How are we to classify this movie? A lot of the publicity would have you believe it is standard kid's fare- holiday fun, but there is a surprising amount of adult material, from Ferrell's Rick Marshall mouthing "Fuck You" to another character, to the perpetual smut that comes out of Danny Mcbride's mouth, there is too much filth and blue language to really allow its classification as a family film. So, is it a nostalgia piece? The originial TV show was hardly a classic, but is remembered pretty fondly in certain circles, and the movie obviously seeks to retain a certain amount of the B-Movie feel (despite costing a disgusting $100m to make), with the retro sets, and the whole ambience of the piece. Admittedly it is a nostalgic piece that has been highjaked by modernity- the juxtaposition of this curious retro world, and the ultra-modern characters, who are as alien to it as the stretch Hummer that also finds itself marooned there is obviously supposed to be an intertextual nod towards not only fans of the original series, but also to those of us who recognise that that particular brand of sci-fi show no longer exists. There is supposed to be humour ...

The P.R. people behind the annual Jimmy Carr stand-up concert DVD, send me a review copy every single year and if I'm being honest, out of all the great Blu-Ray movies that come through my door, I look forward to receiving this DVD almost more than anything else.

Jimmy Carr: Telling Jokes is out now,
priced at £11.94 at Amazon.

I always have a good time with Carr. His jokes are quick-fire one-liners mostly, some of them a little too smart for their own good and delivered so precisely, which so much assuredness that you won't hear laughter until a few seconds later. I.E. - when the audience has actually processed what he has said. But he is an old-school comedian, a guy you feel comfortable with giving such a name-tag because this is what he does. He is a full time, real stand-up comic.

With a brand new stand-up show once every year with no recycled material, he simply must be the hardest working comedian in the business today. And he knows it too, and makes a point of the fact during this set. His jokes per minute ratio comes up on the screen and it really does put his peers to shame.

So ...

Monday 26th October 2009. The day of the British DVD and Blu-Ray release of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, and a significant event in the history of horror DVD releases in general.

Timed almost poetically to coincide with the cinematic release of the sublimely enjoyable Zombieland, Raimi's movie is a triumph for the other type of horror movie. From neither of the twin favourites of slasher rehashes or complex Korean psycho-horrors (fellow writer Mike Edwards claimed 3D Horrors were one of the kingpins in his original review, but I cant see past R-slashes myself), Drag Me to Hell is a good-old fashioned monster flick, resplendent with shocks and gore, and joyfully chocked full of Raimi's signature humour.

If Spider-Man was Raimi’s Hollywood opus- the moment the fan-boy got big boots, Drag Me To Hell is the moment he returned to his true calling. Everything about this film screams Raimi, from the writing to the design of Mrs Ganush and the other various demonic presences. It’s one for the fans who might have been turned off as the Spider-Man films progressed, believing their God to be moving too far into irredeemably consumer-friendly territory. The best thing that can be said in that ...

Another review that missed its release date thanks to our sabatical a few weeks back- but one that I have a soft spot for, so you get the pleasure of reading it now. It's a bit pricey at £94.98, but every episode is like a mini-movie, and a 4 star one at least each and every time.

I'm a sucker for good-looking boxsets, often regardless of th content, so you'll forgive my hyperbole when I discuss this beautiful creation. I mean look at it! Such clever and cool craftsmanship hasn't been seen since Ford rolled out the Mark Two Capri. Ford famously never said that "you can have it any colour you like, as long as it's black", well this complete Columbo collection comes in a cigar coloured wooden box.... and there is truly no other way to own this set.

What I said in my original review of the last volume of Columbo to be released still rings true...

Thanks in part to a furious repeating cycle on British television, Columbo has taken its place alongside Diagnosis Murder and Murder She Wrote as the staple ingredients of the unemployed and the unemployable’s daily diet of day-time television.
I realise it's a little late to review the few weeks old Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li DVD transfer and there won't be a great deal of interest in this film anymore (if there was any in the first place), but so compelled was I by the utter ineptitude of this project that I feel I must post this belated response.

I cant say I was exactly shocked- when the project was announced I scoffed along with everyone else, and I never intended to see it at the cinema- I have fair better things to spend my money on (invasive surgery comes considerably higher on the list), and I fully expected it to follow the trend of recent computer game adaptations and suck terribly. But as with Dragonball Z, there is something so unforgivably bad about The Legend of Chun Li, that I cannot hold my tongue. Even the temporary closure of our beloved Obsessed Towers cannot shackle me when I feel the need to share these musings of mine.

Appalling unintentionally hilarious Jackie Chan-style fight scenes, non-Chinese Chun Lis and blonde Irish M.Bisons? Must be the new Street Fighter adap. Good work there with keeping it traditional. And where on Earth ...

