Eclectic master of cinema Ridley Scott returns to the genre of war films, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe leading the latest crop of megastars to be deployed in the Middle East.

Unlike Scott's last foray into the US military with BLACK HAWK DOWN, his newest effort BODY OF LIES abandons the focus on the glory of the individual in the act of war and goes wholeheartedly with the 'how fucked up is this?' interpretation of the present conflict. Leonardo DiCaprio's secret agent is promoted following a dangerous mission that saw him lose a trusted colleague but gain a whole bunch of useful data relating to a major terrorist network. He is subsequently relocated to Jordan where he becomes embroiled in a dangerous mission, an alliance with the head of the Jordanian secret police, a standard love affair, and a whole bunch of lies and withheld truths that have him questioning who is really in control.

I'm generally of the opinion that films about the present conflict are self-aggrandising at best and at worst irresponsible. They are either blatant propaganda films (LIONS FOR LAMBS), mundane announcements of personal political views (IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH, STOP LOSS) or action films using ...

I don't think it's a stretch to say that we all kinda saw this one coming. Though I haven't seen Ridley Scott's latest movie BODY OF LIES yet, I will say that either him, the marketing at Warner Bros. or maybe both have produced one confusing and boring as hell looking thriller.

I wouldn't have paid my hard earned money to see it. They never really sold a movie to me, just flashy cuts, weird dialogue and images.

At this weekend's U.S. box office, BODY OF LIES took a miserable $12.9 million, well short of it's $70 million project budget which it won't make back now. It's another in a long line of failing movies dealing with Middle-East terror and continues the up and down reception Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott team-ups are getting in this post-GLADIATOR world.

Not winning against a talking dog movie in it's second week and a quick low-grade remake of a Spanish horror film, shows something went severely wrong somewhere.

Ridley Scott's movie for 2008 (seriously this guy is on one movie a year right now) Body of Lies looks so pedestrian to me, so middle of the road. So average.

There's no spark to it. Nothing that makes me go... "Yeah, I gotta see that". I'm not getting the vibe I got with American Gangster, I'm just not feeling like this is a must see movie.

And for a film with Scott... with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe that is so depressing. Why does this movie look so uninteresting?

Remind yourself of the trailer here...

I even like the plot and we know William Monahan (The Departed) is one hell of a writer but this feels like Scott trying to do Michael Mann (look at the poster, it even looks like Heat) and that is not a good thing at all.
The movie opens on October 10th (U.K.) and November 21st (U.S.). At this point, the names are the ONLY thing getting me in that theatre.

The trailer for Ridley Scott's 2008 effort Body of Lies has made it's way online.

The movie is an adaptation of the David Ignatius novel of the same name and written into a screenplay by The Departed scribe William Monahan.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars alongside Russell Crowe for the first time in 13 years when they both played gunslingers in a deadly Western "High Noon" tournament run by Gene Hackman in The Quick and the Dead.

The plot involves a manipulative CIA boss (Crowe) who teams with an operative (DiCaprio) to trap a deadly Al Qaeda leader by framing him with a false rumor to his people that the bomber is in cahoots with the U.S.

SEE IT IN HD HERE.

I can tell it's directed by Ridley Scott, still shooting many of the scenes exactly the same way he did American Gangster and I can recognise DiCaprio and Crowe trying to craft their characters but I'm just not feeling it?

The acting seems more forced and unrelaxed from the pair than usual and the material feels like it would suit a Tony Scott movie rather than a one from his brother.

Still, the story looks interesting enough. It might be a case of a undercooked trailer ...

Here's the first official still from Ridley Scott's next movie BODY OF LIES. Yes, I know... he is that far into production on another movie already.

Based on a David Ignatius novel of the same name and written into a screenplay by THE DEPARTED scribe William Monahan, the movie will see Leonardo DiCaprio star alongside Russell Crowe for the first time in 12 years. The plot involves a manipulative CIA boss (Crowe) who teams with an operative (DiCaprio) to trap a deadly Al Qaeda leader by framing him with a false rumor to his people that the bomber is in cahoots with the U.S.

