"the new restart to the franchise is dead before it even begins", I wrote on a 08.11.08 in regards to the commitment that Bret Ratner was to direct the first in a new Conan series for a 2010 release, which was a follow-up story to a 18.09.08 piece entitled "Ratner the Destroyer", when his name was first rumored for the gig.

Oh yes folks, you can tell I've been dying to see what he was going to make with this picture.

The outlook is looking much brighter though today as developments this week have seen Ratner leave the project because of "scheduling conflicts" (always my favourite line because in truth it's so ambiguous, he could have been fired or he may have quit to do something else) and according to an exclusive Chud scoop, V for Vendetta's James McTeigue has seized the opportunity to come on board the helm.

McTeigue as you know is a visual effects maestro who worked as an AD for the Wachowski's during The Matrix saga and is a name that regularly comes up with this kind of gig when a franchise director is needed. He is currently on post-production on Ninja Assassin, a visual effects action spectacular which opens in November.

Brett Ratner will direct an adaptation of Rob Liefeld's 90's graphic novel YOUNGBLOOD for Big Reliance Entertainment according to Variety.

The company have paid a mid six figures to transform YOUNGBLOOD into a movie.

The graphic novel is about a superhero team that is sanctioned by the U.S. government and are treated more like celebrities than what we think of as heroes.

Ratner told the trade....
“Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left with tentpole potential,” Ratner told Daily Variety. “It was a real personal passion project for me, and a lot of people wanted (‘Youngblood’), but the amazing thing about the guys at Reliance is the speed with which they’re able to move.”
Ratner has also acquired the French graphic novel FLY WIRES and set Sylvain White (STOMP THE YARD) to direct with John Collee (MASTER AND COMMANDER to scribe).

The film will carry the title INFINITY but I've been unable to find any plot details on the web.

Both projects are expected to end up with Paramount where Ratner has a first look deal.

What kind of script can attract Brett Ratner, and only Brett Ratner to a big Hollywood production?

A bad one of course. Latino Review have reviewed Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (writers of 3:10 TO YUMA and WANTED) script for the proposed BEVERLY HILLS COP IV movie and weren't impressed by what they saw calling it "boring" and branding their vision of Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) as being a "terminator... with no funny lines".

It's been 15 years since Axel Foley was last in Beverly Hills, and screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas needed a good reason to bring him back. That reason comes just a couple of pages into the latest script for Beverly Hills Cop IV (which calls itself Beverly Hills Cop 2009) - Judge Reinhold's Billy Rosewood takes a leap out the 20th story of the Los Angeles Police HQ. When Axel hears that his former partner and best buddy became sidewalk salad he knows it wasn't a suicide and he flies to Beverly Hills to get all the facts for himself.
They say the plot isn't terrible, it just needs Axel Foley in there to make it feel like a BEVERLY HILLS COP movie.

A new draft is badly need ...

I'm happy today, I have to admit. Brett Ratner has sacrificed BEVERLY HILLS COP IV and GOD OF WAR, so he can tackle the CONAN franchise which has been set a 2010 release.

Yes, I can't stand Ratner. I absolutely loathe his work and I struggle to understand why he won't stay in this particular field and direct the PLAYBOY movie with Robert Downey Jr but instead attaches himself like a leech or a fucking rat to Hollywood franchises he has no right to touch.

But man, I'm quite happy for Ratner to direct CONAN if it keeps him away from the aforementioned franchises.

CONAN doesn't hold a place in my heart like it might for some of you guys, so I know your gonna be mega pissed. And rightfully so, because the new restart to the franchise is dead before it even begins.

The Hollywood Reporter say Ratner had been mulling for two weeks over which project he should make his next movie and yesterday he came to the decision it would be CONAN.

SAHARA scribes Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly are polishing their original script which will "incorporate some of Ratner's ideas".

The movie will be R-Rated, it will harken back to ...

We heard Brett Ratner was in talks for the new CONAN movie back in August and then we were delighted to hear last month that he was only one of a few directors who had met with Lionsgate over the project.

Now it seems, a source at AICN is confirming the sad news that it will indeed be Ratner. Bugger!

Written by Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, the guys behind the viking flop OUTLANDER... the $100 million R-Rated tentpole will re-start the franchise sticking closely to the original Robert E. Howard stories.

