Hello and welcome to the latest installment of the Burning Issue. Today we are taking a look at the business aspect of the movie environment with a countdown of the top 5 weekend box office hits for the US Charts as well as a summary of the biggest money makers within the United Kingdom.

This past weekend was centred around the raging success of Alice in Wonderland which spearheaded the highest grossing March weekend ever. There are some contrasting opinions about the quality of the film itself but no-one can deny that it is going to end up as quite the box office smash. Once again, just like Avatar a huge seventy percent of the gross was made up from the 3-d ticket sales and it in fact quite easily topped the James Cameron vehicle as the biggest 3d opening ever. Whether it will have Avatar's amazing staying power is another question entirely though.

So without further ado, let's begin with the US BOX OFFICE COUNTDOWN:

5.) AVATAR - THE STATS - WEEKEND GROSS: $8,118,102 TOTAL GROSS: $720,607,444 WEEKEND DROP PERCENTAGE: -40.5%

ANALYSIS: Avatar tumbled a fair amount over the weekend and its spare technical wins at the Oscars should do little to reinvigorate any momentum ...

Ok, so I'm all ready. This is my third time doing the live chat/blogging Oscar schtick and this year holds a lot of interest for me - mainly because I just don't see where the Best Picture gold is going.

I think everyone understands how Best Actor (Bridges), Best Actress (Bullock), Supporting Actor (Waltz), Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique) will pan out, that seems settled and everyone is fine with it. Well, except the Bullock award thing but there's no way Mulligan is walking out with the gold tonight, unfortunately.

But Best Picture is tricker to predict and I've been back and forth all week on where the statue is going. It is of course probably a two horse race between The Hurt Locker and Avatar, which is fascinating enough given the personal history between the two helmers, how different each movie is and how they play to their differing audiences, but also for what it means for the economics of film. The huge movie that has trounced all box office records, or the small movie that would be the lowest grossing Best Picture movie ever.

I guess you could say, the least seen Best Picture winner of all time.

Where do my personal feelings rest? ...

If Avatar takes home the Best Picture award tonight it will have gone some way to replicating the success of James Cameron’s previous narrative film Titanic. Both broke records at the Box Office and had phenomenal drop percentages during their weeks in the charts and both have used their mainstream appeal to capitalise on critical success. After all it can’t be too big a coincidence that if Avatar wins best picture 2010 it will be one of only eight films (including Titanic) that have managed to win without being nominated for their screenplay.

It is actually quite absurd when you think about it – a film winning best picture that can’t even get a screenplay nomination especially when the award features two separate hand-outs for original and adapted source material. When you consider that all the other best picture winners that fit into the unnominated screenplay categories were raging box office hits it highlights the importance of being a box office smash when it comes to being nominated or winning the top prize. Really the commercial success of a film and its critical standing shouldn’t correlate but the Academy Awards are not the Cannes Film Festival and money does matter.

Out of the Top Ten All Time Worldwide Box Office grosses (excluding current topper Avatar), only two have been recognised by the Academy Awards as the best motion picture of their respective release year.

Titanic in 1997 (2nd) and the last of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy - The Return of the King in 2004 (3rd) - two rare moments when the Academy voters and the mass general audience saw eye-to-eye.

It's telling that both Titanic and ROTK were 1 & 2 on the All Time List before 2010 - a sense that the Academy HAD no choice but too vote for those movies as it's rare to see a film take off and become so popular, and there was added pressure on the voters to acknowledge that fact.

The next Best Picture movie on the worldwide grossing list is all the way down at 38 with Forrest Gump in 1994, proof that the Academy doesn't award major box office success that often UNLESS it is a phenomenon, once in a blue moon picture. Like Avatar.

Last night at the BAFTA awards ceremony...

There is of course an undeniable truth about the 10 Academy Award nominations that is worth noting. Only five of the choices really matter.

The five movies attached to Best Director should go down in history as the "real" five Oscar nominations of 2010, and that goes for every year in the future they decide to continue this debacle.

Not this extra padding crap so the Academy can award a Pixar movie, or a populist audience pleaser to help viewing figures (though it still didn't work with the 10 chosen and honestly, Star Trek/The Hangover probably wouldn't have made a top 20!), or to give them more room so there's less chance of them forgetting a classic.

