God where do you begin with a story like this?

Australian actor Heath Ledger was found dead from a suspected overdose at his Manhatten Apartment at 2pm on Tuesday. He was just 28.

Sad, horrible, sickening news which I had to re-read four times before it sunk in. Ledger was an actor who was nowhere near at the peak of his talent, another tragic career cut way too short.

If there was one performance I was anticipating and constantly talking about to people who would care to listen it was his upcoming role as The Joker, possibly the biggest part any actor could land in a blockbuster movie. From the trailers and the prologue we have seen to the film, and the constant praise from those involved including Michael Caine, Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale... his performance was set to be legendary.

I called it a Lon Chaney like-triumph. The kind of role where you physically and mentally give yourself up to and create the kind of monster that we have never seen before but are soon and forever intended into our psyche. Karloff's Frankenstein, Legosi's Dracula and it was building up as if we were going to be talking about Ledger's Joker in ...

Those of you who've ventured to multiplexes to see I AM LEGEND will have had the fortune of seeing either the exclusive IMAX preview for THE DARK KNIGHT or its theatrical trailer. The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed this:-

This billboard features in the film and carries a 05-15-10 release date. Its presence is likely down to the film's screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who worked on a failed BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN project a few years ago.

We probably will see the end of mankind before a BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN movie as Warner Bros have bypassed that idea in favour of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film. Personally, I would love to see this "could've been" film - the idea of Christian Bale facing off against Superman (lets have someone who can actually act, sorry Brandon Routh and Tom Welling) is tantilising.

There were a myriad of unproduced Batman films in the late 90s and early 00s. When BATMAN & ROBIN crapped the bed the people behind the franchise began to think that maybe they should take things in another direction. I think these are all the projects that were under consideration, hit up Batman on Film for more info:-
BATMAN TRIUMPHANT - Joel Schumacher would've returned ...

The wait is over, the HD quality version of THAT trailer is now online and available for your viewing pleasure.

See it right HERE.

And that's not all folks. You wanna see that prologue don't you?

Well you can catch that below. Sadly no HD version of that just yet...

And that's still not it. We actually have yet another Joker poster for the movie...

I actually think that is my favourite poster so far, it's almost like a poster for a horror flick than a summer comic book blockbuster.

Thoughts on all the stuff above?

It really does feel like this movie is opening in the first week of January doesn't it? Here's requesting something of a cooling off period for now, as we try and digest all this new stuff before another dose of heavy marketing near July.

It was only a couple of weeks go I was moaning because I thought it was about time we had some official artwork and footage for next year's much anticipated second of probably three Christopher Nolan Batman movies, THE DARK KNIGHT.

Now we've had a full length trailer (although bootlegged), a prologue attached to I AM LEGEND, a domestic and international poster and now two more posters to feast our eyes on...

And a really cool and inventive one...

Is this heavy marketing all a bit soon?

The movie doesn't come out till the back end of July but we are sure being bombarded with stuff at the moment.

Really love the second poster. It's guaranteed to catch your eye in the movie theatre.

Word is the HD quality trailer will be up on Sunday HERE. Can't wait.

I'm so-so with this poster.

I love the themes of it and what it is trying to represent. The idea of Batman being behind bars and trapped within the confines of Gotham is a firm part of his mythos, but ya know I needed the logo and the title above to just be a tad bigger.

Still pretty cool colours though. It's another sure sign that they are changing the gold/yellow/black colour scheme of BATMAN BEGINS, into this very cold blue.

Here's the International Poster for the flick, which basically means the one that will be put up in the U.K...

Batman's suit just look so awesome from this view. Looks like the classic style costume, and this cover is something that is so reminiscint of a comic book issue.

Still Chicago at times doesn't feel like the Gotham I grew up reading. It did at times in BEGINS but others it just felt like Chicago. But I guess that's a small nitpick. Thankfully there's no Statue of Liberty like in BATMAN FOREVER!

A few years back, as the release of THE MATRIX RELOADED was imminent, a series of anime shorts were released to tie in with the film. Called THE ANIMATRIX, the project comprised of nine shorts that pushed us further into the crazy world created by The Wachowkis.

I can remember THE ANIMATRIX vividly, particularly seeing FINAL FLIGHT OF THE OSIRIS debuting on late night TV and even on a small screen, it blew me away. I had flirted with anime before but THE ANIMATRIX was what really pushed me head first into the genre.

Now, a similar trick is being tried with Batman.

A series of six anime shorts are in the pipeline and will get released under the name BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT prior to THE DARK KNIGHT's theatrical bow.

Already confirmed for the project are Hollywood writers Josh Olsen and David Goyer, THE PRESTIGE and THE DARK KNIGHT producer Jordan Goldberg; comic scribes Brian Azzarello and Greg Rucka; along with Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett who were involved in the superb BATMAN, SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE animated shows.

