It's been four months since I have meaningfully written about Batman 3, a movie that most definitely WILL happen sometime over the next four years but as of 26.10.09, some 15 months after The Dark Knight was released in theatres, frustratingly, we are absolutely no closer to seeing the caped crusader back on our screens.

However my childlike impatience aside, the smart side of my brain is convinced that allowing breathing space for The Dark Knight and the whole Heath Ledger/Oscar microscope will only benefit the longevity of this compelling mainstream movie franchise. After all, despite the fact we haven't had as much as a breadcrumb of solid information to go on for well over a year now, anticipation for the next outing for these three guys is a hot as ever...
Chris Nolan, Michael Caine and Christian Bale, the three figureheads of the current
Batman franchise mull over a scene in 2008's
The Dark Knight, the second highest grossing picture of all time.
A LITTLE INCEPTION KEEPS NOLAN BUSY
Director Chris Nolan has been spending the best part of the last year working on Inception, his big budget (anywhere between $150-180 million) original sci-fi project at Warner Bros. which is now in post-production for a release ...

Only Christopher Nolan could keep the plot for a $180-200 million Warner Bros. summer blockbuster a secret but he has done an admirable job so far and even though I'm desperate to know what "the architecture of the mind" is all about, the truth is the less I know come next July, the better the experience for me.

Of course when a picture cost as much as to make as this one has, simply putting up the tag "from the director of The Dark Knight" and slapping Leonardo DiCaprio's picture on the poster isn't going to be enough, so Warners will no doubt make sure every man, woman and child is bombarded with knowing just exactly what the movie is about when 2010 rolls around.

Here's The Matrix esque, really dark and threatening trailer (loved the shot he has re-tooled from The Dark Knight, a shaky cam shot whilst a guy is being dragged away) which is such a tease. I think it's scored to a remix of the Joker theme...

Trust Christopher Nolan to tease us with a tedious spinning top to advertise his sci-fi movie Inception.

Is this the first act of his magic trick, has he got a hidden viral campaign up his sleeve? Or is it really just a spinning top. There's got to be more to it than that, surely?

I would love to hear your reactions to the short teaser trailer if you are attending screenings of Inglourious Basterds this weekend. I'm hearing the trailer will be online for all of us to see come Monday morning.

A boat load of set photo's have been released this week for Christopher Nolan's highly secretive Inception but nothing that really indicates much. Paris looks like Paris. DiCaprio just looks like DiCaprio. Ellen Page still looks impossibly young.

DiCaprio is making out with a chick I don't recognise. DiCaprio kind of oddly looks like a good looking Christopher Nolan, same hair/clothes style/posture. I now know thanks to a calling sheet that DiCaprio's character appears to be named COBB - which is also the name of the character in Nolan's first movie Following. Interesting.

None of this really gives me a clue as to what the movie is about. And the more I read about it, the more confused I get. A spy for AICN sent in a vague description of what we can expect to see from the teaser trailer for next July's picture which is set to be shown from tomorrow with some prints of Inglourious Basterds.
This was a very short teaser. It started with Christopher Nolan's name, then a flash of a spinning top, then "The Director of The Dark Knight", then a bird's eye view of a city. Then cut to Leonardo in a vehicle, looking on in horror, ...

The teaser trailer for the next cinematic entry from a director attempting to follow-on from the biggest movie of all time (I know Titanic made more money but The Dark Knight will be more significant) will have it's debut in front of Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic Inglourious Basterds, opening August 21st.

Or August 19th in the U.K. but no word if we are getting it too. Of course I'm talking about Chris Nolan and his sci-fi action drama Inception.

Security has been water-tight on this project for months at Warner Bros. who are desperate not to let script details leak at the request of Chris Nolan who wants to be able to surprise and wow us come July 15th 2010. So I wouldn't expect too much from the trailer, maybe just a glimpse at the plot but I'm sure he has the first act of his magic trick marketing meticulously planned out and it will tease us enough to get us excited.

We know who will star, and it's a great cast of names (DiCaprio, Cotillard, Watanabe, Caine, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Cillian Murphy) but we know very little else except it's got a huge budget (possibly over $180 million), ...