I mean of course, it doesn't hurt anyone that the extraordinary An Education or the rather brilliant A Serious Man has a Best Picture nomination, and that District 9 - a great artistic contribution to the best of 2010 has been recognised in this way. But The Blind Side devalues the thing, and each and every year there's gonna be one or two movies that make you shudder to think that the new ruling system has allowed them to join the party.

Avatar will become the second highest grossing worldwide movie of all time tonight when it passes The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's final $1,119,110,941 total.

After three or four months of release that would be an incredible achievement alone but to do that after just 20 days is beyond anything that could have ever been predicted. James Cameron - The Undisputed King of the World - is now competing against himself if he wants Avatar to become #1.

He's $750 million short of his last theatrical feature Titanic's worldwide gross but who would put a cap of $2 billion on the picture at this stage anyway? As I say, it's barely been out three weeks.

This is historic, ground-breaking, changes everything, once in a lifetime occurrence. This is history folks.

Avatar is the best thing since sliced bread. I know, I get it.

As expected the incredible word of mouth and a substantial repeat viewing audience has meant the James Cameron 3-D effects science fiction marvel has pulled in another $75 million over the holiday weekend, dropping an un-heard of 2.6% from last week.

This makes it the biggest second weekend total in history. Avatar is now sitting on $212 million domestic from 10 days, and who knows how high it could go in January when it's IMAX holding is likely to go unchallenged. It's inevitable that it will hit $1 billion worldwide (international takings are at $405 million) but it's way too early to put a cap on it's domestic possibilities.

I gotta tell ya, on a personal note - what I would give for Cameron to use a little bit of the mammoth fortune he has made on Avatar to buy the rights to the Terminator series when it's up for auction next month and make an ending to his two exceptional movies that can wipe out all the crap that we have been fed since. He doesn't necessarily have to direct anything, but just having him on board to block ...

There's only so many days I can use the snow as my excuse for not seeing Avatar, and I know I need to get my ass in gear soon before the advent of the New Year will make any kind of review obsolete. That's if it isn't already too late.

If nothing else, my Top Ten List of 2009 will be redundant without a mention of such a widely acclaimed movie with a $300 million budget from James Cameron, right?

I should see it for that reason alone, even if "the must see" factor couldn't persuade me to hand over my hard-earned money for another Harry Potter borefest, this year's Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich spectacles and the ludcricous looking Twilight: New Moon.

Realisation smacked me harder than that iron that hit Marv in Home Alone (odd reference I know, but I've been in a Christmas movie marathon mood this week) yesterday and I think I should probably share this with you guys.

During a festive, slightly merry conversation with one of my closest friends, who by the way is dying to see the movie, the truth behind my Avatar avoidence became clear. When he mentioned his surprise that the biggest film buff he ...

Nikki Finke has heard from a Fox studio exec that the heavy snow falling in North America right now is affecting the initial box office splurge of James Cameron's Avatar, which took a healthy $27 million on Friday (including the $3.5 million midnight takings) and should end up with something just short of $80 million by the end of the weekend.
Storm was in the Carolinas area today/tonight and I understand that the DC area was getting hammered. I would have to say we did get hurt in that area of the country, and I am worried about the effect in the Northeast tomorrow. Even so, this movie is getting such an incredibly positive reaction that I believe the word of mouth is just viral and those that may have been prevented from seeing the movie today or tomorrow will be there eventually without fail."
If it wasn't for the weather, Avatar would easily beat I Am Legend's $77 million opening December weekend record but as the snowstorms fall, many are keeping away and opting to see it at a later date. As much as Fox would rather have the money in the bank already, they shouldn't worry.

There are several things that need to be said about Avatar, and they all involve brushing aside the hype (or active dislike of hype) and objectively looking at what James Cameron has done with this incredibly expensive, and incredibly ambitious, sci-fi epic.

The first is that it is not that original. The story is an amalgamation of several plot lines we've seen time and time again. By sending the humans to a lush, but technologically regressive, location in order to exploit the natural resources we are treated to the standard anti-colonial narrative that praises the lifestyle of the 'noble savage'. There are moments recognizable from Dances With Wolves and, in a more sci-fi slant, Dune. There are even elements analogous to images and themes of Ferngully and Zulu.

The second is that the visuals aren't the most amazing things you've ever seen. The 3-D is great, don't get me wrong, but it is nothing we haven't seen achieved by Disney Pixar, or in films such as The Polar Express. The CGI landscapes are hugely impressive, but similarly ambitious landscapes have been produced much earlier, in films like Blade Runner and Dune again), and more recently in 2012. Likewise, innovative animated characters are ...

