Sean Penn has found his new lover. Well on film anyway.

Entertainment Weekly say that Mexican actor Diego Luna will play Jack Lira, a lover (one of many apparently) and one of Harvey Milk's main political supporters in the upcoming biopic of the first openly gay elected official in America, which will shoot this month under the direction of Gus Van Sant.

Jack was said to be an alcoholic and frequently seen in the public eye as being a huge embarrassment figure for Milk which led to events that we wouldn't want to spoil for you here. We try our best to keep from you any details that might spoil your enjoyment of a future film.

Although most of Luna's work has been outside of Hollywood he does have a few American movies to his name with small roles in THE TERMINAL, OPEN RANGE and CRIMINAL. He is probably best known though for playing the lead character in DIRTY DANCING 2: HAVANA NIGHTS.

Josh Brolin and James Franco were added to the project last month and Emile Hirsch sometime before that in what is turning out to be a really well cast group of male actors. EW say we can add Victor Garber (he ...

UPDATE: Post corrected after I pictured Ryan Reynolds instead of Ryan Gosling!

Universal's Kurt Cobain biopic HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN has not yet found a cast or director (WOLVERINE scribe David Benioff is currently working on the script) but Courtney Love has made it pretty clear exactly who she wants to cast as herself and her ex-lover.

And her choices and suggestions do carry some weight, because she just happens to be executive producing. Love tells The Mirror that she wants the voluptuous actress and friend Scarlett Johansson to play herself with the uber-talented Ryan Gosling playing Cobain.

To be fair to the Love, she might be onto something with Gosling. His work in HALF NELSON and THE NOTEBOOK hint at a real star actor in the making and a performance of a lifetime as Cobain would be something I would pay double to see.

But with Love's very close involvement he would probably be wise to stay away from the picture and I think he probably will, along with many of the other actors that Love wants for the movie. Johansson too is likely to distance herself from the movie just as she is for Jenna Jameson, who also wants the beauty to play ...

Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistani Prime Minister who was assassinated last Thursday, will be the subject of a biopic.

Skies Unlimited Films will be produce the film in collaboration with Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Aqeel Ahmad Ruby is writing the screenplay.

Producer Aneela Khan says a director will soon be announced before attention turns to casting.
"We have not decided yet [who will play Bhutto]. It could be someone famous or a completely new face. There are possibilities that some of the scenes would be shot in India, but we are not sure."
She adds:
"The basic motive behind this announcement is just to dedicate this film to Benazir Bhutto. The film is going to be released internationally, and we don't want to create any controversy with this film."
Recent years have seen a surge in films that are kind of, but not quite biopics dealing with known real-life figures. A MIGHTY HEART, DOWNFALL and THE QUEEN immediately spring to mind; while FROST/NIXON, VALKYRIE and the Freddie Mercury picture SOMEBODY TO LOVE are galloping toward us.

Anyone who can come up with a catchy name for this sub-genre gets a metaphorical OWF cookie!

There's a really juicy rumor that Cinema Blend have heard from one of their 'least sometimes-reliable' scoopers which I really hope is true.

They have heard that the great Viggo Mortensen may lead Slyvester Stallone's long gestured biopic of the dark and macabre writer Edgar Allan Poe, after Sly made put an offer out to the actor. Viggo is said to be interested but wants slight revisions made to the script.

Love this news.

Stallone's script for POE someone once told me was the best thing had ever written and that's no small compliment when you consider he wrote ROCKY. I really hope Sly is interested in making this as his next film and not a remake of DEATH WISH.

I don't really need to see another DEATH SENTENCE/THE BRAVE ONE anytime soon. I'm far more interested in dark character driven Poe movie.

While I'm here talking about Stallone, his next movie RAMBO has got itself another new poster. I found this over at Worst Previews...

This could well be the start of a fascinating duel between two different studio's and film-makers. This comes from Smokin' Joe's blog..
Might be going to Colombia as early as THIS WEEK. Major, major
casting news coming in the next two weeks (hopefully after Thanksgiving)
so it looks like this one might be ramping up faster than I thought possible.
Had a big dinner last night with all the major foreign film buyers and I think
they're all wanting to back 'KILLING PABLO' because they love the script
and the material it's based on. It doesn't hurt that KP was a massive bestseller
and everybody sees the upside to doing a film with the author of 'Black Hawk
Down' which made a couple of bucks at the box-office a few years back.

It was a great dinner and led to the obvious: It's time to hit Colombia and hit
it hard...

