"Tony Scott's The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (Columbia, 6.12) , which I saw last night, is an unquestionably better film -- more rousing and flavorful, zippier and craftier -- than the 1974 Joseph Sargent original"
says Jeff Wells in the opening paragraph of his very favoursome review of the soon to be released summer actioner starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, a big budget Hollywood remake of a semi-classic.

Indeed, if it wasn't for the fact that it was Wells reviewing, a critic I'm more than happy to trust my £6.80 with, I would have clicked away at disgust. But still Jeff, an "unquestionably better film?". Are you serious, because that's not the impression I'm getting from everything I have seen so far.

Don't you like the original movie, it didn't need the Tony Scott explosions to generate tension or interest?

"The New York subway-kidnap hostage thriller has more intricate plotting than the '74 film, richer characterizations of the top MTA guy (Denzel Washington in the old Walter Matthau role) and top-dog hostage-taking badass (John Travolta in the Robert Shaw role) and a slew of supporting performances across the board that are much more vivid and interesting than those from the class of '74, and at the same time less broad and farcical".
Yeah but ...

David Cronenberg was chatting to the Toronto Star this week when he revealed that his next movie, the adaptation of Robert Ludlum's non-Bourne thriller The Matarese Circle which is set to film this year with Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington in the leading roles is going through a page one re-write.

According to Cronenberg, the draft handed in by 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt was not to the liking of the studio or indeed Cronenberg himself, so he has taken it upon himself to write it.

He also explained he is writing his script with the two Hollywood icons in mind...
"Usually when I write, I don't visualize the characters, because I want them to have a life of their own, but in this case I am writing it specifically for these two actors. Tom and I get along very well. I was at his house in L.A. a couple of weeks ago, and he's very excited."
Well it sucks about Brandt and Haas because they are good guys and I've enjoyed their scripts to date but Cronenberg always has a very distinct and personal vision behind each and every one of his projects. And there is no-one better ...

I try and ignore what Variety say when they discuss Tom Cruise and his supposedly next picture as both his Interpol thriller THE TOURIST (co-starring Charlize Theron) and his summer blockbuster THE MATARESE CIRCLE (w/Denzel Washington, directed by David Cronenberg, based on Robert Ludlum's novel) both have firm start dates this year.

As far as we are concerned, those are his next two films.

So when Variety have a story saying THE 28TH AMENDMENT "has emerged as a strong contender to be one of Tom Cruise's next star vehicles", I presume they are simply juicing up a story to grab our attention.

Because if Cruise is still attached to this Warner Bros. thriller (which I don't think he is), then it certainly won't be his next film. Or his one after that.

Anyway, the trades mention that German born director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (sounds like a character out of Tarantino's next movie) has become attached to the thriller. He is in talks to direct what would be his first movie since THE LIVES OF OTHERS won the Best Foreign Picture Academy Award in 2006.

But as I say it probably won't star Cruise. Back in May last year, we heard THE 28TH AMENDMENT was setup for Phillip ...

The thing with Tony Scott is that I rarely like the trailers for his movies, they very seldom do an awful lot for me but by the time it comes to the big dance and I pay my hard earned cash to see his flicks, I always find that I've had a good time with them.

They entertain me. The simplicity of his setups and his ambitions to make good old fashioned genre efforts make for a watchable two hours.

But having said all that, THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 is different. It's different because I've seen with my own eyes how good this story can be. The original 1974 movie is a fabolous thriller from THE decade of thrillers. The great Robert Shaw plays one of the great smart and sly screen villains, who thinks he is better than simply a train robbing terroist. Like Alan Rickman in DIE HARD, he thinks because he talks with a middle-class accent he is better than the average crook but of course we know he's not.

I watch the trailer for this Summer's remake and I don't wanna see John Travolta playing his stock bad guy we have seen so much of in the last ...

Another huge story to hit the trades tonight!