20th Century Fox have wisely lifted the Avatar review embargo after every critic in the U.K. and U.S. unanimously fell in love with James Cameron's film and felt compelled to forgo sleep to get the word out on what an amazing experience the visual masterpiece is.

Rarely do these nights ever happen in this business. Only once in a blue moon is there a case of 100% agreement on such a high profile movie being a game-changer and presenting an experience like nothing we've ever seen before. I can only recall The Dark Knight last summer and those first reactions to Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001 where critics, fanboys, and anyone lucky enough to have stumbled into the screenings, came out with a euphoria and an emotional connection to a film, that is written all over their choice of words.

The knives have been out for Cameron ever since Titanic became the highest grossing film of all time, and over the past 12 years, and none more so than in the last four months, Cameron has had to take a hell of a lot of stick from the critics community but when it came down to the ball ...

... are unbelievably positive, way more so than any of us could have ever expected after such a big black cloud hovered over the James Cameron epic ever since that infamous trailer kinda sucked the air of frenzied expectation out of the film.

I just wonder if the over-hyped worldwide spectacle of a premiere, which it has to be noted has been kind to many fanboy critics in terms of access and catering (hell, we were there for a start!), helped sway them and those other guys and gals in attendance to feel an extra bit of affinity towards a picture they previously took so much joy into scorning - or am I being overly cynical and this is the real deal and the second coming as some make it out to be?

Picture of the cast and crew of Avatar, in attendance for the long
awaited world premiere of probably, the most expensive movie of all time.
I expect some clearer heads to prevail once the hangover is over tomorrow, and some serious words are scribed about this film. All talk now is pretty worthless, though I would say that 20th Century Fox would be wise to scrap the embargo on this ...

Just as I was posting the piece on the Avatar world premiere tonight, I stumble across links to an embargo breaking review from the ridiculous critic "The Sneak" at the Sun and his masturbatory, childlike glee of reviewing films early, and the rather pompous, "look how easy I can break a contract and be smug about it" preview review from The Guardian.

Both rubbed me the wrong way. The Sun for it's stupidity and The Guardian for it's arrogance.
A stunning still from James Cameron's Avatar, opening
next week around the world but screening for critics around
the globe right now.

Are contract embargoes worth the paper they are printed on?

When will execs at 20th Century Fox, and other studios, do the right thing and ban highly read newspapers (though critically only a small % will care to read the film pieces) from seeing and reviewing such gigantically important movies before the embargo is lifted, and do the smaller websites/blogs such as OWF, who ALWAYS play by the rules and who never delve to such terrible lows a favour and send some exclusives our way for a change?

In around one hour's time, at 7.30pm, U.K. critics will be shown James Cameron's incredibly expensive (estimates say somewhere around $300 million) science fiction epic Avatar.

Obsessed With Film's Mike Edwards will be at the world premiere but he informed me at lunchtime today that all reviews for the movie are strictly embargoed until Monday morning.

Also there are Collider's Steve Frosty as are heyyouguys and it would appear /film's Brendon Connelly saw it last night?

Who will be the first to break the embargo and feel the wrath of Fox? I'm certain someone with itchy trigger fingers will somewhere. I can tell you right now it won't be us, but if someone does happen to post a review, then the paste is out of the tube so to speak, and we would be tempted to follow suit.

It just goes to show how much interest OWF have in Avatar as on the day it's chief film critic Mike Edwards is to see the film in London, we are more interested in talking about what's next for James Cameron - what his future holds, than how much we are looking forward to his latest film.

Which by the way, basically means we're not.

Production Weekly report that “James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an ‘event’ film set in the future.”

Slash Film have done their research and come up with a Hollywood Reporter announcement on Doomsday Protocol, a "Seven Samurai movie with aliens" script that was written by Salerno, and bought by 20th Century Fox in a seven-figure deal in September 2008. Back then they said...
“Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known to be an epic science fiction adventure in the vein of The Seven Samurai involving a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth.”
Salerno is the writer of Alien vs. Predator.

No word yet as to whether it's a project Cameron has his eyes on to direct ...

In a recent Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, I believe it was the Seinfeld-reunion finale show but I could be wrong, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld discuss the use of the phrase "having said that" in conversations and come to the conclusion that whenever someone uses that phrase, it's always the first thing they say which is the truth and what they want to get off their chest.

