Let’s not beat about the bush here: generally speaking, costume dramas tend to be boring and pretentious affairs which cater to the fantasies of wannabe sophisticates. One shining exception to this rule of thumb is Dangerous Liaisons, director Stephen Frears’ mischievous and engrossing portrayal of pre-revolutionary French aristocrats. Frears is back in cinema's with Chéri, another lavishly designed period piece set in France.

Genre and setting are not the only elements fuelling the inevitable comparisons between the two movies. Chéri features Liaisons writer Christopher Hampton and star Michelle Pfeiffer. Both movies are based on French novels. And each of them takes place in a period of “calm before the storm” in French history - in the case of Chéri, the Belle Époque era which preceded the First World War. Yet in spite of all their similarities the two films are very different animals.

In contrast to Liaisons, which boasted a carefully plotted script, Chéri is more of a phychological study. The titular character (played by Rupert Friend) is the spoilt son of Madame Poloux (Kathy Bates), a retired courtesan. In order to steer her son away from boredom and decay she sends him away for a bit of sentimental education with her ...

“Have I done alright?” asks Stephen Frears at the end of a ten minute-long interview with Obsessed With Film in a PR company’s Soho offices, Tuesday May 5th 2009, around 2pm ish.

The modesty of the question, spoken in an Oxbridge baritone drawl, is highly representative of the man’s public persona. Despite the two Oscar nominations for Best Director under his belt (for The Grifters in 1991 and The Queen in 2007) and his position as one of the most powerful figures in British culture, Frears likes to present himself as a humble shepherd of talents who has made it to the top through sheer luck.

There is clearly more to his success than that, but he certainly does have a knack for attracting top-notch collaborators to his projects. His new film, Chéri, sees him team up with Oscar-winning writer Christopher Hampton (Atonement) and the always fascinating Michelle Pfeiffer, both of whom put in some prodigious work on Dangerous Liaisons, Frears’ first Hollywood hit. Twenty-one years down the line they have joined him again for another romantic drama/period piece set in France.

This time the story is set in the tight-knit world of courtesans (aka classy prostitutes) of the Belle Époque, the French age ...

British actor Rupert Friend who has the corset drama's Libertine, Pride & Prejudice and the upcoming movie about The Young Victoria on his CV has signed on the dotted line for Cheri.

DANGEROUS LIAISONS was an uber successful movie for the trio of Michelle Pfeiffer (her first Oscar nom), screenwriter Christopher Hampton (his first Oscar win) and director Stephen Frears (For 18 years, his highest grossing film), so it's with little surprise that they are to work together again.

The movie in question is CHERI, an adaptation of a classic 1920's novel written by Colette a similarly bed-hopping romantic tale about the lingering effects of a romance between a middle-aged woman and a wealthy young man. The book is described as being heavy on lust, love and passion, with one of it's central themes being a women's fear of aging, something several interviews with Pfeiffer I saw last year touched upon.

LIAISONS is a movie I always felt was a little flat but it's themes were always strong and the acting and direction was impressive. Pfeiffer is enjoying a career renaissance right now and Frears is one of the best directors of adapted material working today. There will be high expectations on this after the success of the last movie the trio worked on, let's hope they can deliver.

The movie is setup at Miramax and Pathe, with the same distribution deal that ...
