Greg Mottola announced himself as a filmmaker-to-watch with 2007’s excellent Superbad, channelling the spirits of two well loved American directors: John Hughes and Richard Linklater. With his new film, Adventureland... the old adage goes that ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’.

A harsh criticism for a wonderful film? Not at all. Mottola has crafted a hugely entertaining flick that captures well the ideals and hopes of young people in search of love and meaning…finally siding with optimism and romance just as it threatens to end on a downer.

However (and this may be a controversial comment), it suffers slightly from having an obvious romantic trajectory. By this, I mean the love story seems to get in the way of a film driven by fun characters and their everyday shenanigans whilst working at the theme park. The plot seems tacked on to a more free-wheelin’-Richard Linklater-type of film.

By creating such an endearing band of nerds, goofballs, hotties, retards and intellectuals (yes, intellectuals!), Mottola’s film ambles along nicely until it remembers there is a narrative; a love-triangle between Jesse Eisenberg’s James, co-worker Em (Kirsten Stewart) who is having secret trysts with the married Connell (Ryan Reynolds, in a non-comedic role), who James ...

In her 1974 review of The Godfather II the influential film critic Pauline Kael stated that the only two sequels ever to improve on their predecessors were Huckleberry Finn and the New Testament. Since then films such as The Empire Strikes Back or Evil Dead 2 have belied the theory that follow-ups are never much good. Then we get something like Night At The Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian and it’s back to square one.

Against all odds the first Night At The Museum, released in 2006, was a fairly entertaining and funny adventure comedy. (Matt completely disagrees... his review from 17.12.06 being one of the earliest he wrote, calling it "enjoyable for 20 mintues, but goes flat really quickly, with a script that seems to have been churned out by a “scriptwriting 101″ manual").

The first Night at the Museum tells the tale of divorced father Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), an aspiring inventor/businessman whose failure to hold a steady job has led to serial disappointment for his son Nick (Jake Cherry). In order to win the kid over and prevent him from turning into a miniature version of his repellent stepfather Don (Paul Rudd), Larry becomes a night guard at New ...

Judd Apatow favourite Bill Hader (he often plays the supporting goofball) has co-wrote a horror movie with Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich which is set out to do what Wes Craven did with SCREAM, and to a further extent what recent horror's THE STRANGERS, VACANCY and FUNNY GAMES have done.

What happens when the horror happens to you, when the serial killer tracks you down?

Hader told CHUD...
'I don't know if it's even going to get made,' Hader told me. 'Judd met with us and said "I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie."'

'It's partially Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad.'

'It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture - this sounds really hoity toity - you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That's basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house? What would you and your dipshit friends do about it?'
Unless it's really ...

Director Greg Mottola who seemed to skip virtually all of the praise for SUPERBAD, which last year was divided between producer Judd Apatow, writer Evan Goldberg, co-writer/actor Seth Rogen and actors Jonah Hill and Michael Cera... has left all those guys behind for his next movie ADVENTURELAND.

Set in 1987, it's the story of a recent college grad (Jesse Eisenberg) who takes the only job he can get in an amusement park, so he can save enough money to travel Europe. For Mottola, it's said to be most biographical, as he once worked in an amusement park.

TWILIGHT'S Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Martin Starr co-star. The first trailer for the movie has been released over at IGN...

Looks a nice blend of drama, fun, sweet poignancy and Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig awesomeness.

/Film also carry a new poster for the movie which can be seen below.

The movie has the U.S. release date of March 27th 2009, no U.K. date just yet.
