News coming out of The Hollywood Reporter tonight is that Sir. Anthony Hopkins is in talks to play Thor's father Odin, the Norse God of Asgard in the Marvel comics superhero production set to be released in May 2011.

Director Kenneth Branagh has called on his fellow Shakespearean actor and good personal friend Hopkins for what is a pivotal role in the picture, as all the psycho-babble wisdom and big speeches will have to come from him. Hopkins is surely one of the greatest British actors of all time and the casting should pay of dividends for Marvel.
On another note, it seems they have traded up greatly after it looked certain back in June that the part was going to end up with Brian Blessed.

Odin is known for his great Wisdom, so the casting of a
guy like Hopkins is a smart, smart move.
The role of Odin will be a walk in the park for Hopkins, especially in this genre heavy phase of his career. He played a drunk, aging King in Beowulf, he plays the father of Lawrence Talbot in a chewing scenery kind of part in The Wolf Man and a few years ago appeared in Alexander. If the ...

It's fair to say old Wolf Man has had his troubles. I know it's an old thing to discuss but the loss of director Mark Romanek just days before shooting was such a terrible blow, it's a miracle this project even managed to enter the shooting stage, let alone anything else.

But that's all water under the early 20th century London bridge.

Then there was the several release date set-backs which adds up to nearly two years now since it was originally intended to debut on our screens. Can you believe the cast of this film were promoting the movie at Comic Con 2008, when back then it was positioned to be a showcase for man-made effects over computer CGI?

Oh how times have changed. A whole year of CGI post-production re-edits has resulted in an entirely different picture, one that isn't the modern day remake of a classic many of us hoped for. At this point I pretty much expected a disaster from the trailer, released for the first time today at Yahoo Movies.

The good news is, it's not a disaster. Far from it but it does have it's problems. The main one being what I mentioned above, which has now resulted ...

Woody Allen has landed Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins for this next movie according to Variety.

Well, I say "next movie", if your in the U.K. his "next" movie is VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA as it doesn't open till Friday. Which is a pretty cool movie by the way and is well worth your time, not least because Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz make the most amazing on screen European couple I've seen since 60's Godard.

So much raw sexual chemistry, so much emotional connectivity. Just great and Cruz was well deserving of her Oscar nomination in what I think is her most comfortable performance of her career.

And well technically speaking Allen's "next" movie is the one he has just completed titled WHATEVER WORKS, his love drama with Larry David and THE WRESTLER's Evan Rachel Wood, which I simply can't wait to see. Not least because David/Allen is one helluva an interesting pairing.

That one should be out in the U.S. late Summer from Sony Pictures Classics with once again a February/March 2010 release in the U.K.

But no his "next", "next" movie is untitled but will star Hopkins and Brolin.

It will mark his return to London where he shot MATCH POINT, SCOOP and CASSANDRA'S ...

Anthony Hopkins will later this year film his part of KING LEAR for a big budget British production from John Michael Stern (SWING VOTE) and co-starring Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and er, Russell Brand.

Going head-to-head with that production according to Variety will be Al Pacino who will play the mad king in a different production which comes from writer/director Michael Radford whose Shakespeare adaptation of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE five years ago was the material that gave Pacino his best performance this decade.

Two LEAR movies, probably due out in 2010. As always in this situation, it's usually the first one released which becomes the success because audiences don't like the idea for paying to see the same story twice.

But I always find them fascinating to see the differences each production has, what decisions were made, how the performances differ etc.

Producer Barry Navidi...
"Al has been offered this role many times over the years, but didn't feel ready," Navidi said. "He's ready now. The film will be true to its period, very similar to the classical look of 'Merchant of Venice.' Michael came up with the most brilliant adaptation and Al and I flipped for it."
For those who haven't seen it, MERCHANT OF ...

This absolutely sucks and is a really bad sign for Universal's remake of THE WOLF MAN. The negative buzz that comes with constant delays can be fatal, even if it's just trying to find a better slot for release.

Fangoria claim they have heard that the current April 3rd release date for Joe Johnston's movie is to be pushed back, possibly to as late as next fall!

So it could be a whole 12 months before we see the transformation of Benicio del Toro into THE WOLF MAN though the wise move would be Oct. 31st. From the looks of things, the move is more out of financial box office strategy than the film not being complete in time.

April is never a good time to release a movie, especially a horror one.

