We are patient folk, are we not? Better to take your time, get the right creative team on board, make sure every fine detail of the movie is as good as it can be before bringing it out to the masses.

We've seen in the past what rushed productions have caused superhero films (X-MEN 3 is a prime example) and IRON MAN 2 next year, should keep us Marvel fans happy till 2011. And then, we've got THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA... and of course a fourth movie in the SPIDER-MAN franchise.

Then THE AVENGERS in 2012, the expected year of release for BATMAN 3. What a year that could be for superhero movies, especially if a new SUPERMAN reboot gears up for release the year before or the year after that.

Marvel's new release schedule...
May 7th 2010 - IRON MAN 2 (no release change, filming begins on that imminently)

May 4th 2011 - SPIDER-MAN 4 (in conjunction with Sony).

June 17, 2011 - THOR (pushed back from July 16th 2010, which is no surprise given they don't have a THOR cast yet)

July 22nd, 2011 - THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (pushed back from May 6th 2011)

May 4, 2012 - THE AVENGERS (pushed back from July 15th ...

42 year old character actor Neal McDonough sure does talk an awful lot with First Showing about the character of CAPTAIN AMERICA for someone who is not involved with Marvel's big upcoming tentpole...

And he brought up the subject first you'll see...

Does he know something? Has he held early talks with Marvel for the role of Steve Rogers?

I certainly find his back tracking when asked directly "was that a hint?" to McDonough's mention of the character. Like I say, he brought it up and then talked a lot about the character (as if he has been thinking this for a while) and then gave us a "we'll see".

If he's not involved in talks with Marvel, he has certainly done his best to get his name out there.

And the more you think about it, the more he is a pretty damn good choice. Of course, visually he looks a lot like the character. Almost as if it could have been based on him.

He is a well built guy, believable as an action hero. As FS point out, he has done an awful lot of War roles in the past (BAND OF BROTHERS, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS), so he fits straight into the ...

Here's a superhero tidbit from this week which probably does carry some weight of truth behind it, namely because not only does it sound like the kind of smart move Marvel Films have been making recently but it's also sourced from Latino Review, who get it more often right than wrong.

LR say that Marvel will be further fleshing out their cross connections of their characters by having Tim Robbins play Howard Stark, the rich billionaire father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Howard Hughes like figure (without the insanity) who founded Stark Industries in more than one upcoming movie.

The character is expected to be used for FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (as that is set during World War II, a time when Howard Stark's business was thriving and he worked closely with the government) and in flashback scenes in THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 2.

LR don't mention this but I wouldn't be surprised if this also allows Jeff Bridges to return for IRON MAN 2 flashback scenes, showing his close bond with Howard Stark which just adds a little bit of tragedy to what happened to that character when greed took over.

Love the idea. Anything that grows the Marvel ...

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley have been hired to write CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel's 2011 Summer tentpole which 10 days ago found Joe Johnston hired to direct.

The scriptwriting duo's C.V. includes the two NARNIA movies, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS and the Ben Kingsley hitman movie YOU KILL ME.

So one hopes quite honestly that they pitched an amazing concept for they could do with CAPTAIN AMERICA and it wasn't a case of Marvel coming knocking on the door to hire them because there's nothing on their C.V. to show why they should have this gig.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER is set to be released May 6th 2011.

Joe Johnston, who has just wrapped the high profile remake of THE WOLF MAN for Universal has landed another huge project, probably the biggest film he has ever been hired to make.

He has been chosen by Marvel Studio's to direct FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, his first comic book adaptation since he directed THE ROCKETEER back in the early 90's.

Johnston's other works include JURASSIC PARK III, HIDALGO, OCTOBER SKY, JUMANJI and HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS.

Marvel's President Kevin Feige said...
"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Feige said. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."
Johnston famously came up with the final concept designs for Yoda and Boba Fett in the STAR WARS franchise and won an Oscar for his special effects work on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

The Hollywood Reporter suggest the project isn't as far along as we previously thought. They currently have no script and they are on the lookout for writers, actively seeking pitches from anyone with a good idea... much like what WB ...

You've heard me discuss who or who should not be playing CAPTAIN AMERICA in what we believe will be a Nick Cassavetes (THE NOTEBOOK, ALPHA DOG) directed adaptation of Marvel's biggest superhero yet unrealised on the big screen in the 21st century.

Though that's all set to change on June 4th 2010 and if Marvel are to stick to that date then it can't be long until we finally found out who has nabbed the life changing role. If history is anything to go by, Robert Downey Jr was announced as IRON MAN on September 29th 2006, 19 months before the film opened.

So if that means anything, we should know who is playing Cap next month...

You've had your chance to retort and you guys have come up with some good suggestions. I've put all the names you have mentioned and all mine in this poll. Elections are the mood of the times right now and if we could vote for who we would like to see as Captain America... just who would win out?

Half of the battle with this year's mega successful IRON MAN was won in 2006, way before the film actually started shooting. The casting and the choice of the director, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau were the absolute best men for the job and this May, it showed.

The movie earned over $570 million worldwide and should kick off the second wave of the Marvel franchise that should see them earn several billion dollars over the next 5 years.

