I have no desire to see a Hollywood version of Chan-wook Park's 2002 Korean stylish and effective revenge thriller Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.

If it ever gets made, I would wager it'll be a fairly heavy-handed, unnecessarily convoluted, glossy thriller with a big dramatic score, and I'm guessing - a more clear sense of right and wrong with someone like D.J. Caruso at the helm. It would probably revolve around one protagnist instead of the movie's genius decision to do a Psycho switch have way through and have two.

Either that, or I guess it'll be an Eli Roth/Saw kind of torture porn picture.

I'm perfectly fine without seeing either, thank you. The original is all I need.

Warner Bros. have picked up the remake rights to Wook's first film in his near-perfect Vengeance trilogy according to Screen Daily and have sent rookie scribe Brian Tucker away with the writing duties.

His CV boasts no produced screenplays - so without a recognised writer or director, it's kinda hard to see where this one is going right now and therefore kinda hard to be enthused, because it's a studio decision to remake it, i.e. - they see cash in a remake, instead of a Martin Scorsese ...

UPDATED:
Partly my fault, partly Nicola's but now finally we have the full transcript interview that we had with Park Chan-Wook for Thirst...

How are you enjoying Comic Con so far?
It has been great fun so far, all of these people in costumes are great, and also those not in costumes are just as interesting.
How important is Comic-Con to the film?
Unfortunately I am not so familiar with the different tastes of American audiences and how the marketing is being approached for the film, so I don’t really have a ready answer for that question.
How did you come up with this unique story?
I have said that I started thinking about this film about ten years ago, but you might even say that you can find the origins of the story even farther back in my life. I used to be a practising Catholic when I was very young, so you might even say that the origin of this story goes way back. I went to church until I was in high school. That is when a local priest came to my father and said, “you’ve got to send this boy to the seminary. He’s going to be a Bishop someday.” I became scared ...

Status: In Competition

I initially missed the press screenings of this, so set off earlier today to catch the Day After Screening at the Salle Soixantieme, on the recommendation of Michael Edwards and Matt. I confess that my knowledge of Chan Wook Park's canon of work extends little further than Old Boy, which I was blown away by, though I am of course aware of the Vengeance trilogy and have set aside three spaces on my never-ending list of films I must see. So I wasnt sure what to expect- especially given that any cursory glance over already existing reviews suggests a veritable smorgasbord of opinion.

What I found was a movie heavy on style (as expected), but somewhat lacking in narrative discipline. The camerawork is sublime, and the design of the film (another success notch for Ryo Seong Hee along with Hansel & Gretel and The Host) well on par with the look of Old Boy- hence the various critical cries that this is a return to form for Park. But as with Spring Fever a few days ago, the aesthetic merit of a film cannot always hide the cracks, and it pains me to report that Thirst has a few.

Firstly the ...

Following on from one of the best movies of last year and probably the greatest vampire movie of all time with LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, and of course one of the most hyped vamp flicks ever with TWILIGHT, you might think we don't need anymore flicks in the blood sucking genre right now.

Or if your like me, your absolutely desperate to see more, hoping the new exposure to the genre will bring out some truly great and original stories. Like we hope this one to be...

It's titled THIRST and comes from Chan-wook Park whose every movie is going to come under scrutiny whether it's in a popular genre or not these days as he was the guy who gave us the immense experience that was the VENGEANCE trilogy.

So a vampire movie from the director of OLDBOY and starring THE HOST actor Kang-ho Song. I must have your attention now, right?

First Showing have the trailer for the movie which sadly has no subtitles but from the images, you kinda get the idea...

According to the guys at Youtube, the captions read...
'You shall not murder.'
'You shall not commit adultery.'
'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.'
'Bloodlust disturbs his soul.'
last line : Vampires aren't immortal. ...

Empire, out of sheer luck, have got themselves quite an interesting scope after an innocent user chat with Brit director Danny Boyle revealed that the SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE helmer has recently been offered the chance to remake Chan-Wook Park's 2005 revenge movie LADY VENGEANCE...
I was just asked to do a remake of Lady Vengeance, the one after Oldboy. My favourite is Audition.
VENGEANCE being the last of Chan-Wook Park's Asian trilogy that began with SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE and followed through with OLDBOY.

It tells the story of Lee Guem-ja who after a 13-year imprisonment for the kidnap and murder of a 6 year old boy, starts seeking revenge on the man that was really responsible for the his death.

Of course the movie is shockingly violent, extremely stylistic, beautiful to look at and clearly well made but I remember being very disappointed with it after the huge high I got from watching OLDBOY. Moved a bit too slow for my liking.

Presumably Boyle's comments hint towards him turning it down. Next up for him is probably going to be 28 MONTHS LATER.

Matt here, do you remember when Oldboy totally kicked your ass and left your jaw dropping to the fucking ground at what you were watching? That 'holy shit' moment, where you can't believe what you just witnessed, a movie that completely messes with your emotion and doesn't want to apologize about it?

Well here's a bit of exciting news to chew on.

Variety say that for the first time in history, a Hollywood studio is helping to finance and has pre-empt'd a distribution deal to a Korean movie that has not yet begun filming. The movie is Thirst, a vampire yarn from Chan-Wook Park (The Vengeance Trilogy) which Universal and Focus Features have shown great faith in.

Pic is about a priest who participates in a medical experiment to find a cure for a deadly disease with traumatic repercussions.

"Thirst" stars Song Kang-ho ("Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "The Host," "The Good the Bad and the Weird") and Shin Ha-kyun ("Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"). Involving unusually risqué elements, pic also stars Kim Ok-bi ("Dasepo Naughty Girls,") as leading lady
Park has co-written the movie with his collaborator on Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and his last movie I'm A Cyborg, But That's Ok.

The movie should hit ...
