mythology that he was Captain for a cup of coffee but saved 800 lives?

This trailer is quite spectacular really, they nailed how to present this movie at the final hour. The moment Kirk sits in the chair, the classic chewing the scenery of Eric Bana, the destruction of the ship... this is one trailer with full confidence.

And is anyone else getting ...

In 1994, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS found Malcolm McDowell desperately trying to return to the Nexus by any means necessary, including the sacrifice of billions of innocent people as he wiped out a whole galaxy so he could cross paths with the gateway to eternity. Kirk and Picard saved the day, using time travel.

In 1996, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT found the Borg time traveling back in time to wipe out the whole of human race on Earth in the 23rd century.

In 2009, J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK will find Eric Bana as the Romulan Nero, going back in time to kill Kirk in the Academy.

But what are his motives? AICN have read the first issue of the IDW Publishing official in-canon comic prequel, whose story has been scribed by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci which flesh out the plot for us...
In the comic Spock is something of a Jor-El figure, trying to avert a unprecedented natural disaster that threatens to obliterate Romulus and its entire star empire. Spock implores the Romulan senate to seek out the more technically advanced Vulcans; combining Romulan and Vulcan resources, Spock believes, can prevent horrifying cataclysm if they act quickly. But the old-guard Romulan leaders remain ...

A much slimmer Seth Rogen, losing the weight fast for his role as the action/hero THE GREEN HORNET, features in the poster for the third directed movie from Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP), the semi-autobiographical FUNNY PEOPLE.

The Universal Pictures comedy/drama which is only a few weeks into filming finds Adam Sandler as a seasoned stand-up comedian who is diagnosed as being terminally ill. His desire to form a true friendship, see's him take a very green performer (Rogen) under his wing.

It promises to be sweet, sad, uplifting and funny with a true moral message. Just like every Apatow film then!

Co-starring are the usual Apatow crew, his real life wife Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill, along with two newcomers to the universe, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman.

One wonders why they are getting the promotion out this early for the film, I didn't expect to see anything until at least February. Especially during filming! Wonder how much dropping the weight changes Rogen's attitude and whether it effects his humor!

Eric Bana has been confirmed as one of the leads in Judd Apatow's semi-autobiographical film about stand up comedy titled Funny People. Bana, a former stand up himself will be playing the husband to Leslie Mann (Apatow's real life wife), so you could justifably say Bana is playing Apatow in the movie.

Variety say that Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill (what a suprise) have also joined the cast, which is toplined by Adam Sandler and also Seth Rogen. Plot details are still being kept hush hush, though it's believed that it focuses on a comedian who has suffered a near death experience.

Production begins mid September on the Universal and Columbia Pictures film due out next year, which marks the third written and directed material from Apatow after the brilliant Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Ok, so we know Judd Apatow is a big fan of Munich.

Or at least we know that he wrote a character that was a big fan of Munich, which in turn most likely means he enjoyed it too. Or maybe he just used it for comedic value and has never even seen the movie?

Ah well. We know that he is aware of Munich at the very least...

The word from CHUD is that Bana is in talks with Apatow for his next movie, which we found out a few days ago would revolve around a stand-up comedian and would be part semi biographical from the comedy genius. Now here's something I didn't know which adds just that extra veritas to the possible rumor and casting. Bana started life in Australia as a stand up comedian! PERFECT!If talks are true, Bana has been offered a big role... playing husband to Leslie Mann. Also on board are Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen but the title of the film is as yet unknown.

There was some talk at Cannes that a sequel to The Other Boleyn Girl would quickly be placed into production, Sony/Columbia seemingly happy with a $66 million worldwide taking from a $35 million budget. Personally with that kind of profit margin after such dreadful reviews, I wouldn't bother but the studio must be having a hard time finding some good projects out there right now.

Now, courtesy of the gossip outlet department of the New York Post, we now know it will be based on Philippa Gregory's book The Boleyn Inheritance which obviously won't star Natalie Portman once again as Anne Boleyn as she kinda lost her head in the last one. From the looks of things Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson) isn't in this one but of course Eric Bana should be back as Henry VIII - probably a little chubbier this time around.
The book is a direct continuation from The Other Boleyn Girl and follows the aftermath of King Henry VIII's decision to dissolve the Catholic church and his fourth and fifth marriage, with Anne of Cleeves, Katherine Howard and Jane Boleyn the three narrators.
I absolutely hated The Other Boleyn Girl with a passion, mainly because of terrible casting choices ...

After suffering through the outrageously dramatic and silly Elizabeth: The Golden Age last year, only barely surviving because of the fantastic and powerful performance yet again from Cate Blanchett - I can't say I was particularly looking forward to watching another tudor melodrama play out the same tired old themes of lust and greed in the 15th century despite the additions of the lovely Natalie Portman and especially my darling Scarlett Johansson.

Though in truth I shouldn't have worried about this movie being overly dramatic. The Other Boleyn Girl is too weak of a film to really get into and enjoy but also it's not silly, camp or sexy enough to be entertaining. It's like on the complete opposite end of the dramatic scale of the Elizabeth movie. It's so dull, so without style, so clumsily acted and directed, so vacant that I honestly believed I was watching one of those David Starkey historical reenactments.

You know the one's I mean, with the really hammy acting from faceless names who play out the material so mediocre and without emotion, for the historian to then come out and tell us what the characters were feeling with the mundane signature score playing in the ...

Two movies I can't wait to see this year are CHOKE and the adaptation of the awesome novel THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, the latter movie especially.

And we have some cool news today about both movies. They have both been given release dates...

First up, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE will open on June 6th in the U.S. going up against the always marketable Adam Sandler and his comedy YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN and the animated animal movie KUNG FU PANDA.

Also given a release is CHOKE, the Clark Gregg adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel which was picked up by Fox Searchlight ...
