Casting Couch #5 – Barbarella

Posted by Matt Holmes on August 18, 2007 – 10:09 am | 5 comments

So Sin City is on the cooler for now but what that does mean is we get Robert Rodriguez remaking the very cult classic camp movie Barberella. The movie promises more sexual indulgence from a director who has a keen eye for hot and sexy females. He knows how to shoot them alright…

Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn. Jessica Alba in Sin City. Rose McGowan in Grindhouse. Who’s next?

Here, we take a look at the names who have been mentioned the most with the role and some of Matt’s personal picks. We then come to a conclusion on who would be best or indeed least suited for it.

So what’s needed then for the role? Obviously a very hot and sexy female who has charisma and won’t look too ridiculous in a camp movie. Remember Jane Fonda owned this role in the 60’s, so she won’t be easy to replicate…

Halle Berry

Halle Berry, 41

Resume for film: Die Another Day

Surprisingly, Halle Berry is the name linked the most with the movie despite being 9 years older than Jane Fonda when she did the part. Being a former Bond girl, you would think she would the feisty quality on her CV but I’m not so sure. She doesn’t quite do it for me. The idea of her putting on a Barbarella costume just reminds me of her in Catwoman leather antics, which was a complete disaster. I wouldn’t cast her here and I don’t think Rodriguez will.

Brittany Murphy

Brittany Murphy, 29

Resume for film: Sin City

Although I haven’t heard her name mentioned, Brittany Murphy seems the perfect candidate for the role of Barberella. She is just a litle younger than Jane Fonda when she did the role and has the figure, the long blonde hair, the pretty face and I believe the tongue-in-cheek chops for the part. Working with Rodriguez in Sin City has to be her name is in the frame and I know I would pay money to see her lead this film.

Heather Graham

Heather Graham, 37

Resume for film: Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

Let’s face it, her role as Felicity Shagwell in Austin Powers 2 was basically Barberella in a Bond spoof. Although she has zero acting ability, if Rodriguez wants to go the for a nostalgic ‘Grindhouse’ type cinema with obviously bad acting then this role could be for her. Looks-wise six years or seven years ago, no-one looked more perfect for the role than her but she is getting on a bit now. I wouldn’t cast her but her role as Shagwell was so similar, it’s hard not to think of her.

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson, 22

Resume for film: Match Point

It’s impossible to bring up a role like Barbarella without bringing up the name Scarlett Johansson. I believe she’s the sexiest women on the planet and certainly has a generous figure to fill whatever sexy outfit they make her wear. She has a filmography full of hot roles (Match Point anyone?) and at the age of 22, can even carry on the role for a franchise if required. She can act… but she can make fun of herself at the same time (Scoop). Although I think Brittany Murphy is perfect for the role because of her persona as an actress, I would love to see Scarlett as Barbarella too. Just tell me that isn’t her when you look at that image above.

Rose McGowan

Rose McGowan, 33

Resume for film: Grindhouse

So she has dark hair at the moment? Big deal, she can dye it blonde. Rodriguez sure seemed to have fun filming McGowan in Grindhouse, maybe a second team-up could be on the cards. McGowan was the poster girl for Grindhouse, showing her ability to be sexy and again, her acting isn’t perfect but it kinda suits the character. She wouldn’t be my first choice but that’s not to say she wouldn’t be able to carry the part.

So folks take a look at the contenders there and leave a comment in the post about which actress YOU think should play Barbarella. You do not just have to be restricted to that choice, you can add your own to the mix also.

My Pick - Brittany Murphy

I’m making the rounds today, making my opinion known on the issue of Rose McGowan playing BARBARELLA!! I say “HELL YES!!” After hearing that Drew Barrymore was to be cast in the role, then Lindsay Lohan… I’m overjoyed to hear that Rosie got the role. Forget about Halle Berry playing it, she isn’t right for the part at all! Jessica Alba is always mentioned, and even Britney Spears was rumoured to play it at one point (thank God that never materialized), and other studio powers are said to still be pushing for Nicole Kidman… but I say thee nay!! Rose McGowan has my full support as a lifetime Barbarella fan. I honestly believe that Jean Claude Forest would approve of Rosie! I also want to rally the powers that be to turn Barbarella into a franchise, so I can submit my Barbarella vs. Vampirella script to Rodriquez!!!!

Oh, yeah… and looking at the pics you have up here in support of your ideas, I would say Scarlett Jo would make a great Black Queen. I’m hoping the word I heard that Shania Twain was cast in the role is only a rumour!!

Click on my name and see the most dead on lookalike, in the current Hollywood lineup, that is. Then compare that with the real Barbarella.
