“We’re havin’ too good a time today, we ain’t thinking about tomorrow”, states the 1930s outlaw John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp, in Public Enemies. “No future”, wailed Johnny Rotten in 1977. “Carpe Diem”, as the Ancient Romans would have put it. The sentiment is the same throughout the ages. All that changes is the tone.

It’s that fatalistic yet brave take on life which distinguishes the generation which came up in the interwar period, a generation symbolised to some extent by Dillinger. In the 1930s “little people” all over the world took absolutely everything the Devil could throw at them – economic crisis, a stark choice between unemployment and slave wages, and the worst wars the world has ever witnessed – and generally managed to get through it all with their humanity intact. Reminding us of that is one thing Michael Mann’s new film deserves to be praised for.

Although far from perfect, Public Enemies has much else to recommend it. Its view of the Dillinger myth is very similar to the one offered by John Milius’s Dillinger (1973) – perhaps even excessively so. In both films Dillinger is the main focus of attention and is portrayed as a worthy ...

Michael Mann's Public Enemies, which I saw last night with a tough late teen/early 20's crowd whose only mumbled reaction their limited mindset could churn out was "that was boring", is in actual fact a refreshingly original and exhilarating depiction of the 1930's era of Chicago gangster crimefare, a welcomed treat to a junk filled summer.

A movie that left me in shock and awe during several of it's more dramatic and action set pieces, on the edge of my seat at least once and even left me questioning life's morality by the end.

Not bad going for an early July blockbuster, but in truth, it's a modern American classic and a real Oscar contender that should never open in the scorching heat of the summer because despite the marquee attraction of it's cast, this is never going to be a mainstream crowd-pleaser.

Sure it's got Hollywood hearthrob Johnny Depp once again playing the bad guy who refuses to conform to the rules of the world and naturally becomes the man we pin our hopes on (Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Caribbean) and yeah it's got ladies favourite Christian Bale as a single-minded, aggressive detective who will use everything in his power to take ...

Mark Walhberg, at probably the final hour for his near three year pet project The Fighter, has called in some last minute favours and probably done an awful lot of sweet talking to secure the attachment (signatures still required on contracts) of Christian Bale to co-star, David O'Russell to direct, and studio Relativity Media to finance his biopic of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward.

For a film that looked dead in the water, Wahlberg deserves an award in just getting this project back off the ground once again. The Fighter's officially back on and will begin production in July, now as a very promising picture once again.

Bale will play Dickie Eklund, a real life former boxer who turned trainer after becoming embroiled in a life of drugs and crime. As a way to make up for ruining his own career, Eklund took it upon himself to train his half-brother "Irish" Mickey Ward, who had retired early and transformed him into a Rocky-esque come back which led to three epic bouts with Arturo Gatti.

If you think it sounds a little like The Wrestler, then you wouldn't be far wrong. The movie was originally setup at Paramount for Darren Aronofsky to direct with Mark ...

Not desired for Christopher Nolan's science fiction movie Inception after working with the director on his last three movies, Christian Bale's hunt for a job elsewhere may have landed him a role in Prisoners.

You may remember we spoke about this Taken/Gran Torino esque thriller a few weeks back when Bryan Singer announced he was mulling over whether to direct it as his next movie, with Mark Wahlberg already attached as one of the leads. Now with Bale's expected involvement according to The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog, the project probably has just become much more desirable.

They also carry a run-down of the plot...
Here's the basic idea: After his 6-year-old daughter and her friend are kidnapped, a small-town carpenter butts heads with a young, brash detective in charge of the investigation. The father is a Bible-reading, deer-hunting survivalist. The cop, meanwhile, can’t wait to get to the city. Feeling failed by the law, the father captures the man he believes responsible and begins to torture him in a desperate attempt to find out what he did with the girls, whom he’s convinced are still alive.

MSN Movies have released the first official poster for Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES, the re-telling of the life of notorious gangster John Dillinger, a Jesse James/Robin Hood-esque figure that will be embodied by Johnny Depp...

The tommy gun, the suit, the leather gloves, the pose, the chicago background. It reminds me so much of one of my favourite posters of last year...

Which in turn, Heath Ledger's pose reminded me of the great James Cagney, the greatest actor from the classic era of gangster movies...

And of course you know where I'm going, Cagney led the famous 1931 gangster flick THE PUBLIC ENEMY, which actually wasn't based on Dillinger BUT was set in the Chicago underworld and was based around a Dillinger-esque figure.

On a serious note... I'm disappointed to see that Depp looks more like Depp than Dillinger. You know what I mean? This is clearly a Johnny Depp starring vehicle and is worryingly being marketed as a blockbuster action vehicle.

I thought Depp had a great chance at a defining performance in this movie and I still think he can but I don't want him to do a Tom Cruise/MISSION IMPOSSIBLE thing. Where is basically playing himself on screen.

Having said that, I have high ...

I'm absolutely in love with this trailer, TERMINATOR SALVATION is far exceeding my low expectations and from the looks of things, when all is said and done, it may well be the event movie of the Summer.

