Using his hard-earned comic credentials to direct a passion project, Judd Apatow's third written and directed effort Funny People, starring his old best friend and roommate Adam Sandler, is in many respects, exactly the story his filmography demanded from him at this point in time. It's a grown up effort. The third entry in a trilogy of "man-childs" movies after The 40 Year Old Virgin (first time having sex), Knocked Up (pregnancy) and now the life cycle is complete with a look into one's mortality, and a reflection of your journey up too that point and what you do if you had a section chance at life.

Hold on, is that a comedy I've just described. Well yes, Funny People is funny... at times. But dramatic too, even more so than the previous two in his canon.

It's also overtly too long, its running time would rival Magnolia - without the depth of content. Indeed some scenes go nowhere in particular, only present because Apatow’s love for his precious material is so apparent. However, it does not mean the audience will be so enamoured. The use of cameo appearances all feels rather needless (with the exception of Andy Dick, who comes out with the ...

This Monday after many e-mails and negotiating, I managed to convince Universal to allow OWF access to a filmed interview slot with some of the cast and crew for Funny People (hopefully Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow - depending on how it works out) in London, along with an early screening and press conference attendance for the opening next week in the U.K. comedy ... but sadly I've hit a snagg.

The four permanent and trust worthy contributors that write for me from the capital are all busy with other work on Monday. Major headache!

This situation hasn't really happened before for an event like this which is so useful to the site, I would hate to miss this opportunity. I'm really a bit lost on what to do. I've put a few advertising job notices on various sites around the interwebs but with Monday less than a full day away now, it's unlikely something is going to come from it.

I would love to handle it myself but I got stuff for 500 Days of Summer planned to do on Monday, plus a trip down to London just a day before I'm off to Edinburgh to see the new Ricky Gervais "Science" ...

I'm not going to deal with my feelings on Adam Sandler's spotty movie career, since I just did that in this article for The Rec Show. If you'd like, you can check out my thoughts there.

I can respect comedies that tackle larger and deeper issues. A film like Tootsie dealt with complicated gender roles and adult romantic situations. Mr. Mom, although a pure comedy, had serious emotional character development. In these films and others, the comedy is always tinged - but not overwhelmed - by the drama.

This has been one of my major running complaints with the work of Judd Apatow. Although he has crafted some of the most memorable comedic moments of the last decade in films like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad, his films also tend to run too long. He also tends to generously ladle on the pathos and emotion, which I find dilutes the comedy too much.

It's even worse in Funny People, Apatow's newest dramedy. This time, Apatow reworks a tired movie-of-the-week plot into an aimless vehicle for today's brightest comedians.

Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, a veteran stand-up comedian with an impressive array of movie hits to his name. When Simmons, discovers that he has a terminal ...

Judd Apatow; you are the master of making me laugh uncontrollably and at the same time really feel that big sting, that big lump at the back of my throat.

And it really looks like FUNNY PEOPLE could be your best yet. There's a depth to it that far outreaches THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP, both of which had lots more on their minds than the usual rom-com.

Universal have released a very long trailer for the film that stars Adam Sandler as a comedian who finds out he is dying and becomes close to the young comedian he has recently taken under his wing (Seth Rogen).

The usual Apatow cast supports, with an Aussie accented Eric Bana joining in this time.

Apatow really seems to have notched up the Hollywood sheen of the movie. Looks damn beautiful. It really works and you know how I know it works?

Because I'm excited for it and it stars Adam Sandler. So there ya go!

Thanks once again to First Showing for the heads-up and the awesome trailer link!

Will I be this teary eyed come July 31st, still unsure as to whether I am laughing or crying?

Now that we know THE GREEN HORNET is definitely still on at Sony, we can get down to talking about casting.

The LA Times have a brief snippet claiming that Adam Sandler will be taking on “a brief but key role in the movie as a certain surprise superhero”.

Sandler and Seth Rogen co-star in Judd Apatow's next movie FUNNY PEOPLE, due out July 31st 2009 and probably cooked up the idea on the set of that movie.

Am I right in remembering that GREEN HORNET'S Britt Reid is related to THE LONE RANGER?

Automatically you think he will cameo as the RANGER but then you remember Disney own the rights to that series and are pushing forward with a big movie adaptation, probably with George Clooney and Johnny Depp and wouldn't like the piss taken out of the character over at another studio. But if it's not THE LONE RANGER, who can it be?

A much slimmer Seth Rogen, losing the weight fast for his role as the action/hero THE GREEN HORNET, features in the poster for the third directed movie from Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP), the semi-autobiographical FUNNY PEOPLE.

The Universal Pictures comedy/drama which is only a few weeks into filming finds Adam Sandler as a seasoned stand-up comedian who is diagnosed as being terminally ill. His desire to form a true friendship, see's him take a very green performer (Rogen) under his wing.

It promises to be sweet, sad, uplifting and funny with a true moral message. Just like every Apatow film then!

Co-starring are the usual Apatow crew, his real life wife Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill, along with two newcomers to the universe, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman.