Some of you might remember my bitter (if somewhat naive) disappointment with Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus. Far from being the B-movie cheese-fest I wanted, it was just a cheap money spinner that cynically looked to cash in on the surprising popularity of its trailer. After that bitter experience I have been a little more cautious in approaching low-budget genre films, and so it was with relatively low expectations that I revved up the Wasting Away DVD earlier this week. I can tell you now, my faith in low-budget innovation was instantly restored.

The film is essentially a gimmicky take on the zombie genre: military experiment to create super-soldiers goes wrong, toxic sludge is irresponsibly disposed of, and ironically ends up in another experiment when it contaminates a beer ice-cream made by a bunch of twenty-somethings. But once they ingest it, the world seems a strange place. Everything moves really quickly and people react to them differently. What can it be? A stranger appears and tells them it's because they, like he, are now super-soldiers and they must save mankind from a nasty virus they've been contaminated with. So, blissfully unaware that it's they that have been mutated into zombies, they ...

When I look at the state of the Hollywood machine these days, with the same darlings of the industry continually picking up work more on the strength of their brand than on their art, I wonder where the really original injection of work will come from. It's all well and good suggesting new-fangled technological advances that will shift the silver screen onto another plane of existence, but there has to be stylistic and creative progression to back up the advances in the trade or you end up with an empty headed goddess. Like MeganFox sort of...

So to come across a film like Pop Skull, which makes a mockery of the term micro-budget and still manages to be an excellent experience is a good little turn up for the books. And one that shouldnt be underestimated. Here we have the perfect example of how to make a film that has a real statement to make (as well as one that can easily be classed alongside the better recent horrors) but which manages to do so without any financial muscle at all- that it got any kind of distribution deal outside of digital providers is both wondrous and testament to its surprising ...

(Apologies to the distributors and to Simon for the late posting of this review. The editor's fault...)

The evolution of any movie career- particularly those that involve a successful beginning in television- is an intriguing spectacle. For the few that win sustained notoriety, thousands fall by the wayside, no matter how auspicious their beginnings. With Gavin & Stacey, James Corden and Mathew Horne struck comedy gold- the storylines, the humour and the pathos were just sublime and the series' two spell-binding seasons and Christmas specials easily stand shoulder to shoulder with The Office and Flight of the Conchords as the best comedy series of the past ten years.

Why they then had to follow their sitcom up with the terrible "sketch-show" formatted Horne & Corden is a total mystery to me, and could well have spelled the end of their flirtation with stardom, like the proverbial second experimental album spelling the end of a potentially huge rock act (Terence Trent D'Arby, know your shame). So, the success of their inevitable and often difficult transition into a big screen project on the back of a tenuous immediate track record looked less of a certainty as it may have had Lesbian Vampire Killers come out immediately following ...

Columbo Series 10, Vol 2

Thanks in part to a furious repeating cycle on British television, Columbo has taken its place alongside Diagnosis Murder and Murder She Wrote as the staple ingredients of the unemployed and the unemployable's daily diet of day-time television. It seems that the lazy generation simply cant get enough of that wonderful scowling little man. But, I warn you, do not be duped by the title- this is in fact a selection of the made-for-TV movies starring Peter Falk's legendary detective, and not the actual conclusion of a tenth TV series: the plus side of course is that you're far less likely to have seen them all a thousand times while pretending to be too ill to go in to work.

In this CSI governed era, as flashy technique and camera angles take the place of genuine detective work and ingenuity (and even dare I say it, proper characterisation- say what you want about Horatio or them other ones, they'll never have the unbridled appeal of the originals from the 70s and 80s heyday), it is difficult to imagine that anything like Columbo will ever hit the screens again. The closest we had recently was Monk, but he was arguably ...

Part of me inevitably gravitates towards the opinion that what Joaquin Phoenix did next will painfully overshadow this particularly good film. A shame as well, because this is the first time in a long while that I have actually believed Phoenix deserves any of the many plaudits he's steadily picked up since stepping out of the shadow that was cruelly robbed of us when his brother died.

No doubt Phoenix's true motivations will be made clear soon enough (as if anyone is still fooled) but long after the beard lies forlornly shone in the basin of his sink, the intellect behind the intention will be questioned. If, as suspected, Phoenix is merely frolicking in the well-trodden ground that used to be Andy Kaufman's favourite haunt, I would have to wonder why he felt the need to do it, unless an uber-post-comic documentary arrives purporting to chronicle the much vaunted "real story" behind the revelation. Wouldn't that be the ultimate comment on our celebrity-obsessed cultures? A true punk on the Heat/Us Today generations.

But, Oh God, what if he's being serious- and as long as there is the thinnest of suggestion shall be burdened with this particular fear?

Anyway, on to the business of reviewing. First off, ...

