Touted from day one as possibly the favourite for this year's Best Picture Award at the Academy Awards, Clint Eastwood's next movie is THE HUMAN FACTOR, a biopic of Nelson Mandela starring Morgan Freeman I what I expect to be his career defining role.

The movie has been shooting for a few days now in South Africa and is based on John Carlin's novel Playing the Enemy and will be released in December, just in time for the Oscar season.

Academy favourite Eastwood who surprisingly last year didn't have a movie up for nomination despite releasing both THE CHANGELING and GRAN TORINO, but is riding off his most popular movie of all time as TORINO has grossed $142 million at the domestic box office.

One wonders if WATCHMEN ($72 million) has any chance of the legs to equal that number.

There are several things counting quite heavily against GRAN TORINO. The first is that Clint Eastwood is old, and a lot of Hollywood old boys refuse to give up the image they used to have and just look silly. The second is that Clint Eastwood isn't doing this, and Hollywood loves it when they do (even if I think elderly prima donnas are arseholes). Thirdly, it could easily be seen as an Oscar begging bowl trying to get Eastwood a final gong before he departs for the big film studio in the sky. Finally there is an issue more than adequately railed against by my esteemed colleague Ray: the marketing pretends it's a guns-blazing bonanza of violence (like the distributors probably wanted).

Nonetheless, I maintain that GRAN TORINO is a great film. It uses several of these preconceptions to twist the assumptions of the audience on their head in a valiant effort to reach out to the Eastwood audience with a new message. Essentially what the movie is doing is telling the story of the changing shape of America from the perspective of a man very clearly lodged in its past - in this sense it isn't too dissimilar to NO ...

In DIRTY HARRY, you always stood by Clint Eastwood's Insp. Harry Callahan, even when he did things that were morally suspect or damn right wrong. You knew that by the people he put away, the streets would be cleaner. He was morally doing the right thing if not always being morally correct about the way he did it.

He was the archetypal George Bush figure of today, you dislodge those that are a big threat to society knowing the casualties you make are worth it for the future good. I'm not saying I agree with that point of view but with having such strong convictions you could at least sympathise with the Callahan figure.

And sympathise we must have. The character was popular enough to go through four further sequels spanning 17 years of cinema. With GRAN TORINO, I kind of wish it had been another one.

In Clint Eastwood's first on screen role since his Oscar nominated turn in MILLION DOLLAR BABY four years ago, the hastily produced GRAN TORINO features the grizzled and gruff veteran as Walt Kowalski, a Callahan-esque ex Korean war vet who also believes he is doing the morally correct thing but the key difference here is this ...

A deeply grizzled Clint Eastwood, back on our screens for the first time in four years is Walt Kowalski, a pissed off elderly racist who doesn't quite agree with how the world is changing around him, as foreigners start moving in next door.

Or at least that's how the trailer starts but there's more to this character than meets the eye and an incident in his neighbourhood forces him to interact and help those of different race, who he previously only showed disdain towards. This is much more than a film about an old guy protecting his prized vehicle from a youthful gang of crooks.

Apple have released a HD trailer for the movie, which you can see by clicking on the screenshot below.

The movie very much has Clint doing his angry DIRTY HARRY gig and you can certainly see from the character why some people who got hold of the leaked script thought it could have been a film about an older Harry Callahan.

In fact, I'm sure Clint probably flirted with making it a DIRTY HARRY flick... a kind of late entry to the series that would do for FIRST BLOOD what RAMBO did or what ROCKY BALBOA did for ROCKY.

USA Today have nabbed the first set of press material for the Clint Eastwood directed drama GRAN TORINO, which also marks his first acting role since his Best Actor nomination for MILLION DOLLAR BABY four years ago.

The movie which has been produced, shot, edited and completed all in 2008... will open on limited release on Dec. 12th.