Gary Oldman may be playing us for fools, but during the Comic Con panel for his upcoming Denzel Washington apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli, Commissioner Gordon himself claimed that production is ramping up on Batman 3 to shoot next summer, with the film coming out as early as 2011.

Which contradicts all the official and unofficial scuttlebutt we have been hearing in the 12 months since The Dark Knight took over the summer of 2008. Oldman officially said...
“The next batman is next year, so I think it is two years away. But you didn’t hear it from me.”
Which is about as far and away from the usual answer of "well it depends what happens with Chris" which everyone involved in the series has answered with when inevitably cornered by journalists wanting to get this kind of scoop.

Is Oldman telling the truth, has he got his wires crossed?

Is Nolan on board... could he even possibly be on board considering he is mega busy on Inception, hardly a small sized flick. Of course it's feasible, but he would have to move onto the film straight away. Guess we'll find out later today as Quint from AICN has one-on-one time with Nolan, and he's already mentioned he is ...

According to the guys that run Nolan Fans, the very secretive July 2010 released WB science fiction movie Inception has filmed in the following U.K. locations...

Farnborough Airport last Friday...

University College London last week. Oliver's Arrow, appears to be the fake title of the movie...
The film crew for "Oliver's Arrow" today invaded UCL's Wilkins building to film some scenes in various locations within the Main Library. Michael Caine, Leonardo di Caprio and Ellen Page were on location filming scenes in what had been dressed up (with fake signage) to be the "Bibliotheque" of the "Ecole de Architecture" in France.

They continue...
From what we're been able to hear so far, there was a scene being shot in the Flaxman Gallery (a section of the Main Library on campus) with Leonardo DiCaprio's character being introduced to a graduate student named Ariadne (possibly Ellen Page) by Michael Caine's character. Apparently, DiCaprio's character had a job offer for her. We've also heard that some other scenes were being shot in a lecture theater, a reading room, and some other locations inside the Main Library.
The $150-$200 million project, based on Chris Nolan's original concept and script is still being kept firmly under-wraps.

I kind of promised myself I wouldn't talk about Batman 3 anymore until we had a little bit of concrete and officially released information to mull over but when Batman on Film run an "industry scuttlebutt" it's usually as good as anything you will read about The Caped Crusader anywhere.

Usually, the site is more trustworthy than official sources themselves.

After a long bit of downtime in this film's development (mainly because Nolan has put his attention to Inception right now), Jett received an email from a trusted industry source late last night who told him a couple of news tidbits which should carry a health warning to any die hard Batman fan who may be suffering from a dodgy heart.

FIRST: That the death of Heath Ledger rocked Chris Nolan so much to the core that he was convinced in the months leading up to the release of The Dark Knight that he was done with this series and wouldn't return for a third movie. The original plan was to include The Joker in the third movie, but the source doesn't indicate whether this was before Heath Ledger's death.

TWO: The earliest of all estimates have Batman 3 scheduled for the summer of ...

According to The Calgary Sun, Warner Bros. have entrusted $200 million, i.e. around 1/5th of the worldwide box office gross of the phenomenally successful 2008 superhero blockbuster The Dark Knight to it's British director Christopher Nolan who is about to begin filming his original self scripted science fiction epic Inception in five different countries.

A large shoot in Kananaskis, Alberta (around the Canadian Rockies) is planned with Fortress Mountain said to be a spot hand-picked by Nolan during a helicopter scouting session. An “elaborate set” is to be built, with potentially "thousands" of local workers to be employed to build it (which explains where the money is going). A batcave in the snow? (no before you say it, Inception is not a secret working title for Batman 3).

Now newspapers generally enjoy the luxury of exaggerating predicted budgetary costs but with Nolan and his actors being so secretive over just what Inception is about (reminiscent of what James Cameron has done with Avatar), you have to wonder just how large Nolan is thinking here. We had previously heard $150 million but maybe Nolan has asked for a little more, waiving a Batman mask in front of execs as a reminder that it's money he ...

One of the funniest and quite frankly desperate fanboy hopes of recent years is getting some play around fansites and message boards right now. A significant audience are predicting that Chris Nolan's original science fiction movie at Warner Bros. titled Inception, is actually a mask for something much bigger. They claim it's actually a working title for a third Batman movie, a way to keep the press of Nolan's back a little during production and to not give away any secrets too early.

