Despite "The Final Destination" opening last summer, which you would think by definition would signal the finale to the already two movies over-done "death is stalking you" slasher franchise; WB President Alan Horn announced plans for a fifth Final Destination movie at ShoWest out in L.A.

The movie, which I'm guessing will be titled Final Destination 3-D is being made because “we can’t resist”, says Horn. Of course he is speaking for himself because I resisted seeing the fourth movie last year, didn't you?

/film say Horn followed up with two further announcements of unsurprising news.

One, all the studios tentpole movies, superhero films, and big special effects releases, will be distributed in 3D as it is the "studio standard" now. He included Chris Nolan's Batman 3 in this statement.

And secondly, Horn mentioned that WB would be filling the massive financial revenue gap in the absence of the Harry Potter movies when the last film is released next summer, with more comic book tentpoles. As I say, who didn't see this coming?
“As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC [Comics] Library!”

Alongside Green Lantern, Batman 3, Superman reboot - this presumably means adaptations of The ...

Finally, someone got Chris Nolan to talk!

Good old Geoff Boucher at the L.A. Times - just about the only guy the mysterious Nolan speaks to these days and I guess this will have to keep us going until Inception is released this summer. Still there's alot to chew on, including the first official quotes on his Superman take, so let's get straight to it.

First up, Nolan confirms he is the "Godfather" of the new Superman reboot;
“It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story... And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.”
He goes on to confirm that David Goyer, his Batman Begins scribe is writing the screenplay for The Man of Steel right now...
“We’re approaching it... in terms of trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films...I think David’s approach is a very good way of doing just that.”
MUCH MUCH MORE ON SUPERMAN & BATMAN 3 - including who is writing what, and which major villain won't appear in what sounds like the end of Nolan's Bat-story...

Goyer is actually the ...

Apologies for my Nikki Finke-like jubilation but three further updates late tonight (it's 3.13am now U.K. time and I'm hoping I can put this story and indeed myself to bed) pretty much confirm what I've been writing all day, and in some fashion - for four months.

IESB confirm that Goyer/Jonathan Nolan have completed at least a first draft of Batman 3. Remember - Chris Nolan will direct too, there's no need to speculate otherwise, if you do - you haven't been watching developments closely enough.

IGN UK confirm what I correctly predicted below as soon as the story hit - Chris Nolan has also brought on board his brother Jonathan Nolan to scribe alongside Goyer, the same team that will bring us Batman 3...
Goyer is in fact on the project, but not only that -- his The Dark Knight co-writer Jonah Nolan will also be scripting Superman: The Man of Steel along with him. Nolan's brother Christopher is expected to only executive-produce, and not direct, the film. That said, he will be "hands-on" as a producer. Since the Superman film is under the gun because of the ongoing legal entanglements involving the property, Warner Bros. wants the pair to get started ...

Batman on Film reports that things are already happening in Chicago in preparation for the arrival of Chris Nolan and crew for Batman 3, with Jett hearing that location scouting is already underway...
"[They] have been out and about in Chicago's Financial District."
Chicago is of course the home of Gotham in Chris Nolan's Bat-universe and was heavily used in both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

This news comes on the same-day that The Moving Image reported a further tidbit from a member of Nolan's who is working on Burke & Hare up in Scotland this week...
I forgot to mention that he also said sets were either being constructed, or will soon be constructed, for the third Batman, with the possibility of shooting toward the end of the year. He also said that they were coming under budget at the end of The Dark Knight, so they built a whole extra set (possible usage in the third film).
I would say the end of the year might be a little soon for filming but certainly Spring 2011 seems likely for a Summer 2012 or 2013 release.

As I keep saying, Batman 3 is a lot further along than the quiet down time at Warner ...

Batman On Film guest contributor Mark Hughes wrote on 23.01.10 in a piece titled "Why and How The Joker CAN return in Batman 3" that nicely compliments my own from two days ago, in regards to the probable re-use of The Joker in next Christopher Nolan directed Batman movie;
"A subplot about this aspect of the Joker as he relates to Batman and Gotham could be an important addition to the storyline... We need not see an entire new storyline about the Joker menacing all of Gotham. The Joker as a supporting character, much like Lecter's role in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was not the main plot but instead the most important narrative element making up subplots and character arcs".
In an Oscar winning performance for Best Actor in the Oscar winning movie Silence of the Lambs - British thesp Anthony Hopkins is famously only on screen for 16 minutes of screentime but is the crux of the narrative, helping our protganist Clarice Starling's murder case because she does not insult his intelligence and arouses a kind of sexual affection for her.

