Time to pour some cold water on some big stories released in the past 48 hours. Batman on Film have gotten in touch with WB rep's who confirm that THE DARK KNIGHT is still due for a re-release in January. I'm sure that will make a lot of you guys very happy indeed and hopefully it won't be restricted to just IMAX theatres.

Here's another thing you guys should know. Dark Horizons have updated their site with the news that their reliable source wasn't all that reliable when it came to the story involving George Miller and his JUSTICE LEAGUE comments on Sunrise Morning Radio Show.

It turns out Miller didn't even appear on the show, let alone discuss the project. So the story of his dismissal from the project is untrue, at least from that source as a basis.

As far as we are aware, Warner Bros. have shelved the project indefinitely, seeing they had a good thing going with the Batman franchise and they are looking to replicate that with movies for Green Lantern, The Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman and a Superman reboot.

Although with the movie adaptation being dead in the water for months, this news has been obvious to everyone for such a long time but in any event, today Aussie director George Miller confirmed on the Sydney-based talk show "Sunrise" that he is no longer working on the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie in any capacity at WB.

Miller had been given the task of directing the proposed team-up movie during the late summer of last year but once Christmas time came and it was still stalling, it was obvious that WB were giving up on the project which by then they had spend a good deal of money on with lots of pre-production stages completed and casting places filled.

The negative fan reaction to the whole idea of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film at this stage of the DC Comics on Screen canon played a huge part in it's demise, a lot of it stemming from the casting of young and mostly inexperienced actors in their 20's but Miller believes that wouldn't happen again if the project did ever get revived.
"the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now."
Miller also told the station that he hasn't yet given up hope of ...

There's an article in today's Variety which hints that Warner Bros and DC Comics are about to change the way they do business with their superhero properties, possibly by bringing in extra third party staff and comic book experts to help them set a trajectory for future success.

Warners prexy Jeff Robinov and senior VP of creative affairs for DC Comics Gregory Noveck spoke Justice League to the trade and mentioned that the audience are likely to need an "education" of "characters and their history" before they could realistically go with the film.

But they do remain committed to bringing the superhero ensemble to the big screen in the future.
"These are big, iconic characters," Noveck says. "So when you make them into a movie, you'd better be shooting for a pretty high standard. You're not always going to reach it, but you have to be shooting for it. We're going to make a Justice League movie, whether it's now or 10 years from now. But we're not going to do it and Warners is not going to do it until we know it's right."
Until the timing is right... the most sensible statement I've heard from the company in years.

Timing is clearly not ...

It's bordering nonsensical talking about the Justice League movie at this point because for every claim, counter claim and then counter, counter claim - but the truth is the movie has no cast or firm greenlight, so until we hear otherwise that's how we will view the official status of the film.

However, IESB have heard a juicy story that's a little too good not to report on.

They say that Australian director George Miller has been pulled off the now dead Justice League project and the film completely canned because WB were worried about the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale backlash on their very successful Batman franchise which has made over $1 billion so far from two movies.

They didn't want to piss them off basically.

But that would seem not to be the end of Miller and WB/DC. The site go on to claim that the studio is looking at Miller as a big potential candidate for the Green Lantern film which looks very likely to be the next original character adapted for screen from their canon, beating The Flash and Wonder Woman to the punch.

They have a script from Greg Berlanti (The Broken Hearts Club, Dawson's Creek) which they are very fond of ...

Probably sounding more hopeful than factual, Australian director George Miller told The Herald Sun that the current plan is to shoot Justice League offshore sometime next year.

The movie is currently shelved, with none of the original actors contracted to the project. As recently as last month, Warner Bros and DC. executives held a meeting to discuss the future of their company's characters in the midst of Marvel's masterful plan of an Avengers movie and the massive success of their own dark character - Batman with the Christopher Nolan franchise.

Where did they go right with The Dark Knight, and not with their own characters - should undoubtedly and was almost certainly the main topic of conversation.

Whilst he was talking to the newspaper, Miller also spoke of Megan Gale's surprise casting as Wonder Woman, sounding almost like he was possibly turned on by her screen test
"She got the job because she blitzed her screen test. I mean, I had no idea she was so good," Miller said.

"She walked into our office in Sydney and read the part. She has done some Italian movies, but I didn't think she would be as good as she was.

"But once she read we all looked around ...

