$65 million for Emmerich's latest end of the world blockbuster as 2012 takes the biggest opening U.S. weekend since July's Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

2012 is actually the second highest opening for a totally original 2009 film after Up (so not including sequels, adaptations, etc). It was a gigantic hit worldwide too with a 3-day hauling of $225 million from a $200 million budget.

Reviews have generally been so-so but word of mouth is overwhelmingly terrific and the buzz around my town is that seeing the movie was this weekend's hottest ticket.
2012 would have made just as much money
with virtually any actor in
the leading role. Sorry John, but it's
true. They didn't pay to see you in
this.

One friend of mine, who is a regular reader of this site, saw it mid-Saturday afternoon with a full to the rafters crowd at his local. He was eager to point out he didn't pay to see it mind you but was taken along on a free pass or something, but anyway the consensus I got was that he enjoyed it for it was. Namely, a special effects thrill ride that doesn't care about anything other than visually stimulating your eyeballs. I'm paraphrasing ...

I can't say I'm too unhappy to see YES MAN take in less than $20 million for it's opening weekend, as some of you know and probably a lot more of you don't, I've had some problems with Danny Wallace on this site regarding this adaptation.

Though to be fair to him the majority of the criticism of the adaptation of his book is more aimed at the writer and director of the film not really knowing what to do with the good concept and the movie therefore peetering out way to quickly. I'm also rather amused to see many of the reviewers compare it to LIAR LIAR, something I said from the first day Jim Carrey got attached to the project. And I'm also not surprised that the movie isn't going to do much to get Carrey out of the slump he is in right now.

Though we shouldn't forget this is his first No. 1 hit since 2004, though even ME MYSELF AND IRENE made $24 million on it's first weekend in 2000.

The awful looking and loaded with on set problems between it's co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, festive rom-com FOUR CHRISTMASES made a massive $31 million over the weekend, that's $46.7 million Wednesday to Sunday for Warner Bros' newly owned New Line Cinema.

For Witherspoon, it's her biggest opening since SWEET HOME ALABAMA in 2002 and the movie propels Vince Vaughn back to normality after the slight mis-fire that was FRED CLAUS.

Though it really needed an opening like this. Vaughn and Witherspoon are two of the highest paid actors in the business, this rom-com was made for a huge $80 million (which can't have gone on the special effects) which no doubt will include nice paychecks for the supporting players Sissy Spacek, Robert Duvall, John Favreau and Jon Voight.

Indie director Seth Gordon (THE KING OF KONG) who makes his debut studio movie here, will hopefully have now made enough money for himself to pursue more challenging work in the future.

The critic proof TWILIGHT made $70.5 million over it's debut weekend, substantially more than enough for Summit Entertainment to quickly send out a press release the next day saying a sequel had been greenlit, based on Stephenie Meyer's second book in the series NEW MOON.

The $70.5 million makes TWILIGHT the fourth biggest November release of all time, beating out QUANTUM OF SOLACE by $3 million. Coming Soon say audience research figures show that 55% of the viewers were under the age of 25 and women accounted for 2/3rd's of the audience.

I also wonder how many of the fangirls saw this movie twice. Box Office Mojo report that for the first time since Eminem's 8 MILE in 2002, the soundtrack for a No. 1 film also debuted at the top of the music charts, these fans are as rabid as any comic book geek.

A rarity in Hollywood, a video game adaptation tops the box office charts this weekend. Mark Wahlberg's starring action vehicle MAX PAYNE earned $18 million from it's wide release, which was surprisingly bigger than the much anticipated adaptation of RESIDENT EVIL in 2002 but still only makes it the 9th biggest video game adaptation in history.

Of course to no-one's surprise, the movie killed at the reviews, a 17% Rotten Rating with barely any love for it from the top critics.

W, a movie that I thought would have gotten so much more wide appeal managed just $10.5 million after a strong opening on Friday.

Still, the movie has the strong subject matter to stay around for a while and if it reaches $45 million by it's end run, it will have been a success. Josh Brolin seems a shoe-in for an Oscar nom.

It's also the first time they have ever bowed at No. 1 and marks Focus Features' biggest opening of all time which also coincided with their widest ever release.

BURN AFTER READING succeeded with mostly positive reviews, a very fun trailer with a fun plot and an increase in awareness of the directing duo after their NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN won the Best Picture Oscar last year. And of course, as we've mentioned, the pairing of Clooney & Pitt again.

Sorry I haven't updated the box office reports for a few weeks, it's just been a bit boring telling everyone how much money Warner Bros have made from The Dark Knight.

