It's that time again folks, the cinematic trawler boats are back from their many nations across the globe and they're bulging with the great, the good, and the bizarre from the world's finest filmmakers. So the London Film Festival is beginning the lengthy process of screening this stuff to some of us lucky scribes.

I've long been a fan of this particular film festival because it forgoes the arrogant exclusivity of it's global cousins and focuses simply on getting great films to ordinary people. There's no awards, not too many celebs, and plenty of tickets for ordinary folks. That's what film is about.

I have to say that already, just a few films into the odyssey, I've spotted something that epitomises my love for the festival: WE LIVE IN PUBLIC.

It's a documentary (already lauded at Sundance) about internet pioneer Josh Harris. Seeing the massive future that the internet had to offer, he created a company called Jupiter to gather data on the business potential of this ground-breaking development. Rapidly hyped by Wall Street, Harris saw his wealth inflated with the rest of the dot-com bubble. But far from squandering his cash, he spent it on the most insane social experiments you'll ever ...

What goes on three miles north of a small Swedish town called Molkom? Well, it's a rural area in lush countryside so you'd expect the usual mix of hunting, nature walks, sightseeing and so on, plus maybe a decent sized logging industry. But in actual fact there is a large hippie commune called Angsbacka. Labelled a 21st century playground for adults, the sprawling space opens its gates of thousands of international international visitors, including two British filmmakers, to spread their lifestyle.

The film follows a hand-picked group of festival-goers as they engage with one another in 'sharing groups', get roasted in a pitch black sauna while a shamen purifies their spirits, indulge in some tantric sex, fight one another user the power of their auras and, of course, hug some trees. This festival is the perfect subject for an entertaining documentary, and debut directors Robert Cannan and Corinna McFarlane really make the most of it.

The first thing to note is that group dynamic they pull together works perfectly. They have a thinker, an arrogant exhibitionist, a troubled soul, an archetypal hippie (who used to be a goatherd) and, the icing on the cake, a cynical Australian who unwittingly ends up at ...

At first glance, AMERICAN TEEN seems to be as simple as its title. It's a documentary about average teenagers from a small town in Indiana. A camera crew follows a selection of kids as they go through the trials and tribulations that make up life in High School. According to director Nanette Burstein, the idea is that making a documentary rather would provide "all of the complexities and depth of real people that are often lacking in teen fictional movies."

This whet my appetite for the film because, frankly, I'm damn tired of the format of American teen movies and as a Brit I was pretty keen to see how the reality matched the fiction. However, to my utter distress, that reality was steadily chipped away as the 'documentary' slowly declined into a miserably obvious attempt to shove this handpicked selection of teens into the exact same stereotype spouted by Burstein's fiction filmmaker counterparts.

As far as I am concerned, this instantly stops it from being a documentary. Using 'real people' doesn't make it true to real life, actors are real people too after all... except Tom Cruise, he's a monkey inhabited by the spirit of a space alien or something. I ...

Released to coincide with the cinema bow of Brian Singer’s VALKYRIE, writer/Director Jan-Pierre Isbouts’ OPERATION VALKYRIE: THE STAUFFENBERG PLOT TO KILL HITLER arrives on DVD- no doubt seeking to bask in the reflected glory of Tom Cruise and Co. The documentary is a composite of re-enactments, computer animation, personal footage, current interviews and archive footage to tell the story of the infamous conspiracy to kill Hitler.

I thought it prudent to go and see Singer’s filmic account before embarking on what initially looked an exciting documentary telling the same, now familiar story of Colonel Von Stauffenberg’s failed attempt to kill Hitler. I’m fully aware now that only a small minority of people don’t know the story- considering the renewed media attention afforded it, so I wont bore you with the sordid details.

Now, as much as I enjoyed Singer’s attempt (and 1994’s superior STAUFFENBERG) there is part of me that will always be attracted to my Sunday morning History Channel fix. Documentaries really do fire my engine: the twin sisters of pathos and Hollywood stylistics often sour the facts, so whenever a factual account becomes available I feel immediately compelled to seek it out.

It’s a shame then that OPERATION VALKYRIE attempts to ...

Yes that movie really does have an * in it's title.

BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER is a in-competition documentary playing at the Sundance Film Festival from director Christopher Bell and it's a look at how the mammoth Gods of the 1980s like Rambo, Conan and Hulk Hogan inspired himself and his brothers to life weights, get ripped and become wrestlers.

