Late to the party as ever, I decided to tie this Top Ten in with the recent release of the first Avatar teaser and the hype and debate that has ignited off the back of it.

The revolutionary Avatar, whether instant classic or expensive mistake, will be warmly welcomed into public consciousness by yours truly as it will mark the return to the big screen after a twelve year absence of one of my favourite writers and directors of all time: Mr. James Cameron.

Cameron has long been a cinematic visionary and has helped shape modern cinema as we know it, yet he doesn’t always get the credit and/or recognition he deserves.

So with Avatar right around the corner, here are ten reasons why we should all be very excited about the return of James Cameron, as we count down the Top Ten Works of James Cameron.

#10
Rambo: First Blood Part II
(1985)
Writer

Granted, to make this into a Top Ten I’ve had to include some tenuous Cameron movie involvements, but I couldn’t very well include Piranha II: The Spawning could I? (As much as I would have liked to).

So, sort of a cheat including this here, as Stallone basically ate Cameron’s script for Rambo: First ...

I’d never been to an IMAX screening before. They’re massive screens aren’t they? Almost like an entire wall…a tsunami-like wave…where images threaten to pulverise the audience. And this seems to be James Cameron’s intentions for the 3-D release of his latest film Avatar. It is pure Cameron: loud, brash, macho, stupid and occasionally breathtaking. A publicity representative gave a little speech before the film and completely stone-faced said: “This could be the greatest film of all-time.”

The entire audience laughed. Quite audibly.

The fifteen minute clip introduces the character of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) on a spaceship with a startling, albeit, much more expensive-looking set design reminiscent of Aliens (1986).

There’s even cryogenic sun-bed-type thing. And Sigourney Weaver plays a doctor!

The rest of the preview footage is set on the alien planet, Pandora and introduces the Na’vi beings who look, quite frankly, like they belong in an Xbox 360 game…or something like that. There are also dinosaur-type beasts and flying dragons too. It is all remarkable looking and yet strangely distancing. Asking the audience to emotionally invest in a story of cartoon-looking giant blue aliens…it is a bit mad, and I’m sure Cameron is holding some wonderful stuff back for the big release. ...

OWF's Martyn Conterio is back with another quick report from a screening he attended yesterday. This time there's no embargo as an excuse for why there isn't a full write up. Just plain laziness, rather sleep than write-up about the movie, kind of attitude.

Should I fire him?
I saw it at the IMAX this evening...I actually felt sick after it...not just because of the awful dialogue...but if Cameron thinks a film that looks like an Xbox game is the future of cinema...then he's mental. The swooshing camera and blurry photography made me sick...something I haven't felt in a cinema since I saw Irreversible.
Anyway I've told him to get his ass together and write up a full report. But it's the weekend, so you might have to wait a while. Until then The Playlist have about as detailed a look at the footage as you're probably going to find.

After a tirade of technical issues which blighted what should have been the pain-free debut of Avatar, the last big movie spectacle of the decade and James Cameron's first feature film since Titanic, you can finally watch the trailer hitch free. But honestly, you are set for dissapointment. It's available at Apple or HERE and HERE. Just remember you can't ever go back from this moment. You will forever think of Avatar the way this trailer depicts it. Good luck!

You may have to forgive me for being a little harsh on Jim but for months on end he has been using phrases such as "game-changer", "cutting edge" and the "future of film-making" when referring to Avatar but really, it just ain't all that, is it? Based on this evidence it's not going to radically change anything when it opens on Dec. 18th.

Sure, Avatar looks (and remember that's mostly all we have to go on here because the trailer contains only one line of dialogue and no explanation of the plot/world we are witnessing) to me like I will get my money's worth and compared to the rest of what Hollywood is spending money on these days it looks like a ...

The first real important set of images have been released from James Cameron's Avatar, and well - they just don't really feel that important!

I'm too distanced from this movie right now. I barely know what it's really about (I know the plot but not it's substance), I don't care about these characters, it's just a bunch of boring images of actors in different locations. And the "money shot" image of the bunch showing the first glimpse at the huge battles we have been promised, just looks like it was translated directly from a video game or from the Lucas Studio.

Hopefully they will look better in motion.

Later today, at 7am EST (lunch time ish in the U.K.) the teaser trailer will hit online, one full day before the Avatar special 15 minute 3-D IMAX screenings across the world.

I'm not 100% sure this is the first poster from James Cameron's Avatar, I vaguely remember seeing a site post this around the time of Comic Con - but I can't be sure.

I've actually purposefully tried NOT to post too much about the much anticipated 3-D epic that is coming this fall, mainly because I wanna be amazed and unspoilt when it opens. The less I know, and I can guarantee it'll be the same for you, the better.

For now I'm quite happy just to see little glimpses and previews. I don't need anything heavy. In fact, if I had it my way, I would quite happily not even see a trailer for this thing. Wouldn't that make a welcome change?

Full poster of Zoe Saldana as the blue creature Neytiri after the jump and thanks to Latino Review for the heads-up...