But if you are keeping count, the movie is now up to $471.5 million domestically, which makes it the second biggest film of all time in the U.S, even with inflation taken into account as Star Wars (which includes it's many re-releases since 1977) has grossed only $461 million.

It's been a record breaking month for Batman and soon attention will turn to a sequel at WB, the most important thing seemingly is to get Christopher Nolan signed up and maybe the best way to do it is to offer him free reign and free budget on whatever personal movie he has an itching to direct next before he comes back to the franchise.

So August 18th 2008 marks a new number one and it's Ben Stiller's writing/acting and directing project Tropic Thunder which amassed $26 million over the weekend (plus a substantial $11 million from earlier mid-week showings) which ironically has now made more money than the whole of Stiller's last movie The Heartbreak Kid made on it's entire theatrical run.

After two solid weeks at the top of the box office charts, this weekend looks set to see The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dethrone the giant that is The Dark Knight and become no. 1.

On Friday, The Mummy 3 earned an estimated $15.3 million which although down on the last movie's $23.4 million, after an absence of seven years and the popular Rachel Weisz that has to be seen as a success.

If the movie can sustain, it should beat The Dark Knight to first place, though the Warner Bros. picture still continues to be a juggernaut. The movie earned $12.6 million on Friday, only 46% down on last week which puts the movie on $363.7 million domestically.

The John C. Reilly/Will Ferrell comedy Step Brothers fell a substantial 57% from it's debut weekend and grossed only $5 million, though it's domestic gross of $51 million is good after eight days for a movie made on a $65 million budget.

The only other wide release of the weekend was the political comedy Swing Vote, which opened in fifth place with a poultry $1.95 million. I really thought that Kevin Costner project had a real chance when it was first announced ...

Even though I was shoving the movie down your throats for two whole years, I've been fairly reserved on my opinions for The Dark Knight, in fact I believe this is the first time since I've seen it that I've even mentioned it.

One of the reasons why, is that the movie really needs some time to settle. Hyperbole for the movie is at an all time high right now, it's pretty incredible it is still after 10 days at the top of the IMDB Top 250 list and it doesn't look like it will budge anytime soon.

The movie and everyone involved in the making of it certainly deserves an applause...

But it is of course - not the greatest film of all time. It may be the best Batman film of all time, the best film that Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger have even being involved with, it may be the greatest superhero film ever made, and it is certainly as good as recent epics like The Departed and even Michael Mann's Heat but it is not The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, The Seven Samurai etc.

And in any event, it needs some time to really settle before we can ...

It only took Christopher Nolan one previous movie, an incredible marketing campaign with some of the most intense trailers in cinema history and the presence of Heath Ledger as the iconic villain The Joker (and yes, no doubt his tragic loss played a part to in helping the curiosity of the film) to propel The Dark Knight into the record books.

As well as the widest ever release, the highest grossing opening day, the highest grossing Imax release, the fastest selling midnight showings, the unprecedented 3am and 6am showings, the top spot on IMDB with an incredible 9.7 after 47,000 votes, a 94% rating on RT... the movie has now earned the coveted title of the highest grossing opening weekend of all time. Another record broken.

The movie beats last May's Spider-Man 3, which Sam Raimi had built with an extra title in the series and for him, the popular villain Venom.

The Dark Knight made Warner Bros. $155.34 million, which is over $4 million more than Spidey 3 on it's first three days of full release. The film was made for $180 million so it hasn't earned it's production costs back yet (lol!) but I don't think the suits at Warner Bros. ...

Will Smith's second highest grossing opening 3 day weekend of all time (the highest being I Am Legend just half a year ago) made $66 million and a stunning $107 million over the July 4th five day weekend, the actor's first return to the tentpole where he had previously enjoyed great success with the Men in Black series and of course Independence Day in 1996.

As we thought, the biggest movie star on the planet is now still very much a brand name himself. People weren't necessarily spending their money to see Hancock but an entertaining two hours in the company of one Will Smith. And if anyone doubts Smith's status as a movie star, you should probably bare in mind that this is his 8th consecutive movie in a row to gross over $100 million, a great feat considering both The Pursuit of Happyness and Hitch were tough sells.

Hancock, made on a production budget of $150 million, has already surpassed that figure in worldwide takings of $185 million - though I still think it's future as a franchise is not secured. Smith hasn't been as praising of the character or the film itself as he was for I Am Legend ...

Great reviews (near perfect for WALL*E) for both the latest Pixar effort and the movie adaptation of the Wanted comic book has resulted in a box office record being broken this weekend.