The second sentence is either just bullshit, or them hedging their bets on the validity of the first sentence. A case of having it both ways.

They use a stand-up comedian example.... guy comes on stage and says "you know, you people are a bunch of morons. Having said that, I'm very happy to be here".

So what do we make today of Avatar composer James Horner's "and not to mention names" sentence before forcefully sending an attack missile to Michael Bay during an interview with The LA Times' Geoff Boucher this week? Is the rule here the opposite?

Horner does want to mention names, he does want to take a stab at someone he dislikes, whilst putting up the pretence that he's not actually singling anyone out....

Boucher: "It's interesting, too, that small moments become so key ...

Late to the party as ever, I decided to tie this Top Ten in with the recent release of the first Avatar teaser and the hype and debate that has ignited off the back of it.

The revolutionary Avatar, whether instant classic or expensive mistake, will be warmly welcomed into public consciousness by yours truly as it will mark the return to the big screen after a twelve year absence of one of my favourite writers and directors of all time: Mr. James Cameron.

Cameron has long been a cinematic visionary and has helped shape modern cinema as we know it, yet he doesn’t always get the credit and/or recognition he deserves.

So with Avatar right around the corner, here are ten reasons why we should all be very excited about the return of James Cameron, as we count down the Top Ten Works of James Cameron.

#10
Rambo: First Blood Part II
(1985)
Writer

Granted, to make this into a Top Ten I’ve had to include some tenuous Cameron movie involvements, but I couldn’t very well include Piranha II: The Spawning could I? (As much as I would have liked to).

So, sort of a cheat including this here, as Stallone basically ate Cameron’s script for Rambo: First ...

I’d never been to an IMAX screening before. They’re massive screens aren’t they? Almost like an entire wall…a tsunami-like wave…where images threaten to pulverise the audience. And this seems to be James Cameron’s intentions for the 3-D release of his latest film Avatar. It is pure Cameron: loud, brash, macho, stupid and occasionally breathtaking. A publicity representative gave a little speech before the film and completely stone-faced said: “This could be the greatest film of all-time.”

The entire audience laughed. Quite audibly.

The fifteen minute clip introduces the character of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) on a spaceship with a startling, albeit, much more expensive-looking set design reminiscent of Aliens (1986).

There’s even cryogenic sun-bed-type thing. And Sigourney Weaver plays a doctor!

The rest of the preview footage is set on the alien planet, Pandora and introduces the Na’vi beings who look, quite frankly, like they belong in an Xbox 360 game…or something like that. There are also dinosaur-type beasts and flying dragons too. It is all remarkable looking and yet strangely distancing. Asking the audience to emotionally invest in a story of cartoon-looking giant blue aliens…it is a bit mad, and I’m sure Cameron is holding some wonderful stuff back for the big release. ...

OWF's Martyn Conterio is back with another quick report from a screening he attended yesterday. This time there's no embargo as an excuse for why there isn't a full write up. Just plain laziness, rather sleep than write-up about the movie, kind of attitude.

Should I fire him?
I saw it at the IMAX this evening...I actually felt sick after it...not just because of the awful dialogue...but if Cameron thinks a film that looks like an Xbox game is the future of cinema...then he's mental. The swooshing camera and blurry photography made me sick...something I haven't felt in a cinema since I saw Irreversible.
Anyway I've told him to get his ass together and write up a full report. But it's the weekend, so you might have to wait a while. Until then The Playlist have about as detailed a look at the footage as you're probably going to find.

After a tirade of technical issues which blighted what should have been the pain-free debut of Avatar, the last big movie spectacle of the decade and James Cameron's first feature film since Titanic, you can finally watch the trailer hitch free. But honestly, you are set for dissapointment. It's available at Apple or HERE and HERE. Just remember you can't ever go back from this moment. You will forever think of Avatar the way this trailer depicts it. Good luck!

You may have to forgive me for being a little harsh on Jim but for months on end he has been using phrases such as "game-changer", "cutting edge" and the "future of film-making" when referring to Avatar but really, it just ain't all that, is it? Based on this evidence it's not going to radically change anything when it opens on Dec. 18th.

Sure, Avatar looks (and remember that's mostly all we have to go on here because the trailer contains only one line of dialogue and no explanation of the plot/world we are witnessing) to me like I will get my money's worth and compared to the rest of what Hollywood is spending money on these days it looks like a ...
