The Hollywood Reporter say Chris Evans has been offered the coveted role of Captain America, though reps for Marvel & Evans aren't talking.

If it is a solid scoop (which I think it is) and he takes it (which he will), Evans will be the first actor to have won the role of two separate major Marvel superheroes having already turned in screen time as The Human Torch for the Fantastic Four movies at Fox.

I don't think many of us have any qualms about this. Firstly, that franchise is done and he will never reprise that role. Two, the FF aren't involved in this new Marvel universe so there will never be a cross-over and thirdly; no-one cares about those crappy movies and therefore we have no real affinity towards them. They were embarrassing and we have all put them behind us.

By the time Marvel win back the rights to the FF characters on film (which they will eventually with Disney's lawyers pulling the strings) and with Fox looking at rebooting the series over the next three years, nobody is going to care that he twice played Human Torch.

I would speculate the offer that's been put out to Evans to be ...

According to Mike Fleming, former model turned actor Channing Tatum is now being considered for the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America in Marvel's June 2011 released tentpole which begins filming at the end of next month.

So first there was Chris Evans, then Ryan Phillipe and now Tatum after the original bunch of t.v. actors and unknowns. There's certainly a pattern forming here.

These are actors who have a number of big features under their belt (despite two of them struggling to win roles right now) and it's pretty clear that the bunch of guys Joe Johnston was originally given to consider for a March 1st casting deadline, just weren't up to snuff.

Marvel are deepening their $300,000 pockets, and are now looking at the kind of talent we originally thought would be considered for this. After the jump, a look at three British actresses' up for the love interest part, one of which is Keira Knightley;

Tatum, of course, feels right physicality wise. He has charisma too, even though he kinda went missing in G.I. Joe but nobody really survived that picture with much pride. The guy has momentum with Dear John performing at the box office and with Knockout and The ...

Joe Johnston, a safe, predictable and rather unstimulating director who probably checks both ways no less than four times before crossing the street - is taking no risks with his casting of The Red Skull, the lead villain in The First Avenger: Captain America which films in June.

The Hollywood Reporter say iconic screen villain Hugo Weaving is in talks, and I guess we all know what we are going to get from him. The iconic voice, the expressive angry dog-growl face, the slight smirk of confidence and no doubt, a little bit of baggage that still haunts his roles even a decade on from The Matrix.

If he agrees to the low-ball Marvel offer ($300,000 is all the lead is getting), Weaving will play Hitler's right hand man, the Nazi propaganda mastermind, the great military strategist and sadistic genocidal villain who covers his face with a red mask. Think - The Joseph Goebbels of the Captain America universe, his version of The Joker.

UPDATE:
Just as I was posting this, Deadline say Krasinski is OUT of the Captain America picture and the casting is actually down to the two names from the screen test that I had affinity for, who are both said to still be in "serious contention";

Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy) - all other screentesters are out!

AND

They've thrown in a curveball with Chris Evans - aka Johnny Storm from Fantastic Four - who has come in contention for the part at this late stage. I seriously doubt he would take the small $300,000 paycheck and the 9 picture deal because his stock is worth more than that but I guess Cap is a back draw.

Would he be the first actor to play TWO major Marvel heroes on the big screen??? (I don't count Ryan Reynold's Hannibal King from Blade Trinity as a major character to go alongside his Deadpool). I like the guy but he is too good at playing the brat over the leader, I'd say.

Interesting to see how this all pans out over the coming days.

In quick succession, Michael Cassidy (via twitter) and Scott Porter (via facebook) announced late last week that they had been turned down for the role of Captain America which Joe Johnston begins filming in the U.K. in June.

Previously, Johnston claimed he had until March 1st to find his man, so in all likely-hood Marvel know who they want, or at least are going back-and-fourth over two names. I would expect official casting announcement to hit this week.

Those that have screen tested to play Steve Rogers but have yet to announce their rejection are;
John Krasinski from The Office, Mike Vogel from Cloverfield, Chace Crawford from Gossip Girl, Patrick Fleuger from The 4400, Garrett Hedlund from Tron Legacy.
My choice, IF IT HAD TO BE FROM ONE OF THOSE would be Vogel (who I have very much warmed to in Cloverfield and Texas Chainsaw Massacre redo - he has the Chris Pine gift of charisma and tough-guy masculinity that nearly won him the Kirk role) or Garret Hedlund, who will have an experience of the big time from Tron Legacy - and well, he kind of looks the part.