They cite the lack of a real plot for the movie other than the line; "set within the architecture of the mind" and the casting of a couple of old Batman faces, i.e. Michael Caine (Alfred), Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow) and via today's Hollywood Reporter, the newly cast Ken Watanabe (who played a fake Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins, though his character is dead) and the fact it's setup once again at Warner Bros.

Fanboys have also become intrigued by the castings of Marion Cotillard (who as I have mentioned would make a great Catwoman), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who seems more and more like the logical choice to replace Heath Ledger's The Joker, the more you think about it) and now ...

Warner Bros. are in talks with 2008 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, 2008 Oscar nominee Ellen Page and the Scarecrow himself Cillian Murphy to star in Chris Nolan's science fiction film Inception says today's Hollywood Reporter.

The film which Nolan wrote as his first original solo written script will begin production in the summer with Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role. The movie has the release date July 16th, 2010 already attached.

Nolan, who always likes to tease, has yet to release anything more than this as a plot...
"contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".
BUT, we do have some character details at last.

DiCaprio will play a CEO-type executive, Cotillard is his wife. Page is a young college grad and sidekick to DiCaprio.

They also reveal that James Franco was ready to sign onto the project but had to drop out when a schedule was picking up for his stoner comedy adventure film Your Highness with David Gordon Green. Presumably he was up for the role that Cillian Murphy eventually nabbed.

Nolan has a great eye for casting, everything from the major roles all the way down to the small supporting players. Cotillard in a year's time should be a household name when ...

But he's hit the jackpot today. Variety say Christopher Nolan, one of the top five in the business today has hired him to lead INCEPTION, the sci-fi summer epic that he wrote and will direct as his next movie at Warner Bros.

The movie is aiming for a release next summer and all we know is that it's "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".

DiCaprio is at the top of his game right now. If it wasn't for the fact it was a particularly strong year for leading male performances, he would have been right up their with a shout at Best Actor for his performance in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD.

Love the idea of him doing sci-fi. Love the idea of him working with Nolan!

Wonder what this movie is about?

... an original sci-fi thriller he wrote titled INCEPTION, which he be produced by his wife and THE DARK KNIGHT producer Emma Thomas. The story broke in tonight's The Hollywood Reporter.

INCEPTION is described as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind."

I'm not quite sure what the hell that means but it sounds absolutely fantastic and I can't tell you how delighted I am to see Nolan join the number of high profile directors tackling sci-fi right now, a genre in great need of a boost.

INCEPTION will shoot this Summer and all being well should hit theatres mid-2010. This will be one of Warner Bros. biggest movies of next year as they currently have no comic book movie set for release (everyone doubts a proposed GREEN LANTERN could be ready in time).

As expected, Nolan doesn't wanna be seen as just the BATMAN guy and is once again helming a movie in between two Warner Bros. smash hits. It mirrors what he did with his smaller, more personal project THE PRESTIGE which began casting almost immediately after BATMAN BEGINS hit cinemas.

Though INCEPTION sure doesn't sound like just a small flick.

You all know I'm the biggest Batman fan around ...

Joaquin Phoenix's extremely premature retirement is a sad loss to cinema, I hate seeing talented actors lose their passion too early. BUT, I have a feeling one role might be so juicy, might be so exciting for him, joining a team of the best artists working in cinema today and reading the writing material that has already spawned several fantastic performances a series might entice him back quickly.

If one director lays down the challenge to Phoenix and I would love him to do it, we might see Phoenix back on our screens in the Summer of 2011.

If Chris Nolan wants Phoenix for The Riddler, I don't think he could refuse. Wouldn't ya just love to see it too? (this is not a rumor, or true story... just me pondering)...

The first time I saw THE DARK KNIGHT, I was left completely and truly speechless.

Now I knew going in it was going to be something special. Those early trailers we first caught glimpses of 12 months ago showed what an exciting movie Christopher Nolan looked to have created, a confidence and a "no holding back" attitude he brought to the table which took the cuffs firmly off his work in BATMAN BEGINS.