Let's pray that Ratner, that God damn leech, has a vision and love for the character here and isn't once again... just like he did with X-MEN 3 and like he tried to do with both the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake and BEVERLY HILLS COP IV, trying to jump aboard a high profile studio project which has a ready made package for him to earn a big paycheck.

Though I do have to wonder, how is Ratner going to be able to make CONAN and the epic GOD OF WAR which he was supposedly confirmed as being attached to in May and then again last month.

Surely it's one or the other? ...

REPOSTED, UN-EDITED AND IN ITS ENTIRETY FROM JULY 25th 2008, SO THE REST OF THE INTERNET MOVIE COMMUNITY CAN CATCH UP!

Bad, bad news for film fans worldwide.

God of War is being infected by "The Rat" just as rumored in May.

MGM have confirmed the news in a Press Release about David Self writing the Robocop adaptation...
“David Self’s credits include 13 Days and Road To Perdition. He wrote God of War for Universal, to which Brett Ratner is attached to direct, and was a writer on Universal’s Wolfman currently in production.”
Fuck!

God of War could have been this century's Sinbad - Jason and the Argonauts - Clash of the Titans.

With someone like a Sam Raimi, a Guillermo del Toro it could have been the epic spectacular that the first video game is.

Instead it's going to be more Doom than anything else. What a way to kill a franchise before it's even started.

On Thursday, we heard that Brett Ratner had been offered the chance to direct the new CONAN reboot over at Nu Image but today Latino Review offer us some light at the end of the tunnel and a glimmer of hope that he may not end up with the gig.

The site tell us that Ratner has indeed met with the producers behind the film but has not yet been selected to direct. The process is still on-going and they have met and are still to meet several other directors, the names of which they have also managed to get their hands on...

Neil Marshall (THE DESCENT, DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY)

We have heard Marshall was interested in this property before, his movies certainly have the feeling of a 80's mentality about them. I wouldn't mind seeing this guy get the chance to do this actually.

James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA, upcoming NINJA ASSASSIN)

The pet prodigy of The Wachowski's, McTeigue has less experience than some of the names on the list and I honestly don't believe he has yet directed a movie he hasn't been nurtured through but you can't deny his great eye for visuals. Not sure about his structure though, but he has ...

Brett Ratner, who it seems is "in talks" for every big studio epic that gets greenlit, is linked today with Nu Image/Millennium Films' CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

In fact, Dread Central go as far to say the offer is out to Ratner and it's his if he wants it.

Robert Rodriguez, Neil Marshall and Rob Zombie had shown interest but couldn't strike up a deal with the studio.

Just last month we heard that the two writers behind the upcoming Viking STV movie OUTLANDER had been hired to re-write the screenplay and the search for a director was under-way. That search may now be over, unfortunately.

Ratner has the high profile projects BEVERLY HILLS COP IV, an adaptation of the epic fantasy GOD OF WAR and biopics of Hugh Hefner (with Robert Downey Jr.) and Frank Sinatra (with Chris Tucker as George Jacobs) on his upcoming CV.

Hopefully he is too busy for this, though if it stops him directing GOD OF WAR then that's one plus. That movie could define a new meaning of epic and is WAY to hot a project for him to screw up.

First it was Ridley Scott's Monopoly, then it was Aaron Sorkin's Facebook movie and now Brett Ratner is jumping on the band wagon of obscure "time wasting" property to be adaptated for a movie.

In an interview with MTV’s Jocelyn Vena, Ratner spoke of his desire to make a movie based off the Guitar Hero video game!

I love ‘Guitar Hero’ and I think it’s a part of pop culture. I would love to do a ‘Guitar Hero’ movie, if Activision would ever let me. I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie. So that would be cool, to do a ‘Guitar Hero’ movie…It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the ‘Guitar Hero’ competition. One of these dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts.

Sounds dreadful.
And isn't there something so obvious about his plot statement which would instantly put Activision off the property? Why would that anyone want to watch a "small dreams come true" tale of a guy playing Guitar Hero when it would actually work better as a story of a young kid ...

The original, almost exploitational movie featured three women who get together for a ten year college reunion in the woods but soon become victims of slaughter from two boys and their mother who abduct, and kill anyone they find in the woods.

It's said that Ratner is a huge fan of the original film.