I just don't think I could get away with John Krasinski from The Office as ...

We should all just calm down a little over the Team Nolan/Warner Bros. situation and from here on in, take each fresh bit of news with a grain of salt and try and find the true within it.

On Friday, IESB claimed that Chris Nolan will direct a future Justice League movie, teaming Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern with The Flash, Batman, Superman and others once he has directed Batman 3, and his brother Jonathan Nolan has co-wrote (with Goyer) and DIRECTED - Superman: The Man of Steel.

This is time to pull the reigns, and go WOOOOOOOOOAAAHHH nelly!

Of course, it's obvious that Warner Bros. would want Chris Nolan to direct a Justice League movie. Think about it - he has a an unblemished record at the studio, they would offer him the kingdom to helm any of their comic properties after the success of his Batman franchise which saved their superhero film division. Hell, only he could get a $200 cerebral summer blockbuster like Inception off the ground because of the carte blanche he has at the studio.

So yeah, he will be Warner Bros' first choice but would Nolan direct Justice League?

Probably not - but the possibility of course remains as long ...

According to Deadline (some have already had their time in front of camera, others will continue throughout the week)...

John Krasinski (30) from The Office...

Which is odd, because he belongs on the geek/everyman side of things and is so far away from the All American, rugged, imposing actor who you believe could bring a legitimacy to the iconic red, white and blue suit. I love the guy and everything but I've been pushing for him to star in the new Ghostbusters franchise rather than as Steve Rogers.

If I were Joe Johnston - I would already have a huge pre-conceived notion of what a likeable comedic actor like Krasinski could bring to the table and I would have a completely separate idea of what Steve Rogers would be, and I just don't think they could match.

Krasinski would need to pull out all the stops on his screen test just to wipe off his current image.

Mike Vogel (30) - Cloverfield, Texas Chainsaw Massacre redo...

He was the runner-up to Chris Pine for the role of Captain Kirk in the Star Trek series. Vogel has big ambitions and is always around for these audition days but has found himself second best on a number of ...

Do you remember The Incredible Hulk?

That pretty wretched Marvel blockbuster that lived in Iron Man's shadow two years ago, and hardly made a dime more than Ang Lee's 2003 movie, which supposedly itself was a box office disaster?

Well the fortunate of you won't remember it, and those that do are probably trying very had to forget it, right? Thankfully no sequel has been commissioned thus far and doesn't look like it ever will be.

However that doesn't necessarily mean Bruce Banner/Hulk is done on film. One question we haven't really had a definite answer to since Hulk's release is whether Marvel's green monster would make up part of The Avengers, as that seemed to be the idea of why Robert Downey Jr made a cameo in his universe in the first place - setting up for bigger things and all that.

Marvel's head Kevin Feige has kinda dodged, avoided completely and given non-affirmative answers to the question for two years but this week, actually seemed to give a firm response that the Hulk would indeed appear in the 2012 team-up...
...by the time The Avengers comes in 2012 its not just a team super hero movie with a bunch of characters with powers, ...

I just wonder whether Warner Bros. are ready to come out and put their neck on the line by giving fans a rough release date for a Justice League movie in this new "DC Strategy" proposal that studio exec Dan Lin tells Collider is to be announced next month.

We sincerely hope so. Marvel are so far ahead of DC right now in terms of future planning that if they don't get their act together fast - any attempt to make a JLA movie is going to look second rate compared to Marvel's well-thought out execution of The Avengers movement.

A release date of 2011 is obviously too soon for JLA, 2012 could be the summer of a new Batman movie, so 2013 - we think? Is it time for Warner Bros/DC to come out and say it's happening, now live with it.

Asked about the JLA movie, Lin tells the site;
It's on-hold right now as DC sorts out its strategy but as you've talked to Alan Horn and Jeff Robinov it seems like they're building to Justice League instead of going with the team movie first and doing individual movies after that... They're unveiling their DC strategy in January so you'll hear ...

We've seen in the past what rushed productions have caused superhero films (X-MEN 3 is a prime example) and IRON MAN 2 next year, should keep us Marvel fans happy till 2011. And then, we've got THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA... and of course a fourth movie in the SPIDER-MAN franchise.