Variety say Tom Cruise is in talks to join the already cast Denzel Washington in THE MATARESE CIRLCE, the Robert Ludlum (BOURNE series) thriller that David Cronenberg will make next.

Do I really need to say anymore, surely your sold already?

The MGM thriller which will go into production later this year will find Cruise and Washington as bitter enemy spies who come together after two decades of trying to kill each other in order to stop the powerful Matarese group in root of a conspiracy.

WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas adapted Ludlum's novel for screen, contemporising Ludlum's Cold-War setting.

The movie should be out next year after Cruise has remade THE TOURIST, a thriller over at Spyglass which sees him co-star with Charlize Theron.

Coming off the historical thriller VALKYRIE, Cruise is dismissing my advice of going the comedy route (which worked with TROPIC THUNDER) and hopes to win the hearts of fans in this genre once again.

Cronenberg, always seen as an Indie film-maker whose only real attempt at a commercial movie was A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE a few years ago, will direct his first blockbuster. And how I can't wait ...

I enjoyed INSIDE MAN quite a bit, probably Spike Lee's most relaxed and entertaining movie he has yet made. A clever thriller, a nod to the best of the heist movies of the 70's and the news that the sequel is still forthcoming is very exciting for me.

Lee who decided against shooting original writer Russell Gerwitz's first draft two years ago to make MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, updated MTV on what was happening with INSIDE MAN 2, letting us know that the previously discussed plot that saw Clive Owen conducting a diamond heist in New York has since been changed.

Though Lee won't tell us what to. He tells the site that HOTEL RWANDA screenwriter Terry George (who took over from Russell Gertwitz) has only just completed the first act of the script...
“I got an email from Terry George yesterday,” Lee told us. “He just finished—he’s at the end of the first act.”
Lee also lets us know that not only will stars Denzel Washington and Clive Owen be back but also Jodie Foster and Chiwetel Eijofor, two of the prominent supporting characters from the original.

And when will it start filming?
“If the script is up to snuff, we’ll be shooting it,” he ...

I guess if your reading this now, I chose to publish it. Or you have hacked into Obsessed With Film and are reading my private drafts, whatever. Just don't delete my slowly being drafted Top Ten of 2008 article!

The Hollywood Reporter say the cuter than cute Mila Kunis (the lovely receptionist from FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL) has joined THE BOOK OF ELI, the soon to be filming Denzel Washington thriller which marks the first movie from The Hughes Brothers (FROM HELL) in seven years.

Anthony Peckham (DON'T SAY A WORD) has recently been re-drafting rookie scribe Gary Whitta's original screenplay.

The movie finds Washington as a lone hero who must fight his way across the wasteland of a near-future America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity. Kunis will play Solara, a character whose true allegions we can never be sure of.

Shooting begins February in New Mexico. Joel Silver is producing for Alcon Entertainment, Warner Bros. and Summit ...

David Cronenberg's recent move into psychological character piece thrillers with the excellent HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES has seen him enter talks with MGM for their high profile thriller THE MATARESE CIRCLE.

Adapted from a Non-BOURNE Robert Ludlum novel, the movie has Denzel Washington set to star in the two lead picture.

The movie set against the backdrop of the Cold War follows one American and one Soviet who must team together in order to stop a plot to topple the world's governments. Washington will play the American and last month I suggested Viggo Mortensen for the Russian.

The suggestion very much still stands, though one wonders if Mortensen would go to that well with Cronenberg again, even if it did win him an Oscar nom last time around.

Adapted by the ever busy writers of WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA, the film will begin shooting in the Spring and could be Cronenberg's most commercial vehicle yet.

From the outside looking in, I would guess that Tom Cruise and his closest pals and advises have been discussing over the last few weeks and aggressively pursuing what his next project could be.

We've heard much about the potential Ben Stiller comedy, another Mission Impossible yarn, we've heard this and that but this one seems to be a real leading contender.

The movie is The 28th Amendment and if talks go well it will see him play the U.S. President that discovers his country is actually being controlled by a Denzel Washington led super secret organization who kills everyone that gets in their way!