Of course when the scandals of performance-enhancing drugs came (in particular the Vince McMahon trial of 1992) the reputations of these personalities soon went sour.

Terry Groth of Sundance describes the doc as combining
"crisp editing of hilarious archival footage with priceless family revelations as well as interviews with congressman, professional athletes, medical experts and everyday gym rats... Bell stays away from preconceptions and stereotypes and digs deeper to find the truth and concoct a fascinating, humorous and poignant profile of one of the side effects of being American."
A really smart tagline "Is it still cheating if everyone's doing it?" and a really interesting idea for a documentary, I'm hopeful this one performs well at Sundance and can secure some kind of distribution deal because in the wake of the Chris Benoit tragedy, Eddie Guerrero, Athlete Marion Jones in recent years... it's a subject that ...

This critically acclaimed documentary charts the fortunes of five young footballer freestylers who blag a flight to the USA and set off to busk their way across America in search of their idol of Diego Maradonna.

Having struggled at the box office this superlative feature will be looking for some success with DVD sales, and it more than deserves it. This is a travel tale that simply oozes sincerity, it refuses to be sucked into the usual contrived twists and turns of your standard road-trip film, and provides more than its fair share of original, funny and moving moments.

In the Hands of the Gods comes complete with plenty of awesome freestyling scenes, but even if that scene isn't for you there is much much more, for this is a film with hidden depths beyond it's shiny sport-related veneer. The group of lads are from a mixture of backgrounds, and are tied together only by the shared love of freestyling, and of course through their idol Maradonna. The dynamic between them creates the heart of the film, with each one of the boys emanating their own character and making their own decisions which takes the film down surprising and sometimes painful routes ...

There's a mega controversial documentary ready to premiere at Sundance next week from Morgan Spurlock, the guy who damn nearly killed himself eating nothing but MacDonald's for 30 full days on the documentary SUPER SIZE ME.

It's titled WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OSAMA BIN LADEN and it literally see's Spurlock attempting to do what the U.S. Government has yet been able to do despite years of trying and that's find the America's third most wanted man... Osama Bin Laden.

Ever since the film's Director of Photography (Daniel Marricone) claimed that Spurlock “definitely got the holy grail" and the Weinsteins paid big bucks for the movie's rights to give it a big theatrical release, people have been anxiously awaiting to here whether Spurlock actually did the unthinkable.

Did he really find Osama?

Well Slash Film have heard by e-mail from a reader in Utah who claims to have seen the film. Here's what he said and of course big potential spoilers below...
“At the end of the movie, he is about to go into the Tribal Area of Pakistan, where a huge sign says no outsiders allowed, you will be shot. He thinks about his kid and decided to turn around.

It’s a funny movie, and ...

Martin Scorsese is at it again. This is now the 8TH movie he has attached his name to since his last movie THE DEPARTED opened this time last year.

Variety say Scorsese will direct an untitled documentary on the life of former Beatles man George Harrison, which has the blessing of his widower who is also on board as one of the producers. Harrison lost his battle with lung cancer six years ago.

It's said the project is going to be a lengthy one and that it might be a couple of years before we see it in theatres, with early production work to begin later this year.

The Harrison Estate has allowed Scorsese unprecedented access to the family archives and has lined up interviews with people who were involved with the man through his life. The documentary will cover not only his time in The Beatles but also his later life as a media mogul and film producer.

Scorsese has previously directed documentaries on Bob Dylan and most recently The Rolling Stones. I would expect that he will work on a feature movie at the same time as this documentary but what movie exactly is another question entirely.

I really don't think he can ...

'In The Hands of the Gods' is an amazing film, I can't put it any more clearly than that. It's not going to be a huge release, and is never likely to be a big box office hit, but it deserves recognition. The film charts the true story of five young, British freestyle footballers [soccer players to our American friends] who blag a flight to New York and set out with no money and no real plan across the Americas to Argentina in the hope of meeting their hero, Diego Maradona. (Oh, and for those who don't know, football freestyling is performing a series of choreographed tricks on the ball, and let me tell you it really takes some skill!)

The film is a first-rate road trip tale, which meets all the criteria you'd want, but avoids the pitfalls often blundered into by its Hollywood peers. And it is shot as a documentary, which gives the film a real edge. The group of lads, Danny, Jeremy, Woody, Sam and Mikey, come from a variety of backgrounds and have all struggled with various aspects of their lives, and it is this dynamic between them which forms the pulsing heart of the film. ...