Then THE AVENGERS in 2012, the expected year of release for BATMAN 3. What a year that could be for superhero movies, especially if a new SUPERMAN reboot gears up for release the year before or the year after that.

Marvel's new release schedule...
May 7th 2010 - IRON MAN 2 (no release change, filming begins on that imminently)

May 4th 2011 - SPIDER-MAN 4 (in conjunction with Sony).

June 17, 2011 - THOR (pushed back from July 16th 2010, which is no surprise given they don't have a THOR cast yet)

Ah, it's that time of year again. The cold snows of Winter are about to thaw, new leaves begin to bud on the trees and the stream of Oscar films are making way for the torrent of big budget blockbusters. First on the list is the heavily-hyped and long-awaited adaptation of the Watchmen graphic novel. A complicated and detailed tale of an alternate history in which superheroes were embraced as bringers of justice, only to gradually become marginalised as dangerous and unregulated menaces to society. Interweaving the story of two generations, the story is an expansive discussion of power and justice that draws in detail on the lives of 8 (yes, eight) heroes.

However, amid the accusations that WATCHMEN will be confusing and complicated, it is worth remembering that the director is Zack Snyder: the man who implified and stylised 300 SPARTANS in to 300, and took the politicized zombie world George Romero and made the glossy 2004 version of DAWN OF THE DEAD.

His work on WATCHMEN is no different. The story is broken down admirably well, and told in a series of sequences that are absorbing, exciting and, perhaps best of all, manageable. Sure it's a plot with several big ...

42 year old character actor Neal McDonough sure does talk an awful lot with First Showing about the character of CAPTAIN AMERICA for someone who is not involved with Marvel's big upcoming tentpole...

And he brought up the subject first you'll see...

Does he know something? Has he held early talks with Marvel for the role of Steve Rogers?

I certainly find his back tracking when asked directly "was that a hint?" to McDonough's mention of the character. Like I say, he brought it up and then talked a lot about the character (as if he has been thinking this for a while) and then gave us a "we'll see".

If he's not involved in talks with Marvel, he has certainly done his best to get his name out there.

And the more you think about it, the more he is a pretty damn good choice. Of course, visually he looks a lot like the character. Almost as if it could have been based on him.

He is a well built guy, believable as an action hero. As FS point out, he has done an awful lot of War roles in the past (BAND OF BROTHERS, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS), so he fits straight into the ...

Here's a superhero tidbit from this week which probably does carry some weight of truth behind it, namely because not only does it sound like the kind of smart move Marvel Films have been making recently but it's also sourced from Latino Review, who get it more often right than wrong.

LR say that Marvel will be further fleshing out their cross connections of their characters by having Tim Robbins play Howard Stark, the rich billionaire father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Howard Hughes like figure (without the insanity) who founded Stark Industries in more than one upcoming movie.

The character is expected to be used for FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (as that is set during World War II, a time when Howard Stark's business was thriving and he worked closely with the government) and in flashback scenes in THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 2.

LR don't mention this but I wouldn't be surprised if this also allows Jeff Bridges to return for IRON MAN 2 flashback scenes, showing his close bond with Howard Stark which just adds a little bit of tragedy to what happened to that character when greed took over.

Love the idea. Anything that grows the Marvel ...

Time to pour some cold water on some big stories released in the past 48 hours. Batman on Film have gotten in touch with WB rep's who confirm that THE DARK KNIGHT is still due for a re-release in January. I'm sure that will make a lot of you guys very happy indeed and hopefully it won't be restricted to just IMAX theatres.

Here's another thing you guys should know. Dark Horizons have updated their site with the news that their reliable source wasn't all that reliable when it came to the story involving George Miller and his JUSTICE LEAGUE comments on Sunrise Morning Radio Show.

It turns out Miller didn't even appear on the show, let alone discuss the project. So the story of his dismissal from the project is untrue, at least from that source as a basis.

As far as we are aware, Warner Bros. have shelved the project indefinitely, seeing they had a good thing going with the Batman franchise and they are looking to replicate that with movies for Green Lantern, The Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman and a Superman reboot.

Although with the movie adaptation being dead in the water for months, this news has been obvious to everyone for such a long time but in any event, today Aussie director George Miller confirmed on the Sydney-based talk show "Sunrise" that he is no longer working on the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie in any capacity at WB.