Without being able to say "Fuck", he is not the foul mouthed, slightly irritating but full of charisma character I saw in the first movie. Then again, I guess Murphy is not that same guy anymore either...

Thank God Brett Ratner is not dumb enough to go that route to try and appease a younger age rating for Beverly Hills Cop IV which he is adamant will happen soon. Responding to the comments the upcoming movie would be a kid friendly PG-13, Ratner told Latino Review...
"Dont believe everything you read on the internet. Believe me, this is going to be a hard core 'R' Beverly Hills Cop. I start shooting next year"
Look as much as I ain't a Brett Ratner fan, IF he can get the old Eddie Murphy back (which seems a near impossible feat at this point) then it won't matter so much how bad his direction is, Murphy will carry the film for him.

He is such a likeable actor even when he is playing not so likeable characters that you can't really lose if he's on board. And as much as I would love to see the actor move away as far as possible from his Tony Stark character for other movie roles, it seems to be something he and everyone else really wants him to do.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and the movie's director Brett Ratner gave an exclusive interview to Coming Soon, almost going as far as begging the actor to jump on board...
"I guess the next big thing we're looking forward to is the movie and we're hoping that Robert Downey Jr. will be portraying me," Hef revealed. "Brian Grazer is producing. Brett Ratner is directing. We're finishing up the screenplay and hope to have to be in production by the end of the year."

"Originally, in the first draft it was covering everything, which proved impossible," Hefner explained. "It would make a good mini-series. It's going to cover the launch of the magazine which is about 1952-1953 to the middle of the 1970s."

"The Rat" has hinted that his upcoming reinvention of Beverly Hills Cop which will see Eddie Murphy reprise the role that transitioned him from a stand-up comedian into a real movie star, will be kinder to those kids out there and may even be a PG-13.

The original three movies were known for there R-Rated humor distinctly with heavy swearing from Murphy. But he's older now, more restrained and this film will suit his current kid friendly merchandising persona...

Here's what the dude told MTV...
“10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”
He also mentions that it's an honor to be working on a franchise that was one of his childhood favourites and that filming probably wouldn't begin for 12 months.

So my original fears have almost been realised. It's going to be Rush Hour 4 just with Eddie Murphy and whoever else they cast using the names from the original series of films and slightly different character traits.

This is Beverly Hills Cop ...

What was I saying yesterday about Brett Ratner being a studio favourite director for franchise movies?

He's done it again, that damn son of a gun.

Variety say Ratner is in talks with Paramount Pictures to direct the returning Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 4. The movie is thought to have a mid-2009 start date, for a tentpole release in 2010.

Jerry Bruckheimer who produced the original trilogy will not be back this time, instead it's going to be Paramount's number 1 action producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

This fourth movie came about when Murphy approached Paramount during working on NowhereLand for the studio. After talks with several directors, Ratner was chosen and it's the second deal that has brought the actor/director combo together after news of The Incredible Shrinking Man being made into a film.

It's been 14 years since the last movie in the $700 million series opened but Murphy is not an old guy of course, instead it's his attitude and his career choices that have turned us off him... Murphy is not the same actor he use to be.

Then there's "The Rat" factor. We have seen what he can do with buddy comedies in the Rush Hour movies ...

Another Brett Ratner story, haven't we suffered enough?

EW have spoken to Ratner this week who has confirmed the internet rumors that he has met with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. about his upcoming Playboy movie, where the point of discussion was whether Robert was interested in playing the lead of Hugh Hefner.

Ratner says Downey Jr. is committed verbally, as long as the script lives up to his pitch...
"Robert Downey Jr. agreed to do it based on the script," the director says. "We're gonna hand him the script very shortly. He loves the character and the role and we've been meeting with him on it. So, if he wants to do it, we're excited to have him."
Covering the same ground... much?

It's only been a month since his Playboy persona of Tony Stark won a massive audience for Paramount but isn't moving into playing a real Playboy over-exposure of a certain portrayal the actor has?

I would say this is a dumb move on the part of Downey Jr... it would almost be like Harrison Ford leading movies about another archaeologist adventurer at the height of his Indiana Jones days in the 80's. I can't help but feel this one might bite ...

It's very rare these days when you stumble across a new video game that instantly smacks you in the face and screams MOVIE at you with every cinematic frame of it's storytelling and action.