One wonders why they are getting the promotion out this early for the film, I didn't expect to see anything until at least February. Especially during filming! Wonder how much dropping the weight changes Rogen's attitude and whether it effects his humor!

Clearly I don't pay enough attention to the career of Adam Sandler, because I didn't realize until just recently that Sandler's next movie in production is a collaboration with producer/director/writer Judd Apatow. Maybe this doesn't seem like such a big deal; after all, the pair have already worked together on YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN earlier this year, which Sandler starred in and cowrote with Apatow.

But still, I think the pair's new project - FUNNY PEOPLE, slated for release in 2009 - suggests a fairly big shift in terms of Sandler's career, and could lead to what I'll call a Seth Rogen-type effect for the actor.

To be honest, I'm not a big Sandler fan. His earlier movies HAPPY GILMORE and BILLY MADISON are fine enough, easy diversions. I think of them as excellent movies to run in the background while I'm loading the dishwasher - and if you couldn't tell, that's not really a compliment. I apply that same low standard to ARMAGEDDON. But Sandler has a talent for creating at least one truly memorable comic setpiece per movie, as well as the ability to make some decent money at the box office. His schtick - although it's one ...

Babyfaced 26 year old Samm Levine, one of the stars of Not Another Teen Movie and a frequent actor on the show Freaks & Geeks has joined Inglorious Bastards.

It's without a doubt the actor's biggest role to date. AICN speculate he will have "the baby faced" part frequently seen in these kind of war pictures, which actually makes the casting seem like it has a basis in some sense.

In related news, the site also report that David Krumholtz who was announced to be in talks last week for the film, will not after all star in the flick.

And Adam Sandler, linked for YEARS to this project said this week he had to turn down Quentin's offer for the film because of a scheduling conflict on Judd Apatow's next movie.

A few pivotal roles yet to be cast, including the part of the Nazi soldier that Leonardo DiCaprio was very nearly offered until Tarantino decided he wanted an actual German to play the part.

This week in 2004 the International Court of Justice passed a ruling declaring the West Bank security barrier illegal under international law – four years on and there are no signs that Israel will recognise the court’s decision, and continues to build unabated. In the same week as the anniversary, Israeli PM Ehud Almert has stepped down as leader of Israel’s Kadima party amid a corruption scandal, and on the other side of the barrier fresh fighting has broken out between Fatah and Hamas. With no end in sight to the fighting, and much needed education on both sides, as well as here in the west, which bastion of academic rigour will endeavour to provide insight, edification, and perhaps even a little humanity to this desperate political situation? Adam “Uplifting Retard” Sandler will, that’s who.

Sandler plays Zohan Dvir – one of Mossad’s top agents, who has had enough of being everyone’s hero and just wants to pack his Uzis and become a hairdresser. Seeing no other way out, Zohan fakes his own death, and moves to America to become the next Nicky Clarke.

Or at least we know that he wrote a character that was a big fan of Munich, which in turn most likely means he enjoyed it too. Or maybe he just used it for comedic value and has never even seen the movie?

Ah well. We know that he is aware of Munich at the very least...

The word from CHUD is that Bana is in talks with Apatow for his next movie, which we found out a few days ago would revolve around a stand-up comedian and would be part semi biographical from the comedy genius. Now here's something I didn't know which adds just that extra veritas to the possible rumor and casting. Bana started life in Australia as a stand up comedian! PERFECT!If talks are true, Bana has been offered a big role... playing husband to Leslie Mann.
Talking to MTV, Judd Apatow has revealed that his mysterious third directing movie after the brilliant 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up will be about stand-up comics, something that is close to his heart having spent years on the circuit trying to make a name for himself in the 90's.

Adam Sandler (with whom he travelled and roomed together before either were famous and will lead this movie), regular Apatow man Seth Rogen and Apatow's real life wife Leslie Mann make-up the cast so far...
"It's a comedy, but it has more drama in it. A hilarious drama is what I'm going for," Apatow said. "Every movie, I'm trying to find a way to go deeper, to tell stories about subjects that are important and make them less and less broad while making them equally as funny. [This film is] another step in that progression".
The movie is still untitled but does have a tentative release date of July 31th 2009, currently opening opposite the Tony Scott remake of The Taking of Pelham 123.

In the past I've tagged the movies of Judd Apatow as being "the future of the romantic comedy" to some sneers and uncomfortable anger in our readers but I ...

Judd Apatow's casts are becoming as predictable as Kevin Smith's but they always seem to work well and are funny together, so I'm all for it.

Apatow's third directing effort after The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up will begin shooting late summer (or early fall) and will star Seth Rogen and the director's real life wife Leslie Mann, both of which appeared in the above mentioned movies. Adam Sandler who worked on the script of his upcoming comedy You Don't Mess With the Zohan with Apatow, is also on board.

The film is a co-production of Universal and Sony Pictures but is currently untitled and the plot a mystery.

I'll really enjoyed the two directing Apatow efforts so far and it's pretty obvious that he keeps the best things he writes for himself as opposed to the movies he writers or co-writes and gets someone else to helm. Knocked Up was funny and sweet. The 40 Year Old Virgin was the same. A hat trick would be nice.
