The latest movie from Guillermo Arriaga is as ponderous and slow-burning as you'd expect. Deep-seated emotional problems are examined in a complex movie that, as ever with Arriaga, refuses to fit into a straightforward narrative.

Split between two time periods and places, the first half of the film throws out pieces of a puzzle that the rest of the film endeavours to solve. Two families in New Mexico are tracked as mother of four Gina (Kim Basinger) engages in a love-affair with Mexican neighbour Nick (Joaquim de Almeida) who is a father of a relatively large family himself. Meanwhile in Oregon Sylvia (Charlize Theron) is running a restaurant, she is frequently smoking and looking pensive and apparently regularly engages passing sexual encounters. The alarm bells of emotional turmoil (a built-in mental device of many arthouse movie fans) begin to go off and the stage is set for Arriaga's challenge.

What unfolds as we try to piece the narrative together is the story of fractured families whose pain leads to events that have repercussions more severe than could have been imagined. The affair between Gina and Nick has several nuances that prevent them from becoming villains, and force us to invest equal time ...

The underrated hero from the underworld has returned, and this time he has got one heck of a task ahead of him. Following on from HELLBOY, a decent origin film with some cool effects, his latest deployment takes us far closer to Guillermo del Toro's cinematic safe place: a place filled with old-school mythology, dangerous clockwork villainy and plenty of other visual treats. And make no mistake, there really are one hell of a lot (sorry) of treats on show here. HELLBOY II is a visual extravaganza that just gets better and better as it progresses, and after two hours still left me hungering for more.

For those of you that don't know, Hellboy is the name given to the big red devil-like dude who was summoned from hell by Nazis during World War Two. Captured by the allies, he eventually ended up working for a secret US security department known as the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The BPRD is called to the rescue again when a mass of tooth fairies (crazed little beasts that feast on calcium rich deposits in animal bodies) are unleashed in an auction house. It turns out that this event has bigger repercussions when ...

Ok this is a weird but absolutely fascinating project.

The Hollywood Reporter say that Zac Efron will lead Richard Linklater's next movie ME AND ORSON WELLES based on a coming-of-age novel of the same name by Robert Kaplow. The script has been adapted by Linklater's friends Holly Gent Palmo (production coordinator on DAZED AND CONFUSED) and Vincet Palmo (first unit director on many of Linklater's films).

The really interestingly sounding movie see's Efron as a high school student who gets noticed by Mercury Theatre founder Orson Welles who gives him a bit part in his production of Julius Caesar... the show that made Welles a star. The book as will the fim, chronicles the kid's week learning about life and love.

The daunting task of playing the mamooth Welles on screen has been given to film newcomer Chrisitan McKay but he's not a newcomer to Welles. He has played the guy on his own Broadway theatre production ROSEBUD which was actually written for him because of his likeness to the legendary figure.

Ben Chaplin from THE WATER HORSE has been cast as stage actor George Coulouris, who was the man who adopted Charles Foster Kane in Welles' terrific movie.

Now usually I would be dead ...

If you live in the U.S, you are going to be privileged with a second chance to see MICHAEL CLAYTON in cinema next week, as it's being re-released in around 1,000 locations across North America on January 25th.

The Warner Brothers movie written and directed by Tony Gilroy was one of the most consistently cited movies in critics top ten lists of the best films of 2007.

The decision to re-release the drama is pretty consistent with the kind of studio decisions made to give outsider-flicks some Oscar buzz in the run up to the ceremony and to try and boost the box office of a film that maybe wasn't as big a success as it should have been the first time round.

When it first went wide on October 12th 2007, the Warner Brothers movie finished a disappointing fourth for the weekend with a $10 million taking, dragging behind TYLER PERRY'S WHY DID I GET MARRIED and even the badly reviewed thriller WE OWN THE NIGHT (although only by a whisker with that movie).

The film did stick around longer than expected though and finished it's domestic run at around $39 million, and did pretty well oversea's.

The small release might also help the ...

Will Smith has confirmed to Omelete (via Collider) earlier reports that Steven Spielberg has approached the actor for a part in the director's next film THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7.

This is likely to be the part of Bobby Seale, one of the 8 defendants charged with conspiracy and inciting to riot, in the wake of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, in Chicago and the one prone to outbursts and rants.

Indeed he was sentenced to four years of imprisonment for contempt during one of his outbursts and had to be bound and gagged to calm him down.

Smith says...
"When Steve is ready he will send it. I don’t know specifics, story, anything, but he told me the filming dates, so I can be free to do it. It’s not a 100% sure thing yet, but I’m confident."
Smith's only other pre-strike movie is the emotional drama SEVEN POUNDS, which reunites the actor with the director who gave him an Oscar nominated performance in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and co-stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson which has a February/March start date.

