That Natalie Portman ballerina flick which I was actually quite interested in before today (honestly, I was!) because of it's intriguing Polanski/Roeg/Shyamalan styled psychological theme and it's man behind the helm (The Wrestler's Darren Aronofsky), has now become a must-see, first in line, opening night picture.

My jaw has hit the floor, and seriously hasn't returned to it's natural place ever since I read Carson Reeves lead-in to his script review of Black Swan (written by Mark Heyman and dated March 25th 2009) at the the excellent Script Shadow...
Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis have sex.

Yeah. You read that right. And not just nice sweet innocent sex either. We're talking ecstasy-induced hungry aggressive angry sex.
Prediction: Black Swan will soon find a distributor after the internet reaction to this (currently, this is a full on Indie feature).

Portman plays the lead, a New York City Ballet dancer who is is tormented by a rival (Kunis) who may or may not be a figment of her own imagination and who is vying for the same part in a production of Swan Lake. Reeves calls Black Swan "a very intriguing story with a quiet slow burn". The screenplay is a purposefully fat 131 pages in length and ...

Darren Aronofsky seems firmly committed to making his supernatural ballerina thriller Black Swan as his post-The Wrestler movie, as The Hollywood Reporter say hottie Mila Kunis has joined the cast as Lilly, the film's antagonist.

Last month Natalie Portman, an actress Aronofsky has been circling for years now became attached to play the lead, as the New York City Ballet dancer who is is tormented by a rival (Kunis) who may or may not be a figment of her imagination. Hopefully this isn't a Sixth Sense situation and the trades haven't blown the load on the third act plot twist.

Swan is set to begin shooting in the fall in New York if a financier can be found. Universal owned the property back in 2007 but later pulled out. Aronofksy's Protozoa Pictures is producing with Mike Medavoy's Phoenix Pictures, and it's expected that Fox Searchlight could distribute.

MGM recently moved down a gear on Robocop IV that Darren Aronofsky had been busy developing for nearly 12 months, pushing back it's release date from 2010 to the summer of 2011. But with every black cloud there is a silver lining somewhere, as the delay has allowed The Wrestler director to enjoy a brief window of opportunity to resurrect a long gestered project.

First announced in January 2007 as a Universal picture before they balked at the project, the supernatural thriller Black Swan has just attached Natalie Portman for the lead role, an actress Aronofsky has long courted.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he seems focused on this being his next movie if he can find studio backing before the end of the year.

Described as carrying the same tone as The Others, Aronofsky's movie follows Portman...
"as a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions".
Which makes me wonder if I had ever paid to see a movie about a ballerina before, I really don't think I have.

John McLaughlin's script has ...

THE WRESTLER is a movie I've waited a very long time to see. A movie I always knew or rather hoped could be made given the right circumstances and well, just some plain big mighty balls. A movie where the desire to showcase the "fake" sport for how it truly is wins precedent over what might be the most commercially viable aspect of the "cartoon" world of professional wrestling. A movie I would get so ill-tempted about not seeing when the READY TO RUMBLE'S and NACHO LIBRE'S would clog up our cinema screens, playing to the populist and ignorant image of the sport that gives wrestling such a bad name.

I dare say it's also the movie that thousands of wrestlers who have lived this crazy lifestyle over the years have been desperate to see get made. THE WRESTLER is a testament to each and every guy or girl who has stepped into that squared circle, put on those tights and battered up their body, damn nearly killed themselves night after night to put on a show for all together the loyalest and most fickle crowd in entertainment and then get asked why it is they do what they do by ...

Darren Aronofsky's critically heralded drama THE WRESTLER feels way smaller than I thought it would but in a way that's a big compliment because with Mickey Rourke's knockout performance, that brilliant piece of music from Bruce Springsteen, Darren Aronofsky storytelling and an authentic realised dedication to getting this sport right, I'm totally hooked for seeing this.

I always knew wrestling was a sport so fascinating that it had at least one good movie about it just begging to be made. Has Aronofsky, a man who similarly I always thought had a good movie in him (I hated THE FOUNTAIN and never really warmed to REQUIEM FOR A DREAM), finally given me what I have wanted to see for years, a straight, good old fashioned narrative movie with no gimmicks.

I can't wait to see this.

Paramount Pictures have pumped millions of dollars on several different writers and two years of developing THE FIGHTER but this weekend all signs point to the studio shelving the project.

Two years ago Mark Wahlberg signed up to star as "Irish" Mickey Ward and Matt Damon his half brother/boxing trainer. Damon was then replaced in September 2007 by Brad Pitt and Darren Aronofsky's project seemed ready to go. Then Aronofsky went on to direct the similar sounding THE WRESTLER and now several re-writes later the film looks done.

This weekend The Playlist claims that Brad Pitt has dropped the film to work on other material and now Mark Wahlberg tells Coming Soon that he is meeting with Aronofsky TODAY for what could be the death meeting of THE FIGHTER...
I get up everyday at 5:00AM to train for a movie that might not even happen. It's depressing...I’m so focused on “Fighter” and that’s not even happening so it’s all depressing. I’m just looking for the next thing. I’m always looking for the next thing. I’ve done three or four movies since I’ve been training for Fighter,” Wahlberg said, later adding: “They finally got the green light, now we have to figure out the ...