It's a political/thriller and after Scott's AMERICAN GANGSTER, it should hopefully be filmed by a director who is brimming with confidence after some prior failures.

BLACK BOOK'S Carice Van Houten co-stars as Leo's wife, with the movie set to open sometime late next year.

Love this piece of casting. BLACK BOOK star Carice Van Houten has joined the Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe starrer BODY OF LIES, which Ridley Scott is currently filming as his first of two expected pre-strike movies.

You may remember this is the Dutch actress who I have been signing the praises for this year, and the woman who will be playing Tom Cruise's wife in VALKYRIE. She was also linked with the lead Bond girl role in the next James Bond movie until recently it was confirmed she won't be involved in it.

I can't help but feel she has bigger fish to fry than Bond in the future and this movie is a good start. I know I keep saying this but your doing yourself a huge injustice if you haven't gone out and bought BLACK BOOK yet. One of the best of the year, no doubt about it.

Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Carice Van Houten and Ridley Scott. That's a knockout four-some if I ever saw one. Can't wait to see some pics and trailers for this thing in the months ahead but for now we have to settle for this image that was leaked at Hollywood Elsewhere on Friday ...

It's with a little sadness on my part that Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott's next team-up won't be Nottingham. I loved the idea of Crowe as the 'good' Sheriff of Nottingham, or at least one who wasn't as drawn out as blatantly evil as previous incarnations.

If Robin Hood ever existed, the saying goes he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Well if your an honest rich man and he's this outlaw who is taking away your hard earned money... then Hood was most definitely the bad guy.

However Nottingham would seem to be on hold for the time being as shooting has already begun on Body of Lies, a movie that will see him co-star with Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time in 12 years. The film is based on a novel by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius where a manipulative CIA boss (Crowe) teams with an operative (DiCaprio) to trap a deadly Al Qaeda leader by framing him with a false rumor to his people that the bomber is in cahoots with the U.S.

The movie basically is about turning Iraqi terrorists onto each other and as we've heard already, the movie is expected to be more than ...

Yesterday's speculation that Russell Crowe had been cast in Ridley Scott's movie Body of Lies has now been confirmed as being true by Variety, although Cindy was actually the first to confirm the story to us yesterday.
Crowe will play Ed Hoffman, the manipulative CIA boss who teams with operative Roger Ferris (DiCaprio) to trap a dangerous Al-Qaeda leader by planting a false rumor that the bomber is in cahoots with the Americans.
Cindy was also kind enough to tell me I had made a mistake in my post by saying that Crowe and DiCaprio would be teaming together for the first time in their careers which ISN'T TRUE. In 1995, when DiCaprio was only 20, they starred together in Sam Raimi's super fun western The Quick and the Dead. A movie I actually have a great fondness for so it was strange that I forgot about that.

Russell Crowe is on a mission to work with the strongest actors in Hollywood right now as he is set to star alongside Christian Bale (3.10 to Yuma), Denzel Washington (American Gangster) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Body of Lies) which should make for some compelling viewing.

Body of Lies is currently going through a script re-write from American ...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott are set to work together for the first time in their careers for the middle east drama Body of Lies. The movie will be based on a David Ignatius book of the same name.

You may remember we posted an article on this project when Ridley Scott boarded the flick which was previously known as Penetration.

Ridley Scott is said to be already scouting locations out in Morocco, with Washington, London and of course the Middle East also due to be filmed. The Departed scribe William Monahan will write the screenplay.... he currently has around 89 scripts on the go, the majority of which have DiCaprio set to star.
DiCaprio will play an ex-journalist-turned CIA agent who's sent to Amman to work with Jordan's intelligence chief to track an Al Qaeda leader rumored to be planning attacks against America.
Scott has recently finished shooting the Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe 70's crime drama American Gangster which is due out in November, which we are all hoping will get the director back on track after a string of misses lately.

It's expected DiCaprio and Scott will shoot this movie before Leo stars in Revolutionary Road with Kate Winslet.