I've heard late-March/early April for CHICAGO 7... so it will be tight but I think Smith could fit it in.

Let's hope he does ...

The first movie to benefit from the Weinsteins Interim agreement with the WGA is PATRIOTS, a pickup by the studio from a script by Robert Eisele (THE GREAT DEBATERS) with Forest Whitaker to lead and Tim Story to direct.

Tim Story being that hack director of the two FANTASTIC FOUR movies, who before that gave us the hideous TAXI and BARBERSHOP.

The movie revovles around the real life figure of Al Collins, a basketball coach for a school in L.A., who led his Patriots team to the state championship just one year after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the school and displaced many of it's students. His winning team consisted of 10 players from 5 different schools who banded together in the aftermath of the disaster.

Both Whitaker & Story were free to work, so the Weinsteins went after them immediately according to Variety. Production will begin in April, with a slow burner release expected in April to match the strategy that worked pretty well for THE GREAT DEBATERS ($25.8 million domestic).

It's almost like two different scales of the spectrum with this one isn't it? Whitaker the amazingly gifted actor and Story the ultimate studio hack. Gonna be interesting to see how this unlikely duo ...

On the list of movies hoping to be made pre-strike was a mysterious project titled WHIP IT which instantly caught my attention as it had actress Drew Barrymore listed as director, the first time her name has ever been attached to a project in that role.

It's taken a while but finally we have some concrete news about what the project is about. WHIP IT is a coming of age story about a young girl who finds her identity through rollerblading, and it's based upon Shauna Cross' 2007 novel "Derby Girl". The title of the book apparently changed because WHIP IT sounds more mysterious (it's actually a move in rollerblading).

The film is being made and financed at Mandate Pictures the same studio behind JUNO... and wouldn't ya know it... Ellen Page is the name that Shauna Cross gave in an interview with Film School Rejects when asked about the casting of the film which she has adapted into a screenplay.

The book is targeted for a March start date, once Page has completed her work on the lesbian werewolf movie (seriously) JACK AND DIANE.

Although a roller-blading movie is far from the type of film I'm desperate to see, Page is proving herself ...

No actor is officially locked in for Steven Spielberg's TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 movie despite casting rumors that could probably fill two adaptations and the truth is at this point we don't know for 100% that this will be Spielberg's next picture.

Though I'm pretty sure it will be but I'm just basically trying to warn you about taking any of theses rumors as absolute gospel.

CHUD are reporting that Spielberg has set his eyes on Jeff Daniels and Colin Hanks for supporting roles in his retelling of the anti-Vietnam War activists arrested at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Daniels would play Dave Dellinger, one of the older members of the group with Hanks playing Rennie Davis, an SDS activist who was more interested in a political rather than social change.

Neither Daniels or Hanks have ever worked with Spielberg in the past (though Hanks' father obviously has numerous times) and you have to believe they would both sign on in a heartbeat to do a Spielberg movie.

The site also claim that Sacha Baron Cohen is not 100% locked for the role of Abbie Hoffman just yet and a crunch time will have to come soon over his involvement as Spielberg wants this ...

In an interview with The Telegraph over here in the U.K, when asked about his future projects Jones mentioned that he wants to adapt the Ernest Hemingway novel "Islands in the Stream", a book that was published in 1970 some years after the author's death as a way to make up for some of his last books which received negative reviews.

The book which was cobbled together from rough but seemingly completed notes found at Hemingway's house follows a painter through three different stages of his life. His time of tranquility in the Bahamas, his time of cynicism during WW-II when he hears of his son's death in battle and then a final act which see's him travel out to confront a German boat full of Nazi soldiers.

"Islands in the Stream" has already been adapted into a film in 1977 from the talented Franklin J. Schaffner (PLANET OF THE APES) and starring the great George C. Scott in what Jones calls "a bad movie".

The actor to be seen in the U.K. in two films in the coming weeks (IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) wouldn't give out more details but I don't think he's even begun ...

This critically acclaimed documentary charts the fortunes of five young footballer freestylers who blag a flight to the USA and set off to busk their way across America in search of their idol of Diego Maradonna.

Having struggled at the box office this superlative feature will be looking for some success with DVD sales, and it more than deserves it. This is a travel tale that simply oozes sincerity, it refuses to be sucked into the usual contrived twists and turns of your standard road-trip film, and provides more than its fair share of original, funny and moving moments.

In the Hands of the Gods comes complete with plenty of awesome freestyling scenes, but even if that scene isn't for you there is much much more, for this is a film with hidden depths beyond it's shiny sport-related veneer. The group of lads are from a mixture of backgrounds, and are tied together only by the shared love of freestyling, and of course through their idol Maradonna. The dynamic between them creates the heart of the film, with each one of the boys emanating their own character and making their own decisions which takes the film down surprising and sometimes painful routes ...