This popped into my inbox today in response to yesterday's article about Louis Letterier "knowing" of a Superman reboot...
Mr. Matt Holmes,

After your recent article was brought to my attention, I figured you would enjoy this. So far it hasn't been posted anywhere, but we know this image was sent to a few websites within the last day including IESB, SuperheroHype, Superman Homepage, and our site as well. Unfortunately for us, the image is part of a proposal we are putting together to pitch a reboot trilogy of Superman to WB. The artist's cousin who took the photo didn't know he works for me and I was one of the people copied on their email. It also included a number of pages to our script, but I'm trying to keep those under wraps still. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me any time.

In regards to this recent news involving Mark Millar and now Louis Letterier, I can tell you that there are at least four groups preparing to pitch reboot ideas with us being one of them. There could be more.
Said image (I will keep the integrity of the person who sent ...

Last week we got word that the Warner Bros. picture Justice League had been "tabled" and today we got some more updates on the situation. It is rapidly coming clear that MOST if not ALL the crew were given their termination notice two weeks ago.

Superman Homepage have heard as much...
"It's a pity, there was a lot of good stuff in it - stuff that would've been fairly new to the screen", said my inside source. "But also some not so good stuff... so who knows...".

"There's a glimmer of hope that it will still be done... but that's a lot of planets to align."
And then a source from Fox Studio's (yes a rival studio) who was working on the same lot as the movie out in Australia told this to IESB...
"yes, it's dead."
No official word as yet from Warners but it would now seem that Superman: The Man of Steel is once again favourite as being the next DC superhero movie to be put into production which Brandon Routh told Collider this week, he hopes will be begin production early next year.

The Free Dictionary describes "tabled" as...
To postpone consideration of (a piece of legislation, for example); shelve.
So does that mean it's being considered to be cancelled and isn't actually cancelled just yet?

Can we all hope for a complete retcon?

Academy Award nominated director Jason Reitman claims that he turned down the opportunity to direct the Justice League of America movie last Summer.

This isn't as far fetched as it sounds. He fits the criteria of director that Warner Bros. sought after originally... someone young and ambitious who has proven himself with a strong character driven film.

You may remember David Slade was hired for two weeks before George Miller came on board.

So why did Reitman turn the film down? Well he didn't think he could make a movie that would live up to the audiences expectation and for now he's quite happy to say in the Indie film genre. This is what he said to Howard Stern when asked "How's the script"...
“Good, FINE… You know, I mean. I had to sign something, they send me the script and it comes on this spy paper which cant be xeroxed,” revealed Jason Reitman. “They have a time when I have to have the script back to them and the script is fine and I could be spending…” Jason later continued: “What am I going to do with Justice League of America? So Basically I’ll make a movie that is not as good as ...

Last week we heard the rumor that Heroes actor Stephen Tobolowsky was in talks for the role of Bruce Wayne's reliable butler Alfred Pennyworth and to no-one's surprise, it's turned out to be false.

The actor who has just finished shooting a new Beethoven movie (that's the lovable dog version and not the composer) told Moviehole that he found the news leak amusing but would actually be interested in the role if it ever came about...
"I sent all of the stories to my manager who has zero idea where the stories came from...who contacted Warners...who has no idea where the story came from", Tobolowsky, whose appeared in the films "Groundhog Day" and "Wild Hogs" says. "The studio said they don't even have a script....that they expect a draft in two MONTHS...they have not secured the super heroes yet let alone their butlers...we shall see".
Well we know that's untrue. They most definitly have a script but I will easily buy into the idea that it's being re-drafted and that the deadline could be May, with filming to take place in the Summer as long as there is no SGA strike. That would explain the lack of any real news being leaked right ...

Why might this news effect Superman: The Man of Steel and Justice League Mortal?
A federal judge here on Wednesday ruled that the heirs of Jerome Siegel — who 70 years ago sold the rights to the action hero he created with Joseph Shuster to Detective Comics for $130 — were entitled to claim a share of the United States copyright to the character. The ruling left intact Time Warner’s international rights to the character, which it has long owned through its DC Comics unit.
Well I can tell you why.

This new ruling means that the Siegel estate is likely to be owed some of the cut of the $200 million domestic taking of Superman Returns, making that film even more of a financial disappointment for Warner Bros who haven't been as enthusiast to go ahead with the sequel as they did for Christopher Nolan and their other big DC property.