Even though the most memorable scene of the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight took place inside a prison cell between Batman ...

Nikki Finke says that David Goyer's decision to quit as showrunner on ABC's Flashforward is so he can work on writing the script for Batman 3 with co-scribe Jonathan Nolan. Goyer said in a statement...
"As my feature projects have started ramping up again, I felt I was being pulled in too many directions,"
I think Chris Nolan will want to start his development on Batman 3 post-July time, a little after Comic Con and Inception's release. And if it's sooner, then all the better.

Something tells me that the Batman 3 itch has been scratched on sleepless nights by Goyer and Nolan for a while now now and they are probably further down the road than you might think on the script. I would expect them to have the major themes, the villains, the important scenes already mapped out. I mean we've all been doing that too in our own heads, right?

So in brief - Goyer and Nolan will probably be writing the script for Batman 3 over the next five/six months. During that time, we should hear of Chris Nolan's official announcement that he will direct another, and sometime in the summer pre-production will begin. The film will shoot 2011 ...

I've got about three minutes to type this up, and it's pointless me trying to write up a news story - so I just thought I would leave you guys with something to think about and potentially discuss.

There's been much back-and-forth discussion among fanboys for two years now (yes, even before we saw The Dark Knight) over whether The Joker should return in any future Batman movies, but I have never really given any indication of where I stand on the dilemma - except to say that it's a tough one to call.

Here's what I think, in a nutshell. A 3 minute nutshell at that...

The Joker is smart, too clever, too one step ahead of anyone else with seemingly unlimited resources and back-up plans to be stuck inside Arkham Asylum for long. The duration of his jail time you feel is entirely up to him.

So at some point, whether it's Chris Nolan's creative team or whatever, they are going to have to bring him back. And if it's in the next movie, then I truly have no problem with it - AS LONG - as the story told isn't a Joker centric story. Because there ain't no beating The Dark ...

Ok, so presuming that this big annoucement we are waiting for in January from the newly formed DC Entertainment will include news on the proposed third Batman movie, and presuming that Chris Nolan has indeed agreed to return, then I have a few guidelines of ideas I wanna see improved on, expanded or freshly introduced come game time on Batman 3.

Personally it should be said that I think in the coming weeks Warner Bros. will announce the next movie, but won't say whether Christopher Nolan is returning or give us a firm start date. They may roughly say they want it out by 2012/13, but they won't give us firm details I wouldn't have thought, not yet anyway.

With that said, here's my guidelines for the future...
More Gotham Central

The Dark Knight did something I had been wishing all the previous Batman movies had - and that was introduce Gotham Central - i.e. the wider unit of the Gotham Police Department, the team that Jim Gordon is in control of. In The Dark Knight they gave us the corrupt Det. Wuertz, Det. Ramirez and Det. Stephens, the one cop who Gordon can trust. I wanna see this expanded on in the next ...

It's been four months since I have meaningfully written about Batman 3, a movie that most definitely WILL happen sometime over the next four years but as of 26.10.09, some 15 months after The Dark Knight was released in theatres, frustratingly, we are absolutely no closer to seeing the caped crusader back on our screens.

However my childlike impatience aside, the smart side of my brain is convinced that allowing breathing space for The Dark Knight and the whole Heath Ledger/Oscar microscope will only benefit the longevity of this compelling mainstream movie franchise. After all, despite the fact we haven't had as much as a breadcrumb of solid information to go on for well over a year now, anticipation for the next outing for these three guys is a hot as ever...
Chris Nolan, Michael Caine and Christian Bale, the three figureheads of the current

The Dark Knight, the second highest grossing picture of all time.
A LITTLE INCEPTION KEEPS NOLAN BUSY

Gary Oldman may be playing us for fools, but during the Comic Con panel for his upcoming Denzel Washington apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli, Commissioner Gordon himself claimed that production is ramping up on Batman 3 to shoot next summer, with the film coming out as early as 2011.

Which contradicts all the official and unofficial scuttlebutt we have been hearing in the 12 months since The Dark Knight took over the summer of 2008. Oldman officially said...
“The next batman is next year, so I think it is two years away. But you didn’t hear it from me.”
Which is about as far and away from the usual answer of "well it depends what happens with Chris" which everyone involved in the series has answered with when inevitably cornered by journalists wanting to get this kind of scoop.

