No matter how you shake it, the 2010 Tim Burton just isn't the same guy he was five, gosh - actually ten years ago. Has it really been that long since he made Sleepy Hollow, the last movie where you felt like he was really trying?

Latter day sinful film-making plagues all great directors of course, with the rare exception of a few (Scorsese, Cronenberg come to mind). But seldom has Burton been this generic, his trademark so absent, the result so "meh".

I miss the passionate Tim Burton who brimmed with originality, his films that bursted to the seams with lived-in worlds of epic grandeur that you could believe in. I miss the inventive Gothic expressionistic wonder of most of his first eight pictures. Sadly, that Burton, the outsider who had a heart and limitless imagination, is long gone and I guess we have to come to terms with it.

One of the great auteurs from 90's cinema is barely visible here in his new Alice In Wonderland adaptation that feels like it was made by a watered down, paint-by-numbers, Disneyfied filtered Burton. There's a few moments of visual pizazz and the magical spark among a few creatures (notably the visuals and ...

If pushed, I would struggle to offer a really great American ensemble movie in the grand tradition where convergent narratives compliment each other to create a wider impressive plot. Magnolia and Crash will no doubt be suggested- the former I might be inclined to agree with (though wholly "great" it is not), but the latter I found so drab and imposing that I lost interest in it far from the ending.
In place of the narrative strands' importance, and the way in which they converge, ensembles tend instead to glorify the ensemble themselves, assuming that the audience will take most pleasure from seeing a large number of famous faces acting alongside one another.
Take, for example The Ocean's Trilogy which was such a bloated excercise that somewhere during the second movie they gave up on the idea of being a real ensemble project, and relegated certain characters to bit-parts and scenery. Instead of using the larger than usual cast to flesh out the complexity of the narrative, which was admittedly better achieved in the first part, the film just revelled in the fact that the gang was all still there. And what validates the argument more than anything? The sequential increase in ...

Spider-Man 4 has some huge hurdles to jump before it's anywhere near close to filming, that's the situation we are in right now. Thankfully, Sam Raimi has learnt his lesson and won't film a page of any script he isn't completely satisfied with. That at least we can guarantee.

A breaking news article from Nikki Finke tonight claims that Raimi "hated" all previous drafts for Spider-Man 4 turned in by Gary Ross, David-Lindsay Abaire and James Vanderbilt - and in an attempt to appease their director and get the movie filming as quickly as possible, producer Laura Ziskin has quickly turned to her husband Alvin Sargant, co-screenwriter of Spidey's 2 and 3 - to put together a Sony/Raimi friendly script.

Of course as we know, what further complicates matters is Raimi adamant's desire to stick on The Vulture as the main villain with John Malkovich playing him and Sony themselves hate that idea - so one doesn't see how a compromise script can be possible that pleases both parties.

And as Sony will make another Spider-Man movie no matter what, it's almost inevitable that Raimi has to bail.

I wrote on 18.12.09 that Sony had forced Spider-Man 4 to go on "holiday hiatus", effectively ...

Sam Raimi now has full creative control over Spider-Man 4, so most, if not all major decisions are his. That wasn't the case with the last movie where Raimi lost an awful lot of pre-shooting battles but it's certainly the case here, just so you know who is responsible.

Movieline carry the exclusive Spidey 4 scoop from that esteemed Oscar nominated actor John Malkovich is now favourite to play Adrian Toomes, a former electronics engineer who employs a special harness of his own design that allows him to fly and endows him with enhanced strength.

He becomes a remorseless killer, dubbed The Vulture and will be the main villain of Spider-Man 4. The news is officially unconfirmed but we do know that Raimi likes Vulture, and Raimi likes Malkovich (the actor was down to the final few on the Green Goblin casting for the first movie), so it sounds legit to me.

Sir. Ben Kingsley was offered the same part in Spider-Man 3, before
Marvel yanked the character away from Raimi during the pre-production
stages.
The Vulture? Colour me disappointed. The Vulture isn't anyway close to being the most exciting villain of the Spider-Man franchise and unless he was used in the first ...