Fox Searchlight have given THE WRESTLER a December 19th U.S. release date just days after picking up the most hotly talked about movie coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Darren Aronofsky's movie starring a "revitalised" Mickey Rourke is expected to start small then grow wider as the weeks go on, giving it every opportunity to be talked about for Academy Award nominations.

Hopefully some trailers, posters and general marketing are only weeks ago because those of us who weren't at the TIFF haven't really seen much from this exciting release.

Updated:

The Wrestler is getting a ton of press attention and user comments right now and it's just fantastic to see, I have been fully behind this picture from day one... even if I thought Aronofsky's The Fountain was one of the worst films the year it came out.

I anticipated this being a straight Darren Aronofsky movie, something he badly needed after the mess of his last film and though I can't tell if it is indeed that until I see the final picture, I will say I'm incredibly excited to see this talented director back on track.

The breaking news tonight at Variety is that Fox Searchlight have made the first big acquisition of the festival by spending $4 million on the U.S. distribution rights for The Wrestler. They won what is being described as an "intense all night bidding war" after the incredible buzz the movie received after it's screenings.

A late December release which will gradually grow wider through January with a big late Academy Award marketing campaign is expected. Let's hope this one can find an audience.

A movie titled The Wrestler is an Oscar contender?

And from Darren Aronofsky no less, whose last movie The Fountain was booed ...

The legendary Bruce Springsteen has written and recorded a song that will play during the end credits of Darren Aronofsky's small time drama The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.

Aronofsky writes on his blog that the tune is a "beautiful... wonderful acoustic piece".
“Makes me choke up every time i hear it,” Aronofsky writes on his blog. “He really captured the spirit of the film and Mickey [Rourke]’s character in the piece.”
Springsteen has already recorded two songs for film (if there is more I have forgotten about, do tell me!), both of which nearly make me choke up everytime. His wonderful song "Streets of Philadelphia" which won him a 1993 Academy Award for "Best Original Song" for Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia.

And the amazing song "Secret Garden" for Jerry Maguire...

The Wrestler which should do for the sport what Rocky did for boxing, is closing the Venice Film Festival before moving to the Toronto Festival at the end of this week. The movie is currently seeking a distributor but it's expected to sell well and he won't have the same kind of trouble he had with The Fountain.

Hopefully we will get a trailer soon after the movie is sold.

So it's official, Robocop will be added to the recent sequels of other 80's action classics Rambo, Die Hard and Terminator in making it's way back to the big screen.

But this one, has a MEGA talented (though I have yet to like one of his films fully) director behind the helm and a very good screenwriter also.

Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) is confirmed to direct, David Self (The Wolf Man, Road to Perdition) will scribe.

MGM have put aside $100 million for the film, which has a Summer 2010 release.

The movie will be set in Los Angeles 20 years after the suspension of the original RoboCop program in New Detroit.
"Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."
Aronofsky got further than he did trying to reinvent the Batman franchise. Now here is his chance to show the world what we can do with a Blockbuster. Is he the next Chris Nolan?

Buried, almost hidden away in that article from The Hollywood Reporter discussing the Red Dawn remake comes this quote which completely slipped me by but thankfully both AICN and /Film picked up on it...
Parent and MGM chairman and CEO Harry Sloan announced the "Red Dawn" remake -- along with a big-budget rebuild of "RoboCop," which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss -- in May at the Festival de Cannes.
Has Aronofsky been taking crack or is he hurt over the critics totally bashing his last movie The Fountain?

He is already doing a movie titled The Wrestler which we expected him to follow-up with a movie about a boxer titled The Fighter... and now he is eyeing a RoboCop remake? When did he go all mainstream on us?

You may remember at the turn of the Millennium, way before Christopher Nolan landed the Batman gig... a certain Darren Aronofsky had met with Warner Bros. and handed in his very different, dark and grim take of Batman which he adapted from Frank Miller's Year One. It was a pretty obvious reaction to Batman & Robin - a movie so filled with McDonald's colours that he went in a ...

Confirmation came yesterday that Marisa Tomei will indeed play the wife to Mickey Rourke's wrestler in Darren Aronofsky's next film about a ROCKY-like character who is enticed back into the ring after his doctor's advise him that one more match could be fatal.

And today we have some really cool footage from a wrestling arena, with Aronofsky directing Rourke to what looks to be the final moments of a bloody and violent match. Ouch is all I'm going to say!

Rourke looks to have the entrance music Welcome to the Jungle from Guns & Roses and for my money he makes an extremely convincing wrestler. Then again, as soon as he got the gig we all knew he would right?

My question is, when will we find out that this movie is actually an art film about a dying man and his 'coma' about his younger days when he was a wrestler?

So I ask again, what is he doing directing a mainstream movie about wrestling? And the word is he is still eyeing THE FIGHTER (his boxing biopic of "Irish" Mickey Ward) to direct straight after? Are we sure this is Aronofsky and not Rob Cohen?

Help me out here guys, when was the last time an art director made such a left turn so early in his career?

Here's lead Mickey Rourke, looking a little like Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and a hell of a lot like Diamond Dallas Page in preparation for the role no doubt. Beside him is famous wrestler Afa the Wild Samoan. Filming is currently under-way...

Also in the movie are said to be Maresi Tomei as Rourke's wife (who ...