Is Oldman telling the truth, has he got his wires crossed?

Is Nolan on board... could he even possibly be on board considering he is mega busy on Inception, hardly a small sized flick. Of course it's feasible, but he would have to move onto the film straight away. Guess we'll find out later today as Quint from AICN has one-on-one time with Nolan, and he's already mentioned he is ...

Scenario:
You are the head of Warner Bros. Comic Book Movies are huge business but your track record of producing them hasn't been consistent or stellar, with the exception of Watchmen and the Batman franchise. You watch with envious eyes as Marvel position themselves to a platform where they can release as many as six movies per year in the very near future, if their blueprint for success turns out the way they have planned.

2011 alone should see Spider-Man 4, Captain America and Thor, with possibly more TBA.

Marvel are winning the race but you have the Batman ace up your sleeve, a character who is possibly the most popular protagnist in the history of film. But you are starting to get nervous. Your director Christopher Nolan is seriously considering his future with the franchise, he may be ready to move on - you may be about lose your biggest asset. Christian Bale also begins to get cold feet too and is now confused over what is going on with the series.

Usually, the site is more trustworthy than official sources themselves.

After a long bit of downtime in this film's development (mainly because Nolan has put his attention to Inception right now), Jett received an email from a trusted industry source late last night who told him a couple of news tidbits which should carry a health warning to any die hard Batman fan who may be suffering from a dodgy heart.

FIRST: That the death of Heath Ledger rocked Chris Nolan so much to the core that he was convinced in the months leading up to the release of The Dark Knight that he was done with this series and wouldn't return for a third movie. The original plan was to include The Joker in the third movie, but the source doesn't indicate whether this was before Heath Ledger's death.

Chris Nolan will soon be spending several months in the company of the charming, beautiful and highly talented Marion Cotillard this summer, as last week we heard she had been cast in his original science fiction movie Inception.

The significance of the time spent with Cotillard on his future casting decisions may become evident when pre-production really kicks in for Batman 3, because Cotillard fits all the criteria that you would be looking for in a Selina Kyle.

Aka a Catwoman, if you will.

She has amazing femme fatale eyes. The kind that even Bruce Wayne who won't want to fall for a woman again after losing Rachel, will be hopeless to resist. In July we shall see her tame and fascinate Johnny Depp's notorious gangster John Dillinger and help drive crazy Daniel-Day Lewis' film director with her beauty in Nine.

She is that kind of special creature of feminine perfection. The ones that Raymond Chandler and Ian Fleming would write about.

She has a feistyness about her but also the down to Earth, girly natural laugh that Selina has in everyday life. Or at least she did in Batman Returns. Physically she is good (tall, in shape and flexible, a natural beauty) and well, we know she ...

Jett from Batman on Film, easily the most authoritative voice and with the closest contacts to Warner Bros. to know exactly what is going on with the next installment of the Caped Crusader wrote last week that he doesn't expect to see another live action Batman movie till 2012.

That's one year later than when we thought the movie could have opened, when we initially pondered it the day after THE DARK KNIGHT was released back in July.

Jett's reasoning of course being Chris Nolan's new science fiction movie INCEPTION which we now know is likely to star Leonardo DiCaprio when it begins filming in June. So really just looking at the numbers alone, it doesn't seem possible to have BATMAN 3 ready for 2011, because that would be two very large productions in a very implausible two year time period.

Just not going to happen. Anyway here's Jett with an update on his message board...
at this moment based on the timeframe for INCEPTION and what I've heard from insiders (Maybe I know people who'll be working on B3, you know. ), B3 is going to be a Summer 2012 release.

Frankly, the only way it'll be a 2011 film is if Nolan declines (he hasn't) ...

... an original sci-fi thriller he wrote titled INCEPTION, which he be produced by his wife and THE DARK KNIGHT producer Emma Thomas. The story broke in tonight's The Hollywood Reporter.

INCEPTION is described as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind."

I'm not quite sure what the hell that means but it sounds absolutely fantastic and I can't tell you how delighted I am to see Nolan join the number of high profile directors tackling sci-fi right now, a genre in great need of a boost.

INCEPTION will shoot this Summer and all being well should hit theatres mid-2010. This will be one of Warner Bros. biggest movies of next year as they currently have no comic book movie set for release (everyone doubts a proposed GREEN LANTERN could be ready in time).

As expected, Nolan doesn't wanna be seen as just the BATMAN guy and is once again helming a movie in between two Warner Bros. smash hits. It mirrors what he did with his smaller, more personal project THE PRESTIGE which began casting almost immediately after BATMAN BEGINS hit cinemas.