In the movie he plays Walt Kowalski, a racist Korean War vet whose prized possession 1972 Ford Muscle classic car becomes the object of affection from a gang of local youths (one from an immigrant background) in his Destroit Neighbourhood. The rifle from the poster, is his weapon of choice to protect his baby

Reminds me of the kind of movie John Wayne did in the twilight of his career.

Before GRAN TORINO, Eastwood's THE CHANGELING with Angelina Jolie opens in the U.S. on Oct. 31st and in the U.K. on Nov. 28th.

Two trailers premiered today for two flicks that I dare say were only on the middle blip of our radar. That is to say, they weren't ones we were counting down to see because of their subject matter but they are made by interesting enough talent that he might just dip into them come release time.

First up it's German director Tom Tyker's (RUN LOLA RUN, PERFUME: STORY OF A MURDERER) latest film THE INTERNATIONAL which stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. They plan an Interpol Agent (Owen) and a Manhatten D.A (Watts) who are thrust into bringing down one of the world's most powerful banks after they learn of a corruption plot used to finance terrorism and war.

And the second trailer is for Clint Eastwood's 1920's period drama CHANGELING, which was well reviewed at Cannes and stars Angelina Jolie whose stolen nine year old son has been returned to her five months after the disppearance, only to find it's not her actual son. John Malkovich and Amy Ryan co-star.
The movie looks typically moody from Eastwood, that infamous black and drab colour scheme of his present from the first frame. And so harshly robbed of an Oscar nom last year for ...

At Cannes, former director SPIKE LEE spoke out against what he perceived as a racist slant to CLINT EASTWOOD'S acclaimed war movie about Iwo Jima called FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS.

His initial comments, blurted in his usual stream-of-consciousness manner, railed against the lack of black people depicted in Eastwood's film:
"If you reporters had any balls you'd ask him why. There's no way I know why he did that -- that was his vision, not mine. But I know it was pointed out to him and that he could have changed it. It's not like he didn't know."
Eastwood allowed Lee's comments to simmer for a while before responding thusly:
"A guy like him should shut his face."
When Clint Eastwood tells you to shut your face, your probably should. However, rather than leave it at a threat, Eastwood went on to elaborate on the reason why he did not include black people in the film:
"The story is Flags of Our Fathers, the famous flag-raising picture, and they (black troops) didn't do that. If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there, people'd go, 'This guy's lost his mind.' I mean, it's not accurate."
This sensible conclusion did little to dissuade Lee, who today ...

You know yesterday when we said Clint Eastwood was pushing through a secret movie titled Gran Torino which many believed had already begun production without word of the cast, crew or even the plot making it out in the trades, or elsewhere?

Well the truth is out there now and it's the last thing I would ever have thought of.

A reader has sent AICN the scoop that it's going to be a new Dirty Harry movie...

Can it be true? Here's that letter to AICN...
Nobody seems to know – not even the trades – what Clint Eastwood’s new movie, Gran Torino, is…. So I’ll tell you.

I recently advertised my 1974 ford grand torino classic original for sale in the local here, and within 24 hours had someone from Village Roadshow Pictures interested in having a look at it. He came. He wasn’t interested for numerous reasons (probably the modifications). He told me they were looking for the right car for a new Clint Eastwood movie.

He said it was a thriller about a killer that drives a certain torino. His 1972 Ford Gran Torino is the only thing the police have on him. A retired police lieutenant, one Harry Callahan, makes it ...

After lots of talk of retiring himself in front of the camera, it looks like we will all get the chance to enjoy at least one more Clint Eastwood performance.

Today's Variety carry the news that the legendary veteran will star and direct Gran Torino, a Warner Bros. & Village Roadshow Picture which will be released in December (which is weird scheduling, because Eastwood's next movie Changeling opens in November) and is being kept hush-hush for the time being.

In fact the project is so hush-hush, he might have already begun filming. Presumably the movie will be about the Ford Gran Torino car and god damnit, can I hope and get excited for an epic racing car movie and not a Starsky & Hutch sequel!