Jessica Biel is to lead the romantic comedy EASY VIRTUE, a brand new adaptation of the 1920's Noel Coward play which is being setup at the London based Ealing Studio's.

The play was first and last filmed on screen 80 years ago by the great Alfred Hitchcock, in what is generally agreed to be one of his 'lesser' silent films.

EASY VIRTUE will follow Biel as an American divorcee who moves to the South of France and marries a young Englishman (Ben Barnes, the young lead from STARDUST) on a complete spur of the moment. The comedy chronicles their return to England and their first meeting with his meetings, who are to be played by British vets Colin Firth and Kristen Scott Thomas.

Stephan Elliott, who directed the 1994 comedy/drama THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT will helm the movie he co-wrote with newcomer Sheridan Jobbins, with principal photography to begin next week.

Biel and Barnes? The guy who failed to carry STARDUST and Biel who is only interesting when she takes off her clothes?

Good luck with that!

Our first official look at CHOKE is below, the Sam Rockwell, Kelly Macdonald, Clark Gregg and Angelica Huston movie based upon Chuck Palahinuk's popular novel. Chuck Plahinuk was of course the author of FIGHT CLUB, a great book which David Fincher turned into a cracking film which may have defined the 90's.

The director of this movie is Clark Gregg. No that's not a spelling error, he is an actor in the movie and is making his directorial debut with the flick after spending two decades as a steadily working actor. Unfortunately he did contribute to the script of WHAT LIES BENEATH but we shall forget about that because there is no way he can screw up a Plahinuk novel, right?
Sex addict and colonial theme park worker, Victor Mancini, has devised a complicated scam to pay for his mom's hospital bills while she suffers from an Alzheimer's disease that hides the truth about his childhood. He pretends to choke on food in a restaurant and the person who "saves" him will feel responsible for Victor for the rest of their lives.
Our first look at the movie comes from Collider...

Of course he is going to accept!

Variety say that Aussie film-maker Philip Noyce (CATCH A FIRE, THE SAINT) has accepted the directing job on MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS, and will film the Scarlett Johansson movie this April, in London and Scotland.

The film is a biopic on the ill-fated Mary who became Scotland's queen at 9 months in 1542 and, later, a rival to the English throne, imprisoned for many years on charges of plotting to murder Elizabeth I, a Protestant. And we all know what happened next!

The story was of course in the opening act to last year's over-dramatic saga ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE and is one of the most re-told stories in Tudor history.

Samantha Morton played Mary exceptionally well in last year's movie and one thing that strikes you instantly with Scarlett Johansson is her famous blonde hair and the fact that her bodily features look nothing at all like Mary, something which Morton actually did...

I fear a huge mis-casting right here and that's coming from one of Scarlett's biggest fans. Still they have a good director on board here and it's been six years since his last English-language film so I'm intrigued to see him get back into ...

No doubt you've heard that Nicole Kidman is pregnant and has had to pull out of her latest film THE READER, a period drama that was set to reunite Kidman with the writing, directing and producing crew that helped the actress win her only Oscar to date for THE HOURS.

It's not all doom and gloom though, Variety say that the great Kate Winslet will be her replacement and apparently she was actually the Weinsteins first choice for the part back in the Summer but her schedule on REVOULTIONARY ROAD stopped her from committing.

Which is bizarre, because The Weinsteins soon went after Kidman who agreed to star in the picture but wouldn't herself be available until she finished up the long shoot on Baz Luhrmann's AUSTRALIA, which is why it's taken so long for this flick to begin filming and why Winslet is now actually available to star.

The British actress will play the seducing 36 year old women who gets involved in a love affair with a 15 year old boy... who later in life becomes her lawyer when she is prosecuted for war crimes committed during World War II. Ralph Fiennes has been cast from day one as the older ...

The deal made over the weekend allowing writers working for United Artists to continue working on their scripts during the writer's strike won't resurrect Oliver Stone's next movie PINKVILLE as we speculated on Saturday.

The Hollywood Reporter say the movie has been scrapped because the actors and crew have gone off to work on other projects.

I'm not particularly Stone's biggest fan so I can't say I'm crying over this announcement and although the subject matter of the My Lai Massacre sounded interesting, Stone's past record for turning important historic events into satisfying movies are few and far between.

And haven't we seen enough of Stone's Vietnam movies by now?

We shall keep an eye on U.A. over the next few weeks though. Will they capitalize on the fact that they are the only movie studio allowed to write scripts at this present moment in time?

Are Will Smith, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Kevin Spacey about to join the probably already cast Sacha Baron Cohen in Steven Spielberg's post-INDY movie THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7, a film which could begin shooting as early as March?