Though of course any Halloween date and it would have to go up against SAW VI but I'm sure Benicio with the help of Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving could take Jigsaw down!

It takes longer than you might think for the trailer of Joe Johnston's remake of The Wolfman to grab you but once it does, your intoxicated by gorgeous Victorian horror images culminating in the creepiest looking but very humanized werewolf since John Landis' An American Werewolf in London.

Benicio Del Toro looks as world weary as Lon Chaney Jr. ever did, Anthony Hopkins just like Claude Rains before him, absolutely belongs in this genre like no other actor working today.

I dare say if they remade Frankenstein and Dracula again, they would find a place for him.

Hugo Weaving I can't believe is making his first horror movie here.

Johnston is typically a very modest film-maker, it is a shame that the likes of Mangold, Landis, Cronenberg and of course the original helmer Mark Romanek passed or were overlooked for the project. But he has genuinely never made a movie I didn't like in some part (nor have I ever loved or hated) and that's how I feel about this trailer...

Though we really need to see this in HD - and fast, before we can make a fully informed opinion.
The Wolfman opens April 3rd 2009, hopefully with a new Blu-Ray transfer of the original ...

Adding to the already big star cast of the new King Lear film adaptation, The Guardian report that Naomi Watts will play the third sister alongside the previously announced Keira Knightley and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Anthony Hopkins plays the title role in the Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) version of the Shakespeare classic, a role he first performed in 1987!

Stern says...
"The one thing that I'm staying away from is stunt casting," said Stern, "so there won't be the American comedian, but there will be some really great actors playing smaller roles that will make a lot of sense."
He went on to say that we can expect to hear some further big casting very soon. The project is already the highest profile Shakespeare work since the 2004 under-rated movie The Merchant of Venice, one Al Pacino's best performances of recent years.

Personally, I'm still a little saddened that it won't be Ian McKellen starring in this adaptation but I don't need to remind anyone that Hopkins is still one of the finest actors around. Now let's hope Stern keeps the campness of movies like The Other Boleyn Girl and Elizabeth: The Golden Age on low and goes out and gives us a REAL tragedy ...

70 year old veteran Sir. Anthony Hopkins is to lead a new adaptation of Shakespeare's complex drama King Lear according to reporters out in Cannes.

It's a role he has already played extensively on stage and is a mainstay part for most British vets with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Laurence Oliver all dabbling into the character at the later stages of their careers.

Here's a still of Hopkins as Lear on stage...

Brit Kiera Knightley (as Cordeila, youngest daughter of Lear) and American Gwyneth Paltrow (Regan, Lear's treacherous middle daughter) have also been cast in what is setup as a big name $35 million adaptation.

The third and older sister has yet to be cast but I would expect a big name. It almost has to be to live up to the Knightley/Paltrow/Hopkins dichotomy.

Maybe Kate Winslet?

The studio, writing and directing talent behind the film are currently unknown - though the word is the movie will feature epic action sequences!

As with every Shakespeare work of fiction, the tale has been adapted many, many times on screen - more than a dozen in fact with the Laurence Oliver 1983 adaptation probably the most well known. Also, this Christmas the critically acclaimed Ian McKellen production which ...

Review by Michael Kaminski

The life of Alexander the Great is such an ambitious and complicated subject matter that it would seem nearly impossible to translate it into a motion picture; the many sides to his personality, the vast cast of characters in his life, the complex political context he existed in, the immense scale of his life, and the uncountable deeds he did, tangled in a web of ambiguities, contradicting history, controversy and necessary interpretation. But if there is one person adept at tackling ambitious subject matter, it is Oliver Stone. Particularly suited to Alexander, he was in fact intimately familiar with the subject matter, having held a life-long personal interest in Alexander the Great. He sought to bring to the screen a portrait of the man that examined his personal life, without censorship, but that was also meticulously detailed and historically accurate, and on a scale that had been seldom seen in even the ...

It's not only tiring being a cursed werewolf by night but it's also kinda bloody.

First image from the U.K. based location of The Wolf Man, a remake of the classic Universal horror picture which is now being directed by Jurassic Park III and Jumanji's Joe Johnston after Mark Romanek bailed on the project at the last minute.

The great cast of the movie also includes Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving and is due out in around 14 months time.

Nice to know this project is back on track after the change of director halted the shooting date. Let's hope we get some clearer photo's soon.