The animation will come courtesy of three of Japan's most popular animation production houses: Production I.G., Madhouse, and Studio 4°C.

Add to that the news from Twitch ...

So the question we have been asking for the last couple of weeks is will the THE DARK KNIGHT prologue (well really, the first 5-7 minutes of next year's film) which is attached to IMAX prints of I AM LEGEND, play in the U.K too?

This is an important question for us in the U.K. as the word is it won't get a HD quicktime release online, so the only other way in Britain we would be able to see it is if it were bootlegged online (which it will) with likely poor quality.

Here's Jett's take from Batman on Film, THE SITE on the Internet for the latest Batman movie news...
THE DARK KNIGHT PROLOGUE IMAX update. From what I can gather, if I AM LEGEND is playing in an IMAX theater, then you'll be able to see the prologue. That goes for the UK and Australia as well.
So then the next question for me is, what the hell I am going to do?

I've never been to an IMAX theatre. Come close on a few occasions on my travels around the world, but I've always been on vacation and never felt like seeing a movie (apart from GRINDHOUSE but that ...

So it's finally here. The first teaser poster for THE DARK KNIGHT.

I love how Nolan and Warner Brothers have chosen to market their film as if The Joker has vandalised everything.

This poster is simply delicious. We have the similar imagery of characters we know but transformed into a simple yet very cool and clever way.

This is so much better than just an average teaser poster logo. And those guys who have seen the six minutes of IMAX footage already?

There's three big things we are waiting to happen in the next few weeks...

A) Casting announcement for the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA.

B) Trailer for INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL which we promised for Thanksgiving, but it's not online as of yet.

C) Imax prologue for THE DARK KNIGHT which will be attached to I AM LEGEND.

Now this IMAX trailer will be bigger, louder and more explosive than anything you have seen before.

Whilst some of the biggest movies of 2009 have been in turmoil over the last few weeks because of behind-the-scenes problems, strike issues and the like, THE DARK KNIGHT's long shoot and pre-production ran pretty smoothly. Focus will soon turn to next summer's blockbuster offerings and before you know it, Batman fever will be everywhere.

Each little tidbit gets me more and more excited. Can't wait to see this prologue...

As much as I'm looking forward to seeing The Dark Knight I have to admit that Tim Burton's Batman and Jack Nicholson's madcap performance as the Joker will always have a special place in my heart.

Jack gave a rare interview to MTV to promote his latest flick The Bucket List and discussion turned to the new incarnation of the Joker.

So how does he feel about Heath Ledger playing the Clown Prince of Crime?
“I’m furious.”

“They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.

“[Warner Bros] kind of drove the franchise into the ground,” Nicholson added before saying he wouldn't see The Dark Knight.
Jack had some kind things to say about his Tim Burton, though.
“[He’s] a genius. He had the right take on it. That’s why I did the movie. [Burton is] one of the great moviemakers. I think the world of him.”
Jack is of course too old to play this part again but if you read Andrew Kevin Walker Batman vs. Superman script and picture Nicholson, Reeve, Keaton and Hackman in the lead roles then it's a pretty great sequel. It's a shame it wasn't written in 1992.

Jack can't be that ...

The New York Times caught up with actor Heath Ledger while filming in London. Ledger, who will star as the Joker in The Dark Knight, talked about just how draining it is to portray the Clown Prince of Crime.
“Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night, I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.”
The interviewer spotted something which Ledger had in his possession...
Here too was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school.
The Dark Knight will be opened July 18th, 2008.

In comic book lore, it took DC Comics 11 years to print a back-story and origin for their most popular villain The Joker, as printed in Detective Comics No. 168. For over a decade he terrified and thrilled children as a white clown faced, purple suit wearing mass murdering psychopath who seemingly had no rhyme, reason or method to his madness.

Of course in comic book films, it hasn't really worked that way with The Joker or any other major hero or villain. In Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie we started the flick from the point of view of Jack Napier and we witnessed a full character change from evil gangster to homicidal joker. Indeed, we learnt a far lot more about him than we did our masked hero.

One thing I believe many comic book films have missed out on in the past is the power of mystery and sometimes writers need to tell us EVERYTHING about a character, shows me that they don't have as much faith as they should in their storytelling. With some characters it's surely better to NOT know their origins, especially at first, as it makes them a far more creepy and terrifying prospect when an ...

UPDATED: Matt here,

It's just been confirmed that there will be a prologue for The Dark Knight attached to prints of I Am Legend in IMAX this December.

Which Christmas present I am looking forward to the most. This or that Blade Runner 5 Disc Special Edition DVD. I can't decide!

According to Brazilian site Omelete (via Batman on Film), this December's IMAX release of I Am Legend will feature a special 7 minute sneak preview of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. Makes sense since both are Warner Bros releases and some of the viral marketing for Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up has featured the phrase "See you in December".