Borrowing an awful lot from Zack Snyder's way of cutting trailers (i.e. heavy action, cool camera swipes, slow mo effects and the use of a cool record to set the mood... this time Nine Inch Nails), the trailer is loud, it's in your face and it's way cool.

It also feels a lot like a blending on Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS and imagery from THE MATRIX and ALIEN in it's band of isolated survivors, the condensed atmosphere, the grey and rag-tag clothing, Sam Worthington's character of Marcus Wright being shown a reality about himself he wasn't previously aware of, just like Neo.

Though there has to be more to this Marcus Wright character right... surely no machine can have that many emotions at the timeline this TERMINATOR movie is set to fit in with Jimmy Cameron's continuity?

It's not quite the movie I dreamed of when I saw the images of the future in the first two TERMINATOR movies but let me just say I'm pleasantly surprised at ...

Last time we will talk about this (unless the web comes up with something else extremely funny).

Not a company to miss out on a marketing opportunity, Despair.com are celebrating Christian Bale's blow-up tirade on the set of TERMINATOR SALVATION by selling this parody t-shirt.

It's on sale from sizes Small to XXXL from $17.95 to $19.95 and you can buy it HERE.

I really do wonder if this Bale situation has cost him respect with other directors, especially those veterans who wouldn't tolerate such abuse on their sets. Can you imagine a Spielberg, a Eastwood, a Scorsese or a Ridley Scott putting up with that kind of thing?

Because really, Bale's just a nice guy.

Bruce Franklin, assistant director on TERMINATOR SALVATION tells E Online! that star Christian Bale's F-word rant against the movie's DP was just him having "a bad day" and that really Bale is nothing but a "consumate professional".

I say, nothing professional about calling your co-worker a "fucking amateur" and embarrassing him in front of the whole crew. No excuses and if it puts off directors from wanting to work with him in the future, then I can't say I blame then.

Here's Bruce playing damage control...
"If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove...but was the most emotional scene in the movie," said Franklin. "And for him to get stopped in the middle of it. He is very intensely involved in his character. He didn't walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed."

"This was my second movie with Christian and it has always been a good experience with him," added Franklin, who also worked with the actor on 2000's Shaft. "He is so dedicated to the craft. I think someone is begging to make some noise about this but I don't think it's fair. ...

Halycon and Warner Bros. are said to be so pleased with the work McG has done on the upcoming TERMINATOR SALVATION that work has already begun on a fifth movie in the franchise.

McG is currently working very closely with the studio in letting them know the direction he thinks the next movie should take. The plan we heard in 2006 was that TERMINATOR SALVATION would be the first of a trilogy featuring Christian Bale as John Connor.

Victor Kubicek, one half of the Halycon Co. toppers said...

"We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this,"
The announcement was made at the Dubai International Film Festival where it was hinted that the Middle East could be used as a shooting location.

TERMINATOR SALVATION opens 22nd May 2009 in the U.S. and June 5th in the U.K.

I am, and forever will be, a shameless fanboy dork when it comes to the first two TERMINATOR movies.

They signify much of what's great about movie-making, representing a confident and dynamic blend of story, character, action, special effects, drama - truly all of the stuff that makes movies so transporting. And it's easy to tolerate T3 with its handful-o-watchable scenes and solid effects, and to try and not get frustrated by its overly jokey tone, frequently silly Schwarzenegger performance, and story revelations that essentially take what's come before and rather distressingly upchuck all over it.

So I haven't been looking forward to TERMINATOR SALVATION under the unassured hand of a third-rate crapteur like McG. The franchise has been slowly whittled away from greatness, first with the departures of James Cameron and Linda Hamilton, and now without the defining Austrian face of Cyberdyne Systems' finest product, so one has to wonder just how true of a TERMINATOR movie we can expect to get.

But now that I've seen the full trailer, I can honestly say I'm excited to find out. It's a great looking clip that makes the movie look pretty terrific and - most importantly - displays little of the stylistic awfulness ...

Well if nothing else, TERMINATOR SALVATION looks a hundred times better than TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES, we should be thankful of that at least, if not a return to the James Cameron quality of yesteryear.

Without the presence of Arnie, the movie is most definitely a Christian Bale love fest. He is carrying the whole franchise on his shoulders and once again his performance looks strong. I don't think this movie looks too bad at this point, reminds me an awful lot of REIGN OF FIRE (that other apocalyptic movie Bale did in 2002) crossed with TRANSFORMERS.

Now in my head that doesn't sound good but on screen it actually looks quite promising. I would have liked to have seen more scope to the picture though and I'm worried that perhaps the movie is going to tell a smaller, more condensed "survival" story which might leave us wanting more?

THE FUTURE BEGINS IN HD HERE

And here's another thing for ya. Whenever in James Cameron's flick they showed the future... wasn't it always more interesting to see it as a really dark and ash filled wasteland?

Doesn't this look too bright to work as well?

It looks like a new trailer for TERMINATOR SALVATION will be attached to prints of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL which opens next Wednesday.

24 hours before that, Entertainment Tonight will debut the new trailer online. And before that, ET have previewed 35 seconds for our viewing pleasure. Thanks to AICN for the heads-up...