Anne Hathaway is a tremendous actress.

Oscar nominated last year for her brave and transparent performance in Rachel Getting Married, and the huge exposure her brief Oscar stint with Hugh Jackman helped her win two massive musical projects that are being written for her right now (Judy Garland biopic & a one with Jackman), leave her on the verge of mega A-list stardom, if she isn't already there.

But I tell you folks... she's a bad fit for Spider-Man 4. She doesn't need this gig at this stage of her career and Sony are barking up the wrong tree by allegedly approaching her a part in the movie, according to Nikki Finke.
Sometimes an incredible, top-notch actress can simply be
wrong for a part.

She's an amazing presence on screen. But hey, sometimes an actor just doesn't work in some environments. And that's the case here with the role of Black Cat and Spider-Man 4.

Hathaway won't be able to do the mainstream comic book shtick. She barely got through the parody blockbuster Get Smart with her career in tact and yeah she could pull it off physically, but it's different when you have to play that role for serious. Can you imagine if Audrey Hepburn ...

Astonishing promotional photo's and artwork have been released by Walt Disney Pictures at USA Today, showing off the first official glimpse at three major fantasy characters in Tim Burton's motion captured 3-D animated adaptation of the much loved Lewis Carroll fable Alice in Wonderland.

What kind of deranged artist makes your best friend and your wife look like this? Tim Burton, that's who...
JOHNNY DEPP AS THE MAD HATTER!!!

HELENA BONHAM CARTER AS THE RED QUEEN

And then finally....
ANNE HATHAWAY AS THE WHITE QUEEN

What I didn't realise before I had read the article at USA Today is that Burton's movie is kind of a sequel to Carroll's fable, in that a now 17 year old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) makes a run for it after she finds out she is about to be proposed to in front of a large high society group of snobs.

She once again falls down the rabbit hole and arrives back in Wonderland, a place she last visited ten years ago. She doesn't remember her visit to Wonderland but The White Rabbit remembers her, and the creatures of Wonderland are hoping she will help them in their revolt.

That sounds more interesting than a simple re-imagining, and will hopefully lead to new character ...

Good casting in a biopic is when the announcement comes in and you can't imagine anyone else playing the role. You can envisage the make-up and change of physical appearance, you can imagine them smiling the same way as the person (for some reason I also think caputring their smile and the feeling you get from their eyes, is the majority of the battle) and you instantly have the poster image, that dramatic and "money shot" dialogue scene and the Oscar speech all worked out in your head.

Last night came the news that Anne Hathaway, recently Oscar nominated for playing a messed up and neurotic young lady with the weight of the world on her shoulders in Rachel Getting Married is now attached to the Weinsteins biopic of Judy Garland.

Deal, if she signs (attached = "yeah if it all comes into place satisfactory, I will sign the contract and star in the movie") will include a film and stage adaptation, and according to the Weinsteins will be a “musical or a play with music.”

Hathaway, a qualified singer (if such a certification is ever given out), showed off her vocal skills with Hugh Jackman at this year's opening Oscar number (performance starts at around ...

Jon Favreau has confirmed to E! (via The Playlist) that 20th Century Fox have used their pre-agreed option from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA to nab actress Emily Blunt for one of the their tentpoles, casting her in GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, the upcoming adventure comedy starring Jack Black.

So it's confirmed she is out as Black Widow, which really sucks because she was the perfect actress for the role but of course she can't be in two places at once.

Filming on IRON MAN 2 will begin in just over two months so Favreau is likely to already be deep into the process of finding her replacement....

Now that Emily Blunt is out, who should play Emily Blunt in IRON MAN 2?
( polls)

Scarlett Johansson was rumored a few weeks ago to replace Blunt. Her recent hair dye has also fuelled this speculation, though I can't help but feel she is no good for a superhero role. And imaging her doing a Russian accent is a dreadful worry.

