It's fair to say old Wolf Man has had his troubles. I know it's an old thing to discuss but the loss of director Mark Romanek just days before shooting was such a terrible blow, it's a miracle this project even managed to enter the shooting stage, let alone anything else.

But that's all water under the early 20th century London bridge.

Then there was the several release date set-backs which adds up to nearly two years now since it was originally intended to debut on our screens. Can you believe the cast of this film were promoting the movie at Comic Con 2008, when back then it was positioned to be a showcase for man-made effects over computer CGI?

Oh how times have changed. A whole year of CGI post-production re-edits has resulted in an entirely different picture, one that isn't the modern day remake of a classic many of us hoped for. At this point I pretty much expected a disaster from the trailer, released for the first time today at Yahoo Movies.

The good news is, it's not a disaster. Far from it but it does have it's problems. The main one being what I mentioned above, which has now resulted ...

I said back in June that Paul Giamatti was the best actor to replace Sean Penn when he dropped out of playing Larry in the Farrelly Brothers comedy The Three Stooges, and today I'm happy to say that Hollywood agrees with me!

Peter Farrelly has revealed Giamatti's casting to The Boston Globe, but also mentions that they have lost Jim Carrey, who has decided against playing Curly despite putting on at least 50 pounds for the part. The drop-out once again leaves MGM a man short for the slapstick comedy, with Benicio Del Toro as Moe, now the only guy who was with this project from the beginning.

Now personally, if your a skinny guy like Jim Carrey and you commit yourself into putting on a load of pounds for a movie role, only to then drop out before filming is to begin - it must be because you are starting to have MAJOR doubts over how this project was coming together. A Farrelly Brothers adaptation of The Three Stooges has been troubled with production problems for years now and having recently pulled off a miracle of getting three well known and well liked actors attached, the challenge now is to keep ...

The Wolf Man has been delayed by Universal YET AGAIN, the third major release change for the movie and the studio will be quick to use the excuse of more time is needed for make-up effects etc, but seriously this project has been in development FOREVER. What more time do you need?

As long ago as last November, we wrote that Joe Johnston's flick had been delayed to November this year because additional reshooting was needed (that in itself, a terrible sign) and that the effects weren't up to scratch. They've had 2/3rd's of a year to put this situation right and they still haven't solved it!

Shock Till You Drop report that The Wolf Man's cosy Nov. 8th 2009 slot has been pushed back three months to Feb. 12th 2010, the cinematic graveyard date for horror which very few have managed to ever survive. Jason Vorhees managed it this year, so maybe there is still hope. You see the problem is it's the Valentines Day weekend and it's sappy romantic crap that usually takes the gold on that day, and to be fair if there was one weekend of the year that you can understand it happening, it's that one.

Yeah... I saw Hitch and ...

"Career suicide" is the term I mused back in March when Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey had bizarelly signed up to star in a big screen broad comedy version of The Three Stooges for the Farrelly Brothers at MGM.

Today, one of those guys has come to his senses. Sean Penn has dropped out of playing Larry, deciding to take a year off from filming, probably because he is so shocked at what he had nearly gotten himself into. The Hollywood Reporter say he is going to spend time with his family, which means he won't be starring in the Mexican thriller Cartel either.

Do The Farelly's wait for Penn, an actor who is hardly one they could easily replace, or do they say the 2 out of 3 they have in their hand ain't bad and the names of Carrey (who we presume from earlier reports is gaining weight right now to play Curly) and Del Toro (as Moe) might entice another top actor to sign up? Because at the end of the day, whose to say Carrey and Del Toro will wait for Penn?

Filming at the moment is set to begin in April for a release next year. ...

On April 1st every year there are usually a flurry of bullshit and wildly imaginative stories of impossible Hollywood castings, not so much to fool readers into believing them to be true but just to make people laugh at the absurdity of it all.

A casting story that Sean Penn, coming off an Academy Award winning leading man role in Milk and that the two Hollywood stars Jim Carrey and Benicio del Toro were in talks to play Larry, Curly & Moe (in that order) in a big screen comedy adaptation of The Three Stooges for the Farrelly Brothers wouldn't look out of place on that day.

In fact, it would be one of the funnier stories I dare bet.

But guess what? It's not April 1st and this news is solid. Variety say so.

Penn (Larry) seems to be a lock, Carrey (Curly) and Del Toro (Moe) are in final talks. Carrey... who is in such a desperate need of a hit movie right now if he wants to continue in the comedy genre after a couple of mis-fires, is planning to gain 40 pounds to play the role of Curly!

As I said last month when Film Drunk first caught wind of Sean Penn being involved ...

After the heady successes and awesome guerrilla scenes of CHE PART ONE (THE ARGENTINE in the States) I was hugely looking forward to the second half of Steven Soderbergh's epic. Would it look at how how Che coped with the change in nature of Fidel's regime from populist uprising to dictatorship? Would it look at how and why Che fomented revolution across Africa and South America? Actually, what it does is look at the in-depth world of a guerrilla fighter again - but when revolution fails to take hold.

Focussing on Guevara's time in Bolivia as described in his Bolivia Diaries, Part Two is a painful charting of the decline of a great man that gets deeply involved in the character of the man as he is pushed to the limit by adverse circumstances. Like the first half of the epic, Soderbergh is at pains to show the nitty gritty of guerrilla life. The training, the setting up camps, the hiding, the necessary interaction with skeptical peasants and the desperate bid to win them over. But rather than punctuating this with pitched battles Soderbergh merely offers a few desperate skirmishes (which admittedly look just as good as earlier battles) and bleak ...

How does Daniel Day-Lewis re-teaming with his GANGS OF NEW YORK director Martin Scorsese sound?