Well a couple of years ago, I was delighted to say that the Greek mythology game God of War was one such title. Reminiscent of the old Sinbad and Greek classics like Jason and the Argonauts, it was a multi-million dollar film franchise waiting to happen.

However, did I think whilst playing the game that Rush Hour director Brett Ratner would be the man to bring the vision to life? HELL NO!

Now let's not get too flustered just yet, the news comes from a couple of sites which claim that Ratner has "hinted" that he might be working on adaptations of that video game in the future, so there is certainly nothing concrete just yet.

However one thing which has become abundantly clear is Ratner's box office record and his quick shooting schedule and easy going work ethic has made him become a top studio target for blockbuster franchises. So his link here shouldn't be off much surprise.

Sad because his films carry no hope of anything but complete vacancy ...

No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

This is one of the worst news announcements I have ever had to write about on Obsessed With Film. This feels like an obituary.

Richard Matheson's tragic and haunting dramatic work of 1950's sci-fi fiction The Shrinking Man (latter dubbed The Incredible Shrinking Man) - his second best novel to the amazing I Am Legend looks to have fallen into the hands of Universal who inexplicably and remarkably are in negotiations for Brett Ratner to direct Eddie Murphy in the lead role.

That fucking leech that is Ratner is at it again. And Murphy. Oh for God's sake. Why do we have to see him go the same territory as The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle and virtually EVERYTHING ELSE on his CV for the last 15 years.

Ratner do you have no shame? Why call it The Incredible Shrinking Man - call it something else. Because that's it - you can't really remake Matheson's original text as intended now - which became a shoe-in after Legend's takings.
An updated version of the best-selling novel and 1957 sci-fi classic starring Grant Williams, "Man" is taking the comedic approach to the fantastical material, telling the story of a famous Las ...

Although there was some reports last year that Jackie Chan was done with Hollywood and well Chris "Paycheck" Tucker hasn't made two movies in succession since 1997 but the Rush Hour duo have incredibly agreed to team up for a brand new movie together.

Let's just be thankful it's not Rush Hour 4...
“It’s like two days ago when Chris Tucker called me,” the martial arts legend said Saturday. “We sat down and decided we want to do another movie. Not a ‘Rush Hour’ — something new.”

“We’ve just agreed to do it,” he added. “Now we’re looking for the writer.”
I have yet to see Rush Hour 3 but are we really desperate to see these two guys go at it again?

Why not go all the way and hire Brett Ratner to direct?

We missed two Brett Ratner bullets last year when the director was briefly attached to remake Escape from New York and he was said to be on the studio shortlist for The Wolf Man. Thankfully none of them came to fruition but sadly, studio's will still develop projects for "The Rat", the definition of the studio hack.

Variety say Ratner is being eyed to direct an adaptation of the Valiant Comics property Harbringer after Paramount Pictures have acquired the rights to the series.

Created by Jim Shooter, the "Harbinger" comicbook series became a hit when published in the 1990s. Harbingers are humans with powers that can be unlocked by "omega" harbingers. Teenager Pete Stanchek finds himself on a collision course with an older "omega" who used his gifts to become an evil industrialist.
The project described in some part as being a "Young Blade Runner" came about when Brett Ratner told Paramount that he was looking to start a superhero franchise from scratch, presumably a little aggrieved at how little input he had on the direction of X-Men 3: The Last Stand a few years back.

Paramount are looking for writers right now and it's expected to be in development for some time as ...

All is not lost with the remake of THE WOLF MAN if The Hollywood Reporter are to be believed.

The trade say that not only Brett Ratner has met with Universal over the revival of the classic 50's monster, but a whole host of other experienced directors have either held talks, or will hold talks over the next few days in regards to the movie which has now been officially pushed back to a March start date.

A decision is expected to be announced early next week. Brett Ratner is still said to be favourite because of his track record of coming on board projects late and delivering a financially successful movie, and for the simple fact of how fast and problem free he can work. As a studio you can see their point but for the sake of the film's quality, please choose from the guys below (or my picks David Cronenberg and John Landis).

Those names are:

Frank Darabont (THE MIST, THE GREEN MILE, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION)

He's certainly a director that's great with period movies and characters with his three Stephen King adaptations. He's a really great director, I've yet to see his latest film but on his previous two I would ...
