First Mark Millar, and now Louis Letterier?

Both guys have mentioned Superman reboots, it looks like something is really going down over at Warner Bros. and it doesn't involve Bryan Singer who has probably been dumped on his ass after the less than impressive Superman Returns.

Speaking to a French media outlet, The Incredible Hulk director claims he has heard whispers that WB are considering rebooting the Superman franchise, or as he puts it "reinventing it".

No shit, they should have done that LAST time!

Confusion began earlier in the day when a couple of bloggers read the translation of his interview wrong, and claimed he said that he had held talks with Warner Bros. over directing the new movie himself. Thankfully that turned out to be mis-communication.

A couple of weeks back we heard Mark Millar mention that WB a "well known American action director" had called him up to team together and pitch a new project involving Supes to Warners. Letterier is only semi-known but he is most certainly an action director after cooking up The Transporter series and the recent Hulk movie. And of course he ain't American.
Whatever or whoever it is, I think the death nail has been hammered into Singer's ...

Inspired by what Marvel did with The Incredible Hulk and completely turned off by what Bryan Singer and his writing team did with Superman Returns... comic book writer Mark Millar (Wanted) is aiming to retcon the red, white and blue character giving him a refreshing restart if Warner Bros. agree to his planned pitch.

He also mentions that the superhero property which he is planning his big presentation to the studio, now has a director attached which he will reveal closer to Christmas time.

“Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century,” said Millar. “I’ve been planning this my entire life. I’ve got my director and producer set up, and it’ll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think. The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost [a good chunk of change], but in 2011 we’re hoping to restart it. Sadly I can’t say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.”
I don't think it's the worst idea at all. Let's forget Superman Returns ever happened ala Ang Lee's Hulk.

Knowing that his quotes to the Daily Record would spread like wildfire over the Internet, Millar was ...

Why might this news effect Superman: The Man of Steel and Justice League Mortal?
A federal judge here on Wednesday ruled that the heirs of Jerome Siegel — who 70 years ago sold the rights to the action hero he created with Joseph Shuster to Detective Comics for $130 — were entitled to claim a share of the United States copyright to the character. The ruling left intact Time Warner’s international rights to the character, which it has long owned through its DC Comics unit.
Well I can tell you why.

This new ruling means that the Siegel estate is likely to be owed some of the cut of the $200 million domestic taking of Superman Returns, making that film even more of a financial disappointment for Warner Bros who haven't been as enthusiast to go ahead with the sequel as they did for Christopher Nolan and their other big DC property.

This could also have an impact on the Justice League of America movie which will use the Superman character as one of it's main players.

You can read the whole article in THE NEW YORK TIMES HERE.

Some updates on Iron Man and Superman: The Man of Steel...

CONFIRMED: Bryan Singer IS back for Superman: The Man of Steel. That was true. He said this to Empire...
"I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it."
Ok that's cool. I do think Singer has a knock out Superman film in him and after what the guy did with X-Men 2, we know he is capable of making a much more epic and assured second film in a franchise...
"The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels...Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I’m going to wake them up!”
Unrelenting terror? Presuming that is a joke but comments like that do hint at ...

We've spoken many, many times about Superman Returns and my gross dislike of the film and my huge disappointment at the direction that Bryan Singer took with the picture after making several great movies, including two good comic book flicks with X-Men and X-Men 2.

But I've also always said that I'm not adverse to giving Singer another go. He has in the past talked about going "Wrath of Khan" on the movie and I would really like to see a darker Supes flick. Something that doesn't involve Lex Luthor for a change. Maybe something that doesn't heavily involve Lois Lane, especially if Kate Bosworth is playing the character again.

The future of Superman: The Man of Steel has been extremely uncertain with both Bryan Singer and Warner Bros. execs being far more interested in working on other projects. I mean the whole point of the JLA flick was to replace Superman sequel on the release schedule.

But the interest is finally back for the franchise. Here's IESB...
Ok, here's the big news, Robert has informed me that he has confirmed that yes, Bryan Singer is 100% on the sequel to his 2004 revamp Superman Returns. He has since confirmed this with studio sources ...

Warner Bros really are not good at making comic book films. In recent years the latest converts to Blu Ray have spent millions on developing tentpole movies based on the library of great DC Comics characters at their disposal, yet they have never really had that runaway, mega-hit - the type of hit that Tim Burton and Sam Raimi had with their first entries into the BATMAN and SPIDER-MAN franchises.