Though INCEPTION sure doesn't sound like just a small flick.

You all know I'm the biggest Batman fan around ...

Sure it's obvious, especially in the post-BATMAN RETURNS, SUPERMAN RETURNS and THE MUMMY RETURNS universe and yes, it is a complete rip-off from the title Frank Miller used in the 80's for the most important Batman graphic novel of all time, but, I still say this is the title to use.

If Warner Bros. want to make another $1 billion, then what could be better to arose interest? After THE DARK KNIGHT and how incredible that movie was this year, who wouldn't be having wet dreams over a title like THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS?

Though at this point any other title is impossible to predict as whatever they choose it will have to relate to the theme of the film as mapped out by Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer. And so it's a fruitless exercise really at this point as officially no third movie has even been announced yet.

Though BATMAN R.I.P. would have been a devilishly cool and fascinating title for the end of Nolan's trilogy. BATMAN FOREVER was always a cool title, shame that can't be used though I wouldn't mind seeing BATMAN return to the title. Hell, if they are struggling what about just BATMAN or THE ...

In the first part of a three arc interview with the Los Angeles Times, Brit director Christopher Nolan begs the question, "How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?".

It's a solid question and his perfect legacy so far with the character is something he wants to keep in tact, whether that means stopping now with the franchise or making sure if he was to do another movie... it's a story that will keep him interested for over two years to tell.

You can certainly see why history is against him. THE DARK KNIGHT was compared to THE GODFATHER PART II or THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Neither of those franchises recovered from how good those movies were and when you watch THE DARK KNIGHT... they threw all the eggs into that basket right there. How can anyone top or improve that, can it be done?

Nolan clearly wasn't thinking about the future. He was out to make the best film possible and that's probably why he succeeded where so many have failed. on the second throw of the dice. He thought big and delivered big. One of the biggest films of all time.

Nolan, who has been quite quiet since it's ...

I guess I can't avoid this story when Production Weekly, a trade magazine no less with many inside studio sources, have this week listed BATMAN 3 on it's development site with Chris Nolan's name attached to direct.

Presumably that means he has scribed his signature on the next film's contract. It's also claimed that pre-production will begin in February, which is a good six months earlier at least than the time between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

Does this count as the official confirmation that we were waiting for?

I would suggest it certainly indicates that Nolan might not be directing another film between BATMAN 2 and 3 and what we do know for sure is that Nolan hasn't been as quick announcing his follow-up to THE DARK KNIGHT as he was with BATMAN BEGINS.

By October 2005, we knew that Nolan was to work on THE PRESTIGE as his next movie and both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman were already announced as being in talks for the film. This time around, we barely know what his next film will be, with small mutterings it could be a feature based on the classic 60's Brit t.v. show THE PRISONER.

Now of course this is ...

Matt here…

I absolutely loathe posting about rumors, I only do it if there is a logical reasoning for it and/or a good chance that's it likely to be more true than not. And those occasions come very few and far between.

For all those reporting on this story as if it's gospel, let me just remind you guys of how unreliable actors are when it comes to using them as news sources. Having you just heard that Derek Luke basically lied through his back teeth about Will Smith being considered for the Captain America role over at Marvel.

Now I'm not about to call Michael Caine a liar over his comments about Batman 3 villainy casting but I'm convinced there is a bit of playfulness here when he was speaking to MTV...
“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make [a sequel to The Dark Knight]?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘Shit, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]
But then in the same ...

So we've already discussed at length the pro's and cons of who the next villain should be in the inevitable sequel to the $614 million worldwide (and still growing) biggest comic book film of all time The Dark Knight, where hopefully Christopher Nolan will still have enough interest in the Batman character to tell us one more story.

Personally on reflection of seeing The Dark Knight, I would probably go for The Penguin as a heightened version of the kind of supporting character that both Eric Roberts and Tom Wilkinson played in the previous two movies. I would possibly bring back both Maroni & Falcone... and maybe have a three gang warefare as taken from the story arc in The Long Halloween.

I would certainly look at bringing in Talia Al Ghul, I think the next movie really does call for her presence. Bruce you have to believe will be needy in this time of Batman being more of an outcast than ever before... he would more likely be seduced by the femme fatale, you have to believe it will be either her or Catwoman.

Two-Face seems a big possibility, if he ain't dead there is still a lot of room for the ...