The same can be said for BATMAN BEGINS, the battle was won back in 2003 and the huge results were seen this summer with one of the biggest movies of all time.

So for the sake of CAPTAIN AMERICA, for the sake of GREEN LANTERN, for the sake of THOR... that battle is being fought by Marvel and DC/WB right now... all three movies we expect to hit in the next few years but if they get the casting right now, much of the rest will speak for itself.

You only need to see this year's THE INCREDIBLE HULK to see what a mis-casting of director and actor can do for a superhero project.

Today we will look at the first superhero period film...

Matt here…

Will Smith has not been cast as Captain America, despite what actor Derek Luke told MTV yesterday. Marvel, sounding a little pissed, have e-mailed AICN to debunk the rumor and tell them that there is no reason why Luke would know what was going on at their studio and his claims are totally unfounded and inaccurate.

They claim they have never even considered Smith for Cap.

As far as I can tell, they ideally are looking for a blue eyed, tall, blonde haired, good looking guy in the mold of an Aaron Eckhart to play the All American Hero. And besides, Will Smith is just too Will Smith to play Captain America.

And let's not forget the majority of the movie will be set during the WWII period, so Smith's very modern day style of charisma would have had to be toned down greatly.

If Matthew McConaughey could act, they would have cast him months ago, but they don't want the fan backlash the project would have if they made the wrong choice early. Marvel won half the battle when they cast Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, they want a similar kind of buzz straight off the bat from their casting here.

Those eagle eyed readers will have noticed that Marvel's upcoming Captain America movie has gone through a slight name change.

The film will now be titled The First Avenger: Captain America which undoubtedly in my mind sounds better than Captain America: The First Avenger.

Also we now have some plot details and the good news is that the origin film will be set in the World War II period with Steve Rogers fighting off the Nazi's and volunteering to be the test subject in a new top-secret defense program for the U.S. army. The experiment required Rogers to take a super strength serum which the government could never replicate, leaving Rogers as an ultimate fighting weapon and symbol of American strength.

Now I know what your thinking... "Matt, if it's set in WW-II, then how will an eventual Avengers team-up work with the modern day Hulk and Iron Man?".

Well in the comics to bring Rogers to the modern day, they ran a storyline where The Avengers discovered Steve Rogers’ body in a block of ice where he had been preserved. They resusitated him and hey presto... Captain America is transported to the modern day and is in the Avengers. That will likely be ...

Marvel Studio's is an exciting company to follow right now as they attempt to carve out the characters that they hope to build a universe around that can keep delivering Iron Man like numbers box office numbers for the next decade and even beyond.

As DC continue to debate, dither and quite simply fail over bringing their superheroes to the big screen that are outside of the big two, Marvel are pushing ahead with at least two movies a year and are making fortune after fortune.

Slight gloating but more to tease and keep us informed about their future, Marvel released a press release this morning indicating their future plans...

April 30th 2010 - IRON MAN 2 (the movie will also introduce Thor according to the press release)
June 4th 2010 - THOR (Matthew Vaughn directing)
May 6th 2011 - THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (working title - which hints that Cap will be introduced in a slightly different manner to others)
July 2011 - THE AVENGERS (Hulk, Iron Man, Cap America, Thor, Nick Fury (and rest of S.H.I.E.L.D)... possibly/probably more!

This story brought a smile to my face, primarily because I never expected news of any significance to ever come from the ITV daytime show This Morning.

Over on CHUD Devin got word from a reader that Nick Cassavetes' mother (The Notebook, Alpha Dog), actress Gena Rowlands was on the show and talked about her son's next movie. Here's the pertinent details from CHUD's scooper:
"My wife tells me that Gena Rowlands was on (the show), and mentioned that her son was ORIGINALLY going to direct an Iron Man movie... he's now instead thinking of doing Captain America. Not quite sure who her son is... or whether she's accurate... but thought I'd send it your way anyway."
I love that the scooper pulls out the old "my wife" trick - admit it, son, you were watching This Morning!

Captain America generated a hell of a lot of newspaper and online copy recently when he was killed off in the comics, perhaps the first character to do that since the "Death of Superman" arc.

I love the concept for Captain America: weedy soldier becomes WWII hero and is frozen in suspended animation, only to be revived in the present day having to face contemporary enemies and ...

Marvel's movie turn around is so much smoother than the one at DC. Over the last couple of years DC have been struggling to get Wonder Women, The Flash and The Green Arrow features made whilst Marvel keep chugging out their X-Men's, FF's, Spider-Man's etc.

Next year alone they are hoping to have Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Wolverine and The Punisher 2 out.

Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige talks all things Marvel to Coming Soon, and he kindly lets us in on the knowledge that Captain America could be the next big Marvel character put into production...
"I have a writer on 'Captain America' right now, hoping to get a director on that very soon to get that into the pipeline within the next year. Same thing with 'Thor,'" said Feige. "Mark Protosevich has delivered a 'Thor' script, David Self is writing 'Captain America.'"

"We'll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propoganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers interesting fascinating hero in his own right." Is the script they're developing a period piece? "Right now what we're developing would be about half and half."