Sure, BATMAN BEGINS turned a domestic profit (only just), and SUPERMAN RETURNS may have had okay numbers (it's status as a "hit" is comparable to GODZILLA and ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES) but when you look at the cost of the film, and more importantly the fact that many at the studio put their reputations on the line for it then the word disappointment is an understatement. Let's not even mention CATWOMAN.

It should not be a surprise in the slightest that both the JUSTICE LEAGUE and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL are crumbling. At one time both these projects were jostling for a 2009 release and WB controversially chose to go ahead with JUSTICE LEAGUE based on the strength of the script (more on that later) and the lack of movement ...

It's mystifying to me that Warner Brothers haven't done more to secure Brandon Routh's signature for the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA movie, which we have to presume has fallen victim to a strike delay as we are still yet to hear of any official cast announcements.

Last summer Routh said he would be keen to reprise the role of The Man of Steel from SUPERMAN RETURNS and for all those who hated Singer's movie (and I was one of them too), I thought Routh did a decent job with what was pretty much a thankless role.

You see unlike Batman, the character of Superman had already been defined by the legendary performance of Christopher Reeve and for a young actor to follow in his footsteps it would be near impossible to match up. It's like Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones or Marlon Brando as The Godfather... these are iconic portrayals from actors who you would be unwise to imitate.

I mean in comparison it's taken four decades for an actor to match up to Sean Connery's Bond. Yeah Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan were all good in their own way, but none of them were imitators of Connery because it simply couldn't be ...

Latino Review, the first website to tell us that Brandon Routh would play Superman way back in 2004, now breaks the news that the actor will not be back in the cape and tights.

Warner Bros is pressing ahead with plans to make a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie (though the strike may delay the start, according to Anne Thompson at Variety) and the Man of Steel in that film could possibly end up carrying over to the next solo Superman film.

This also signals the end of Bryan Singer's failed (and costly) attempt to revive the franchise. The next time we see a stand alone Superman film, it'll likely have nothing to do with the previous movies - a do-over, if you will.

Singer's movie was a commercial and creative failure - yes, many people like his take on Superman but as a method of restarting a franchise it just doesn't work. SUPERMAN RETURNS works nicely if you want to position it as the final movie in the Richard Donner saga, but where exactly can you take the characters from there?

Once the JUSTICE LEAGUE film was announced around a year ago it was clear that Singer's number was up.

I do feel sorry for Brandon ...

Bad news Mr. Singer.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA has taken away your Summer 2009 tentpole release for SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL and hack director Gus Van Sant may have taken away your chances of filming a Harvey Milk biopic.

Coming Soon have the press release from Focus Features which state that Sean Penn will star as the openly gay 70’s politician Harvey Milk who was gunned down by Dan White, a fellow electoral supervisor in Van Sant's movie MILK... which will begin production in January.

This beats out Singer who is still on post-production on VALKYRIE and because of the writer's strike, he is likely to be no-where near ready for his MILK biopic to roll next year. A shame because I would much prefer to see Singer's version of this tale, especially with him being so desperate for so very long to make it.

It does look however as if there is some bad news for Van Sant. Matt Damon has had to pull out of the picture, like we all expected he would as his pre-strike movie at this time is an adaptation of the war drama IMPERIAL LIFE IN THE EMERALD CITY which he will be shooting early next year ...

I've come to the conclusion that Mark Millar's Superman: Red Son is the greatest Man of Steel comic book story ever written. Yes, even better than Alan Moore's!

I can't quite put my finger on why, but I think I love it so much because Millar totally reinvisons the character - by crashing his space ship into Soviet Russia instead of the American heartland - yet still manages to keep him inherently Superman in spite of the Commie surroundings.

Millar is pretty active on his message forum, where he often regails readers with tales of punching foxes and meeting Jessica Alba. With news breaking that the Bryan Singer helmed Superman sequel is looking for new writers, Millar has posted on his forum about getting in touch with his big shot American agents to try and get his pitch in the door at Warner Bros.
"It's 8.58am right now, my guys at CAA get into the office in about seven hours and my call will be waiting for them to talk about this. I want to revamp Superman like Hillary wants thin ankles. Revamping this franchise is what I as given fingers for and so, invited or not, I'm putting my plan together ...

This might just be the first of many much needed steps if Superman is to make it back to our screens as a solo character.

