If you ever want to know what's happening with Ghostbusters III, just ask Dan Ackroyd. He is never one to shy away from telling you what's really going down with a franchise that is closest to his heart and it's comments like "at any second everything could blow up", which remind us that we've been here before with this series.

Not quite as far as getting a production team, a screenplay written (from the writers of The U.S. Office) AND importantly all the cast to agree on a return but still we've been close before. Ackroyd although optimistic about seeing the movie made this time is also a realist and knows it won't take much for it to all fall down again.

In an article from yesterday's L.A. Times, Ackroyd reveals that the potential "passing of the torch" movie could film this Winter and the actor forsees a new generation of FIVE ghostbusters with a female presence dropped in for good measure. He even decides to name drop former Charmed actress Alyssa Milano (who voiced a character in the upcoming video game) and Eliza Dushku as the two he would most like to see in the franchise.

Milano doesn't inspire me with much confidence but the ...

During a recent online chat, Dan Ackroyd claimed that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 could be reving up to shoot as early as this fall...
Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009.
Said script, as well all know by now, comes from the writers of THE OFFICE and the upcoming Harold Ramis biblical comedy THE YEAR ONE.

With those GHOSTBUSTERS anniversary Blu-Ray's and that new video game coming out in June... I think everyone expects the movie to be officially announced around then.

I really hope it does begin filming this year because a GHOSTBUSTERS movie that begins shooting after 2010, just sounds odd.

My girlfriend often says I'm the luckiest guy in the world, especially in the last few years where seemingly every geek property I ever fell in love with is making a return in one form or another.

Not only are we getting a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie with the original crew sounding like they are all might just be up for a return but we are also getting a cool as hell looking video game featuring the voices of Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson.

It's too bad they give a few lifeless line readings but hell, I would take this over using someone's elses voice or likeness. Can't wait to get hold of this...

The game is coming in June. Hopefully by then dare I say casting might be complete for GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

So it's official, Ghostbusters III is about to be scripted.

It's happening, just like I kept telling you guys it would.

Columbia Pictures have hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the co-executive producers on NBC's version of The Office to write an original script for the film that will have the intention of reuniting Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson for the first time since 1989's Ghostbusters II.

As well as writing the excellent U.S. version of The Office, the writing duo have also just wrote Year One, the biblical comedy which Harold Ramis himself recently helmed for Judd Apatow.

You can read the story in Variety!

Just this week Ackroyd had mentioned his desire to get Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and their gang involved in the picture in someway, something many fanboys have anticipated happening for about a year now. Could this new movie act as a farewell to the original cast and as a set-up to carrying on the franchise with Apatow's gang, which could well involve Rogen, Paul Rudd and presumably Steve Carrel, who of course just so happens to be the star of The Office.

Will Ivan Reitman, the helmer of Parts I and II and who last directed ...

Dan Ackroyd, usually the figurehead voice for the Ghost Busters team loves the much talked about rumblings of what a Judd Apatow directed Ghost Busters 3 would look like with Seth Rogen and his usual crew (presumably Rudd, Carell etc) starring.

And who knows, if Ackroyd is talking about it (and he would know, mentioning a script being written right now) maybe it's more than just rumblings...
Well, y’know, two sharp young writers are purported to be writing the sequel, the third movie now. If I could interest Seth [Rogen] and Judd [Apatow] to be part of it, that would be an absolute dream.
I've said it time and time again. Ghost Busters is a staple of mine and many of my generation's childhood, two (ok for some just one) precious films that we don't particularly want to see revisited. HOWEVER, revisited they will most certainly be, just like Back to the Future will be sooner rather than later.

The question is as to whether it will be a Stallone/Willis/Ford style return for the original cast or whether it will be new blood... or somewhere in the middle where it's a passing of the torch movie is where the big mystery lies.

Now, because Ghost ...

So there's a totally unfounded rumor online at Dread Central that Judd Apatow has not only convinced Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson to return for a third Ghost Busters movie some twenty years after the last picture but also that they would use the film to pass the torch to Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Romany Malco.

All four actors made up the core cast of The 40 Year Old Virgin and have since starred in many various Apatow projects.

But as with every Ghost Busters rumor of the last ten years, Bill Murray seems in no mood to do another of these pictures no matter how much money they throw at him.

Why would things be so different now?

Though I would say this. If Apatow could ever convince Ackroyd, Ramis & Murray to give up the rights to the series (and if anyone could, it would be Apatow) then I'm convinced he could make a great movie with his usual crew AS LONG as he didn't got the remake route.

For example, I would rather see Rogen as a new character, rather than trying to be Bill Murray.

And this kind of rumor story isn't particularly new. A ...