I would love to be able to sit here and tell you I'd reviewed Streets of Blood and had been completely blown away- that I had just watched Val Kilmer cement the comeback he playfully hinted at with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and 50 Cent notch up his breakout performance that would surely see him fully accepted as an actor in his own right.

Sadly though someone has kidnapped my postman. Seriously, I know there is talk of a strike once again over pay (try working in retail you Postman Pat fucks!) but I havent had so much as a Reader's Digest Winners Acknowledgement for two weeks. Having expected a raft of review discs in the same period, I'm more than a touch miffed at the conspicuous lack of even the lightest thud on the mat of Obsessed Towers in the morning.

So, instead I'm stuck with just advertising the releases Ive missed out on (I refuse to stream things generally), and watching some of the millions of DVDs I've bought over the past six months. Yesterday, as a link to the Val Kilmer led Streets of Blood, I watched Top Secret! (a lesser known output of the Zuckers). Needless to say, it's ...

The Good , The Bad, The Weird is one of my favourite films in a very long time. I raved about it from the time of the London Film Festival and now that it's about to come out on DVD in the UK I feel like it's time I started my little hype machine up again. With a glut of disappointing action films this summer (more on that to come) getting hold of this great movie on DVD might be the only way to stop Star Trek being the one adrenaline-fuelled memory of 2009.

For those that haven't already heard about/seen it, The Good, The Bad, The Weird has been labelled an 'Oriental Western' by director Kim Jee-Woon, and it's a curious action film set in 1930s Manchuria that takes its inspiration from Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but the plot is led by the Ugly (or the Weird).

Beginning with an audacious train robbery, undertaken simultaneously by three bandits, the film launches itself into a series of martial arts/Wedstern gunfight fusion battles that leap from from the screen with sheer energy. Sporting a series of twists and turns and some superb acting from Song Kang-Ho (The Host) ...

Since we've already offered a DVD review of The Wrestler (see it here), I'm tasked with providing something different to celebrate the British release.

I am a serious DVD and Blu-Ray collector, devoted to building up as close to an essential tome as possible; combining exclusive special edition releases with those movies that simply have to be owned. Accordingly I am interested in how each DVD I buy fit into the overall collection- what they say about who I am as a collector, and what they contribute to my shelves- and it is within this context that I want to consider The Wrestler.

So, your acquisition of the The Wrestler means...
That You Appreciate A Damn Good Yarn
On paper, this is an unconventional success story to say the least- a Mickey Rourke-headed, painfully tightly budgeted Hollywood smash filmed as a "proactive documentary" about the flamboyant, fluorescent world of professional wrestling. But at the heart of matters is a phenomenal minimalistic script, some wonderfully observed relationships and a central character whose conception is only matched by the beautiful performance that makes this film. The story, enriched by the awe-inspiring performance that Rourke brings to it, is an exceptionally simple look at the dysfunctional relationships that mark the life of a ...

Let me now express my undying love and devotion for the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris. Along with Jason Bateman, Harris is one of the great comedic actors in Hollywood and a genial, self-deprecating guy. You can't help but love him. He rescues every project he touches, except for this one; it's so damn good that it doesn't need saving.

THE FILM

Created solely as an internet-only experience, DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG concerns one Dr. Horrible, a mad scientist hell-bent on ruling the world and winning the heart of the shy girl at the laundrymat, Penny (Felicia Day). Unfortunately his arch-nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion), has plans to stop him and steal the girl of his dreams at the same time. Oh, and they break into song from time to time, since it's a musical.

Although a low budget internet film, creator/director Joss Whedon has sprinkled enough life and love on this to make the production values part of its charm. The songs are unbelievably good throughout, and this is coming from someone who despises musicals.

In something like this, the performances matter most. And in this regard, Whedon has made some terrific casting choices. Harris is in top form here, mugging just enough to ...

When you finished watching DONNIE DARKO, did you sit back and wonder whatever happened to the little girl in Sparkle Motion after the events of the film?

Yeah, neither did I. And apparently the producers didn't either, given the extreme lack of thought, imagination, or purpose behind this unwanted sequel to Richard Kelly's cult classic.

THE FILM
A stunning waste of time.

The film stars Daveigh Chase as Samantha Darko, Donnie's younger sister. The film opens seven years after the events of the first film, as Samantha and her annoying cunt of a best friend Corey (Briana Evigan) are taking a cross-country trek. Their car breaks down, trapping them in a small Utah town with the usual cast of small-town weirdos. Almost immediately, they're picked up by brooding rebel heartthrob Randy (Ed Westwick), who attempts to fix their car. However, evil forces begin to descend upon them, and it becomes clear that Donnie's wormhole has made another appearance to fold the events surrounding them all.

The only redeeming thing about this production is the cinematography by Marvin V. Rush, which is lush and layered. Everything else is complete trash. The screenplay by Nathan Atkins is merely an incompetent rehashing of Kelly's DARKO mythology, except that ...