Variety say that the writers of Superman Returns will not return for the next installment in the franchise, as they are pursuing their newly formed directorial careers. Their names are Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, both of whom have big movies behind the camera on the horizon... I Lucifer (Harris), Trick R' Treatk (Dougherty).

The duo had formed a nice relationship with Bryan Singer who they had also worked with on X-Men 2, but this will give Singer and WB a chance to try something a little fresh for the next film which wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

Variety claim some insiders believe the next Superman film will do a 'Hulk" and forget the last film ever happened and will break away from the continuity that was continued in the last movie and will just start a fresh. That may not be a bad idea at all (they should have done that in the first place) but trying to implement that when the audience will already be confused by a new Superman anyway in the Justice ...

Raise your hand if you've heard of Avi Arad. Now do the same if you know of Gregory Noveck. Thought as much. Noveck is Senior VP of Creative Affairs for DC Comics, a position somewhat similar to the one Arad held at Marvel.

Noveck perhaps lacks the bluster and hubris of Arad because I rarely see or hear anything of him. Despite being so low-key, the website Voices From Krypton have managed to track Noveck down and get a very good interview out of him.

According to Noveck, Bryan Singer's Man of Steel is still in the works, despite rumours stating it's on indefinite hold:-
"That’s not true. The reason that Justice League is powering forward first is because the script came in and it was phenomenal."
He expands a little more on the Justice League/Man of Steel switcheroo:-
"It (the Justice League script) is [really that good], and that very rarely happens in Hollywood on a movie of this scale, and when it does you have no choice but to say, “We’d better catch lightning in a bottle and go!” All of a sudden, six months later, who knows what’s going to happen?
UPDATED: Raimi told MTV Movies Blog that they are pushing through with a script for a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and are currently searching for a director. Raimi will only produce.

It's been five months since Spider-Man 3 opened in May and for the first time in the cinematic series of Marvel's web-slinging character, the fanboy reaction was mixed. After a couple of superhero mis-steps like Superman Returns and Ghost Rider, we had Spidey 3 down as a banker film... one that couldn't possibly fail but of course it did and I've never seen so many people suddenly turn off from a franchise.

I remember when Spider-Man 2 opened and quickly it became talk of Venom or The Lizard as to who would be the villain in Spider-Man 3 and the excitement was pretty much universal, but after the last movie opened, I think a lot of people were happy for the series to take a break.

Infact it seems like more people are excited about Sam Raimi directing something else than coming back for Spider-Man 4. Raimi's spoken on a few things today, one of which was the status of Spider-Man 4 to Superhero Hype...
"Right now, Sony ...

The case of the Siegel family vs. Time Warner has been rumbling on for a few years and now it looks like it'll finally go to trial in January next year according to Back Row Chatter.

For those who aren’t familiar with the story, essentially the widow of Superman creator Jerry Siegel is suing the Warner empire (who hold the rights to the character through DC Comics) for 50% of both the Superman and Superboy copyright.

SUPERMAN RETURNS director Bryan Singer is required to give a deposition to the court presiding over the case - some speculate this might be one of the reasons why THE MAN OF STEEL hasn’t happened yet.

I don’t know why Singer is needed at the trial; after all he’s just a hired gun working for a studio and has had no real say in the character’s creation. If anything, Richard Donner should be in court as he, and the writers behind SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, are responsible for creating the contemporary Superman. Singer’s Superman was pretty much the same as Donner’s except his feinted more.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the Kevin McClory Bond lawsuits that went on and on. All that ended with McClory’s death last year and ...

For a long time I've wanted a hover board. To me it's simply the coolest thing I've ever seen in a film. Scratch that, now top of my wanted list for sci-fi movie gadgets is the hyper-sleep pod thing from Alien. Just put me in it and wake me up when all these Superman rumours are over!

The latest info comes from Film Ick, and it's to do with Bryan Singer's plans for Superman: The Man of Steel. Supposedly Singer and writer Michael Dougherty have pitched Warner Bros their take complete with a first draft script and concept art:
There's a new Kryptonian character coming to Earth as a result of Supes' pilrgimage to Krypton that took place before Returns.
Lex makes a deal with "a new villain" (I read this as new to the films, not new to the mythos, and indeed I have some idea who it is...) in order to have Superman eradicated. This villain double crosses Lex and takes over Lexcorp (yep - sounds like Brainiac to me too). What's more, Jason is a key part in the plot to trap Superman and...
The rest of the info I've left out as if true it's rather spoilerific, but follow the ...