That's what Vanity Fair would have us believe anyway. These are the names that they allegedly saw on the desk of Spielberg in relationship to actors the legendary director is interested in for his historical drama...
Will Smith

Taye Diggs

Adam Arkin

Kevin Spacey

and heavily rumored elsewhere...

Sacha Baron Cohen (who the British press claim has accepted a $6 million offer to play Abbie Hoffman as we spoke about here)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman (as William Kunstler)

Kunstler (pictured above in his later days) was an American civil rights activist and a self proclaimed 'radical lawyer' who defended the CHICAGO 7 against charges of conspiring to incite riots in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Hoffman would seem ideal for this role, instantly commanding that authorative lawyer feel and a CV full of amazing work, three of which he gave us this year alone with THE SAVAGES, BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR'E DEAD and CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR.

If Spielberg could secure Will Smith and Kevin Spacey (I believe Riggs and ...

Xavier Gens, the French director whose first Hollywood movie HITMAN was rechopped and taken out of his hands for a soft theatrical release has landed two big names for this next project. Viggo Mortensen and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, two guys who put in my favourite performances of 2007 (EASTERN PROMISES and BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR'E DEAD respectively) are in talks for VANIKORO.

The movie which was also written by Gens, sounds kinda like CASTAWAY or Lost as a buddy survival movie. Two ships crash on the deserted island of Vanikoro in the late 18th century but whilst most survivors have salvaged enough material to build a small ship to escape, for whatever reason Hoffman and Mortensen are left behind for years.

I love the idea. One of my favourite movies of the year, which just missed out on my top ten was RESCUE DAWN which featured Christian Bale and Steve Zahn in a similar kind of plot, where they are stuck behind enemy lines in a prison camp... but their strong chemistry in a desperate situation truly made for a great movie.

Awesome casting if it pays off, Gens has done a remarkable job getting these two big names interested after the ...

Daniel Radcliffe's going to have a real difficult time in his career trying to overcome the 'type-cast' disease that hits young actors when they have played an iconic role but I will say, so far he's done a terrific job in picking work outside of POTTER. His parts in the adult themed DECEMBER BOYS and the made for t.v. feature MY BOY JACK haven't done him any harm at all and alongside his big theatre role, he is beginning to branch his career out.

British newspaper The Guardian have word on another project the young star has attached himself too. The movie is titled JOURNEY and it will see him play the true life figure of a young renowned photographer Dan Eldon, who was stoned to death by a mob in Mogadishu in 1993, aged just 22. He he left behind a series of journals and photographs of his time in Somalia which have captivated artists and activists around the world.

Apparently big stars like Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Ryan Phillipe and Joaquin Pheonix have lobbied for the part in the past but it's not until the boy's mother sat down with Daniel Radcliffe did she feel like she had found the ...

Not the most reliable source for information but this news seems to fit nicely. The Sunday Times here in the U.K. are reporting that BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen has been persuaded by Steven Spielberg to accept a part in THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7, a movie fighting it out with his LINCOLN biopic to be the legendary director's next film after INDIANA JONES IV.

The role he is up for is that of Abbie Hoffman, a self-identified Jewish Road Warrior and social-political activist who became a fugitive of the law following a conviction for cocaine dealing. He was arrested and tried for conspiracy and inciting to riot as a result of his role in protests that led to violent confrontations with police during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, with other individuals who became known collectively as the Chicago Seven.

Spielberg's movie based on an Aaron Sorkin screenplay (A FEW GOOD MEN, CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR) will follow the events of the trial and before the strike it was talked about as having a March start date.

Spielberg is said to have put down a $6 million offer for the British actor who won great acclaim for his BORAT character and someone ...

Now that Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have put EXTRAS to bed there's going to be much talk about what the pair will do next.

Gervais has recently wrapped filming the lead on GHOST TOWN, a supernatural comedy from David Koepp. He's also co-written and will co-direct THIS SIDE OF TRUTH with Matthew Robinson next year.

With Merchant's absence from these projects one might have thought the partnership may have been moving in different directions.

Thankfully that's not the case as Gervais told BBC Five Live that he and Merchant will soon be working together on a film:
"It's about a group of twentysomethings in the 1970s in a small town where the sexual revolution didn't hit. They all basically get married and live next door to their mums. It's about whether or not they can escape."
Gervais hinted that the movie would veer more towards the dramatic.

I love THE OFFICE (both versions) and EXTRAS has certainly had its moments. As funny as the US OFFICE is, for me it doesn't pack the dramatic punch of the BBC original. Gervais and Merchant are masters at weaving together comedy and drama and them working on a movie can only be good for the UK film ...
