Hot on the heels of the 2009 violent shocker Anti-Christ directed by Lars Von Trier comes another controversial ‘tour-de-force’ in Michael Winterbottom’s latest, The Killer Inside Me.

The film starring Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba has outraged audiences at the Sundance Film Festival, specifically because of a brutal scene where Affleck's character beats Alba to an inch of her life. The scene is so nasty it prompted one woman in her 60s to stand up and berate the Sundance committee for allowing the film into competition.

Her fellow audience members apparently cheered and jeered in equal measure to her comments before she storming from the Eccles Theatre. Michael Winterbottom was standing by nonplussed at the dais before being later explaining that he only wanted to remain faithful to the 50’s novel of the same name by Jim Thompson.

Without wanting to ruin anything for those of you still waiting to see this film – if your curiosity is piqued then after the jump we tell you what all the fuss was about (though spoilers are ahead)...

Seth Abramovitch from Movieline wrote in his 25.01.10 review...
"After making love [to Alba] and discussing their plans to reconvene a few weeks down the line, Lou [Affleck] ...

Poetic melancholy or deep regret? What keeps pulling me in? (spoiler warning, if you have never seen this American classic, probably the best Western ever made in my lifetime, you really need to buy this now!)

There's such a hopelessness about it, isn't there?

How a man can grow up idolising his hero, be fortunate enough to get closer to him than even his own wife and children, then butcher him cruelly down in an act of extreme cowardice, a cold blooded murderer which haunts him for the rest of his miserable life.

Life does not get much bleaker than that.

Or was the killing of James an act of mercy? Was it a suicide, even though Jesse didn't pull the trigger?

Regardless, two men died on that day, one would be remembered in popular folklore and be obsessed over, one wouldn't.

I've seen THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD three times, constantly amazed at how gripped I am by it's timeless setting, the meticulous use of historical myth and legend, the magisterial performances and just how coherent the narrative is despite the problems director Andrew Dominik had with the studio over the cutting of the film.

He aimed for Malick (the infamous 4 hour cut shown ...

Joaquin Phoenix - in possibly the most bizarre interview I've ever witnessed - "retired from acting" a few months ago to focus on a music career.
This weekend, Phoenix took part in his first public rap performance at the Las Vegas club called LAVO. He performed three songs in total, one of which we have for you below. All three were said to be awful but I can only vouch for the one below, which I have to say is indeed fucking awful...

The disastrous performance and the odd self-deluded routine from Phoenix once again puts fuel into the fire that this whole retirement thing is just a big elaborate joke to fuck with us, whilst Phoenix takes off a year or two from the big screen. Phoenix told the People Magazine recently...

"This is who I am. This is my story...Are there people out there who think I'm a joke? I'm sure there will be ... I can't worry about that."

But that maybe not the whole truth of it. Where this gets even more bizarre, is that Casey Affleck, brother-in-law to Pheonix and who you remember was present when he made his announcement that he was retiring from acting, is apparently shooting ...

Directed by: Ben Affleck

Film is released on June 6th 2008 in the U.K.

Review by Oliver Pfeiffer

[rating: 4]

Untimely and unfortunate similarities to the Madeleine McCain case deemed Ben Affleck’s directorial debut Gone Baby Gone too sensitive to under go its original intended premiere screening at last year’s BFI London film festival. Now 12 months after Madeleine’s tragic disappearance Affleck’s film gets its premiere release in UK cinemas.

But the film is more than just a routine Hollywood thriller; it’s a hardened nut of a detective mystery that proves Affleck’s got what it takes to make the successful transition from average acting player of sometime lacksure Hollywood efforts (Pearl Harbor, Daredevil, The Sum of All Fears) to sensitive helmer of intelligent and meaningful movies.

Gone Baby Gone revolves around the esteemed efforts of two romantically linked inexperienced private investigations who attempt to track down the whereabouts of a missing four year old girl, in the midst of the toughest slums of downtown Boston. Initially reluctant ...

If it wasn't exciting enough that Casey Affleck was to lead a period film noir titled The Kind One, news has leaked from Variety that the legend that is Ridley Scott will direct and produce.

It's Scott's 787th movie he has attached himself too in the last 18 months but unlike Martin Scorsese, Scott has a tendency to take no time off at all between films - making a ridiculous schedule of one movie a year so you just know he will get around to this one eventually.

Tom Epperson, the screenwriter of The Gift has adapted his novel for film. It's set in L.A. in the 1930’s. Affleck will play an amnesiac who works for the sadistic killer and mobster “The Kind One”, where he ends up being seduced and falls in love with the thug’s girlfriend, probably a hot femme fatale vixen.

It's an old school film noir and is very exciting indeed.

Scott is currently in post-production on Body of Lies, his adaptation of the David Ignatius C.I.A. thriller novel which stars Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Carice Van Houten.

It's then expected he will move onto Nottingham but the possible Summer actor's strike may put that in doubt. No word yet ...

There is a certain inevitably about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford that hangs over this film like a bleak stormy rain cloud ready to unleash it’s might onto the beautiful landscape. I will give you a clue – it’s in the title!

Not that the ultimate spoiler any film has ever been so blatantly tagged with in the history of cinema is to any determent to the final piece, if anything we get a heightened awareness of the melancholic fable. We know exactly where it’s headed, the stares into each others souls from the notorious outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and his killer Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) turn into a dance of death that becomes the final duel and fateful ending that would give many a psychological expert a headache.

Like a detective who has finished mopping up a crime scene we are anxious to know how the murder was put together and the real pleasure is finding out just what led Robert Ford into becoming the man whose grave is marked "The man who shot Jesse James".

Ford killed the often romanticised and incorrectly dubbed Robin Hood figure (let's be honest James was no innocent man - ...

Following on from his two magnificent performances in 2007, Casey Affleck has been cast to lead THE KIND ONE... a film noir from the producers of GONE BABY GONE and based on a recently published novel by Tom Epperson.

The project is currently strike locked but Epperson, the screenwriter of THE GIFT and ONE FALSE MOVE will put pen to paper on adapting his novel once an agreement with the WGA is reached.

Set in L.A. in the 1930's, Affleck will play an amnesiac who works from the sadistic killer and mobster "The Kind One", where he ends up being seduced and falls in love with the thug's girlfriend, probably a hot femme fatale vixen.

Sounds awesome to me, period film noir is one of my absolute favourite genres. Affleck has really impressed me this year and his rather withdrawn personality should make him a great noir anti-hero.

Maybe Ben Affleck could direct this too?
