Has star power won in Hollywood again?

Back in October, we reported that Brad Pitt had signed on to star in MONEYBALL, an adaptation of the true life story of Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane, who assembled a contending baseball club on a small budget by employing a sophisticated computer-based analysis to draft players.

Back then it was to be directed by David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) but now comes word from Variety that Stephen Soderbergh has entered talks for the project.

Has Pitt forced Frankel off the film so he can once again work with his director on the OCEAN'S movies?

Steve Zaillian (AMERICAN GANGSTER, SCHLINDER'S LIST) has adapted Michael Lewis book for Columbia.

Presumably Pitt will play the coach and it's one of the more conventional projects the actor has signed himself too recently but it does continue his new desire to only work with the top directors in the industry (Fincher, Tarantino, Malick, Coens).

The movie will be Soderbergh's next after his ambitious rock opera CLEO (about Anthony and Cleoptra) fell apart after star Hugh Jackman bailed on the Egyptian epic.

I predicted he did so because of the failure of AUSTRALIA and for his desire to not take a risk as his next ...

Columbia Pictures have hired Steve Zaillian to adapt Michael Lewis’ nonfiction bestseller MONEYBALL: THE ART OF WINNING AN UNFAIR GAME, with David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) set to direct.

The project, about Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane, who assembled a contending baseball club on a small budget by employing a sophisticated computer-based analysis to draft players... is being setup as a potential starring vehicle for Brad Pitt.

The novel was first optioned in 2004 by Sony, set out to showcase that the general image of baseball insiders (agents, managers, scouts, coaches) has been flawed and highly subjective. Even when looking at batting averages, stolen bases etc... it still couldn't compare to Beane's computer system.

The project is just one of many on Brad Pitt's slate who can next be seen in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, opening in December. After that, he can be seen next year in THE TREE OF LIFE for Terrence Malick.. followed by Quentin Tarantino's new film which should be ready for Cannes.

I better watch what I say here after yesterday's shenanigans. I wouldn't want to offend any Jennifer Aniston fans out there again.

After half a year delay because of Owen Wilson's personal problems, production will finally begin March 10th on MARLEY & ME - 20th Century Fox's fictional comedy movie based around John Grogan's memoirs of life living with his bad dog. Awwww.

The movie version will follow Aniston & Wilson as a couple that adopts a dog to give parenthood a trial run before finding out that the mischievous pooch is a lot more than they bargained for.

David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) directs and Academy Award winner Alan Arkin co-stars.
