First off, my apologies for the radio silence recently- I have become somewhat of a Hunter S Thompson wannabe, and decided that the best approach to journalism is one liberally peppered with sordid antics and debauchery doused in alcohol. Apparently this doesnt go down so well with the powers that be, and my wrists are well and trully slapped, so Im going to be uber-professional and not let myself or anyone else down. Plus I'm never drinking again thanks to this hangover.

As if by magic, today is another double whammy, thanks to the technical mishap last week that prematurely killed the website, and because of the poor releases that week not really warranting a late write up on their own. So here goes...

20th July Releases

I'd call this a pretty weak week if I was feeling particularly harsh, which I am. It is perhaps fairer to consider this week as the lull before Watchmen hits the market next week- though the way that has been handled in marketing terms looks to be a fucking joke in comparison to the heavy-handed assault that was the pre-cinematic campaign. And for anyone who hasnt seen the covers yet- be prepared to be thoroughly underwhelmed! Anyway, ...

Julia Roberts and Clive Owen are reunited for the first time since Closer, but far from being a messed up couple in high society they're... well, they're a messed up couple again. But this time they're secret agents, which is much cooler. Plus Duplicity isn't based on a play, so more stuff happens.

The story begins in the 70s, or at least in the indiscriminate late 20th century. Ray Koval (Owen) spots a beautiful-ish woman with a large mouth and scrawny legs from across the room. It's Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts). Despite a few awkward 'lines' he gets her up to his room. The problem is, it seems she planned it all along as he wakes up from his drug-induced slumber to find his room turned upside and Claire vanished. We then cut to the present, and Ray is now doing private work for a soap company and, you guessed it, Claire turns up there too.

What ensues is a mixture of between a kind of whodunnit thriller, a romance control and an affable comedy. (Think Mr. and Mrs. Smith but less vacuous, with less attractive stars, and less comedy scenes.) These elements are balanced really well, with the humour providing some nice ...

Tony Gilroy was responsible for one of the best movies of 2007 with his directorial debut MICHAEL CLAYTON and the BOURNE series screenwriter is back with DUPLICITY, a corporate thriller that reunites him with Tom Wilkinson, Academy Award nominated for CLAYTON.

But the bigger reunion is the one between CLOSER co-stars Clive Owen and Julia Roberts, the two leads of the movie who do have a undeniable chemistry with each other. DUPLICITY is the story of CIA officer Claire Stenwick (Roberts) and MI6 agent Ray Koval (Owen) who have left the world of government intelligence to cash in on the highly profitable cold war raging between two rival multinational corporations.

Another great character actor, Paul Giamatti, plays opposite Wilkinson as one as of the corporate bosses. That team-up almost feels like a tussle between which great actor can win the supporting player nod come Oscar night (next year's though of course).

Feels more light hearted and rather OCEAN'S ELEVEN like than the seriousness of MICHAEL CLAYTON. And with the title we can expect many, many, many twists on just whose side is everyone on, hopefully Gilroy will manage to keep it all interesting. He certainly has my faith ...