The action-packed first sequel, which has had multiple incarnations in all formats, now receives yet another BLU-RAY edition to coincide with the impending release of TERMINATOR:SALVATION. Is there someone on Earth who doesn't already own this thing?

THE FILM

By now, most people are familiar with this wildly popular continuation of the TERMINATOR franchise. Director James Cameron followed up his risky flop THE ABYSS with this explosive and crowd-pleasing sequel.

Seeing it again after a long time, it's clear that the film is not quite the unstoppable machine that it appeared to be in 1991. The script relies too heavily on nonsensical left turns (so Sarah - hiding in the desert - just hops into a car one day and drives to kill Miles Dyson out of nowhere? Oooookayyyy ...). The ending is a little silly as well: A giant tanker crashes into a smelting plant, and everyone working there just leaves, allowing the combatants to fight freely in the plant. However, the film is put together so well that many of the seams are not visible on the first few viewings.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has never been better onscreen, his deadpan delivery stealing the movie constantly. Linda Hamilton, buffed and vicious, is captivating as ...

...to mediocrity.

Released: 4th May 2009

It’s difficult to write much about a film that inspires so little, especially since we have been here before innumerate times. American Pie, Road Trip and Van Wilder all stuck to the same awkward outsiders seeking social validation (largely through sex) motif; even employing the same identikit stock of characters. Then Superbad broke the mould, with refreshing success and inspired a new wave of - you can see clearly in Josh Zuckerman’s performance an attempt to capture the awkward anti-cool charisma that Michael Cera brought to that movie.

Zuckerman isn’t a bad actor- he’s just the wrong type of actor if this film is anything to go by: trying to make waves in a market already saturated with his type. But then, maybe I’m being a tad harsh- his take on a young Dr Evil in Goldmember was a particular highlight of a pretty low production, and I have no real career substance upon which to make an informed judgement yet. I can only pray this isn’t the model upon which his career will rest. Sex Drive isn’t the worst film in the world- nor is it remotely close to being the best: it’s just a reworking ...

What would happen if you travelled back in time? According to Back to the Future you risk all sorts of hazards, including potentially becoming your own father. According to The Time Machine you could witness a nasty future and nearly get eaten by subterranean cannibals. Minority Report even suggests that you tying to do good could wind up getting you stuck in a bind. So it seems that the creative forces of the film world are not too optimistic about the impact of time travel. So with this a history of time travel trouble in mind I watched Timecrimes expecting some messy mix-ups. I wasn't disappointed.

Hector has just moved to a house in the countryside. He's an ordinary guy living a decent life. An unexceptional everyman. So when he sees a naked chick walking through the woods he's pretty intrigued. But when he goes to investigate what this woman is doing he is ambushed by a weird guy whose head is encased in bandages. Fleeing the scene he spots a strange building on a nearby hill and breaks in, hoping the crazy bandage man won't find him. When he is coaxed into hiding in a strange tank by a man in the building he ...

Release Date: 27th April 2009

So here I go with the fourth season of the bastard child of Buffy and The X-Files...

I must confess that I wouldn’t have ordinarily classed myself as a fan of Supernatural; I dipped in and out of the first three seasons without feeling particularly drawn to it beyond mild entertainment. The problem was time, as ever: over here in Blighty, Supernatural only ever seems to occupy some arse-end graveyard slot on a network that will never be any more than of secondary importance. And I was usually either too tired or too beer-basted at that sort of time to really concentrate. Not the most conducive environment to develop an affinity with so few characters, and buy into the fierceness of their relationship or the history behind their Demon-hunting tendencies. It should be on ITV1 at the very least.#

But following this enforced affair with the good-looking Winchester boys, I have been forced to reassess my allegiances. I have been a vocal and vociferous malcontent when it comes to British television’s lack of prowess when it comes to making this kind of premium horror/sci-fi series that have a sustained effect on the canon. America does suspension of belief ...

I'm a stupid white guy from the suburbs. I don't know rap unless it starts with Saran. But the rap movement in music occurred in my generation, and has completely overtaken the scene since. I have my favorites among the greats; Notorious B.I.G. wasn't at the top of my list.

While I think the guy had tremendous talent, I don't consider most of his output to be at the same mental and philosophical level as someone like Tupac Shakur. Sadly, the guy was shot down just as he was making a record that actually began to show the man underneath the posturing and the bluster. Who knows what he might have done had he lived.

It's this promise that drives the new biopic NOTORIOUS, now out on BLU-RAY and DVD after a successful run last January.

THE FILM

I won't say much more about the film itself, since I covered that review here or here.

However, I would like to add that rewatching the film through the extended cut offered here (you get both the theatrical and director's cut in this collection) made me like the film a bit more a second time. Jamal Woolard truly does a great job selling the man behind ...