The preview will allegedly act as a prologue to The Dark Knight and feature Heath Ledger's the Joker prominently. Perhaps it'll be an origin scene of some kind? It'd certainly be a good way to introduce this newer, non-Nicholson version of the character and would mean Nolan wouldn't have to waste time with an origin sequence in the actual film.

I Am Legend hits theatres and IMAX December 14th in the US and January 4th next year over here.

Here's a pic of Nolan directing a possible scene from the preview with a bloody ...

Well it's confirmed. Former Hollyoaks star Sarah Jayne Dunn who I can guarantee no-one outside the U.K. will have ever heard of, really does have a role in The Dark Knight.

The actress sounding rather elated, told Liverpool Daily Post (via Batman on Film) how it feels to be in her first ever blockbuster movie...
"I am so excited. The audition came up about three months ago and I was just made up that they would even see me. As with any audition you do it and then you have to not think about it. If you hear you hear, if you dont you dont. I assumed nothing had come of it because I didnt hear anything. Then I found out a couple of weeks ago and I just went: Omigod!

"I know that I am in it...I know that I am working with Eric Roberts...and that is as much as I know. They are being very secretive because they dont want leaks."

I would love to [work with Christian Bale as Batman]. God, if I got on set and Batman was there I would just wet myself."
Eric Roberts. Ah, that might reveal something then about her role and it probably won't be that ...

If you told me this time two years ago just after Batman Begins had wrapped I would have believed you. At one time it was certainly being suggested that the following two sequels to Batman Begins would be shot back to back, allowing for a larger scope and epic storyline which would revolve around The Joker and Harvey Dent's development.

At one time, I was actually convinced that we would see a Batman movie in the summer of 2008, then another one again the following year, which also seemed to be of the benefit of Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale who could then move on to other things because I'm afraid to say it guys... but they won't stay around doing this Batman gig forever.

When WB's annouced The Dark Knight for 2008 and mentioned no third movie start date then obviously that was not going to happen. The next Batman movie probably will have the same three year gap as this one, with the next movie not hitting theatres till 2011.

Although a source for Batman on Film, actually got word over the weekend that Batman 3 could be out by Christmas 2009. I would say there's a 95% chance that ...

Christian Bale and Russell Crowe have been doing the rounds for 3:10 to Yuma for quite a number of weeks now and one recurring theme is Bale claiming that Russell Crowe is going to be in The Dark Knight. Now, personally I think it's bullshit and it's just these two guys messing around with the web (I recall Bale doing it with Star Trek the other day) but every single interview I read now for Yuma brings up this type of quote.

This one is from Coming Soon...

CS: Can you talk about working on Batman right now?

Bale: Russell's going to be actually in the new Batman movie, which is a big surprise and I want to reveal it to everybody right now!

CS: Are you going to do "Justice League" after?

Bale: No.

Crowe: What about the Green Lantern?

Bale: No!

Could a cameo be in the offing for Crowe?

Nah not for my money. It's obvious these guys are just messing around, I mean just look at the next question Crowe pulls out of his bag, asking Bale whether he's going to be in The Green Lantern. Hilarious!

And yes it's a U.S. holiday, so news is very slow.

It's probably not at all newsworthy but Hollyoaks is a pretty popular soap here in the U.K, so this might interest them. And of course it's to do with Batman, so I should certainly mention this little story found over at This is Nottingham, via AICN.

They claim that 26 year old British Actress Sarah Dunn who was Mandy in Hollyoaks for over ten years, has been cast in next summer's blockbuster movie The Dark Knight. No word on the part but my guess would be it's probably a one-word or non speaking role but AICN actually suggest she might make a good Harley Quinn.

For those who don't know Harley Quinn is the Joker's female sidekick and something of a strange lover who was once the good psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel before she came under The Joker's spell. Although she might not be as voluptuous for the part as I would have liked (Brittany Murphy anyone?) she wouldn't be the worst looking for the role and at 26 is the perfect age.

I doubt she will be Quinn though, at least not in the Harley Quinn variety. She might just be her before she turns evil kind of thing.

I guess we'll see ...

The panel has passed, the dust has settled and all those who attended the Chicago Wizard World Convention yesterday are probably all back at home and tucked nicely into their beds. Are they dreaming about the footage they witnessed earlier in the day?

I know I would be.

Here's a report from a guy who attended the panel then sent this in to AICN. Beware there are mild spoilers until you reach a certain point where I have forced you to click further if you want to read it. This is a massive spoiler to the fate of one of the characters in the film but if you are at all familiar with the Batman universe either cinematically or in comic book lore, then you know this already.
Paul Levitz president and publisher of DC comics took the stage to thunderous applause, and introduced David Goyer, Jona Nolan, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, and Christian Bale, and then Chris Nolan himself! Oldman through Nolan all got standing ovations.

They did Q&A for about 45 mins, which was incredible, but having just left, I haven't let my mind sort it all out yet. Then, they showed the footage. Chris Nolan seemed really nervous about showing footage. ...