"Before Tyson, there was Liston".

That's the tagline for the Robert Townsend directed biopic of heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston which according to The Hollywood Reporter, will star Ving Rhames in the lead role.

The movie titled Phantom Punch, refers to a famous punch Liston received at the height of his career from little known boxer Cassius Clay which led to the demise of the World Champion's career. It stunned the boxing world as Liston had seldom been knocked to the floor before, and the two minute knockout from Clay was thought by many to be a fix. Those doubts were soon soured when Clay of course went on to become Muhammad Ali.

The biopic will focus on his time in prison and his ties to the mob, but the story's main focus will be the rise of Liston who only fighted because he wanted to respect.... and he became the world champion.

Rhames looks a bit like Liston, though he will have to tone down somewhat for this role.

This could be the biggest role in Rhames' career and Townsend is said to have chased Rhames down for the role, claiming he 'was born for the part' and 'had played the character before on ...

Hilary Swank has made some pretty bad career choices since picking up her second Oscar for Million Dollar Baby. Matt's post here pretty much mirrors my own opinion on Hilary.

After reading the initial story, I felt that her role in the upcoming biopic of famous female aviator Amelia Earhart could possibly put her career back on track. It's just the sort of part that she excels in.

Now I'm almost certain it'll be a return to form due to the following reasons: the project is being scripted by Ron Bass (Rain Man, Dangerous Minds) and Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) - someone who doesn't get the recognition he deserves, if you ask me - will direct the film.

Earhart is perhaps most famous for mysteriously disappearing during a flight across the Pacific Ocean in 1937. She was declared dead two years later though her body was never found. Earhart's fate is still debated today with many disappearance theories touted.

It will be interesting to see if Noyce and Bass end the movie ambiguously or shoot for a definitive answer on what happened to Earhart during her final flight.

Henry Bromell has only directed one theatrical film: 2000's Panic starring William H. Macy, John Ritter, Neve Campbell and Donald Sutherland.

In this New York Times article to promote that film, Bromell makes this remark in regards to Sutherland:-
''We were getting ready to do one of Donald's big scenes, 'and Donald says, 'You don't like to give much direction, do you, Henry?' Then he paused for a second, and then - knowing that Fellini is my hero - he said, 'Neither did Fellini.' ''
Bromell will get a chance to immortalise his hero on celluloid as he is set to direct Fellini Black and White, a biopic of the famous Italian director that focuses on his "bizarre yet heartfelt romp" in Los-Angeles before the 1957 Academy Awards.

Who will play this Italian filmmaking icon? None other than Spain's Antonio Banderas. There is practically no resemblance between the pair but I doubt it matters. Fellini is an incredibly famous director but unlike, say, Alfred Hithcock, people don't really know what he looks like. Hitch strikes up an immediate visual for many but does the same apply for Fellini?

Bromell, who also wrote the script for the film, is well known for his TV work with ...

Not content with remaking Hitchcock, Universal have set their sights on making money from the life of Kurt Cobain. Variety say they have set David Benioff (Wolverine, Troy) the job of penning a biopic on the deceased Nirvana frontman.

Someone at Universal read the Charles Cross written biopic Heavier than Heaven and saw dollar signs... not printed text. They soon acquired the rights to the novel, a writer and the next step will be to find a director.

The music rights to Nirvana and Cobain's music have not been locked down (at least not that Variety know of) so that could prove to be a stumbling block if they are to push this as a big project.

Working Title, Reveille Motion Pictures are also on board, as is Cobain's widow Courtney Love who will be executive producing. She has been desperate for a movie studio to pick up Cobain's life story since the beginning of the year.

Unlike many biopics put into production, all of us pretty much know the whole background of Kurt Cobain. 20 years ago, Cobain formed Nirvana, an innovative and highly influential grunge/alternative rock band whose hit 1991 song Smells Like Teen Spirit defined a whole generation of America's youth ...

The Black Dahlia (although a few others got burned there too), Freedom Writers, THE REAPING!!!

This is Hilary Swank, a fine dramatic actress capable of absolutely stellar performances. Just what in the world was she thinking when she was leading that shitty horror movie? How did she wind up on the set of it anyway?

With the absolutely dreadful looking P.S. I Love You on the horizon and then the comedy flick Laws of Motion, it's safe to say that she is need of a dramatic role to get her back in the swing of things.

This could be it...