In the months leading up to the release it was impossible not to be sucked into the hyperbole surrounding THE DARK KNIGHT and in particular Heath Ledger's performance but once the credits rolled, I couldn't talk. I couldn't speak, I honestly couldn't believe I had seen that kind of movie that dealt with my favourite literary character, it went way beyond my admittedly insane expectations.

In BEGINS, I always felt Nolan was a little restraint in what he gave us because he felt he needed to re-introduce a character who had become lost in the absurdity that was Joel Schmacher's BATMAN & ROBIN. He was more interested in making a good origin story for Batman, than necessarily the best film he could make with the character. For THE DARK KNIGHT, ...

Batman isn't just on the run from Gary Oldman's Comissioner Gordon and the whole Gotham Police Force after the events of THE DARK KNIGHT but he is also now being hunted down by Batman himself.

Variety say the mayor of the oil-producing city of Batman in South Eastern Turkey is suing director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. in attempt to obtain some of the royalties from the near $1 billion movie.

Huseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman's case includes placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that THE DARK KNIGHT'S success has had on the city's inhabitants.
"There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us."
Right!

Because Batman in comics hasn't existed for 80 years right? Did they not hear about the t.v. show in the 60's with Adam West or the massive Tim Burton and Joel Schmaucher movies in the late 80's and 90's?

Or BATMAN BEGINS even in 2005?

The whole case resides on the damage the massive summer epic has caused on their city (which surely could only boost the economy from curious tourists ...

In the first part of a three arc interview with the Los Angeles Times, Brit director Christopher Nolan begs the question, "How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?".

It's a solid question and his perfect legacy so far with the character is something he wants to keep in tact, whether that means stopping now with the franchise or making sure if he was to do another movie... it's a story that will keep him interested for over two years to tell.

You can certainly see why history is against him. THE DARK KNIGHT was compared to THE GODFATHER PART II or THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Neither of those franchises recovered from how good those movies were and when you watch THE DARK KNIGHT... they threw all the eggs into that basket right there. How can anyone top or improve that, can it be done?

Nolan clearly wasn't thinking about the future. He was out to make the best film possible and that's probably why he succeeded where so many have failed. on the second throw of the dice. He thought big and delivered big. One of the biggest films of all time.

Nolan, who has been quite quiet since it's ...

I guess I can't avoid this story when Production Weekly, a trade magazine no less with many inside studio sources, have this week listed BATMAN 3 on it's development site with Chris Nolan's name attached to direct.

Presumably that means he has scribed his signature on the next film's contract. It's also claimed that pre-production will begin in February, which is a good six months earlier at least than the time between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

Does this count as the official confirmation that we were waiting for?

I would suggest it certainly indicates that Nolan might not be directing another film between BATMAN 2 and 3 and what we do know for sure is that Nolan hasn't been as quick announcing his follow-up to THE DARK KNIGHT as he was with BATMAN BEGINS.

By October 2005, we knew that Nolan was to work on THE PRESTIGE as his next movie and both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman were already announced as being in talks for the film. This time around, we barely know what his next film will be, with small mutterings it could be a feature based on the classic 60's Brit t.v. show THE PRISONER.

Now of course this is ...

You can now pre-order the year's best film so far, the astonishing THE DARK KNIGHT which has now been given a firm U.K. release of Dec. 8th and an expected release a day later in the U.S. according to Blu-Ray.com.

Artwork is being kept under-wraps at the moment, hopefully a nice cover of Heath Ledger in a James Cagney-esque pose is on it's way rather than this fan-made one from the main poster which I was never all that keen on...

This looks to be the assembled lot of features, which again sadly does not contain a Chris Nolan commentary, though at least he does go into depth on the extra's for his movies. He did on BATMAN BEGINS anyway...

"Gotham Discovered: The Creation of a Scene" - Christopher Nolan and his collaborators unveil details on the planning of the movie, including stunt double work, how was filming in IMAX done, and information about the new Bat-suit, Bat-pod, etc.
"Batman Technology: Gadgets and Tools" (in HD)
"Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of the Dark Knight" (in HD)
"The World of Batman Seen Through Real Life Psychotherapy" (in HD)
6 clips from the Gotham Cable Premier's newscast: "Tonight in Gotham"
	Galleries

	The Joker's letters
	Conceptual Art
	Posters
	Production Stills

	Trailers and TV spots