They've waited over ten years to slap "From the director of Titanic" on a big tentpole movie, so we have to congratulate them for that, even if Terminator, Terminator 2, The Abyss and Aliens belong in the sci-fi genre this film encapsulates.

Avatar opens Dec. 12th and if I were you, I would avoid EVERYTHING for this movie. Trust me, you'll enjoy it ...

"I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated--even knowing that the 9-ft.-tall blue, dappled dude couldn't possibly be real" said Josh Quittner regarding some footage of AVATAR he saw recently for Time Magazine.
The scenes were so startling and absorbing that the following morning, I had the peculiar sensation of wanting to return there, as if Pandora were real.
Now if you're a film fan, that's the quote that gets you excited for AVATAR, James Cameron's over ten year in the making 3-D science fiction epic that will hit screens in December.

But if you're a guy who likes to follow the business side of the movie industry, the same piece in Time Magazine casually blurt out the information that over a thousand people have worked on putting the $300 million movie together, which easily makes it the most expensive film of all time.

Previously Fox had stated the movie would cost $200 million.

Currently the most expensive film of all time is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END which a few years ago was made for $300 million. But AVATAR's $300 million comes before the expensive marketing, advertising and distributing stage.

In same article, which is well worth your time... Cameron insists every ...

"the rumor mill is grinding out mostly spurious stuff", says James Cameron on the rumor that he has already rejected EIGHT trailers for AVATAR because he wasn't happy with the way they depicted his movie.
…I have no idea where that [rumor] came from but I haven’t rejected any trailers (yet) since I haven’t seen any yet. They’re still workingon them for presentation, which presumably will be soon.
Personally, I'm delighted that we know virtually zero about James Cameron's first feature film since TITANIC some nine months before it's release.

Too often we know way too much about upcoming movies, and of course I'm guilty of this too ploughing through any scripts that I come across and daily, telling you more information than you probably ever need to know about any given movie, but to do you remember when you saw CLOVERFIELD? When you knew virtually nothing about it? Do you remember how great that feeling was?

How rare the "not knowing" is in this industry.

How privilaged we are to have a movie that we can only imagination what it will look like at this point, it's not been spoon-fed to us. We don't know every beat of the movie from the trailers, like say ...

I'm Jonay Bacallado, the author of the images. They are part of my artwork, my personal artwork, and it has nothing to do with the actual concept art of the film. The interview has been removed from www.plansiete.com as well, I've spoken about his incident with responsibles of the program, because information it's not accurate, and things can be misunderstood. Please, I have to ask you to remove this information, because the images shown are part of my own portfolio, no one has asked for authorisation, and of course, and most importantly, those designs have nothing to do with the real concepts and designs. I spoke during the interview about my experience, images were taken from my website, and they asume they are real concept art, but is not. The editing odf the video is quite confussing and may lead people to think it's the real concept art done, but it's not!!!
Probably the project we are gleefully excited to see any kind of of footage for is James Cameron's 3D sci-fi movie AVATAR and how exciting it is to stumble across an image like the one below at AICN...

A close up of the image indicates that the footage, probably a trailer, is 3:57 minutes long.

Though it could also be a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the movie or instead maybe four full minutes of footage. Or it could easily be a fake, who knows?

Whatever it is, one would point to THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, the big 20th Century Fox Christmas tentpole as being the prime location to debut.

AICN have a direct line to James Cameron, so keep on the lookout over their for official confirmation from the man himself on this one.

He says he is working on the effects for the movie right now but it's on course for it's late 2009 release.

AVATAR will blend of live-action photography and new virtual photorealistic production techniques invented by Cameron’s team, and promises to completely blow our minds. The film contains six fully CGI actors known as ’synthespians’. It’s needless to say that images from this movie are some of the most anticipated out of anything currently in production right now.

For the second time in just over a month, directing genius James Cameron has reiterated the fact that he wants to direct a smaller movie after he is done with his massive three year plus project Avatar.

Can't blame him - too many projects like Avatar can make you old very quickly!

From The Hollywood Reporter...
On the director's sonar is "The Dive," a true story about the romance between controversial Cuban free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and Frenchwoman Audrey Mestre. Under his guidance, Mestre became a free diver who broke several world records but died in 2002 while competing. (Free-diving competitors must hold their breath for long periods of time while deep under water.)
This guy is obsessed with water ain't he, do you think he feels like a frustrated fish?

Last month Cameron said similar sentiments to Variety letting people know that he intended to direct a small 3-D movie next and that drama's like
Atonement if done in this format can be just as thrilling and exciting as big budget summer tentpoles.

An interesting idea and I can see what he means but I need to see it in practice before I'm convinced.

Just like I said last month... as long as he keeps working!

You may have seen the following image on several film related news sites and blogs over the past 24 hours. I didn't run it originally because I thought it was fake, looking way too much like an out of print sci-fi novel than an multi million dollar special effects movie...

And it would seem my hunch was correct.

James Cameron says so himself on AICN, and he also gives us an update on the status of his next film - due out Christmas time 2009!