This could also have an impact on the Justice League of America movie which will use the Superman character as one of it's main players.

You can read the whole article in THE NEW YORK TIMES HERE.

Thanks to Hellen for pointing this story out to us.

Not to get on the back of one of my peers, I like Josh Tyler and his Cinema Blend is a daily read but I'm really surprised he went ahead and posted this story on his website today. I've never read a story that carried as much as bullshit from it's source than this one!

But wait... this was the same site that ran the story that Scott Porter was Superman back in November.

Again I'm not looking for an argument or anything, I'm just telling everyone out there that they shouldn't get carried away with this false story of Hayden Christensen being Superman.

This is what a reader of CB sent him about a chance meeting he had with Adam Brody (The Flash) in a Canadian bar about the JLA movie...
"George is our director". He said he's playing The Flash, Common is playing Green Arrow (or Lantern, one or the other), Armie Hammer (sounded like Arm and Hammer) is Batman, someone from "mad max" is Martian Man-hunter (didn't catch the name) and Hayden Christensen is Superman. Brody also nodded to the woman to his right and said "she (he said her name but ...

Grain of salt time again but then I suppose every time we talk about the apparently titled Justice League Mortal it's always with skepticism.

Contact Music claim that Heroes actor Stephen Tobolowsky is in talks for the part of Alfred Pennyworth in the possibly summer filmed JLA movie, which probably blows out what looked to be a solid rumor of "Batman just in costume" and no Bruce Wayne for George Miller's pic.

Don't get me wrong, just because Alfred's supposedly in the picture, doesn't necessarily mean Bruce Wayne will make an appearance. But if you look at every Batman film, most of the scenes involving Alfred take place with Bruce.

If you don't watch Heroes, then you might recognise him as Sammy Jenkins from (quite ironically) Christopher Nolan's Memento. He was also Ned... Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day and had a recurring role in Deadwood.

He also happens to be American, which would make him the first live-action non-British Alfred in cinematic history.

He's a decent actor but as Alfred, really? When you have someone as awesome as Michael Caine in Nolan's franchise and then you hire a bit part actor for this $200 million project, you wonder if there are two departments at WB.

More problems for the Justice League, as if it really needed it.

George Miller told the Sydney Morning Herald that there is a 90% chance that the $200 million film will indeed have to move overseas (probably to Canada, something we have covered quite extensively) after it was refused a 40% rebate on the massive Warner Bros. project.
"A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking," Miller said. "If that's going to be the final decision, they're throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs."

"New Zealand built up their franchises through Hercules and Xena into Lord of the Rings," he said. "Now they're doing three Tintin films, two more Hobbit films and Halo. They've got work for 15 years in that country."
The director of the equity section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Simon Whipp argued his stance...
"For the public, both in Australia and outside of Australia, it will be seen as an American film," he said. "I have tremendous respect for George and his work, which has been some of the most successful ...

Justice League is still very much alive guys and I'm of the opinion that all those actors who we have mentioned cast a while back are still locked for this project (with the possible exception of Anton Yelchin) and if it gets going soon they will all be able to suit up pretty quickly.

I also believe that Warner Bros. have spent so much time, effort and money to get the film this far into production that they are scared to death of halting the project indefinitely. They are frantically working on script re-writes and hoping the SAG strike is as quickly resolved as the aborted DGA strike and obviously not the WGA one which would be a worst case scenario.

You can take all this info that I got from an e-mail last night as being legit. Every time we've reported on the Justice League we have been 100% spot on so far and although it doesn't tell us much that we don't know already, it does confirm a few things (the Owen Paterson rumor that's been spreading) and the new secret code name...

The code title of the movie is 7 Friends.

The team (incl Owen Paterson) is still officially on hiatus ...

A mass frenzy occurred in Hollywood in October 2007 when over 40 ambitious young actors, desperate to follow in the footsteps of the Christian Bale's and Brandon Routh's of this world auditioned for various roles in the massive ensemble cast of the $200 million Justice League project.

We have many of the names below, all of which were the unsuccessful actors. To see those we believe to have been successful, click HERE to visit our Justice League Preview Page.