DOLLHOUSE actress Eliza Dushku has lobbyed for the part on Howard Stern and would be a really solid choice...
"They’re doing Iron Man 2, and I’m so perfect for the Black Widow character, that they just need to get into ...

Bit of a dodgy headline but hey, it's a Saturday night. You don't normally get updates from me at this time of the week, so be fucking grateful!

And hey it's a pretty cool story. According to China.org.cn, the beauty queen Anne Hathaway has been hired to co-star with Jack Black in a superhero comedy to be written, directed and led by Stephen Chow.

Wei Dasen, a rep for Chow's company called it...
"a superhero, action-packed, special effects-rich, and of course funny" movie".
... and has in the past been described by Chow as being similar in the vein to KUNG FU HUSTLE.

No title or firm plot has yet to be revealed but the movie could well be Chow's answer to his problems at 20th Century Fox over THE GREEN HORNET.

A movie he was set to direct (and indeed is still attached to star) but left because of a conflict of creative decisions between Chow and the studio.

Chow working in his homeland now has full control to give us the outrageous superhero comedy he probably dreamed of when he first met Seth Rogen and spoke of the HORNET.

And let's hope he will deliver the movie we originally dreamed of when we first heard of ...

Soho Hotel a couple of turns from Oxford Street and OWF and a few other possibly respected journos are sat in a plush conference room of animal print comfy armchairs waiting for Jonathan Demme (director), Anne Hathaway (lead actress) and Robyn Hitchcock (musician) to tell us the inside skinny on RACHEL GETTING MARRIED.

You may remember I reviewed the movie HERE.

A couple of minutes before they come in we’re allowed to put our voice recorders on the guests’ ‘coffee tables’ and after weighing up all the seating possibilities and acoustic ramifications place mine smack in the middle. Sitting back down my animal print chair decides to exhale very loudly much to the amusement of all and sundry…

The 30 minute event is hosted by another journalist who’s name I’m afraid escapes my attention. This may or may not have anything to do with the fact that as he says it Anne Hathaway walks in the room.

Q: It says in the notes, which are always true, that this was hoped to be the most beautiful home movie ever, tell me about the decision to go for that particular style.

IMDB tells me that Rodrigo Garcia, director of the hammy Nine Lives helmed this psychological/thriller Passengers about the mysterious happenings to the survivors of a terrible plane crash ordeal but all the signs on this one point to one M. Night Shyamalan.

It looks soooooo much like one of his movies and that is really not a good thing these days.

Really low grade acting (like, really bottom of the barrel stuff), some awful reaction shots, terrible direction, a really cheap STV narrative voice-over. It looks worse than any of the trailers for The Happening, Lady in the Water and The Village put together and they have managed to make Patrick Wilson and Anne Hathaway look like amateurs.

And haven't we seen David Morse, Clea Duvall and Andre Braugher (so this is why that guy went after he trekked into The Mist) do this thing time and time again?

Play this movie alongside that Nicolas Cage craptacular looking Knowing (which also features a plane crash disaster) and you have possibly the worst looking double bill of the century.

And then if by some miracle, you weren't completely turned off by that ridiculous trailer, how's this poster take your fancy?
Great use of the Photoshop lightness feature ...

A revamped 60s comedy series starring big screen mainstay Steve Carell, Dwayne "don't call me The Rock or I'll smash your face" Johnson and casting wild card Anne Hathaway. Expecting it to be a bit lame? I was.

Especially considering some of the negative buzz that surrounded it in early debates and the long-lead reviews. But I'm pleased to report that it's actually not that bad. It might be that I'm still reeling from some of the crap that's been hurled my way this summer. We've had the pitiful Baby Mama waving big names from past and present in our faces in the hope of a smile, Mike Myers talking a heck of a lot about poop and penises in The Love Guru and Eddie Murphy digging the final few spadefuls of dirt from his already incredibly deep cinematic grave in Meet Dave; so whilst I hope to convince you that this movie is amusing, do bear in mind the comedy wasteland I've faced this summer.