It will be directed by Aussie director Phillip Noyce (who helmed Washington in the late 90's thriller The Bone Collector) and will mark the first on screen pairing of Cruise and Denzel...

Ironically, Cruise has been advised to play a U.S. President when he himself is probably at the lowest point of his public relations image.

The only bad news I guess about the project is that it comes from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who are spreading their seed everywhere right now but to give the devils their due, I loved what they did with Mission Impossible III for ...

When Steven Spielberg released The Color Purple in 1985, the film seemed revolutionary despite its shiny, well-lit shots and feel-good messages. Here was a film that attempted to portray the struggles of the poor black South during Depression-era America. Looking past the Spielbergian camera angles and tracking shots, one could easily see the simmering rage that fueled and informed the writing and performances in that film. Most notable was a young Oprah Winfrey, just rising to fame on television, as the oppressed Sofia. That film did, in fact, inspire Winfrey to begin her twenty year crusade to publicize and encourage black issues throughout the media.

And so it came to be that her production company, Harpo Films, has released yet another Color Purple clone called The Great Debaters.

THE FILM

Depression-era America is one rife with colorful cinematic possibilities. The stories of this generation, full of dramatic struggles for survival and underdog pluck and ingenuity, continue to fire the imagination ...

As Universal, Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon ponder over the future of the Bourne franchise, veteran producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Weschler are circling another one of Robert Ludlum's novels around Hollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter say they have convinced Denzel Washington to star in an adaptation of the best-seller The Matarese Circle, starring as one of two leads.

Washington would play Scofield, the American secret agent who along with a Russian agent is given an assignment to take down a mysterious group of killers known as the Matarese - however the twist is that both agents are resposnible for killing someone close to the other.

The book will be adapted by that constantly in work writing duo Derek Haas & Michel Brandt (3:10 to Yuma, Wanted).

Sounds cool, I'm actually quite surprised it's taken this long for another Ludlum novel to actually be put into motion after the success of the Bourne series.

Because of my absolute ignorance of 30-40 something Russian actors, I'm gonna say why not cast Viggo Mortensen for the Russian part? He felt more Russian than some Russians in Eastern Promises!

Sometimes remakes get me excited. It's rare, very rare actually but once in a while there will be a movie with the right cast, crew and reasoning to really get my juices flowing.

James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma carried that feeling last year as we anticipated that movie (and it was awesome) and now Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 is working it's magic on me too.

We already know that Denzel Washington will star as the New York transit cop who deals with a hostage situation as a subway train gets held for ransom by terrorists (basically it's his role from Inside Man again).

John Travolta (in his role from Swordfish but hopefully with more realism) plays the leader of the terrorist group, a part that Robert Shaw made his own in the 70's.

Now Variety carry word that Tony Soprano himself - James Gandolfini will play the Mayor of New York who is under pressure from all sides to cut a deal with the terrorists. It will be the third time he has appeared for Scott after roles in True Romance and Crimson Tide...

With the climate the world is in from threats of terroism reciding seemingly around every corner, ...

[rating: 4]

There was a nagging sense early on in The Great Debaters - Denzel Washington’s new period drama directorial debut - that I had witnessed this sort of racial, educational inspiring, triumph-against-all-odds genre piece many times before.

After all it’s been barely 13 years since Michelle Pfeiffer donned a black leather jacket and enrolled herself to teach in a tough urban establishment in Dangerous Minds and only 10 years since Samuel L Jackson lost his temper as a dedicated science instructor in 187 (well perhaps that’s not exactly triumphing against all odds nor inspiring for that matter).

Then there have been other tense period racial dramas such as Spielberg’s The Color Purple and Alan Parker’s Missispi Burning. And we have all been ‘inspired’ till death with the unhinged teaching styles of Sidney Poitier in To Sir, With Love, Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society, Sir John Mills in It's Great To Be Young ...