It's difficult to argue with IESB's article today which is more just a brief synopsis of the JLA/Superman: The Man of Steel situation than it is newsworthy. Although they do claim that movie will begin filming early next year and ya know what, I can't argue that point.

All the signs point do point to a JLA movie to begin shooting early next year and taking up Superman: The Man of Steel's place in the summer of 2009. I mean, Warner Brothers are sitting on what they believe to be a billion dollar script here and the thought of having Batman and Superman in the same film must really excite their bank manager.

Superman Returns was disappointing, not just financially but in terms of the film itself... so that's a factor they have to weigh in too. A sequel to that is not guaranteed to return money and it will never make as much as a JLA movie could. They have hired a good director for this thing and after The Dark Knight next year, people will be dying to see Batman again in a movie the year afterwards.

Brandon Routh would certainly do it. Christian Bale I'm not so sure about, though ...

Could it be Brainiac? Who knows?

Michael Dougherty, the co-writer of the next Superman movie has revealed what we already guessed before, that their will be two villains in The Man of Steel, one of which we already know will be Kevin Spacey again as Lex Luthor. Although sounding a little hesitant on the topic, he also reassured us that the sequel will be out by the summer of 2009, which probably just goes to show that Warner Brothers don't even know what Bryan Singer wants to do.

You can read the comments at The Planet Forum found through Coming Soon.

Whoever the villain is, it has to be a kick ass alien hell bent on killing Superman and not neccesarily taking over the world. He has to be someone who comes off as being unstoppable and not some 'business suit' villain'. We need more action, less romance and less of Lois Lane for a change.

Let's pray the second villain of the piece won't once again be Bryan Singer.

Kevin Spacey will once again impersonate Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor for six weeks of the summer next year. That's right, he has signed up to work with Bryan Singer once again for Superman: The Man of Steel but there's no word on whether this time around he will be the main villain or a secondary one.

Bigger news from Variety's article (as the above news was expected) is that it claims Bryan Singer won't work on Superman: The Man of Steel until he's completed not only Valkyrie but also The Mayor of Castro Street. This would put a huge doubt on the early 2008 production start for Superman so Variety must have something wrong somewhere.

Either Superman is delayed or Castro Street isn't happening. Surely the schedule is too tight for Singer to complete two movies by March/April?

I've felt for a while Singer's heart isn't in a sequel to Superman Returns, it really wouldn't surprise me if he was to pull out of the film before the end of this year. And that might actually be a good thing.

Whether he likes it or not (and presumably he does otherwise he wouldn't have signed up for the sequel) director Bryan Singer will begin production on the Superman: The Man of Steel early next year for a release in the summer of 2009.That's according to a source for IESB who said the following...
“That’s total horse shit, I would say the same thing if I was producing that film but don’t you realize that most of the Superman producers are working with Bryan on Valkyrie? Gil Adler and Chris Lee both are in Germany with Bryan and I can guarantee you that there is some work being done with Superman right now...

...Bryan’s deal with Warner Bros. for the Superman sequel is already done and signed and that’s the priority,”
Shame really as I fear Singer is wasting his time with another Superman movie although I do remember a while ago when he said he wanted to go "Wrath of Khan-like" on the Superman Returns sequel.

Sounds good to me. A more adult Superman follow-up is badly needed and please, can we get a villain that isn't Lex Luthor this time? Please? I'm begging ya.

I'm sick to death of seeing a Superman vs. Lex ...

Brandon Routh as recently as last week told us that he expects prep work to begin on Superman: The Man of Steel early next year, for a release in June 2009. This would all seem to make sense as director Bryan Singer is busy at work with shooting Valkyrie and fighting off the German Defense Ministry who believed Tom Cruise was evil!

The latest comments though by Singer's producers of The Mayor of Castro Street (another movie he has on his potential slate) hint that the Superman Returns sequel won't be his next film, and instead it could well be the Harvey Milk biopic we told you he was interested in shooting back in April.
“The next Superman, that’s a ways off,” claimed Meron to RT. Zadan added: “Don’t worry about it. Trust me. We may even start preproduction on Harvey Milk while he’s on post production on the Tom Cruise movie.”
This doesn't actually surprise me as much as you would think because Singer isn't the only one interested in a Harvey Milk movie. Gus Van Sant is also trying to rush a Milk biopic into production and as is always the case in Hollywood, whichever movie gets off the ground first ...