The NY Post report that Swank will star as Amelia Earhart, the aviation pioneer who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and would later scribe best selling books about her flying experiences and did much to open doors for women in the aviation business.

Oh, how much better Live Free or Die Hard would have been if they had cast Jeffrey Wright in the lead villain role as rumored instead of the 'wooden' Timothy Olyphant. Granted, it still would have been a terrible movie but at least it would have had a cool face-off at the end.

Wright could have easily done the same job that Phillip Seymour Hoffman did in Mission Impossible III.

Wright, who will reprise his role as Felix Leiter in Bond 22 has joined the already cast Matt Dillon in Cadillac Man. That's the film we talked about on Monday which has gone through a quick name change from Cadillac Records.

Wright will play Muddy Waters, the R & B artist whose career was launched by the South Side Chicago Blues label Chess Records. Waters eventually became of the most influential artists of the 20th century and was nominated no. 17 in the 2004 Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

Awesome bit of casting right here, Wright is a terrific character actor who is still amazingly an unknown actor for far too many people.

As far as cool and sexy rock 'n' roll ladies go they don't come cooler or sexier than Debbie Harry in her prime. The singer/actress came relatively late to fame but quickly became the ultimate front woman and pulled new wave band Blondie up into the stratosphere.

The band cranked out some impressive pop tunes with "Atomic" and "Hangin' on the Telephone" (one of the greatest covers of all time?), a disco classic with "Heart of Glass" (I'm told this track is used to excellent effect in We Own The Night), and a rap/funk oddity in "Rapture".

A movie about Harry and the group could make for an interesting look at the New York CBGB scene in the 80s. Director Michel Gondry is on the case and he's cast Kirsten Dunst to play Harry in the biopic. When news of Dunst's casting broke there was naturally an Internet backlash and the actress responded with this statement:-
"Debbie chose me for this role so anyone who disputes this can take it up with her."

Harry confirmed to Spinner that she's behind Dunst 110%, that means she could backtrack 10% and still be totally in support of her!
"She's a really sweet person," Harry says. "I've met ...

One of the movies I'm most disappointed about not seeing this year was 1408, the adaptation of the Stephen King novel starring one of my favourite actors John Cusack, alongside Samuel L. Jackson. So if anyone wants to send me a DVD copy of the film, I would be most grateful!

Anyway, Variety report that 1408 scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will write and direct Big Eyes, a under $20 million project which is being financed exclusively by the Bureau of Moving Pictures Banner.

The movie is based on a true story and is one of many projects about real life people they have wrote for the big screen including The People vs. Larry Flint, Ed Wood, Man on the Moon and the currently in limbo Ripley's Believe it or Not!

Big Eyes explores the relationship between painter Margaret Keane and her talentless husband Walter, who actually took all the credit for his wife's paintings and lived on the luxuries that brought him. The reason his wife let this go on was because she had a self image problem, and was quite happy to hide away out of the spotlight whilst Walter lauded it up.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Of course as the paintings ...

Back in April, we heard that Giovanni Ribisi was to star as the famous German physicist Albert Einstein in a movie biopic of the genius' life which was to be shot last summer by veteran Italian director Liliana Cavani but for whatever reason that never happened. According to IMDB, that project will film next year with Vincenzo Amato in the lead role, with Ribisi's name no longer attached.

Now comes word from Variety that Lionsgate are also making an Einstein biopic, after the studio have acquired the worldwide rights to his name, as well as the biography Einstein: His Life and Universe, written by Walter Isaacson. The producers are on the look out for a writer to pen the script.

The film is set to focus on Einstein's life from the age of 20 to 40, with the climax possibly being his Nobel Peace Prize victory in 1921 for his work in Physics. His personal life will be a big part of the film, including his many relationships and personal struggles.

So we are at the very early stages of this project but it's interesting that it's Lionsgate that have picked up the rights to it. They are not a studio known for ...

It might not be the first image that has leaked onto the web of Benicio Del Toro as Che Guevara, but it's certainly the first I've seen.

This image is apparently from the second of the two Guevara movies we are to be showcased in the coming 12 months, Guerilla which is said to have been shot first, with the first movie The Argentine being shot second.

Does that make sense?

Anyway both films come from Stephen Soderbergh (Ocean's Trilogy, Traffic) and star Benicio Del Toro in the leading role.

Really can't wait for this. Del Toro looks great...

Boxing has probably been the one sport that has best translated into films over the years. Obviously there's the Rocky series, then the biopics Raging Bull, Ali and Cinderella Man which have all been successful works of cinema in their own way.