Some reviewers would have you believe that this movie merely hangs on to its audience through the irreverant charm of the ever popular Carrel. It's true that he manages to keep up his buffoonish lovable demeanour ...

A strange and decisively off beat Indie drama, the upcoming Rachel Getting Married stars a shorter haired Anne Hathaway as a struggling young woman who has been in and out of rehab for the last ten years and is an emotional wreck as she returns home for her sister's wedding.

Without many surprises, the trailer hints at a up and down emotional roller coaster with lots of life affirming speeches and gestures.

The narrative may be predictable but the man behind the helm might surprise you. It's Jonathan Demme, the director of Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate of which this movie I would suggest is not going to be his best work.

SEE IT IN HD HERE
Though we like Anne Hathaway right - even if it's a SHOW ME THE OSCAR role.
Rachel Getting Married has no current release date attached but will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Sony Pictures Classics holds US rights and Mongrel Media will distribute in Canada.

You might laugh at me here but the only movie that in 36 hours (i.e. after I've seen Indy IV) that ventures anywhere near my anticipation for The Dark Knight will be the Steve Carell/the smokin' Anne Hathaway/The Rock comedy Get Smart.

It's so up my alley. Steve Carell in the last four years has propelled himself into being one of the most likeable comedic actors we have today and in a weird way, he seems to have been born to play a dumb secret agent!

No actor in a movie this Summer, with the possible exception of Bale as Batman feels more perfect that Steve Carell in this movie.

5 hilarious t.v. spots CAN BE SEEN RIGHT HERE. See The Rock walk into a wall multiple times!

Co-starring is Terrence Stamp, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews and I'm so glad they have kept the footage quiet and it hasn't leaked but Bill Murray for a cameo. I'm so thankful they didn't hore that out in the trailers!

Look for this on June 20th (U.S.) and sadly July 10th (U.K.)

This movie looks terrific.

I think I was one of the only people on the planet to be excited for Get Smart after seeing the first trailer but the whole world wide web has turned around now haven't they?

Everyone loves it and so they should!

Now Get Smart and download the second trailer in quality Quicktime from HERE.

See Terence Stamp outsmarted by Steve Carrell, The Cone of Silence, The Rock walking into a door, Alan Arkin kicking ass, Steve Carrell & Anne Hathaway running! Anne Hathaway in panties (pause at 1.35) and MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH!

From the director of Anger Management and The Longest Yard - this comedy adaptation of the original 60's Mel Brooks show opens on June 20th (U.S) and 15th August (U.K.).

Thoughts on the trailer? Does it just look like a new version of Austin Powers and if so, is that a good thing? When will you see this... opening night, a week maybe into it's theatrical run or on DVD?

We've already seen a ton of Bond parodies. I mean Hell, it only took four years after the release of the first Bond movie DR. NO back in 1962 for the blatant Bond parody OUR MAN FLINT to be spawned and surprisingly it became a huge success for it's leading man James Coburn.

Then, just one year later there was the original CASINO ROYALE with the bizarre but extremely watchable cast that included David Niven, Peter Sellers, Orson Welles, Woody Allen, Deborah Kerr and Bond's original desirable hottie Ursula Andress.

Famously in the 90's there was AUSTIN POWERS which would ignite two sequels and cement Mike Myers as a huge star, with the dual roles of both The International Man of Mystery and as the villain Dr. Evil.

Then came JOHNNY ENGLISH, the hideous 21st century British attempt at parodying Bond (which by DIE ANOTHER DAY had almost become a parody of itself) with Rowan Atkinson as the title character and Natalie Imbruglia as his sidekick.

So comes GET SMART, which isn't entirely covering new ground.

It's not officially a Bond parody as it's based on a very light-hearted and funny 60's t.v. show... but it's pretty obvious from the trailer that there are Bond ...