Variety say the legendary director is "determined" to make an adaptation of Shusaku Endo's novel SILENCE as his next movie and is aggressively pursuing Day-Lewis to lead.

If Scorsese gets his way, Benicio del Toro and THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES actor Gael Garcia Bernal (who both played Che Guevara recently) will co-star for what already is a cast of epic size.

We were told of Scorsese's interest in making the film back in Sept. 2006 based on a script written by his writer on GANGS OF NEW YORK and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE...
The story is set in sixteenth century Japan and deals with Japanese feudal lords, the persecution of Christians, the torturing of priests, and dangerous journeys.
The movie is expected to begin production later this year with New Zealand being disguised as Japan.

You weren't sure of American and English actors starring as Nazi's in VALKYRIE? How about actors from the West playing Japanese feudal lords?

It was true. Universal have yanked THE WOLFMAN from it's first quarter 08 release slot and moved it to November, where the nights are colder and the full moon falls sooner.

The change has been made to help the movie's chances and so that director Joe Johnston doesn't have to rush through post-production. He can take his time for what is said to be a lengthy edit.

Taking it's previous April 3rd slot will be THE FAST AND FURIOUS 4 which was originally to open in June.

Also Universal have announced a unspecified 2010 (probably October or November) for the Russell Crowe led NOTTINGHAM, to be directed by Ridley Scott early next year.

Variety say the weekend of June 12th looks quiet with the release of two comedies NOWHERELAND (Eddie Murphy) and THE PROPOSAL (Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds) now that THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS 4 has moved.

I just wonder if Universal fancy slotting in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in that date, just a few weeks after the movie premiere's at Cannes.

This absolutely sucks and is a really bad sign for Universal's remake of THE WOLF MAN. The negative buzz that comes with constant delays can be fatal, even if it's just trying to find a better slot for release.

Fangoria claim they have heard that the current April 3rd release date for Joe Johnston's movie is to be pushed back, possibly to as late as next fall!

So it could be a whole 12 months before we see the transformation of Benicio del Toro into THE WOLF MAN though the wise move would be Oct. 31st. From the looks of things, the move is more out of financial box office strategy than the film not being complete in time.

April is never a good time to release a movie, especially a horror one.

Though of course any Halloween date and it would have to go up against SAW VI but I'm sure Benicio with the help of Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving could take Jigsaw down!

It takes longer than you might think for the trailer of Joe Johnston's remake of The Wolfman to grab you but once it does, your intoxicated by gorgeous Victorian horror images culminating in the creepiest looking but very humanized werewolf since John Landis' An American Werewolf in London.

Benicio Del Toro looks as world weary as Lon Chaney Jr. ever did, Anthony Hopkins just like Claude Rains before him, absolutely belongs in this genre like no other actor working today.

I dare say if they remade Frankenstein and Dracula again, they would find a place for him.

Hugo Weaving I can't believe is making his first horror movie here.

Johnston is typically a very modest film-maker, it is a shame that the likes of Mangold, Landis, Cronenberg and of course the original helmer Mark Romanek passed or were overlooked for the project. But he has genuinely never made a movie I didn't like in some part (nor have I ever loved or hated) and that's how I feel about this trailer...

Though we really need to see this in HD - and fast, before we can make a fully informed opinion.
The Wolfman opens April 3rd 2009, hopefully with a new Blu-Ray transfer of the original ...

Ok, because you guys have frequently talked about this movie being shown at Cannes in the comments section, here's a little update for you on the current status of the epic biopic of Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara.

Both back-to-back Stephen Soderbergh shot biopics The Guerilla and The Argentine were shown as one 4 hour and 18 minute length feature titled CHE which was only broken up by an intermission (only one credits sequence) and it quickly became the festival darling of the critics, who now expect the director to easily walk away with the Palm d'Or prize.

Great reviews from Cinematical...
Che is everything a biopic should be, and del Toro's performance is nothing short of astounding. And yes, the film needs to be that long, and it needs -- MUST -- be shown elsewhere just as it is here; not as two separate films, but as one epic masterpiece with a brief intermission between Cuba and Bolivia.
Jeffrey Wells...
The tale is the tale, and it's told straight and true. Benicio del Toro's Guevara portrayal is, as expected, a flat-immersion that can't be called a "performance" as much as...I don't know, some kind of knock-down, ass-kick reviving of the dead. Being, not ...

Benicio Del Toro and Hugo Weaving look as if they on the set of a sequel to the 2006 thriller The Prestige!

Of course we all know better than that. It's the remake of The Wolf Man which is well into filming right now. These images come from the Gazette & Herald where some 300 fanatics were present to watch the filming of scenes in Lacock, Wiltshire.

And listen to this little description...
Much of the filming was shot inside the Tithe Barn where huge blocks of ice and models of dead bodies where strewn across the floor and hanging by metal hooks.
Gruesome!

Weaving just looks so amazing in that attire.

Love it.

Benicio del Toro is The Wolf Man!

I haven't been this excited over a classic 50's style horror movie since Van Helsing, a movie which of course featured a really crappy and lame version of this legendary character.

That kind of crap would never have ventured into a Mark Romanek movie. But now he's gone, let's hope new helmer Joe Johnston has the same mentality.

Unfortunately, it's still over a year to go before this guy see's the light of day...

It's not only tiring being a cursed werewolf by night but it's also kinda bloody.

First image from the U.K. based location of The Wolf Man, a remake of the classic Universal horror picture which is now being directed by Jurassic Park III and Jumanji's Joe Johnston after Mark Romanek bailed on the project at the last minute.

The great cast of the movie also includes Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving and is due out in around 14 months time.

Nice to know this project is back on track after the change of director halted the shooting date. Let's hope we get some clearer photo's soon.