We already know that 'Irish' Micky Ward is to get a biopic soon from Darren Aronofsky in The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg and Brad Pitt but now comes word from Variety of a boxing biopic of someone a little more famous, the great Sugar Ray Leonard...
Leonard was one of the leading boxers of the 1970s and early '80s, winning several WBC and WBA championships and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. He's one of only two boxers to have been world champion in five different weight classes.
Actor/Producer Kevin Pollak's shingle Red Bird Cinema and the script from Friday Night Lights scribe H.G. Bissinger convinced Leonard that they were the right people to bring his story to the big screen as the boxer has turned down several offers before for a film adaptation.

Production is set to begin next year and just who could play Sugar Ray?

Anyone else thinking Jamie Foxx might nab this part?

Has all the crazyness over ATONEMENT died down now?

I like Joe Wright, the director of one of this year's most over-rated films. He's got a great visual eye, casts his films very well and has a passion for what he does... which is why I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with THE SOLOIST, a movie that will star Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.

We've spoken about the movie a few times before but I'll repeat myself for those new here. THE SOLOIST is a biopic of musical prodigy Nathaniel Ayers who developed schizophrenia and ended up homeless on the streets of downtown L.A. where he performed solo violin and cello sessions.

Foxx will play the homeless guy, hoping for the same kinda success he had in his Oscar winning turn playing musician Ray Charles and Robert Downey Jr. will be Steve Lopez, a reporter who forms a relationship with Ayers whilst writing an article about his downfall.

The movie to me sounds like an absolutely terrific one. Foxx and Downey Jr, two superb actors in a movie that will rely on what kind of chemistry those two guys can bring to the table. Wright, hopefully, won't inject too much ...

Back in June, I talked about how Morgan Freeman's role in THE HUMAN FACTOR, a movie which would see him play Nelson Mandela could end up being the iconic role of his career.

Well, according to Variety the chances of that have increased dramatically.

The trade say that Clint Eastwood is in talks to direct the movie and once again helm his good friend Morgan Freeman. The last two times he did that, he won an Oscar for UNFORGIVEN and MILLION DOLLAR BABY and Freeman himself won his first and only Academy award so far, for the latter film.

The film which is based on the John Carlin book The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World, shows how the 1995 Rugby World Cup helped heal post-apartheid race relations in South Africa.

There's more positive news on this one. The trade mention that the awesome Matt Damon is in talks to play the Springbok leader!

The movie is becoming more ambitious than the small Indie flick that was planned a few months back and is now in talks to be setup at Warners. Eastwood helming Freeman again, in what could be his GHANDI, is just exciting news. Add Matt Damon to ...

According to the pre-strike list that was leaked around 10 days ago, Steven Spielberg's next movie after he completed INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL was suppose to be THE TRIL OF THE CHICAGO 7, the movie about the seven Chicago Men who were charged with inciting the infamous riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

There was no mention on the pre-strike list of LINCOLN, Spielberg's much talked about biopic of the former U.S. President which is to star Liam Neeson in the lead role.

However today, Newsweek are reporting that Sally Field who has currently made somewhat of a comeback in BROTHERS AND SISTERS has been cast as Lincoln's wife Mary Todd, a women who had just as interesting a life you could probably make a biopic about her too.

Logic would dictate that Spielberg would want the movie out by February 2009 which is the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth but with the director already attached to another movie, will he have enough time post-summer 08 to complete this movie?

If anyone can do it, Spielberg can. WAR OF THE WORLDS and MUNICH were filmed so close together it was insane but still, we shouldn't think it's set ...

Brett Ratner is the quintessential studio/paint by numbers director. His films are a studio's dream. They have little controversy, little imagination and he just takes the script and gives it back to you with no fuss or problems. He just translates exactly what is given to him. That's why his name is always pretty high on studio's list when they need a director because he makes money and doesn't take risks.

Variety report that Brett Ratner has been hired to direct Mr. S: My Life With Frank Sinatra, which New Line Cinema has just optioned based on the 2003 tell all book on Sinatra and the Rat Pack from writers George Jacobs and William Stadiem.

Of course, Ratner has brought along his pal Chris Tucker who will once again get a massive pay deal for the minimist of effort, this time playing the valet of Frank Sinatra, George Jacobs - pictured on the book cover and also as we just mentioned one of the book's writers.

The movie is planned to tell all about the lives of people Sinatra encountered in his life including Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Elvis and more.