For the first time ever, two movies have opened with more than $50 million and with the carries over of so many other blockbusters it put this weekend in the Top 10 of all time.

With an incredible score of 9.3 on IMDB after 5, 314 votes (which places it 9th in the all time list) and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Wall*E made a high $62.5 million but Pixar's hopes of a really MEGA hit were under-realised. It's still joint third biggest opening for the studio of all time but with all the buzz in the world they maybe thought this would be the one that would go higher than the rest.

And we shouldn't forget this Pixar effort was made for $180 million when all was said and done. It will be interesting to see if the movie can reach $250 million+ in the competition of the Will Smith's, Hellboy's and Batman's of this world.

Thank God, Get Smart topped the weekend and not The Love Guru.

Thank the heavens.

Steve Carell once again proves his draw as one of America's top actors. The Warner Bros. remake of the 60's Mel Brooks t.v. show Get Smart opened with an impressive $39.2 million taking, Carell quickly putting the lame duck that was Evan Almighty behind him.

Budgeted at $80 million, Get Smart needed a really good leap out of the blocks and it got it, easily outbeating the kind of similar spoof... the 1997 Bond homage Austin Powers by $30 million.

Austin Powers of course starred Mike Myers and propelled him into one of the most popular comedians of the turn of the century and two big money making sequels.

However in June 2008, The trailer for The Love Guru, showed a Michael Myers who has completely lost touch with his audience and was an embarrassing return to live action movies after a four year break since The Cat in the Hat.

With his movie about Pitka, a strange Indian guru and with all the traits of an Austin Powers mannerisms, supporting characters and humor - one really does wonder why he didn't just return with a fourth movie to the popular ...

Continuing a weird trend this Summer of dueling summer blockbusters which are both finding audiences in the same weekend, both Louis Letterier and M. Night Shyamalan will be happy film-makers this morning when they see the box office returns of their latest films aren't all that shabby at all.

With a decent amount of hype, if not quite on the scale of Iron Man - Marvel's angrier hero The Incredible Hulk earned $54.5 million over it's first weekend, which granted is considerably lower than the $62 million before inflation that the Ang Lee 2003 version launched with however the bad memory of that movie lingers still today and because of that this version always had a slightly harder battle.

Of course for a sequel (which is not set in stone despite the character being eyed for an Avengers movie) the movie will have to sustain it's audience as the movie was made for three times the amount of it's opening weekend alone (and that's before added cost of marketing) and ya'll know these blockbusters need to make a significant amount of cash because they are difficult and risky productions to make.

But studio's have greenlit sequels to X-Men (opened to $54.5 million in ...

Not that I particularly thought Kung Fu Panda looked that good or anything but I'm pleased to see it come out on top over Adam Sander's latest embarrassing effort.

Voiced by Jack Black, Panda took home $60 million to You Don't Mess With the Zohan's slightly tamer $40 million. Both movies though were a big success and just like last year, the over saturation of summer blockbusters aren't hurting anything other than our wallets.

For Kung Fu Panda and the very familiar style of the almost video game replica computer animation, it's the highest non sequel opening they have produced and should easy go on to top $150 million. Dreamworks are certainly staying in the fight with Pixar and with each release are edging closer and closer to the same frequent openings as their rivals.

So in the end, Sex and the City becomes the highest grossing opening female led film of all time & THE HIGHEST GROSSING R-RATED COMEDY OPENING EVER with a massive $55.7 million.

How despicable. Sex and the City to have such a title. American Pie previously had that figure with a $45.1 million opening in 1999.

It's also the biggest live-action film opening ever adapted from a t.v. show, beating out Mission Impossible's 1994 gross of $45 million.

Elsewhere, bad word of mouth has only slightly dented Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropping 54% which results in $46 million for the three days and $216.8 million on a $185 million budget.

The decently reviewed horror The Strangers performed better than expected with $20 million on a majorly tough weekend, easily making a profit on a $9 million budget. Iron Man is up to $276.6 million and Narnia is on $115.7 million, well short of it's $200 million budget.

We all got suckered in, didn't we? If I can take any solace from the $126 million that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has made over four days, it's that it could have been more if Obsessed With Film didn't put up the quick negative reviews that we did. I know for a fact that mine, Ray and Mike's reviews put off some people from seeing the film and it pleases me greatly to provide such a public service.

The bloated film made $100 million Friday to Sunday - plus $25 million on it's first full day of release on Thursday and is expected to earn up to another $25 million on Memorial Day today.

If you add international box office to it's totals, we are talking $269 million which makes it the sixth highest grossing worldwide film of all time.