Miller had been given the task of directing the proposed team-up movie during the late summer of last year but once Christmas time came and it was still stalling, it was obvious that WB were giving up on the project which by then they had spend a good deal of money on with lots of pre-production stages completed and casting places filled.

The negative fan reaction to the whole idea of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film at this stage of the DC Comics on Screen canon played a huge part in it's demise, a lot of it stemming from the casting of young and mostly inexperienced actors in their 20's but Miller believes that wouldn't happen again if the project did ever get revived.
"the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now."
Miller also told the station that he hasn't yet given up hope of ...

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley have been hired to write CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel's 2011 Summer tentpole which 10 days ago found Joe Johnston hired to direct.

The scriptwriting duo's C.V. includes the two NARNIA movies, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS and the Ben Kingsley hitman movie YOU KILL ME.

So one hopes quite honestly that they pitched an amazing concept for they could do with CAPTAIN AMERICA and it wasn't a case of Marvel coming knocking on the door to hire them because there's nothing on their C.V. to show why they should have this gig.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is set to be released May 6th 2011.

Joe Johnston, who has just wrapped the high profile remake of THE WOLF MAN for Universal has landed another huge project, probably the biggest film he has ever been hired to make.

He has been chosen by Marvel Studio's to direct FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, his first comic book adaptation since he directed THE ROCKETEER back in the early 90's.

Johnston's other works include JURASSIC PARK III, HIDALGO, OCTOBER SKY, JUMANJI and HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS.

Marvel's President Kevin Feige said...
"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Feige said. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."
Johnston famously came up with the final concept designs for Yoda and Boba Fett in the STAR WARS franchise and won an Oscar for his special effects work on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

The Hollywood Reporter suggest the project isn't as far along as we previously thought. They currently have no script and they are on the lookout for writers, actively seeking pitches from anyone with a good idea... much like what WB ...

You've heard me discuss who or who should not be playing CAPTAIN AMERICA in what we believe will be a Nick Cassavetes (THE NOTEBOOK, ALPHA DOG) directed adaptation of Marvel's biggest superhero yet unrealised on the big screen in the 21st century.

Though that's all set to change on June 4th 2010 and if Marvel are to stick to that date then it can't be long until we finally found out who has nabbed the life changing role. If history is anything to go by, Robert Downey Jr was announced as IRON MAN on September 29th 2006, 19 months before the film opened.

So if that means anything, we should know who is playing Cap next month...

You've had your chance to retort and you guys have come up with some good suggestions. I've put all the names you have mentioned and all mine in this poll. Elections are the mood of the times right now and if we could vote for who we would like to see as Captain America... just who would win out?

Half of the battle with this year's mega successful IRON MAN was won in 2006, way before the film actually started shooting. The casting and the choice of the director, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau were the absolute best men for the job and this May, it showed.

The movie earned over $570 million worldwide and should kick off the second wave of the Marvel franchise that should see them earn several billion dollars over the next 5 years.

The same can be said for BATMAN BEGINS, the battle was won back in 2003 and the huge results were seen this summer with one of the biggest movies of all time.

So for the sake of CAPTAIN AMERICA, for the sake of GREEN LANTERN, for the sake of THOR... that battle is being fought by Marvel and DC/WB right now... all three movies we expect to hit in the next few years but if they get the casting right now, much of the rest will speak for itself.

You only need to see this year's THE INCREDIBLE HULK to see what a mis-casting of director and actor can do for a superhero project.

Today we will look at the first superhero period film...

Unlike the case with Jon Favreau and IRON MAN where it was never in doubt there would be a sequel to their Summer spectacular, it was just a question of sooner rather than later - the same thing can't be said for THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

Edward Norton speaks candidly about his future to MTV...
“The minds of Marvel are sometimes opaque,” Norton told MTV News. “I won’t say [they're] obtuse, but I don’t have any idea what they want to do.”

“They’ve got this notion of collecting the Marvel characters,” said Norton, who appeared a bit skeptical of Marvel’s ambitious plans for the project. “Who knows where they’ll go?”
It didn't make as much money as IRON MAN. It wasn't as well reviewed, it wasn't as well liked by the fanboys (though I do think it fell more on the positive side) and it just simply wasn't as cool.

Will we see another one? Probably... but only to keep the character alive for THE AVENGERS. I honestly think that team-up movie is keeping the character on life support right now. But I'm not sure we will see Eddie Norton back.