Boy how much credibility does the appearance of Christian Bale give this franchise? Him even remotely being interested in this franchise at this stage of his career has to be a sign of quality, right?

Though what about that opening line delivery? I've watched it ten times and I still can't understand what he says exactly. It sounded something like... "those hands have been busy?". Is that right?

I am anxious to see more. Though the appearance of a Transformer at the end gives me Michael Bay vibes I really don't need from this franchise.

A good two days earlier than it usually arrives at my front door, this morning I got hold of the new Empire Magazine which has a rather lazy WOLVERINE cover (I've recently enjoyed the WATCHMEN and STAR TREK ones) but that's ok because it does have a cool exclusive on Michael Mann's 30's gangster epic PUBLIC ENEMIES.

I couldn't find the photo's online yet so I've used my handy iMac webcam thingy to take the stills. They aren't great but they are the best we have right now.

Here's Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, the first "rock star" gangster who was to some the most dangerous criminal in America but to others he was the Robin Hood of a depression era Chicago.

Out to get him is ambitious F.B.I cop Melvin Purvis. Mirroring Al Pacino in HEAT, it's Christian Bale's job to track down Dillinger and his notorious gang by any means necessary and the film is the cat and mouse game between these two historic figures.

This year's Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger's love interest Billie Frechette.

Director Michael Mann talks of the similarities to HEAT with the mag...
"McCauley [De Niro's character in Heat] was on a completely different trajectory. He thought ...

The much wanted Josh Brolin has told MTV that he did indeed turn down a role in the upcoming Warner Bros. revival of the TERMINATOR franchise because he ultimately felt "it didn't feel right".

McG boastingly told the world earlier in the year that he was going after Brolin who at that point had just come off an incredible 2007 and had just seen himself cast as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's W. In the end, Brolin turned WB down and Sam Worthington instead took the role of Marcus.

“Yeah. I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours,” Brolin told MTV. “I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed. The one I read was very interesting and dark. Ultimately though I didn’t think it felt right.”
Securing Brolin would have been a massive coup for McG who already at that point had the massive A-lister of Christian Bale on his side and in great timing is now coming off one of the biggest movies of all time with THE DARK KNIGHT.

Brolin in the coming weeks with have to decide if another Warner Bros. tentpole, that of JONAH HEX, is right for him to do. I speculated ...

Dated Nov. 19th, Total Film have an image gallery from TERMINATOR SALVATION of stills I have yet to see from next May's film.

I'm guessing these have been shown around various film sites over the weekend but I've yet to stumble across them. So apologies if these are old but here ya go anyway...

McG told the mag that star Christian Bale had major doubts when he first mentioned the possibility of offering him the role of John Connor in the new movie...
“I met Christian when he was shooting The Dark Knight. He told me to fuck right off, he didn’t want to do it. He said, 'Write it so that it could be read cold on stage and I’ll think about doing it.'”
Presumably McG succeeded in making the script cold enough for him.

And on the topic of whether Arnie would appear in the movie (remember we have already seen images of him visiting the set during filming)...
“We’re trying to synthesise a human character with a CGI character and that may or may not have something to do with the T800,” McG told us with a smile.

“At the moment it’s not good enough,” he said. “And we’re running out of time.”

Following the release of a slew of highly anticipated, but ultimately lukewarm blockbusters this year (bar THE DARK KNIGHT of course), it's hard not to become skeptical about the prospect of more over-hyped franchise reinventions.

The remarkably unremarkable fourth INDIANA JONES flick, another disappointing HULK installment, the by no means staggering new bond adventure QUANTUM OF SOLACE, along with a suspicious glance at next year's STAR TREK prequel that begs to differ with the artistic choices of helmer J.J Abrams, have all gone their way to unintentionally disillusion the hefty fanbase.

And of course, this on the back of the 'shock horror' news that CHARLIE'S ANGELS' director McG won the directorial duties to revive the five year dormant TERMINATOR franchise.

Thankfully the unfortunately named filmmaker (who openly apologies for his childhood nickname) won over the assembled audience lucky enough to be granted a sneak peek at his 2009 summer blockbuster TERMINATOR SALVATION this week. The raw footage that was aired at the Vue venue in London on Tuesday evening was laudable enough to convince even the most dumbfounded that the director might actually possess the chops to pull this project off.

The tag-line is 'The End Begins' and McG delivers some exhilarating set pieces ...

In a new blog entry on the official website for TERMINATOR SALVATION, director McG gives us some updates on next year's film which he says has now finished principal photography and has now entered the lengthy post-production process.

He claims the early cuts he has shown Christian Bale and Sam Worthington have impressed the two actors and they like the direction the movie is headed in, which he claims is a character piece which is complimented by fantastic visual effects.

Some interesting quotes from his entry...
Charlie Gibson is aware of his responsibility as the VFX supervisor and second unit director of this film... there's one sequence in particular where we're trying to achieve something that's never been done before. I don't want to talk about it because we haven't been successful yet...

Most importantly, Christian and Sam bring power to the rolls of John Connor and Marcus Wright. This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.
McG also praises the work of Conrad Buff, the editor from ...