Jessica Biel was offered the chance to play Wonder Woman but turned it down. [OWF Article - 28/09/2007]

Actors who auditioned for Wonder Woman - Victoria Hill, Shannyn Sossamon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Minka Kelly

Actors who auditioned for Green Lantern - T.I, Tyrese Gibson, Columbus Short

Actors who auditioned for Aquaman - Santiago Cabrera

Actors who auditioned for The Flash - Justin Long, Michael Angarano

Actors who auditioned for Superman - Scott Porter

Actors who auditioned for Batman - Josh Duhamel

Actors who auditioned but we don't know what part - Joseph Cross, Max Thieriot, Andrianne Palicki,

Rumors say Eva Green (as Wonder Woman) & Rupert Evans (as Superman) also auditioned but I'm skeptical on both, especially Green who would most certainly not fit into the "casting of unknowns" mentality.

A combination of bad planning, a loss of potential projects to other studios, the writers strike and no faith in a Superman Returns sequel has led Warner Bros. to push heavily for the Justice League film to restart production in the next couple of weeks.

Variety say that WB want a summer tentpole for 2009 to add to the current slate which only includes Watchmen in March and Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins in May. The writers are making drastic last minute changes and are polishing the script right now, with all the original actors (Brody, Hammer, Cotrona, etc.) told to keep training for their parts.

The big decision to push the film seems to have come last week when they lost out in the bidding war to Sony for Roland Emmerich's new "end of the world scenario" with 2012. They have no Potter next year. No other superhero movie. They need cash and if it means rushing this then so be it.

Is that any way to run a studio?

Could bite them in the ass in the years to come when they can't get team-up movies, or stand-alone flicks off the ground when the better run outfit Marvel enjoy success after success ...

Now that the strike is over, it would seem the JUSTICE LEAGUE film is officially back on and will probably begin production quite soon. I kinda figured as much the other week when none of the stars of the picture were announced as finding any other work since they were let go from their contracts.

According to a report in The Sunday Morning Herald, it's claimed JUSTICE LEAGUE MORTAL (probably with a : in), the $200 million superhero team-up movie at Warner Bros. will now shift production to Canada because of problems the film is facing with the Feds in Australia who want a 40% rebate on the project.

The article goes on to mention that the JUSTICE LEAGUE film is back on but in a "precarious" position because of the change of location. The site also goes to say that this guy is in the film. AICN deduce and are quite probably correct that the actor will be Martian Manhunter in the film...

Hugh Keays-Bryne is his name. The Indian born but British character actor is quite a big name in Australia but apart from appearing in Farscape and George Miller's own 1979 movie MAD MAX, you won't know who he is.

Really ...

The trades have confirmed last night's breaking news that the JUSTICE LEAGUE film had been put on "indefinite hold" due to problems with the script that were unsolvable with the WGA strike ongoing.

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter separately have revealed the names of the actors who were all contracted to the picture since November and who must now find other work in the hope that if this JLA picture ever gets off the ground again, they will still be wanted by WB for the parts.
Armie Hammer as Batman (21, Los Angeles, California).

D.J. Cotrona as Superman (27, Wallingford, Connecticut).

Megan Gale as Wonder Woman (31, Perth, Australia).

Adam Brody as The Flash (28, San Diego, California).

Common as Green Lantern (35, Chicago, Illinois).

Anton Yelchin as Aquaman or Villain (role unconfirmed) (18, Leningrad, Russia).

Teresa Palmer as Talia Al Ghul (21, Adelaide, Australia).
Boy did we dodge a bullet there. To be fair to Hammer and Cotrona, none of us know anything about those two guys... for all we know they could be the new Christopher Reeve and Christian Bale.

It was never so much the cast that bothered me it was just everything else that went around it. The storyline they were going for, the in ...

IESB say that the big decision was made on Tuesday to put the JLA film "officially on hold" until "at the very least" the end of the writer's strike, which would mean a probable June start date at the earliest. All actors involved with the picture are now looking for other work (which should be interesting to see who gets jobs in the following weeks, confirming their prior contractual agreement to the movie).

The last six months or so since this project really went into fifth gear has seen an Internet response to every single aspect of production like no other film in recent memory.

It's shown to Warner Brothers indefinitely that there is an interest from the movie community in seeing a JLA film sometime down the road (whether it's in continuity as we would all prefer, stand-alone, a Batman vs. Superman movie or whatever) and we all wanna see them succeed at this... but to do that they need a better plan than hiring high-school actors and going through money-rushed productions.

Warner Brothers and DC are not at the stage yet where they could make this film. Take note of what Marvel are doing. Let's actually setup a Universe full of ...
